Screen sharing to windows xp

hi i was looking on the system preferences and i found out that i can screen share on my local network but i am not sure exactly how to. if anyone knows how to please help me. thanks

I am able to get the VNC connection from XP (UltraVNC) to the Mac (with Screen Sharing enabled). The connection only works at the highest screen quality (select AUTO settings under the Quick Options in ultra).
My problem is that I'm trying to connect with a lower resolution to improve speed/refresh, since I'm connecting through the ether and not on a LAN. Anyone figured out how to connect with 16, 64, or 256 colors from UltraVNC?

Can someone suggest to me good software for screen sharing from my Mac at work to some of the Windows workstations, servers here at my work?

  • Screen Sharing With Windows XP

I'm having a bit of trouble getting the screen of a Windows XP computer to show up on my Mac, using OS X's Screen Sharing feature.
First I launch the Screen Sharing app, found at: Macintosh HD > System > Library > CoreServices > Screen Sharing.app
A window pops up that says "Connect to Shared Computer" and prompts me to enter the "Host:". I type in the Window XP computer's IP address "192.168.0.15"
A new window pops up that says "Enter your password to share the screen of 192.168.0.15". I type in the password required to log into that Windows XP computer and click Connect.
A little progress indicator spins, saying "Connecting..." and then... "Connection failed to 192.168.0.15". "Make sure that Screen Sharing is enabled on the computer to which you are attempting to connect"
I'm running UltraVNC Server on my Windows XP computer. What am I doing wrong?

I do not know anything about UltraVNC, but traditionally, the VNC password is a separate password that is set as part of the VNC server configuration. It is generally NOT the user account password.
There is a Microsoft Remote Desktop Client available if you would prefer:

  • Screen sharing performanace differences on MAC and WINDOWS

    Hi All
I am having a big issue of screen share latency (working on WINDOWS) which is about to 20 - 30 sec sometime and 10 - 15 sec in general. I was thinking that It could be because of my network limits but when on the same time and in the same network I publish my screen share from MAC, miracle is happening, there is unexpected difference and there is no latency and if there, it is sometimes about 2-3 sec hardly. My maximum users are using WINDOWS and so that I am searching a solution for this latency problem. Please suggest a solution.
    Thanks.

    Hi Raff,
We have tested it on following combinations on port 443 , sending and receiving.
    1. Screen sharing on MAC machine on LAN (Result: Good speed of sharing)
    2. Screen sharing on MAC machine on WiFi (Result: Good speed of sharing)
3 Screen sharing on Windows machine on LAN (Result: Too much Latency in receiving)
4 Screen sharing on Windows machine on WiFi (Result: Too much Latency in receiving)
Specially we have noted on windows that after some time , data from windows machine (Any windows machine) screensharing addin process stop sending any significant upstream data(used netlimiter to verify this) , so reciver receives almost nothing or very delayed screen updates.
I tried to figure out using Wireshark , but not sure that which packet to look for which can cause issues.I do not see any dropped packets atleast in packet scan. But packet sending speed decreases after some time on Windows machine.
We use same settings of performance ,Quality ,Fps and Keyframes on Windows and MAC while sharing screen.
What to look in for wireshark.
Your inputs will be very helpfull.

  • Screen Sharing window expansion glitch

Has anyone else experienced when you click the upper right button to expand (and only expand upon collapsed on open) in the Screen Sharing.app window that it gets all glitchy in the title bar area. I have tried this on a few computers. It seems to open happen on the 20" iMac viewing the 17" iMac. I'm curious if this has to do with emulating a smaller screen.

  • Accessing Muse via Screen Sharing has bizarre mouse behavior

When accessing another Mac using Screen Share... built in to the Finder, I can see Muse, but any attempt to edit a page displays strange mouse behaviour. Specifically, clicks down and up seem to be mis-interpreted as clicks held down by Muse, and only by Muse. Other apps don't show this behaviour. 100% repeatable, and easy to reproduce -- just click on an object and try to move it and you'll see how it's tough to unclick and stop dragging things around. Seems to be specific to Muse.
Using Lion on local machine, Snow Leopard on remote computer running Muse. Licensed on both locations, just sharing to give design advice.

    See this at MacFixIt.

  • Screen Sharing Troubles

I have been attempting to use the screen sharing through iChat. When I "ask to share screen" with my buddy, he will see the invitation and accept. We will both see the screen sharing starting window, but it seems to hang there. I never get his screen. If he selects "share screen" with me from his Buddy list it works fine. If he asks to share my screen and I accept it works fine for him as well.
Any ideas as to why when I ask for his screen and he accepts that I end up in with never changing "screen sharing starting" window?
    Thanks

When you select / accept to share your own screen with your contact, your screen stays the same. (a red screen sharing icon will blink in the menu bar)
When you select / accept to share your contact's screen, your own desktop will reduce to a small box in the corner, at that moment you have your friends desktop in front of you.
You don't exchange screens, you both have the same desktop.
Try to use a different desktop picture, it is less confusing.

  • Windows 8 and Screen Sharing Lag

Is there a problem with Adobe Connect 9 and Windows 8 screen sharing?  I've notice there is a about a lag of 2secs or more when I share my screen in Windows 8.  i.e. If I open a Window or do anything, the participants don't see the change until 2 to 3 secs later.
I've ruled out IE and Chrome because they both have the same problem.  I also ruled out the machine because if I run a VM Ware virutual machine with Windows 7 on the Windows 8 machine, then share the screen in the VM Windows 7, there is no lag.

Alright, well then you are possibly looking at a network issue (congested network), possibly a computer performance issue, some conflict with Connect and another application on your comptuer causing the lag, or something else entirely. Are you able to share your screen without the lag on another computer on the same network? If so, that will elminate the network piece and narrow it down to your comptuer.
You might want to consider working with Adobe Support to see if they can help identify the problem as well. 800-945-9120.
You can also try the test your computer page to see if anything comes up there. You can subsitute the server URL for the system you are using, but for my account it is: Test Meeting Connection

  • Screen sharing between server and iMac appears to connect but no window opens

We have been trying to screen share between a server and iMac. Both are running Snow Leopard 10.6.7. It seems like we connect using the share screen app because we don't get any error messages after inputing the username and password but no window opens for the server we are connected to. When I look under the windows tab I can see a checkmark next to our server name and trying 'bring all to front' doesn't do anything. The video card on the server died and was removed by our tech support who said we could still access the computer via screen sharing. Would the server not having a video card be the cause of our problem?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
A Bit for other reading this thread.
To change the Login port for any AIM based name you have to obviously Log out first and then Change the port (SSL might need to be selected first) and then Press Enter to "Set" the port.
This use of the Enter key is the bit that is different to earlier versions of iChat.
    For Gary,
Which Thomson-Alcatel device do you have ?
Thomson-Alcatel Speedtouches used to work well when the firmware that ran them was at Version 4.2.5 or less.
At least at this level you could access the device via Terminal using Telnet and then access the Command Line Interface (CLI) and "Unbind" SIP from port 5060
Later versions of their Firmware did not allow for a full Unbind of SIP and Video and Audio chats could only be partially successful (about 15 buddies out a list of 50
Of course using UPnP to open ports for iChat 4 helps with the Screen Sharing as the process is an Screen Share with an Audio Chat along side and both have to work/connect.
I am surprised to hear that in iChat 5 that Screen Sharing is not working when Video and Audio chats are.
For this reason I would ask how the ports have been opened in the Thomson device ?
After that I would keen to know if the Thomson Device or the Time Capsule is doing DHCP to the LAN ?
(Share an IP on the Time capsule is to Enable DHCP)
I am not sure how AT&T expect anyone to use their site to gain help or see what they currently offer when you have to type in a phone number or area (ZIP code).
I did enter the example number and got to this set of pages http://www.att.com/esupport/main.jsp?cv=801#
I see no reference to any Thomson-Alcatel device.

  • Forcing Screen Shared Windows to Appear in a Secondary Display

I have a 2009 Mac Mini supporting dual displays (extended desktop mode). The second display is used for "screen sharing" a second mac mini on my network located in a different part of the house.
Right now, each time I open screen sharing, I have drag the shared window over to the second display. I can force applications that are native on the mini with dual displays to always appear on the second display by "opt + dragging" their window, but this doesn't seem to work with screen shared windows.
My question is: Is there a way to force the "screen shared" windows to always appear in the second display.
    Any thoughts?

Rather than Apple Care or the Apple Store, there are business solutions people in Apple who have the specific experience to deal with business' needs and applications.  You should specify that you want to contact one of those individuals.  On the apple.com website you can click on "Business Store".  You'll get a page with an 800 number for "Apple Business Experts".  It is 1-800-854-3680.  Those are the people you ought to speak with.

  • Remove little window "my computer" screen when screen sharing with iChat?

Anyone know if it is possible to remove or minimize the little window when screen sharing with iChat? if you try to drag it off the screen, it just pops back. It does not seem possible to close it without getting booted out of the screen sharing.

As the "little Screen" is either your Desktop or the other Desktop depending which you have as the current one you are working in it seems silly to have no access to changing back and forth.
But as you say or rather imply it does sometimes occupy the space you want someone at the other end to see and you can not access that part of the screen or if the other end is trying to show you something it can be hidden my your own desktop.
AT present Not Even Chax does what you want.

  • Connect from Windows through screen sharing (VNC) and get out of full screen mode

How do you get out of fullscreen mode?
I connect to a OS X Lion computer through a Windows computer (which actually also is remote).
I use TightVNC software on Windows to connect. It's the only VNC software I am able to connect to OS X Lion with. TightVNC is kind of weak otherwise in the way that it does not have features for OS X targets - like you can't send "command" key pushes, or even Ctrl pushes and other F2 etc keys just don't really work.
Which means I cannot exit full screened apps by way of Command-F or similar. Moving the mouse cursor to the top of the screen also does not pop down the menu (although on some occasions I have been able to do this, I'm not sure how and it's terribly hard to reproduce).
I'd need a on-screen way (like a button to click) to get out of full screen mode.
    Any ideas???

Are you using TightVNC because you found it was the only VNC client that worked well with Mac OS X built-in VNC server?  Or is there another reason?
Vine Server (aka OSXvnc - free to use the server)
    <http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11283/vine-server-%26-viewer>
plays nicer with 3rd party VNC clients, so that you could try any number of other WIndows VNC clients.  Maybe one of those will do a better job of sending Command/Control/Option keys.
But if you do install Vine server make sure you turn off Mac OS X Screen Sharing (and/or Remote Managment) so that you do not conflict with port 5900.  Or via Vine Server configs, tell Vine Server to use a different port number, such as 5901, then make sure you connect to the correct port from your Windows client.

  • Screen sharing -- Mac to Windows

I have two Windows XP computers and one Ubuntu computer that I want to share screens with my MacPro (OSX 10.5.5).
I have TightVNC one one of the Windows XP computers and RealVNC on the other. Both computers have Bonjour installed -- for what it's worth.
My goal is to have all three of my networked computers show up for screen sharing in the Finder's SHARING section.
I enabled Remote Desktop on the Ubuntu computer and "ta-da" it showed up in the Finder's "Sharing" section to screen share with no other intervention whatsoever.
I can't figure out how to make the Windows XP computer show up in the Finder's sidebar.
Note I can use Chicken of the VNC to connect to ALL machines on my network via their static IP addresses. It works fine -- it's just that I think it's very slick and convenient to do it the OSX "way" instead of using the CotVNC client.
What does it take for the Windows XP computers to advertise their screen sharing capability so they'll show up in the Finder's "Shared" sidebar??

Actually, the 'dns-sd -R' command only registers a service running on the machine on which you are running the command. Notice how there is no parameter for the remote host's IP.
To register a service running on another machine, you have to use the proxy command, 'dns-sd -P'.
The syntax, per the command help, is:
    dns-sd -P <Name> <Type> <Domain> <Port> <Host> <IP> \[<TXT>...\]
Playing around with it, I've only been able to get it to work as such:
    dns-sd -P label rfb.tcp local. 5900 name.example.com 192.168.1.10
Strangely enough, I had to pass it both a fully-qualified host name that resolves properly in DNS (or maybe .hosts -- I didn't test that) AND the IP address (even though I'd think if it had one, it wouldn't need the other.) Also, just the host name without the fully-qualified domain didn't work either, even though it resolves fine for ping, etc.
Alternatively, one could use a program like Rendezvous Proxy.
