Screen sharing over the net. Is it possible.

I was wondering if someone with screen sharing abilities could help out. I was wondering. Is it possible to share screens over the net. For example, my mom is like a 100 miles away. Running Leopard. How could I access her screen so that I could show here what to do. Heres the states, her computer has a router. My computer has a router. How can we sharing screens. Where would be long into and how. I know of the program in System/corservices/screensharing When I click it it asks for host. I dunno if that was the right way to go but any help here would be amazing. Thank oyu.

It is possible apparently, but if there is a router in the equation, that may well cause problems. If your Mom is using a Mac, this screen sharing facility is also available via iChat.

  • Best Way To Set Up Screen Sharing Over The Internet

What is the best/simplest way to set up screen sharing over the internet so I can remotely control my Mac at home from my Mac at work? My Mac at work is running 10.5.6, my Mac at home is running 10.4.11.

    simplest
Get both Macs up to Mac OS X (Leopard). Then use Apple's MobileMe Back-to-my-Mac service.
Or, use iChat screen sharing along with the iChat free 3rd party Chax add-on which allows selected iChat Buddies to auto-accept an iChat screen sharing request. Free AOL Instant Messaging accounts can be used as the iChat accounts.
If you do not want to upgrade all systems to Leopard...
Next would be using the free LogMeIn.com account, or similar service. This will work
The above avoid needing to figure out how you get through the home routers, and provide encrypted screen sharing sessions.
After that you need to arrange for router port forwarding. If you want secure connections, then you should arrange to port forward the SSH port 22, then use ssh tunnels for VNC based screen sharing connections. There are GUI based utilities that will help setting up SSH tunnels. Do some searches over at VersionTracker.com or MacUpdates.com

  • How do i transfer files between two macs over the net (FTP)

    Hi,
Couldn't find a thread like this, apologies if its been discussed already recently, I'm trying to enable two iMacs both Intel, both running 10.4.10 to be able to swap files (quite large 350MB) over the net just using Tiger.
We both have .Mac accounts but the files only upload properly to our iDisk 1 out of 3 times and its getting annoying, I basically want my mate to be able to drag a file off my HD onto his via the net using no other programs just Tiger, is this possible?
If not, what's the best free program to use.
    Thanks

You'll have to get an FTP client as the Finder only reads, not writes to an FTP server. I can't suggest a free one. You will also need to open your computers up to the world. If you don't know how to do that, search for Port Forwarding and your particular router. You'll have to open up port 21 for FTP.
Plain old FTP is not very secure, so you shouldn't leave it open all the time. SFTP is Secure FTP, and you can use Fugu to use it. You'll still need to set up Port forwarding, but you can pick whatever port number you want. Fugu lets you pick the port number. You should set up standard users on each machine and make a sftpTransfer folder in the /Users/Shared/ folder. This will allow each of you to access the files. sftp allows anyone to see the directory structure, but still maintains the permissions from OS X. So, as standard users, you can look into each other's Home folder, but you won't be able to get into the subfolders or transfer files to or from any unshared locations.
By the way, I wrote an entire post describing how to use sftp from the command line before I decided to look for a client app for you. Then I found Fugu and changed it all.
    Edit:
I forgot to mention you must turn on Remote Login in the sharing pane, and you'll have to use port 22 as this is the only one Mac OS allows remote connections on.

  • Lion screen sharing over Internet

I'm having some issues setting up screen sharing.  The problem is that I set it all up and can see the other computer when we are on the same network.  But I cannot see the device when I'm back home and trying to screen share over the internet.
I need to be able to see the screen of my client's Mac while I am at home.
Here is what I've done to set up screen sharing:
Both Macs are running Lion 10.7.3
I have set myself up in the address book of the Mac I want to access. In my address book card I have multiple emails.  One of them is the email that I use as my Apple ID.
I turned on screen sharing on the remote computer and added myself to the list of people able to screen share by selecting my address book card that includes my Apple ID.
    Access is for all users
I have checked "Anyone can request permission to control screen."
On my computer I have ensured that my Apple ID is included in the Users and Groups control panel.
When I am on their network, in their home, I see their computer in the shared devices section of my Finder window.
I am able to request permission to screen share and am able to gain permission when they accept.
But when I get home, their computer does not show up in my Finder window under shared devices.
What critical step am I missing?
    Thanks!

Yes, I didn't say Back to My Mac doesn't let you share the screen over the internet - it does.  But it requires you to know the password of the iCloud account that is signed in on the client's computer, as I've said.  Your client would be nuts to give you that password, as would you be to sign in your iCloud account on his/her machine.  That's not an option.
Here's what Apple says about using Back to My Mac:

  • Is screen sharing through the Messages app encrypted?

The Messages app in Mavericks has the option to share your screen (Buddies > Share my screen...). Just learned about it today.
I've been wondering how secure it is to use over the internet.
Any thoughts as to if the screen sharing session is encrypted?
I'm using Mavericks, and haven't found anything that says if the sessions are encrypted or not.

    Hi,
The Messages app can use different ID to use the different services.
It can use Apple IDs to use the iMessages service (Text Only) But you can invoke FaceTime from an existing conversation.
By default you also get the Bonjour Account.
If you have other Macs on your LAN (and they use iChat or Messages with Bonjour Enabled) you can Screen Share with them (in addition to Video Or Audio Only chats).
You can join the AIM service with some Apple IDs (ending in @me.com and @icloud.com in most cases and sometime @mac.com depending on your OS version) and of course with AIM or AOL registered Screen Names.
Mac to Mac (iChat or Messages) these can Screen Share over the internet.
Whilst the Login may be SSL (AIM almost insist on in nowadays) the Video chats, Audio Only chats and Screen Sharing are Peer-to Peer connections.
There are steps in the connection process to make sure you are not vulnerable to "Man-in-the-Middle" attacks.
They will only work AIM to AIM.
Jabber (Or XXMP) accounts can include GoogleTalk or Google Mail IDs in reality or Facebook chat IDs are valid Jabber IDs.
You can of course register for a Jabber ID on any other Jabber server you know about.
These will work Jabber to Jabber must be to a Mac using iChat or Messages and not other apps or web Browser logins (As you can do with both Facebook and Google).
The Yahoo account is text only.

Where do I find the activation code to be able to watch NETFLIX streaming DVDs over the net??

Just to confirm: are you sure you entered the correct account info on the iPad?  (Some of my client's have more than one Netflix account.)  Then try resetting the iPad.  That often "fixes" many issues.  After that, you'll probably need to contact Netflix support to confirm that you do have streaming.  Otherwise possibly restoring your iPad so that it'll wipe the existing Netflix config, so you can re-enter it again.

  • Back To My Mac: Anyone get it to work over the net?

I can't. It works fine on my home network, an apple extreme and several expresses. But over the net it doesn't work at all. I've tried both from work, and also by logging on to my neighbor's airport network. in both cases, the icon for my home iMac disappears.
I downloaded the guide from the Apple site for BTMM and followed the instructions, but nothing seems to work.
Anybody have any luck with this? than

Do both routers have to be configured correctly? Both the router you're sending from, and the router your mac that's being controlled is talking to? I thought it was just the later...
<<Even if these routers do support one of these protocols and have this support enabled, odds are good your office's firewall is simply going to block any traffic it doesn't recognize. Similarly, unless your neighbor has agreed to let you configure his or her router as you please, I would not expect this to work, either. >>

  • Nokia - Firmware over the net and over the air gen...

Don't know if anyone else noticed this, it came out quietly as far as I can see, but now nokia are offering firmware upgrades to N series devices over the net (and over the air if you've an N80). See here http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,1522,,00.html?orig=/softwareupdate . A stroke of genius as far as I'm concerned.
As an aside, this also puts the latest firmware for Orange on the N70, and gives you an option to disable the dreaded "Homescreen of Death". Doesn't get active standby back though unfortunately.

No N80 support at this time though.
I'm keeping my eyes peeled though....

  • Can anyone advise on how to share large files over the net?

    Hi all.
So I need to share large video files over the net.
The files will be between 5 and 10 GB
Does anyone have a solution for this?
I have been using my ftp program and just giving the recipient the download link.
But its affecting my upload quota and the recipients download quaota with our ISP's.
Is there an easier way at all?
    Thanks.

Contact the ISP for a temporary exception on the quota, or to get an explanation of how long before you can send a second segment for the download.  You can split large downloads by UUEncoding them, or making separate disk image segments with Disk Utility.  You could also find out if any local WiFi hotspots don't have a quota issue.  Lastly, you could send a thumbdrive by mail.

  • I try to generate a chm file over the net and I get a compiling error message

    Hi all,
I am trying to generate chm files over the net, and the same project when I am generating the same chm locally works fine, however when I am attempting to generate the same chm on a network location, it gives me a compiling error and aborts the generation. It is also keeping the chm file open afterwards, so I have to reboot the machine.
It is RH7 working on a Windows XP Pro 32 bit.
    Thank you

It is not a project issue. RoboHelp is just not designed to work that way but like a lot of things, some people can use them outside what they were designed for. However, just because some people can work that way, it does not follow everyone can.
I've seen people with projects on a network and they say have been doing it for years so it must be OK. A while later they come back and say the problem is fixed since moving it locally.
Sorry but it looks like you are stuck with working the way you do or getting your colleague to do it. It might be as simple as he is on a different bit of your network.

Which operating system are you running on?
How are you trying to open the photos?
    - from windows explorer? - double licking or right clicking and selecting Open with?

Looking back at your other threads you seem to have had this problem before - what keeps changing?

  • Screen sharing and the existing plug-in

I'm thinking about building a nice e-learning solution but
screen sharing is essential. Can someone explain to me why it's
technically impossible to use the screen sharing api like it is
being used by ConnectNow? I don't mind that my users will have to
download the plug-in just like the ConnectNow users have to do.
Given the fact that CoCoMo is a hosted service it should be good
for the Adobe business and the technology is already
    there...

Nothing (or almost nothing) is technically impossible :)
The problem here is the addin has access to the client system
resources (screen and keyboard) and so for security reason it only
runs signed applications (and the only application we sign today is
    ConnectNow).
In order to enable SDK applications to run in the addin we
should either forego the signing (not an option :) or we get into
the business of validating and signing developer applications, with
policies possibly even stricter than Apple AppStore :)
We have some other ideas on how to offer this functionality
but right now are just ideas, but we understand that this is a
feature very appealing to many of you and and it's high in our list
    of most requested features.

  • ARD Over the net

    Hi All
Just purchased ARD and i need to know is it possiblt to log on to another mac and take control etc, over the interent. EG. I have a mac at home and i have another mac at the other end of the country, i have put the IP address in of the mac i want to see but now joy. Is it possible and any ideas why cant i see that machine.
    Cheers
    Cottie

"Just purchased ARD and i need to know is it possiblt to log on to another mac and take control etc, over the interent."
Yes. If you search the ARD forum you'll note that this question has been asked and aswered over and over again. What you'll find is that ports 5900 and 3283 need to be opened/forwarded on all routers and switches at each end of the connection.
So open them on any routers and switches on your local network, and do the same for the client you want to control at the other end.
Also make sure that Apple Remote Desktop sharing is turned on and configured in the System Prefernces --> Sharing for the client.

  • I cant boot over the Net

I tried a network boot by choosing F12 showed on the startup menu to connect to a W2K RIS server.
the system seems to ignore F12 and starts from the HD. the onboard LAN adapter (Intel 100) is activated.
    then i tried to make a net-bootdisk with the RIS-Server Tool RBFG.exe.
this tools sais that it cant find a netboot supported NIC in the system. grrrr
i just wonder whether PXE is supported in the BIOS of the pe865 board....
furthermore the onboard nic should be able to boot over the lan...
any ideas what i do wrong. I was 100% sure that this board supports PXE
    ray, switzerland

the KT6 with broadcom 5788 LOM supports PXE via netboot BIOS. I cannot find documention on this, though.
