Screen Sharing Spinning Connection

I have been using Screen Sharing to access a headless Mac Mini. The screen sharing portion works fine, but something in the Finder throws up a dialog asking me to:
"Enter the name and password to share the screen of the: name of Mac Mini""
I put in the correct information and the dialog box goes into spin cycle, with the words in the lower left corner: Connecting ...
Since it never connects this dialog box is left on the screen and there is no way to get rid of it - the Cancel & Connect buttons are dimmed. Very frustrating ...
Does anyone have any idea what's happening here, and how to avoid this is the future?
Screen Sharing in working fine.
Thanks

This seems to be a HUGE bug that has been around for ages - I found at lest one thread of people complaining about this over a year ago!
Screen sharing usually works ok for me but this lingering login window is a real bust!
You can get the window to go away by logging off or pulling up activity monitor and killing "NetAuthAgent"

  • Screen sharing only connects as audio chat...

When i try to start screen sharing with one of my clients, I can hear the noise that ichat makes on a successful connection, and the 2 way audio chat starts. but the invitation window just spins it's wheels and perpetually says "starting screen sharing..." and i never see the remote screen.
Screen sharing works with everyone else but this one person. btw, he is using a brand new airport extreme for a router...
    any ideas?

Answering my own question: turns out I had an old vnc server still hanging around, called OSXvnc. When any used was logged in, it was waiting for vnc connections and failing. Once I thought to look in /var/log/system.log it was pretty obvious.

  • Screen Sharing with connected display switched off

I have a 2009 Mac Mini connected to my TV using a minidvi > hdmi adaptor.
If the TV is turned off and I try to access the computer using Screen Sharing, I only ever get a blank screen.
If the TV is actually turned on then screen sharing works fine.
If i disconnect the DVI adapter then screen sharing works fine.
I would like to use Screen Sharing without having to turn on the TV or disconnect the minidvi>hdmi adaptor.
    Is this possible?
    Cheers Russell

It's kind of complicated, but the explanation would be something like this: a Mac relies on something called a Plug and Display driver in order to properly configure its graphic's output and send it to an attached display. The P&D driver is also referred to as EDID and you can read more about it on Wikipedia if you care to.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EDID
The VESA organization that controls the standard for EDID and DDC specifies that a host system, meaning the Mac in this case, be able to power the DDC channel and the display's EDID function even when power is turned off on the display. But not all manufacturers adhere to that part of the standard, especially true for some TVs. So when your TV is turned off, the DDC channel ceases to function and the Mac looses track of the TV and unfortunately sends no output in that case.
The little box I referenced in my earlier post will keep the DDC channel alive at all times so the Mac will always send video out regardless of the power state of the TV.

    Hi,
There are two Articles as Apple Calls them now.
This one was written for iChat 2 (Panther) and updated for iChat 3 (Tiger) when Jabber was added
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1507
It lists all the ports iChat 3 uses for AIM, Jabber, Bonjour and A/V chats.
This one http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2282 Lists the changes regarding the A/V stuff
So what we have is iChat Logging into AIM on port 5190 using TCP as default.
This port is used on the UDP Protocol to Send files or pic (Includes Pics in Chats) and Direct IMs (Same but without pics or files)
Bonjour iChat requires that ports 5297, 5298 and 5353 are open to the UDP Protocol and port 5298 also needs to be open to the TCP Protocol.
Jabber uses three ports all on TCP 5220, 5222, 5223
This is for Login and sending IMs and files
    iChat 3 A/V Chats use 22 ports
5678 on UDP for the Visible Invite
5060 on UDP for the SIP (Behind the scenes connection/invite process)
4 of 16384-16403 in a one to one chat.
iChat 4 reduces this to 11 ports.
    5678 for Visible invite
    16402 for the SIP bit
Staying with just one port from 16393-16402 starting at the top as first choice.
Undocumented in iChat 4 is the Screen Sharing port.
Testing has revealed this to a random port. (There is also an Audio chat along side this Screen Share).
The Mac Firewall in Leopard Certificates Apps to allow them through the Firewall so you don't have to enter ports there.
Set of pics for iChat 3 in Tiger Firewall
Modems that route and routers can have several means or methods of opening the ports.
Port Forwarding will need all 29 (or 19 ) ports opened and pointed in most cases to One IP (Computer)
UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) hands control to the App to open ports (much like the Leopard firewall)
Some Devices can have Port Triggering as well
This allows multiple computers but needs some set up for iChat to set the port 5678 as the Listening ports to open all the other A/V ports.

  • Screen sharing stale connections

One of my workstations (running 10.7.6) has stale sceen sharing connections. When you shut this workstation (2010 iMac) down, it reports that there are open connections, even if all other workstations and devices on the network are not operating. How can I clear the list of open connections on this workstation?

OK, thanks. I'll try that next time.
I was under the erroneous impression that port forwarding isn't necessary when the LAN computer IP address is included in the incoming string.
So how is it that Apple's Back to My Mac remote connections work without port forwarding? Is it because the original connection to the Back to My Mac server was initiated by the LAN computer?

  • Screen sharing  and connectivity

i want project the application and notes etc whatever there on iphone screen to lcd tv or lcd projector, is this possible kindly let me know.

    No.
Currently, only video and photos can be projected from the iPhone using an appropriate dock connector.

  • Screen sharing connecting then immediately disconnecting

I've recently bought an Intel Mac Mini for my Mother to use, and installed it at her place with Leopard. I'm running Leopard on my Macbook pro, and was hoping to use iChat screen sharing to solve problems for her. Now my problem here is that when I try to initiate screen sharing, the connection goes through, and sometimes (but not always) we see the large writing across the screen, but then it immediately disconnects citing the inititiator as disconnecting the screen sharing session. This happens whether I initiate screen sharing or my mother does.
I am on a 10+ meg broadband connection with 700kb upload, and she's currently on a 2 meg connection with 256 + kb connection. Is this part of the problem? I've opened port 5900 on her router to pass through to her computer. Also internally on my network ichat sharing works as it should.

After an hour if pulling out my hair, I finally had an idea of what might be causing the crash... I noticed I had my old iSight plugged in (the external firewire iSight) into my Apple Cinema Display. I unplugged it and iChat screen sharing worked PERFECTLY. You should also know that I don't have problems with my iSight, it works well on Video Chat and Audio Chat and even presentation mode but, it screwed up screen sharing.
In conclusion, if you're experiencing sudden connection losses with iChat screen sharing, check to see if you have an iSight plugged into your Mac and unplug it.

  • Screen sharing can't connect

My husband and I both have mac books and are trying to use screen sharing on ichat. Audio chat works fine as well as video chat. But when we try to use screen sharing, it connects for about 2 seconds, you can hear the audio and then it disconnects with the error of: disconnected from screen sharing because: screen sharing could not be established. I don't understand why the others work fine, but screen sharing won't. Please help!

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
You have posted in iChat 2's forum.
I have asked the Hosts to move it to Leopard > iChat and Screen Sharing.
iChat Screen Sharing tends to need your Router or Modem if it routes to use UPnP to open the ports.
This is because the Screen Sharing part happens on a random ports and not one of those listed in the two apple Articles on the Ports of iChat.

We have a vacation home with a Mac Mini installed behind a standard cable modem / router.  I occasionally VNC using the Lion Screen Sharing function (Connect to Server aka Command-K, vnc://ipaddressofvacationhome).  I have the ports open on my router, everything worked well up until today.
I was having some redraw issues with Screen Sharing over the internet, so I thought I'd try another VNC client to see if that worked any faster / better.  In Sharing/ Screen Sharing I enabled "VNC viewers may control my screen with password" (usually i just login with the user account of the machine with the built in client.
Anyway, I connected this way with COTVNC once and didn't like it, so uninstalled it and went back to use my built in Lion VNC app.  Now the VNC session is crawling slow (10-20 seconds to register a click) and I've tried everything to get it back from restarting to turning screen sharing off and on, unchecking VNC viewers may control my screen with password... everything.  It seems that COTVNC has crippled my VNC connection and I have no idea why.  A google search came up with nothing, so I thought I'd come here.  The weird thing is... it's not physically taxing the cpu or anything, becuase if I connect via teamviewer that is also installed that is snappy.  It's only when I use VNC.  Sure I could continue to use teamviewer, but I liked the response time using the native client.
Any ideas?  Is there a way to reset the VNC service or something to clear the cobwebs of COTVNC away?

I should also add that this mac mini in the vacation home is headless (no monitor).  I'm not sure if COTVNC could have messed up some video setting when it connected which the machine couldn't repaid upon disconnection because of the lack of montior attached.

  • Chicken of the VNC connects to my PC running RealVNC, Screen Sharing can't?

    Hi,
One of the big features I was looking forward in to Leopard was being able to connect to VNC servers using the OS instead of a dedicated app, but when I try to use Screen Sharing to connect to my PC which is running a VNC server, I get the error:
"Connection Failed .... Please make sure that Screen Sharing (in the Sharing section of System Preferences) is enabled on the computer you're attempting to connect to. Also make sure your network connection is working properly."
This also happens if I try to make the connection via directly launching Screen Sharing or from the side panel of a Finder window or by doing command-K.
The weird thing is that Chicken of the VNC connects to the server without a hitch. Anyone know what might be wrong here? The PC is running RealVNC Personal Edition and has Bonjour for Windows installed. The Mac and the PC are on the same subnet.
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Finder probably isn't auto-detecting the VNC server because it likely isn't being advertised via Bonjour. I don't think Bonjour for Windows does much aside from give a Windows box the ability to listen for Bonjour printers and see Bonjour HTTP bookmarks. I'm unaware of it performing any sort of advertising of the services on a Windows box.
For Finder to do the auto biz, you will likely need some other sort of Bonjour advertiser, like Rendezvous Proxy or a mdns DNS server sending out an appropriate rfb.tcp service advertisement.

  • Screen sharing and multiple users

I have an iMac at home that is used by multiple family members. I have multiple logins enable so it is common to have 2-3 accounts logged in at once. I would like to use screen sharing to connect to my account even when one of the kids is logged into their account.
I started by looking at the vnc processes. There is one process that run as root:
    root 21792 0.0 0.0 2437128 1736 ?? Ss 12:25PM 0:00.02 /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Su pport/RFBRegisterMDNS
Then there is another process for each person logged in:
    username 22006 0.0 0.3 2734876 13964 ?? S 12:33PM 0:00.29 /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Ma cOS/AppleVNCServer
So I have two questions. One is how can there be three processes running that listen on the same 5900 port at the same time and how does it decide which one to connect a vnc client to? My second question is how can I prevent the AppleVNCServer process from starting for each user. I've tried killing those processes but they respawn immediately.

    Hi
Thank you for your answer. Sorry to have been unclear - I'll give it another go :o)
Here is what I am trying to do:
I have 2 users (Plex and Ursus) that I want to have logged on at the same time. Plex will be "in the front" i.e. that is the screen that is seen if you are at the mini. Ursus is a user that is logged on but you cannot currently see (i.e. in the back as it where). I would like to work using the user Ursus (to, for example, rip a movie from a DVD (that I own of course :o).
Using file sharing would mean that I have 2 machines running and that I need to copy all the files from the one machine to the other, not exactly what I want but manageable.
I have managed to get this "partly" working - I am using Vine Server for Mac (http://www.testplant.com/products/vineserver/OSX) which allows me to start a VNC server on e.g. port 5901 and then screen share to that session. If I setup the second user (Ursus in this case) to use this server then I can connect to the "back" user. The only problem being that Vine Server seems to crash with Plex - as soon as I start it Plex just hangs and randomly crashes!
    Was that clearer?
    Thanks again
    Ursus

  • Why do I need to start up Screen Sharing twice to get it to work ?

I have an Intel Mac Mini connected to my TV, so I started using Screen Sharing from my MacBook Pro to be able to work on it when others were watching TV.
Both Macs used to have OSX 10.5 Leopard, and everything worked fine.
Now they both have OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard, and whenever I startup Screen Sharing, the connection-windows asking for my Name & Password comes up properly, but then it hangs... it stays in "Connecting..." for ever (litteraly).
I'm not able to quit or force-quit the connection-window by then, so it stays in view...
(Screen Sharing isn't even listed in the force-quit list as a running app)
    but...
when I just try Screen Sharing again, I get connection immediately and it seems to work flawlessly...
...it's just that the connection-window is impossible to quit...
it stays in view an is really annoying...
    this looks really crappy...
can anyone tell me why I do need to startup Screen Sharing twice to get it to work ?
    Is this a bug ?
(If so : please apple fix this a.s.a.p.)
...or am I doing something wrong ?
(if so : what am I doing wrong ? and how can I get rid of this annoying screen ?)
Thank you for your kind reply.

it's October and this really annoying problem still exists !
the unnamed screensharing-loginwindow keeps "Connecting...", and I'm unable to shut it down...
...even after my screen sharing session is over
...even force-quitting is impossible (this 'app' just isn't showing up in the force-quit-window...)
please Apple - fix this ; under 10.5 it was working great !
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this ?
    (besides restarting my Mac)
    Thanks !

  • Screen sharing to OS X Lion Server with non-admin account

I have set up a Lion Server with one admin (in addition to the root user) and several non-admin normal accounts. In Server.app, I have enabled remote login with ssh, and remote management via screen sharing.  I am unable to use Screen Sharing to connect to the server from the non-admin accounts, but able to use the admin account. I've read that it is only enabled for admin users, but need to access from non-admin accounts, and I can't add these accounts to the admin group. Is there a way to do this with Workgroup Manager? I tried changing the Remote Management settings in System Preferences by adding the non-admin, but when selecting 'Observe' and 'Control' in the options for the user, they are not saved.

I resolved this issue by deselecting the "Enable screen sharing and remote management" in Server.app and going to System Preferences, Sharing Preferences, Screen Sharing, and allowing access for "All Users".  If you have some users you want to allow VNC, you can create a group, add the allowed users to the group, and add the group under "Only these users".

  • Mavericks: Screen Sharing Resolution changed to low-res

I just updated my two slave macs (Mac Pro, Mac Mini) to Mavericks (main mac still on 10.8.5), and when I do screen-sharing by connecting to each, suddenly I'm getting each slave mac in a square screen at low-res -- 1280x1024. THere are no other options to return these to full 1920x1080-sized windows.
Some other forums recommended a free app called Display Menu that puts a screen resolution in the upper menu bar, but when I select 1920x1080 as the resolution for the sharing window (which it has always been), I get a black screen in that window and the only fix is to turn off the slave mac manually, and when it comes back on and I reconnect to it, it reconnects with the square 1280x1024 monitor window.
It used to be that I got the 16:9 screen share window and I could scale/resize it by dragging corners but that option is gone.
Anyone know how to get that old 1920x1080 resolution back in my screen-shared windows?
    Kerry

Ok so the solution was to user a different VNC client in Ubuntu. "Vinagre" allows you to view your remote session scaled to any size you like. It will however retain the dimentions of your MacBook screen.
One thing to be aware of is that when authentication your VNC session (entering your username and password) Vinagre only allows you to enter a password of 8 characters max. So if your password is longer then 8 characters you will have to shorten it to user Vinagre... A bit annoying but at least it works.
    Techy notes:
It is actially the VNC server Vino that Vinagre uses that is enforcing the password length limit. So if using an alternative client that uses Vino as it's VNC server this limit will apply for that client also.
Even though you are scaling the client session down VNC sends the host's full resolution so you will still transfer a lot of data over the network.

  • Screen Sharing Broken - Shared Computer Half Ghost/Half Real

I am trying to screen share into a computer on my local network called "Autumn's Mini." It appears both in the sidebar and the Network window in the Finder.
Both File Sharing and Screen Sharing are enabled on the mini, and permissions are set correctly.
Autumn's Mini contains an internal HDD called "Autumn's Mini HD." Several years ago this HDD was named "Sara's Mini HD" and before that it was "Sara's iMac HD."
Screen sharing never connects, I get an endless "Connecting to Autumn's Mac Mini..." dialog box.Autumn's Mini is running the latest version of Lion and I have attempted to screen share into it from computers running both Lion and Mountain Lion.
File Sharing behavior is odd. Mounting Autumn's Mini works fine, and the current contents of the HDD are all available. The HDD however shows up as "Sara's iMac HD."
Other than the ancient "ghost" name of the HDD itself, file sharing works perfectly. But I'd really like to get Screen Sharing to work - and the part of my psyche that enjoys the elegance of Apple products would like to get the HDD appropriately named.

It didn't work. But it got me thinking. So I toggled Screen Sharing off altogether, and restarted the mini.
When I booted it back up and attempted to Screen Share, I got this dialog, because it was set to allow all users. I then selected Administrators only, and was given the usual login dialog box and got into her screen.
    Thank you.
It's not that important, but I wonder how to clear "Sara's iMac HD" from whatever bit of my Mac is remembering it that way.
