Screen Sharing, one user?

I have upgraded a couple of my machines to Lion, and have noticed the switch to allow multi-user/virtual screen sharing.
Is there any way to mimic the old behaviour?
What I use screen sharing for is when my wife or kids need help, or to check in on what the kids are doing.  I would like to be able to log on and control the desktop, without knowing which user is connected.
Thanks

Correct. So if you are using a Lion(you) to connect to a Snow leopard(kids) then you'll run into this problem
but if its you who runs Snow leopard and kids are running on lion then this whole thread was pointless LOL.

Good question. Are there a lot of accounts?I am unsure what the best setup for you might be. I reckon a 3rd party VNC might just do the trick

  • Screen sharing a user account

Is there a way to use screen sharing to display a particular user account on the host computer? I use a Mac Mini as an HTPC with Plex running all the time on an account aptly named "Plex", but I'd like to be able to use screen sharing on my Macbook Pro to view and manage another account on the Mac Mini while Plex is still running and displayed on my TV. Basically, I want to be able to manage the computer without disrupting the entertainment! Any way to do it?

    Not really.
There is a hack using the "Vine Server" VNC server.
    <http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/16699>
You enable Mac OS X "Fast User Switching" in System Preferences -> Accounts.
You login to the account you want to Screen Share, and start Vine Server, using a port such as 5901.
You now use Fast User Switching so you can bring up your Plex account. Do what you want/need so it is operating normally.
Now from your MacBook Pro, you connect to the Vine Server. Finder -> Go -> Connect to server -> vnc://mac.mini.address:5901
You should now be talking to the alternate account.
Your mileage may vary on how well this works.

  • Update form Marketing Document screens from one user to other

I know there is a query somewhere where I can set up all Marketing Document screens for a user then copy it to other users so their Marketing documents have the same look and I don't have to go through each user.
Does anybody has that query? Thanks

    Hi Rosi
A query would imply some sort of direct write to SAP tables and that is not wise. You could rather have a look at the DI API or DTW templates for updating user defaults. If I recall correctly it is called UserMenuService.

  • Role content is displayed as blank screen for one user

    Hello,
Portal version is 6.0 SP 18.
A page (content 2 iviews; one iView is UWL) was added to a role and assigned to users. Although everybody can see the page via role on the portal, one user gets blank window. Page is not displayed for her and no error message is shown. But if the same user previews the portal page under the portal content, teh same page is displayed properly.
Where can this blocking be for this user? I clean cache of UWL and all personalizations; role removed from user and added again. Also I removed the page from role and add again as Deltalink. Result is the same.
I am waiting your reactions, thanks in advance.
    Regards,

    Hi Mesut,

iView works when previewed but is blanked when assigned to a role/page.

  • How to control explicit language downloads for multiple devices sharing one user id?

I set the parental controls for iTunes on my primary Mac under my account with my user id, etc.  My kids have their own devices but we all share the same user id for making purchases.  I had erroneously assumed that if I set the parental controls on my device, that it would apply to all purchases using the same id.  How can I make the parental controls universal?

So using nvidia-settings (I know it's bad), I made this:
    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Device0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    Option "Stereo" "0"
    Option "nvidiaXineramaInfoOrder" "DFP-1"
    Option "metamodes" "DFP-0: 1366x768_60 +1920+1080, DFP-1: 1920x1080_60 +0+0"
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    EndSubSection
    EndSection
After setting up everything in nvidia-settings and applying it, the monitors are in right position. The problem is that after a reboot, the smaller screen moves up, so it's not +1920+1080, but +1920+0.
Can it be connected with this issue?

Doesn't mean that you muddy up the forum. Do some researching on the issue while waiting for someone to answer. Post what else you have tried which hasn't worked so others don't waste time giving you the same solution.

  • Screen Sharing via iCloud on Lion Freezes at Login Screen

After updating to OSX Lion 10.7.3, screen sharing between two computers via the Internet allows me to connect to the remote computer and see the remote user's login screen, but as soon as I click on a user to login, the screen share image freezes before I can enter the user password.
Using iCloud Back to My Mac because all machines have the same Apple ID & password. Exact same setup worked before the 10.7.3 upgrade, but it could be coincidence.
    Details:
Can see the remote computers in my finder,
Can click on them and connect successfully using either the Apple ID or the name and password a user that is allowed under Sharing -> Screen Sharing,
When clicking on "Screen Share," the computers connect and I'm prompted to either "Ask to Share the Display" or "Connect to Virtual Display"Since there really isn't anyone using the computer, I select "Connect to Virtual Display"
After clicking "Connect to Virtual Display" the Screen Sharing window shows the remote computer's login screen, whcih shows the user names, their icons and "Sleep" "Restart" or "Shut Down" on the bottom of the screen.  One user has an orange circle with a white checkmark next to it.
Previously, I could click a user's name or icon, enter the password and control the remote Mac.  Now, not amount of clicking works.
Have tried disconnecting and reconnecting as different users or using Apple ID without changes in the perofmance. Have restarted both machines.
    Any help?

I'm having the same problem screen sharing to a Lion 10.7.3 machine, I get this message.
However, it works just like it used to when I screen share from a 10.7.3 machine to another Mac running 10.6.8.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

  • Right click in Screen Sharing causes Expose on remote machine

I have a Mac Pro at home. I have a hot corner for Exposé. I have a mighty mouse at both the host and client machine. In both cases, Exposé from a mouse pinch is disabled.
When I try and drag a file from one place to another on the remote machine, Exposé is triggered. I also use RemoteTap on my iPhone - when I connect using it, it forces a "spaces exposé" (shows all the spaces on the remote machine) and quits the Dock. I imagine these two may be related. Has anyone else seen this and know what may be causing it?
I should add that the desktop machine was a migration from my laptop. I have looked everywhere I can think of, but on the remote machine, when I am in front of it, Exposé is not just triggered without a real trigger. With the remote sessions, I have a hard time using the machine without exposé triggering.
    Thanks in advance for help...

I have the same problem with the dragging a file activating expose. SO ANNOYING!!!! It makes screen sharing (one of the main reasons I pay for MobileMe) absolutely useless. It can be solved, however, by disabling all hot corners. While that's a semi easy workaround, its incredibly annoying to have to do that each time I want to remotely log in. I really hope they fix it soon or they lost a MobileMe customer. I will just use a free VNC program at that point.

  • Screen sharing fails for one user

    Hi
I have an iMac and MacBook Pro, both running Snow Leopard 10.6.5. I have enabled screen sharing on the iMac, and can log in with one of my other user accounts (Greg). This works fine.
When i am on my MBP, logged in as Joe, and logged in as Joe on the iMac, i always get an "Authentication failed", but i can connect as Greg ok... I thought it was to do with the currently logged in user having the same short name, so i tried logging in as Greg on the iMac, and connecting as Joe from the MBP, but still no success.
Is there anything i can check?
    Thanks
    Joe.

Identical short user names on the different computers shouldn't be a problem - I have multiple Macs with identical short user names and have no problem.
As an aside, you don't need to already be logged in on the other computer; the VNC connection, if VNC login is permitted for that iMac user, would simply present the remote VNC client with its login screen, at which point you could login to the iMac as any user that you wanted, even though you made the VNC connection as someone else. Similarly, regardless of who is at the console on the iMac, the authorized VNC client user on the MBP can connect and view(/control) the screen(/keyboard/mouse).
In the iMac's Sys Prefs Sharing, when Screen Sharing is highlighted, what does it say for "Allow Access for:"?
In the iMac's Sys Prefs Security under the Firewall tab, is the Firewall on? If so, in "Advanced..." is the "Block All Incoming Connections" checkbox unchecked? In the application list there, what does it say about incoming connections for Screen Sharing?
Finally, the iMac and the MBP are on the same home LAN, i.e., the MBP is not having to traverse through your home router's firewall, correct?

  • Screen sharing and multiple users

I have an iMac at home that is used by multiple family members. I have multiple logins enable so it is common to have 2-3 accounts logged in at once. I would like to use screen sharing to connect to my account even when one of the kids is logged into their account.
I started by looking at the vnc processes. There is one process that run as root:
    root 21792 0.0 0.0 2437128 1736 ?? Ss 12:25PM 0:00.02 /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Su pport/RFBRegisterMDNS
Then there is another process for each person logged in:
    username 22006 0.0 0.3 2734876 13964 ?? S 12:33PM 0:00.29 /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Ma cOS/AppleVNCServer
So I have two questions. One is how can there be three processes running that listen on the same 5900 port at the same time and how does it decide which one to connect a vnc client to? My second question is how can I prevent the AppleVNCServer process from starting for each user. I've tried killing those processes but they respawn immediately.

    Hi
Thank you for your answer. Sorry to have been unclear - I'll give it another go :o)
Here is what I am trying to do:
I have 2 users (Plex and Ursus) that I want to have logged on at the same time. Plex will be "in the front" i.e. that is the screen that is seen if you are at the mini. Ursus is a user that is logged on but you cannot currently see (i.e. in the back as it where). I would like to work using the user Ursus (to, for example, rip a movie from a DVD (that I own of course :o).
Using file sharing would mean that I have 2 machines running and that I need to copy all the files from the one machine to the other, not exactly what I want but manageable.
I have managed to get this "partly" working - I am using Vine Server for Mac (http://www.testplant.com/products/vineserver/OSX) which allows me to start a VNC server on e.g. port 5901 and then screen share to that session. If I setup the second user (Ursus in this case) to use this server then I can connect to the "back" user. The only problem being that Vine Server seems to crash with Plex - as soon as I start it Plex just hangs and randomly crashes!
    Was that clearer?
    Thanks again
    Ursus

  • Is it possible for multiple users to use a "generic" account simultaneously without screen sharing?

Hey and thanks for checking out the thread.
I am wondering if it is possible to have users use a generic account at the same time without any sort of screen sharing.
I have set up a generic user account (for example useraccount, password 1234) for users to use in the time before I can set up a custom user name for them. However, I have run into some issues with this.
When multiple users log on using this generic account, their applications seem to be shared on each screen. In the room with multiple Mac workstations, if someone starts working on Photoshop, Photoshop will open on every one elses screen who is logged on under that generic account.
Is it possible for users to log on using a generic network account and have their own isolated work environment or is this sort of sharing a feature? I am new to Mac servers and am not sure.
    Thanks for reading the thread.

That shared-account approach seems impractical for the various reasons you've identified, as well as the inevitable issue of cleaning up the detritus that'll inevitably build up in a shared account, and for the lack of accountability for activities occuring under the shared account for both auditing and security, and sharing directories would tend to introduce obscure conflicts around which-file-version-wins file updates when the same file is used in several places, and would probably be contrary to any per-user application software licensing agreements that might be involved.
Put another way, get unique accounts created for folks, and work toward the ability to create accounts for arriving folks, and — if it's applicable here — talk to management about getting any per-user software licensing issues sorted out, whether that's having spare copies purchased and ahead or some advanced notice on accounts, or establishing group software licensing where that's available.
AFAIK, there are tools around which can automate account creation, too.  Either generic, a tool such as Passenger, or it's certainly feasible to script the account creation sequence.
Trying this shared-access generic-account approach just looks like it can create more work and more hassles and more effort to me...

  • Is Screen Sharing with multiple users possible?

I am trying to discuss some documents with multiple users. It works very well with just two users sharing the screen of one of them, so I was wondering if there was a way to have a third user participating. If iChat does not allow this, does anyone know a different software solution?

    No. (Not in iChat)
And I have not heard of anything either.

  • Screen Sharing Disabled Per User?

Hi, this is a repost from OSX usability forums...hopefully someone can help here:
I caught a kid cheating this morning by utilizing Screen Sharing to see what his neighbor was answering on a test. I would like to disable Screen Sharing as it pertains to the user, but I still need to run Remote Desktop and see all machines at the admin level. Each kid has an OpenDirectory account, so would it be possible to block at that level?

Block the Screen Sharing application. If the accounts are OD accounts, just add this to the MCX set and start enforcing an explicit deny on the Screen Sharing app. That should resolve it. The other option, assuming all systems have a unified admin account that the kids don't know, go into System Preferences > Sharing > Remote Management and choose "only these users" and add the local admin account only. That should set up a SACL for the ARD/Screen Sharing process to only allow access for the one user, not for all potential users of the machine.
    Hope this helps
