Screen sharing posible at start with FileVault on

I  have a blind MM  running normal OS, but it functions in my network as print server, fax machine, Time machine BU etc.
If FV is off I can get in to it before it is logged in and enter the password to start it up.  Is this possible if FV is on?

Is this possible if FV is on?
No.

  • Screen Sharing - Unable to use with some users - Version 4.0.8 (619)

    Hello,
I got my mom, who is disabled, a year ago an iMac especially because we're not living on the same city and I wanted to be able to help here when problems occurs.
iChat was a great solution but I could never work it out. With some of my friends Screen sharing is working fine, with some not and I could never find a reason why.
I contact apple long time ago, no one answered.
I've don all Port forwarding on our both computer following the instructions here:
    http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Edimax/BR-6104K/iChat.htm
I thought if I can connect to others, than that means all my setting are correct.
Still, even though my mom got the same setting and can chat+video with her, I'm unable to do the screen sharing.
I find it very very frustrating.
    thank you very much

    Hi,
The Port Forwarding shown on the Port Forwarding site does include all the ports iChat 3 uses as listed here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1507
These include port 5060 that iChat 4 does not use and an extended range of A/V ports (20 as opposed to 10 by iChat 4).
However the iChat 4 range of A/V Ports is inside the ichat 3 range so they will work.
What this second Article does not tell you is the iChat Sharing port.
Testing has shown us that this port (which runs along side an Audio Chat) is random.
It seems that for most people this means using UPnP.
I see from the pica at the link you posted your Device has UPnP
I would use that (Disable the Port Forwarding).
Depending on the speed of your Internet Connection you may have to turn Off the DoS setting particularly if your Buddies are on a fast connection and can send you lots of data in Video Chat.
It may also pay to set your Mom's modem/router to do UPnP

  • Screen Sharing and VPN functionality with ARD

Can somebody with ARD tell me if the following setup is going to work? There's no demo version so I can't tell if it's going to be worth 300 dollars.
I have a number of local machines in a network and a couple external machines in other parts of the state that VPN in to the network. I want to be able to have a local machine that can screen share w/ voice reliably with these guys.
"Reliably" being the key. iChat screen sharing and VNC alternatives do not work reliably at all. They crash, they are slow, they sometimes disconnect video and keep the audio. Or some days they work perfectly, but that's few and far between. Zero-conf services like MacHelpMate work just fine, but I'm reluctant to pay 600 a year for something like this.
Is ARD going to be able to be able to fix this problem for me, or am I really just going to end up with more of the same issues?

ARD uses VNC for observation and control, so if you're having problems with iChat screen sharing and with VNC clients, I would not expect that ARD would be any better. My suspicion is that your network and/or VPN are cutting things off, since most people have found iChat sharing and VNC to be pretty reliable, but without being able to perform reliability tests on your network to VPN clients, I can't say for sure.

  • My MacBook Pro will not start up.  I only get a grey screen with the spinning wheel.  No blue page appears and the grey screen remains.  Tried starting with the Shift key but ineffective as well.

Can't get my MacBook Pro to start up.  Have shut it down several times and tried restarting but all I get is a grey screen with the spinning icon.  Apple Support online suggested starting with power button followed immediately with the shift key.  Same results.  Also tried power button with shift key, command, and V.  Black screen appeared instead with lots of data language but still no starting.  This final page was suppose to result in an internal system check and restart but nothing happened and the black screen remains.Where do I go from here?  Scheduled for the Genius Bar tomorrow but would like to resolve this beforehand.

You may be having a hardware problem that you cannot resolve on your own. Nevertheless...
...hold down the command and R keys whilst booting to try to get to your Recovery partition. If you can, use Disk Utility to try to Verify your boot drive (usually named "Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). If the verification fails, try to repair your hard drive. If everything appears to be OK, restart.
If you can't get into your Recovery partition, your problem is likely hardware related. If so, keep your appointment and see what the Apple techs have to say.

  • Screen sharing crashes remote machine with two monitors in 10.7.2

    Hello,
Whenever i connect to my Mac Pro (running 10.7.2 now), the machine hangs completely if my two monitors are connected.  This happens both over the network using Back to my Mac and Slink, when on a local network from my macbook Pro and a friends older iBook. (both running Lion). It also happens from a VNC client (remoter vnc) from my ipad. If i disconnect my second monitor, it works fine in all cases.  Is anyone else experience a remote machine crash when trying to screen share?
I can connect to the disks fine. it's just screen sharing
I recently refromatted my machine and it was working fine before then -- but i imagine the problem stems from 10.7.2 since i both reformatted and upgraded.
    thanks

  • Undocumented shared folder, name starts with BEW

I recently found that my Windows XP system has some shared folders with names that begin with the letters BEW followed by a lengthy hexadecimal string. I suspect that Bonjour is responsible for this since I have found it on two computers that both have recently installed Bonjour software.
Can anyone confirm this, or is this caused by some other software?

I am also experiencing this same issue. Have you found a resolution for it?

  • Can connect with Server Admin and Server Prefs, not Screen Sharing or ARD

Just set up 10.5 server on my G5, and trying to connect from 10.5 on my iMac. I have tried both with the server System Preferences set to allow Screen Sharing via VNC, and with Remote Management enabled for ARD. In both cases, I get authentication errors when trying to connect from home. I have tried with both the full username, and with the short name of the only account on the server. My assumption is that, since this is the administrator account, I don't need to setup explicit privs for it on the server.
I can authenticate without any trouble with both Server Admin and Server Preferences.
The Firewall is not enabled on either machine, although I am behind a NAT router at home -- is it necessary to open any special ports to enable screen sharing? Is it possible that having these ports closed would produce an authentication error?
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi
I'm going to assume you configured your Server in Standard Configuration and not Workgroup or Advanced?
When using Standard in setting up the server DNS is automatically configured for as well as the Server taking an Open Directory Master Role. The admin account created at the beginning is for administering the Open Directory. Unknown to you and not documented at all - as far as I can see - is the 'Local Administrator' (localadmin) account.
You only become aware of this account if for some reason you have a problem with the Server which involves demoting to Standalone (ie not an Open Directory Master) once this happens you find you can't log on to the Server anymore or communicate with any of the Server applications because it won't accept any username or password other than root and localadmin for the name and the password defined for the original admin account you created right at the beginning.
Sometimes it does not even take demotion to find yourself locked out of the Server. Some have experienced this problem when running the Security Update or when some other problem has occured.
Part of the process of creating an Open Directory Master involves the creation of a 'special' directory administrator account. This account is used for administering the LDAP node. If demotion takes place this account gets blown away along with all users and group accounts that exist in the LDAP node, in fact everything to do with Open Directory is destroyed apart from Users' home folders.
Why demote if this happens? Sometimes the LDAP database gets damaged/corrupted beyond a point where normal troubleshooting methods fail. This can happen for a whole variety of reasons but more often than not is due to a poorly configured DNS Service. You basically only have two options once you reach that stage. A server reinstall involving a format and rebuild or a demotion to Standalone. Which option would you choose? Prior to demotion you can (if you have the chance) export users and groups or even archive the LDAP database itself for restoration later on. This is a useful option as everything to do with the LDAP Server is retained - passwords, users, groups etc. The other method of saving users etc does not retain passwords.
As time goes on and you become more familiar with your server you will find more and more of this information out for yourself. Hopefully the simple advice I've given helps you understand Open Directory a little better.
    Hope this helps, Tony

  • Screen sharing stuck on 'Connect...' - but only on one client account. Please help!

I've got a bizarre problem that cropped up sponaneously, and which I can't for the life of me seem to reslove.
    I have 2 home machines:
MacBook running 10.6.8  (Server / Media machine)
MacBook Pro running 10.7.4 (Client machine).  Apple Remote Desktop software is installed on this machine, and connections through it work fine.
A few days ago, the sidebar "Share Screen..." link on the client machine stopped working.  All I get is the 'Connecting...' dialog box, endlessly.  The bugger of it is that this is only happening with my main account on the client machine. Switching into another (unused) admin account on the client results in the 'Share Screen...' button working as expected.
I've tried the following cures, found on these forums, to no avail:
Reset PRAM and NVRAM on both systems
    updated all software
    repaired permissions on both systems
changed bonjour names of both machines
    rebooter & power-cycled router
killed the NetAuthAgent process a billion times
trashed all of the preferences, caches, etc. for screen sharing and remote desktop in the afflicted user account on client machine
    etc. etc.
As far as screen sharing connection options go, these are my results:
using connect to server (via finder > go > connect to server), and plugging in the address (vnc://192.168.0.103): works
launching /System/Library/CoreServices/Screen Sharing.app, and plugging in the above address: works
connecting via the Apple Remote Desktop software: works
using the "Share Screen..." link from the Lion Sidebar: DOES NOT WORK and results in the stall mentioned above, constrained to my primary user account on the client machine.
As mentioned, this was working properly until a few days ago, and stopped spontaneously, with no changes to either system.
Any help finding a resolution to this would be greatly appreciated; this is driving me utterly bananas .

My wife ran into the very same problem today, while trying to connect Screen Sharing to her media center Mac Mini (server) from a Mac Book Pro (client). I was also unable to connect from my machine as well when logged into my usual account but noticed I had no problem with a Guest User account (as you've described), but had also tried most of the unsuccessful attempts at solutions that you've enumerated.
Then, I read this very similar thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4131788?start=0&tstart=0
...and logged out of our now defunct MobileMe accounts on the affected machines. Upon hitting the "Share Screen..." button again, I was now prompted for a local login and password to the Mini, and once that was input, Screen Sharing connected and started up without any problems! Yes!
Given the similarity of our problems, I hope this works for you as well. My best guess is that Screen Sharing might be prioritizing the use of MobileMe authentication over local logins and passwords, and some of Apple's recent work in decommissioning MobileMe had unexpected results for folks like us.

  • IChat screen sharing - beat head against wall

Been going at this for hours to try and solve my attempt to have my dad share his screen with me. I'll try to list all relevant info for assistance. I have read many of Ralph Jones' posts, but I haven't resolved my situation. I am trying to use screen sharing with my Dad.
I recently moved 12 miles, keeping the same ISP Frontier with dsl and they gave me a different modem. Went from the Westell A90 - 750045 - 07 to the Netgear B90 - 7550044 - 07. Software interface is the same. The other change this week was I "upgraded" my Dad to an iMac G4 1.25 with 10.5, gaining screen sharing in iChat. He had a older iMac with 10.4 before the upgrade. I have a MacBookPro with 10.6.8. Also, part of the new move I started using the OBi110 voip device for Google Voice free phone calls. I worked on this problem with the device plugged in and removed from router. My screen sharing issue continued both ways. May be an issue, don't know. Port conflict? Issue continues when it's unplugged.
We can video chat and audio chat and text. After failing to screen share with the new Netgear, I switched back to the Westel. Screen sharing working for 1-2 seconds then stopped. I believe with both routers I got 'Screen sharing failed to start because" An unknown connection error occurred." '
After messing with port forwarding on the Westel with no success, out of frustration I switched back to the Netgear and here I am hoping to get this to work. It SEEMS that port forwarding is the issue talked about the most, so I'll explain the best I was able to do with this. Here is a screen shot of my port forwarding.
Also, connection doctor says this for both modems.
My dad's connection doctor does not have the Network status option (older version of iChat), so I can't isolate the problem to him or me, except that I believe it is with me.
I think I told you all the info and I have found is trying to solve this. I would  GREATLY appreciate any help.

    Hi,
    1) My name is Ralph JOHNS
    2) The first posts does not show me pics from some reason.
    3) the second post pic has nothing to do with iChat or Messages Screen Sharing.  It is about a stand alone app that can also be used.
    4) forget Port Forwarding.
Screen Sharing in iChat or Messages is a Audio Only chats with a VNC connection alongside.
The VNC part is on a random port and therefore cannot be set up in Port Forwarding or Port Triggering.
    You should use UPnP.
Most Netgears (when using their Own Software) tend to have a menu item for UPnP and it is also ON by Default.
However I think the Netgear you list is a branded software option for the ISP you have.
    Undo any Port Forwarding settings.
Turn On any UPnP setting  (Should be a simple Enabled/Disable check box).
If the Google Voice is a piece of Hardware make sure it is on it's own port.
A Company called Vonage do somethings similar but the instructions are to put it in line between the router and the computer.
This causes problems as it then tends to "suck" all SIP data and try and send it to the phone whereas iChat and Messages use the same SIP Protocol to initiate calls.

  • Screen sharing without Port 5900?

I have a Mac Pro (desktop) on Lion connected to a router and internet via Cat 5 Ethernet. I have a Mac BOOK Pro on Snow Leopard which I often get online wireless, in our home, but in other rooms.
I would like to use Screen Sharing to control the Mac Pro from the Mac BOOK Pro while the MacBook Pro is on wireless.
My understanding is that Port 5900 is opened to facilitate this, but also have learned that having port 5900 is ill-advised due to hacker attacks.
Is there a way to do screen sharing across wireless, but with 5900 closed? Or..if 5900 must be opened, can I be secure somehow, or just take my chances?
    thank you!
More details: The wireless router has its firewall enabled, and a decent password, and runs WPA2
Both macs have firewall enabled, robust passwords, PLUS, both computers operate with a Standard (not Admin) user.
Thanks for any help with this.
    ray

most routers have a wired and wireless network. some times you have to configure the router to allow devices on the wireless network talk to devices on the ethernet network. some times this is reffered to as bridge mode.
for troubleshooting perpoes, you could turn off the wirewall on both computers. If you have remote management configured and enabled on the mac pro. the MacBook Pro should be able to see the mac pro on the network, and connect to it. (dock, click on finder, menu bar, go menu, connect to server, browse.
if you can't find or connect to the mac pro. check the router to look at your wired vs wirless network. what model is your wireless enabled router? is the mac pro plugged into the wireless enable router by ethernet ? or is it plugge dinto another device? if so what?
if you can connect, but only when the firewalls are off, then you would probable want to allow incomintraffic ARD on your mac pro. and allow out going traffic from ARD on your MacBook Pro.

  • IChat screen sharing dreadful quality

I remember when Leopard first launched this feature was great - it used my full internet connection speed and hence displayed in high resolution. At some point all that changed and it now seems limited to around 80kbps in both directions and i've checked this on several Macs on different networks and ISPs. I can be having a video chat at 800kbps in both directions and see it drop to 80kbps the moment a screen sharing session is started. At this low resolution it really isn't possible to 'collaborate' on image based projects. I wonder, is this speed generic to everyone? I have Apple Remote Desktop to fall back on but Screen Sharing is very convenient.

On the basis a Screen Share is an Audio Chat+ as it were 80kbps sounds very reasonable.
What speeds do you get in an Audio Only chat ?
