Screen Sharing to Device with iCloud

Prior to Yosemite, every machine associated with my iCloud ID would show up in the Finder under "Sharing".  If I selected that machine's name, I'd see the shared folders, and be able to activate Screen Sharing directly to that machine with a button click.
Since upgrading to Yosemite, I no longer see these machines available to connect-to.  I've tried disabling and re-enabling "Back to my Mac".  I've also upgraded the Server service running on the host machine I'd planned to connect-to in case that was a factor, but it hasn't resolved the problem.
Anybody know how to get iCloud-linked machines to show up under Sharing in the Finder so I can easily establish Screen Sharing connections?
Thanks

If you changed nothing other than to update your client Mac to Yosemite, what you describe strongly resembles an earlier bug making an encore appearance.
What follows is what I had to say about it roughly a year ago, updated for today. Some of it will be obvious to experienced Mac users so overlook that.
This can be a challenging problem to diagnose. It appears that Mavericks Yosemite has changed something about BTMM resulting in it being less reliable than it was with Mountain Lion Mavericks. It works, but not always, and I have yet to correlate its cause to anything specific.
Here are some possible hints.
Make sure you are using a compatible router. BTMM requires a router that supports NAT Port Mapping Protocol (NAT-PMP) or Universal Plug and Play (UPnP). Most routers will work without any trouble at all, but an Apple AirPort will eliminate any uncertainty.
Review all the steps in OS X: Using and troubleshooting Back to My Mac with your iCloud account
The most useful suggestion may be the simplest:
Toggle Back To My Mac off and back on by deselecting and then reselecting Back To My Mac in iCloud System Preferences.
Sometimes that's all it takes.
You can also try some simple steps with Terminal to verify that your BTMM settings are correct:
dns-sd -B _rfb | grep icloud
That will show the Macs using your iCloud ID advertising screen sharing services. If you get no response, ensure the Sharing services on the Macs you wish to use remotely are configured correctly. Perhaps Mavericks simply reverted their settings during installation, as a "security" measure.
dns-sd -B _afpovertcp will show Macs advertising file sharing services.
To ping your Mac use:
ping6 <macname>.<nnnnnnn>.members.btmm.icloud.com
where <macname> is the name of your Mac and <nnnnnnn> is your Back to My Mac account number. See below. You should get a response from ping6; if there is none then screen or file sharing will not work. If the response times are excessively long then the connection may time out and fail.
The name of your Mac is in System Preferences > Sharing > Computer Name:
Your Back to My Mac account number can be determined with the following
dns-sd -E
It will respond with something like this
Timestamp    Recommended Registration domain
0:43:20.322  Added    (More)              local
0:43:20.322  Added    (More)              icloud.com
                                            - > btmm
                                            - - > members
                                            - - - > 0123123
0:43:20.322  Added                          icloud.com
                                            - > btmm
                                            - - > members
                                            - - - > 987654321
The numbers at the end (0123123 etc) are your BTMM account numbers. Most users will have only one.
^C to terminate each of the above.
Good luck.
An example of the above is as follows. Assuming your iCloud ID is 123456 and the Mac you're trying to connect to is named MyMac the above ping6 command is
ping6 MyMac.123456.members.btmm.icloud.com
You should get a response.
You can also try to login to the remote Mac using ssh. Assuming your login name is telstar that would be
ssh -l telstar MyMac.123456.members.btmm.icloud.com
Both should work regardless of your location, whether both Macs are on the same LAN or separated by thousands of miles makes no difference because they are using iCloud services and not local Bonjour to access the remote machine.
Given that your Mac is not appearing in a Finder Sidebar under "shared" I doubt either of the above will work for you.
Report it to Apple. The problem may be related to the particular model Mac you are using, or not.
That's all I have to offer.

  • How to create a shared Apple ID with iCloud email address for household?

I would like to create a shared Apple ID with iCloud email address that wife and I can share and access from separate devices? A shared household iCloud email address would be useful for email contact for creating/managing bill accounts for utilities, school for kids, bill pay etc…  I currently have my own Apple ID on my MBP.
    Thanks!
    dlaron

If you mean that you would like to create a shared iCloud account with a shared iCloud email address and you already have an iCloud account of your own, you can do that by creating a new Apple ID (see https://appleid.apple.com/account), then use the ID to set up a secondary iCloud account on your Mac by going to System Preferences>Internet Accounts (or Mail,Contacts,Calendars)>iCloud and signing in with the new ID.  You can then turn enable Mail in this account to create the shared email account.  Secondary accounts are more limited than primary iCloud accounts, and will only sync Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders and Notes.
Once the account is created, it can be added to iOS devices by signing in with the ID in Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Add Account>iCloud.
Or, if your only interest is in having a shared email account, you might consider just setting up a free Gmail account to share.

  • Does Ichat screen sharing work properly with Lion OSX?

Hello, I am planning to install the new OS Lion soon. However, I was wondering if the Ichat screen sharing works properly with Lion. I use the screen sharing quite a lot to communicate with my co-workers, so it's a deal breaker if the app crashes when using the screen sharing option. Thank you!

    Hi,

  • Having to delete your same iMessage conversations on multiple devices with iCloud enabled

I have iCloud enabled on my Mac, iPad, and iPhone.  Apple could possibly develop a feature where if one device with iCloud that is turned on deletes a message conversation, it deletes the converstation on your other (turned on) iCloud devices as well.  This way, when you switch from using your iPhone to iPad, you will not have the 10 different converstations you started on your iPhone that were deleted, on your iPad to delete as well.

I'm sorry I'm not being clear. I know that the sent boxes are separate. What I meant by combined mailboxes was the inboxes for each of the two accounts across all devices. That is, say, for my MobileMe inbox, being able to see all contents of the MobileMe inbox on all my devices, regardless of which device I first read the message on. And then the same for the other mailbox too. And finally, for these to be marked read / unread on a consistent basis and to be notified on the iOS devices too.
    Not too much to ask?!

  • Can't share photos using shared Photo Stream with iCloud Control Panel for Windows

BACKSTORY: My friend took pictures of my family. I want to see the pictures he took. We live about 2.5 hours apart by car. Gas prices are too high for me to just drive down with an external hard drive to get the pictures and I might as well throw my money out the window if I were to ship him a hard drive and he ship it back. SO. I ask him if he would share photos with me and he quickly agreed. He added me to a Photo Stream  he has. ok cool. I recieve the invitation email just fine but this is the error I get when I click on the link:
    ERROR MESSAGE:
    Photo Stream
Follow these steps to join a shared photo stream
1.Make sure you have an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running iOS 6 or a Mac running OS X 10.8.2 withiPhoto 9.4 or Aperture 3.4 or later installed.
    2. Sign in to iCloud on your devices.
    3. Open the invitation email on an updated device and tap the Join this Photo Stream button.
    WHAT I NEED:
How can I view shared photo streams using iCloud Windows control panel 2.1.2.0? How can I work around this error message? I don't own any of these products that apple wants me to own in order to view these photos! I don't have the cash to go out and purchase them. What can I do to get "my" photos? Do I have to be signed into my friends apple id to see the shared photos?
    What I've tried:
I already have the icloud control panel installed and updated to the latest version.
I'm signed into iCloud on the control panel. (no apple id password issues)
    I have photo stream checked.
I have my photo stream checked
I have shared photo stream checked.
I have tried copying and pasting the link into the address bars of Safari for Windows, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer,  and Firefox respectively and pressing enter to load. all present the same error message.
I visited iCloud.com to see if there was anywhere to access the shared photo stream there... No option exisits
Checked my photo stream folder in windows explorer. it's completely empty. I haven't put any of my own photos there so nothings missing per se... I just can't see my friends shared photos.
    MY SET UP:
    Windows 7 64bit Home Premium
    4gb of RAM
    iCloud control panel version 2.1.2.0
I don't own any version of Outlook, (if that matters. I doubt that it matters at all in this case.)
I don't have any iOS Devices or a mac capable of 10.8. My MacBook is stuck at 10.6.8. It's a late mid 2008 just before the aluminum unibody computers came out. If I had only waited another month... sigh. Murphy's Law is alive and well.
any sugestions, especially correct answers, are welcome. please help me figure this out. Thanks in advance.

    Hello desert_dweller5,
It sounds like you art trying to access a Shared Photo Stream, but you do not have one of the devices to enable your Apple ID as an iCloud account.  The following article provides information on how Shared Photo Streams work:
    iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4486
The article states that for privately Shared Photo Streams to work, the recipient will not only have to have an Apple ID, but it will have to be an iCloud account:
Friends and family with iCloud accounts can view your photos in the Photos app on any device using iOS 6 or later; on a Mac in iPhoto 9.4 or Aperture 3.4 or later; on a Windows PC with Windows Vista or later and iCloud Control Panel 2.0 or later installed; or on a second generation or later Apple TV with software version 5.1 or later installed. They can also view your photos on the web if you enable Public Website in the settings or options for your Shared Photo Stream.
Since you do not have an iCloud account and just and Apple ID, your friend can share the photo stream as a public website so that you can view it, as stated in the same article:
Can I share with people who don't have an iCloud account?
Yes. If you enable Public Website in the settings or options for your shared photo stream your photos will be published to a website that anyone can view in an up-to-date web browser.
To be able to change an Apple ID to an iCloud account, you would need an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5 or later or a Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.4 or later as stated in the following article:
Creating an iCloud account: Frequently Asked Questions

  • Video and Screen Sharing not working with new modem

I give up. Just replaced my old dead Motorola DSL modem with a new Motorola 2210-02 DSL Modem and now iChat video and screen sharing aren't working. I am running 10.5.7, have an Airport Extreme, and 2 computers with cameras (a G5 with an iSight, a Macbook Pro with built in camera) and both worked fine before the modem switch. iChat works, just not video or screen sharing. I have 3 or so friends that I used to be able to video chat with regularly before the modem swap. Spent 3 hours and $50.00 on Apple support with no results. Also talked with my provider (AT&T/Yahoo) and they were no help. Anyone?

  • Is there a way to create shared iTunes playlists with iCloud?

For instance, if I were to create a playlist called "Playlist X" on my Macbook Pro, is there a way for iCloud to put that same playlist in my iMac's iTunes library? And if I were to add a song to the playlist on the iMac, could it appear in the playlist on the Macbook? This would be much more convenient than having to update two different playlists manually.

This doesn't make sense. ...juat sayin'
Location services are a part of your iOS device (or Mac). You don't "turn on" location services with iCloud. You can visit http://www.icloud.com and use Find My iPhone to see the location of the device if you want (assuming you have enabled this from the iPhone first).

  • Can't send mail on iOS 5 devices with iCloud

A long time ago I signed up for a .Mac trial to use that address with iChat. The trial expired, and, as expected, the address continued to work with iChat, though it no longer functioned as an email address. It then came to be my Apple ID. Now, having set that Apple ID up for use with iCloud, my iOS devicess are having trouble sending, and only sending email from my iCloud address. The reason is this: I logged into <username>@mac.com for iCloud (as that's my Apple ID), and everything set up right except the mail address that iOS Mail thinks I have. It thinks the mail address for the iCloud account is <username>@mac.com. When I send mail to <username>@me.com, my iOS devices get it just fine, but when I try to send mail back, it tries to send it from the @mac.com address, and therefore fails as that is not a valid email address.
I've tried to go into the settings and change the email address that it uses for iCLoud, but with no luck. I see a place to change it, but it is grayed out and won't let me select it and bring up a keyboard to change it.
Is there any way to tell it that it assumed the wrong email address for my iCloud? Or is there no way to send iCloud email from my iOS devices?
    Thanks in advance!
P.S. I can send mail via iCloud from the web app and from Apple Mail (OS X Lion), but not from iOS devices because of this glitch. I can also send mail from iOS devices using other email accounts (Gmail, Yahoo).

I found a work around that works.   Got to Settings...Icloud....account......advanced....outgoing mail server.....
    Add an "other" server.
    Host Name p01-smtp.mail.me.com
Put in your me.com email address as username and your Apple ID password
    SSL is on
    Authentication is password
    Server port 587
This worked for me.....I will use this until the bug is fixed.  (you may need to use p02, p03 etc)   Don't make this server your primary.   Leave it in "on" status in the other category.
    Good luck

  • Screen sharing not working with eMac lab after 3.2 update

Screen sharing no longer functions after applying the 3.2 update in our eMac labs running 10.4.10 and PPC processors. However, it still functions in our iMac labs running 10.4.10 Intel processors. Before update, I was able to screen share with all the computers in the lab. After the update, I am only able to share with one single computer at a time. Not very useful anymore for teachers to use for demonstrating purposes at our school. It definately had something to do with the update since it was working moments before the update. Please help before I have to call Apple regarding this issue. Again, it only seems to affect screen sharing across PPC eMac computers, not Intel based computers.

Through much testing at our schools, we determined that the problem lies with the update and the admin machine running ARD. If the admin machine is less than a G5 (doesn't matter if it is intel or PPC), ARD will not screen share with multiple computers (more than 3 machines) at a time. If you have a G5 admin machine, you probably will not experience this problem. Apple has yet to contact our district regarding any options for fixing the problem. We are currently in the process of shuffling computers to make sure there is a G5 admin machine in every lab to run ARD. However, I still think Apple needs to recognize this as a problem with their update. Screen sharing is a great tool for teaching class and it is too bad that with the current 3.2 update, it breaks the ability to use it with "older" G4 macs. Hence, that is why your eMac screen sharing is not working anymore. I can only hope for a prompt update to ARD to remedy this situation.

  • Screen Sharing suddenly fails with "Communication Error" in console log. File sharing works fine. Thoughts?

I have been using Lion provided Screen Sharing for months without incident.  Suddenly (I do not believe there was an intervening o/s update), it will not connect.  I get a "Connection Error" dialog after a minute or two.  The console log shows the same thing w/o any useful info.  I can share files with the target mac fine and run time machine without error.  Any ideas on what's up?

  • How can i sync my blackberry device with iCloud

How can i sync my blackberry device with iCloud

You can't. iCloud is an Apple service for Apple mobile devices and Macs/PCs.

  • I have a BT internet pop account and have been told this cannot sync across devices with iCloud. Is this true?

I have a BT internet pop account and have been told this cannot sync across devices using icloud. Is this true and are there ways round it?

That's correct. iCloud handles only its own email, and has no relationship with other accounts. It's in the nature of a POP service that messages are downloaded from the server to the machine - it was really designed for single-computer use in the days when a second computer was an unheard-of luxury. You can usually set the email client to leave message on the server either permanently or for a specified period, so that other devices can also access the messages, but of course they won't see replies or sent messages.
IMAP (which is what iCloud uses) is the better protocol to use - the messages live on the server and the various computers and devices read them from there, like webmail - and a service which provides that will behave in exactly the same way as iCloud but independently of it. You should ask BT if they can provide an IMAP version of the account - some ISPs provide both, some don't.
