Screen sharing w/o keyboard/mouse control

Hello,
I would like to be able to share my screen without the other person having keyboard and mouse control. How do I do this? Thanks!

Hi,
You ask them very politely not to touch anything.
There is no way to take complete control in the manner you describe.

  • IChat screen sharing - switch computer keyboard shortcut? Help please.

When I am screen sharing with a person in order to switch to my computer I must move my mouse and click the window in the bottom left...when doing so I interrupt something someone is doing on their computer...is there a keyboard shortcut to switch between the two computers without moving your mouse?

Ok, I just found out how to do this. It isn't an official solution, but it works quite well.
Simply press the power button. You will then regain control of your mouse. Hit command-tab or use the dock to switch apps. Do not click cancel until you've switched apps, or you'll be thrown back into the screen sharing. Once you're out of iChat, you can do whatever you need to do. The Mac you were sharing with will remain in the background above your desktop, so you can keep an eye on it. When you need to get back in control of the action, just click into the other Mac's screen, which is effectively an iChat window. iChat will return to the foreground, and you'll be back where you started. Good luck, and enjoy!

  • Screen Sharing & Spaces : Left/Right Mouse Button Issue

I am using the Spaces and Screen Sharing feature of OS X 10.5.1 on my MBP to connect to my Mac Mini that is currently running OS X 10.4.11. I am able to connect fine and access the Mini without issue. However, if I switch spaces on my MBP to do another activity, and then switch back to my Screen Sharing session with the Mini, I am finding that the left mouse button is acting as the right mouse button. The only way to correct the problem is to terminate the screen sharing session are restart it.
Has anyone else encountered this? Anyone know of a fix?
BTW, the same issue occurs when the Mini is running OX X 10.5.1 so I do not believe it is an issue using two different versions of OS X.

Yes, I have the exact same problem and its frustrating as I am not as familiar with OS/X as I am with Windows.
When I had similar problems with Windows I would shoot explorer.exe from the TaskManager, wait for it to die and then start a new explorer.exe process.
I tried doing the same with OS/X. I sniggled around with mouse clicks and keystrokes until I got the Force-Exit window, highlighted "Finder" and the button would change to "Relaunch".
Another time I tried to solve this was with combinations of either Control, Option or Command and the tilde key ~.
It is frustrating and I want to avoid reboots (why go the Microsoft way?).
Hope this helps (even after months).

  • When i boot my mac it opens with a grey screen and the wireless keyboard, mouse illustration and won't do anything elsens,

When I turn on my iMac (27" intel) all I get is connect my wireless keyboard and mouse on a grey screen. The mouse will connect (sometimes) after I wiggle it a bit, but nothing from the keyboard. After a few minutes the disk utilities box comes up. I ran permissions and repair permissions, verify and repair on my computer and it tells me everything is ok. But it won't let me past this screen. Any suggesions? Help!?!

    Hi Grace Be,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The articles below may be able to help you with this.  I've summarized some of the key points below for you.  Click on the links to see more details and screenshots.
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
Disconnect, test peripheral devices and network cables
Note: "Peripheral devices" refers to external devices other than what came with your Mac, such as hard drives, printers, or hubs that you connect via a USB or FireWire cable.
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Disconnect all peripheral devices such as external hard drives or printers (leave only the display, a keyboard, and mouse connected).
    Disconnect any Ethernet cables.
    Start up your Mac.
If you can start up this way, one or more of your peripheral devices (or installed software related to the device) is probably causing the gray screen issue. Connect one device, then restart your Mac to test for the issue. Repeat the process until you locate the device at issue. Check with the manufacturer of the device for support or possible software driver or firmware updates that may be available for the device. Try a different cable with the device if possible (such as a different USB or FireWire cable).
If you are using a desktop Mac with a third-party keyboard and/or mouse device, and the issue still occurs, try starting up with an Apple keyboard and mouse connected instead. Try starting with no keyboard and mouse connected, then connect them after start up. Also, try a different USB port on your Mac.
If the gray screen issue persists with no devices connected, go to the next section (with the peripherals still disconnected).
    Perform a Safe Boot
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
Start your Mac, then immediately hold the Shift key. This performs a Safe Boot. Advanced tip: If you want to see the status of a Safe Boot as it progresses, you can hold Shift-Command-V during start up (instead of just Shift).
Note: A Safe Boot takes longer than a typical start up because it includes a disk check and other operations.
If your Mac starts up as expected, immediately try restarting.
If the Safe Boot does not work, or the restart after a successful Safe Boot does not work, go to the next section.
    Reset the NVRAM / PRAM
Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for several seconds to force it to power down.
    Reset the NVRAM / PRAM.
I hope this information helps ....
    Have a great day!

  • Lion screen sharing breaks mouse for local user.

I think I've discovered a bug. I have a new iMac 27" on 10.7.2 and a MBP on 10.7.2. The iMac has two accounts created, mine is the administrator, my girlfriends account is standard user. She likes to use the iMac with the bigger screen so I retreat to the MBP and use screen sharing to continue working on my documents that are under may account.
The problem is that the mouse will stop working for my girlfrends account when I have Screen Sharing running. Her mouse becomes unresponsive and just jumps around the screen once in a while. As soon as I close Screen Sharing her mouse returns to normal behavior.
    Has anyone heard of this?
I tried creating another standard account as a test, same problem.
    Thanks,
    Ron

10 days with no ideas = apple's new screen sharing in lion is broken.

  • Screen Sharing No Longer Responds from Master Machine

For a long time, I have used screen sharing from my iMac to control my Mac Mini on the TV. Now, I can connect to screen sharing but the Mac Mini no longer responds to any commands from the iMac.
Another factor that may have contributed to this:
I use Hippo Remote to control the Mac Mini as my home theatre PC. This also has worked fine for a long time. Now, however, it can hardly get a connection anymore and when it does, I have no control over the Mac Mini any more. I've emailed their tech support but with little result.
The only other thing I know of is that I'm running two video server clients on my iMac to provide remote access to video files via my iPhone or iPad. I don't think those should interfere with the Mac Mini though.
Has anyone else run into this? Know of any solutions?
I've tried reboots, turning off the Hippo Remote VNC server on the Mac Mini, and other servers but nothing is getting me what I used to have.

Apple Tech guys and girls do not post in these User-to-User forums.
On a Specific day there was a problem with the SNATMAP server and everyone had issues with iChat Video and Audio chats.
The Original Poster did not seem to make it to the other threads at the same time.
I informed him that there had been a issue and that it seemed sorted for most people and asked if he still had an issue.
On the basis he said he was working - the problem and cause of that problem have been dealt with.
At which point do you not get that, in this thread, the issue discussed is sorted for the original poster and that you should move on ?
I will be quite happy to discuss your issues in your thread.

I can not make people mark their threads as finished.
It also does not mean that the issue does not arise for you.
What I am saying that in this context the solution will not suit your situation.
An External event (SNATMAP Down) to all parties caused the problem he had and a second External event (SNATMAP up) solved it.
AS SNATMAP has not fallen over recently you have another problem and it is not related to this one.
I hope this is clear enough for you.

  • 10.5.5 Screen Sharing Toolbar

    Hello all.
I have a question regarding the new 10.5.5 update and its impact on the screen sharing toolbar.
Prior to the ARD Update and the 10.5.5 one, my toolbar in screen sharing was enabled to show controls such as:
-Quality (Black and white, greyscale, 16 bit color, 32 bit color)
    -Full screen
-Send/ Get Remote contents of clipboard
    But now has only
    -Send/Get Clipboard contents.
I got a backup of it on a mac pro and copied it and trashed the preferences to it but it still doesn't allow me to chage the quality or go into fullscreen mode to a remote computer.
Any Ideas? I really don't want to have to do an archive and install...

I re-installed leopard (Archive and install) and put the app on my external, then put it on my internal HD.
i also reworked the preference file:
    (drag to ~/Library/Preferences)
    http://www.pages.drexel.edu/%7Ecjm67/Sullivan/OS%20X/com.apple.ScreenSharing.pli st
You can download the following also (the working one)
Application-Unnzip and Drag to /System/Library/Coreservices and restart a few times-

  • Screen Sharing Suddenly Not working?

I've been using Screen Sharing for months now to control my Mac Pro Desktop that is connected to my Plasma TV with my Macbook Pro laptop with no issues. Suddenly now a message pops up everytime I try to connect telling me that the connection doesnt support encryption and the video stutters (advances every few frames at a time). Anyone know how to fix this issue?
    Thanks!

I failed to mention in my previous post that my work computer is showing up on my network.

  • Drag and drop screen sharing

I have been able to successfully connect to another iMac on my wirless network with screen sharing. I cannot figure out how take a file on the remote desktop and drag and drop it on to the compuer that I am working on using screen sharing...

From +*Take Control of Screen Sharing in Leopard:*+
    "GET BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY WITH VNC
VNC is a widely used remote screen control technology that underlies
Leopard’s Screen Sharing software, and that Apple previously
packaged and continues to ship with Apple Remote Desktop (ARD).
VNC clients are available for nearly every platform, including nearly
every release of Mac OS X. There’s even a version for a “jailbroken”
iPhone—one that’s been modified to allow third-party software
    installation.
VNC service is split into client and server components: a client is a
viewer; the server handles access to a computer’s screen and manages
    input from the remote user.
Leopard’s pair: In Leopard, the server is the Screen Sharing
service in the Sharing preference pane, and the client is the Screen
Sharing application, which the Finder launches if needed.
It would be neat if Leopard could be controlled by and access VNC
clients, right? Well, it can, using either Leopard’s built-in support or
third-party software. Leopard’s support, built into the Screen Sharing
service controlled via the Sharing system preference pane, is just fine,
but if you need more options, you might consider an alternative; see
the sidebar Picking VNC Software, a few pages ahead, for details."

  • Cannot authenticate screen sharing

I have an Alu iMac running 10.5.8, and an older Powerbook G4, also running 10.5.8. I've set up the account preferences so that anyone on my local LAN can share both disks and screens.
Taking control of the Powerbook's screen from the main iMac is no problem - I can see the PB, ask to share screen, am prompted for username and password, enter them, and I'm in.
But, I can't get the reverse to work. From the PB, I can see the main iMac, I select and ask to share the screen, but there's no prompt for a username, just a request to 'enter the password to share the screen of the main iMac'. Whatever I type, I'm told that 'the Authentication failed'. I can see shared disks and access them, it's just screen sharing that doesn't work.
Suggestions? I've set screen sharing up with minimal access controls at the moment - anyone should be able to connect.
    Russell

I found a folder called OSXvnc in /Library/StartupItems.
Deleted it, restarted, and the problem went away. I never have installed Vine.

  • Screen Sharing Available "Current Status"

All of a sudden clients in my lab display "Screen Sharing Available", I try to control any aspect and get an error saying that the task is not supported on MacBook 6? How can I get back to control my macs?

I followed article HT2577 on uninstalling Apple Remote Desktop 2 or 3.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2577
I disable Apple Remote Desktop client software:
On the client computer, open System Preferences and click Remote Desktop. If necessary, click the lock button to authenticate as an administrator of that computer.
Deselect "Make Apple Remote Desktop active on this computer."
Deselect the checkbox of each account that was enabled for ARD. (Alternatively, you can open Terminal and use the kill command to stop the ARDHelper process, followed by the ARDAgent process.)
To Remove Apple Remote Desktop, execute these commands in Terminal:
    $ sudo rm -rf /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu\ Extras/RemoteDesktop.menu
    $ sudo rm -rf /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/
    $ sudo rm -rf /System/Library/PreferencePanes/ARDPref.prefPane
    $ sudo rm -rf /System/Library/StartupItems/RemoteDesktopAgent/
    $ sudo rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.ARDAgent.plist
    $ sudo rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.RemoteManagement.plist
Then I reinstalled remote desktop 3.2.1
    Then updated to 3.2.2

  • Keyboard and mouse events during screen sharing

    I use OS X 10.6.8, my mom has 10.5.(8?).
Screen sharing used to work fine. I am always viewing her screen.
Lately, none of my keyboard presses or mouse clicks make it through the connection to her machine. I can 'influence' but not really control the placement of her cursor as viewed on my screen. She never sees the pointer move from wherever it was before I started trying to move it. I can see her screen fine, and even see some frame rate if she plays a video from an email message (but I don't get the audio stream). We can't continue talking while the video is playing though because our voice connection has too many dropouts.
She did change from using Comcast to using AT&T Uverse several months ago. I can't remember exactly when the troubles started, but it could have been at the time of that switch. She is getting a lower speed connection than she used to.
Are these issues strictly a problem of a too-slow connection, or is there something else to try. I'm most concerned about the keyboard and mouse loss, since that means I have to describe every action to her instead of doing anything myself. I can live without viewing videos over a screen sharing link...

    Hi,
It is worth doing  Speed check at both ends
    http://www.speedtest.net/
It may also pay to open the Connection Doctor (Video Menu) during a Audio or Video chat and checking the Bit rate and Framerate (on Video).
iChat in 1-1 Video needs "Real World" speed of 256kbps  (it will manage according to Apple at 128kbps).
This Min of 128kbps is the min for Screen Sharing as well.
The Connection Doctor will show you what iChat is using (your Bit rate) NOT what the Internet Speed is measured at.
It will be closer to the Upload Speed you have.
iChat will tend to settle closer to the slower speed of whichever Buddy has the slowest Upload (plus a margin for variances in the ISP's feed/service)
If the variances in the Internet Speed from the ISP varies too much then iChat will have difficulties.
It will drop Audio (As far as you as concerned) as it will start dropping frames to smooth the video out.
For this reason it can pay to go to iChat > Preferences > Video Section and try the Bandwidth Limit at 500kbps  (If for instance you have a 10Mbps Upload a 5% variance can be a whole 500kbps)
With both ends at 500kbps you can be below the Variance factor.
Try 200kbps if there still appear to be problems.
    NOTE:-
iChat's responses are determined by the Internet Speed (Or at least the portion that computer is getting = Bandwidth) and what else the computer is doing.
Depending on the Mac and it's Processor and the apps running at the time iChat may not get a decent use of the Processor.  (It is set to use it "last" a it were so Downloading, Playing Video elsewhere, or setting background tasks (Anit Virus scans, iMovie Rendering) may impinge on free Processor cycles).
Try to eliminate as much as possible.

  • Control a computer without keyboard, mouse and screen

    Hello,
I have installed ARD3 in a MacMini Core Duo and it works perfect.
After that I remove the keyboard, mouse and screen I start the mini just with the power and network cable but I can't log into it. I guess there has to be a way to control the machines in that way.
    Regards,
    2pacy

I think the reason you've received no replies is because nobody understands the question you are asking.
You stated "I have installed ARD3 in a MacMini Core Duo and it works perfect." and then followed it up with "...but I can't log into it."
What did you install on the mini? The agent? The administration software? If you installed the administration software, the agent is not turned on by default. This means that even though you may have been able to run the application, you won't be able to connect to the machine from another computer.
We are happy to help, but we need to understand the question being asked.

  • Keyboard lockout after screen sharing

I was doing some screen sharing from another Mac on my LAN. There's no "disconnect" feature to stop the remote control, so I simply quit the Screen Sharing "application," closed all windows, and logged out of the controlling Mac.
Problem is, at the target Mac, upon every other restart approximately, like this morning after software updating, the keyboard is locked out. Entire keyboard has no effect. Mouse control is okay. The other Mac wasn't touched for days, while this target Mac has been logging in and out just fine. The restart puts me in a state where I cannot type in my login password, and restarting (with mouse) brings me back to the same state, restart after restart. I don't think it has anything to do with the software update, but instead, some kind of residual control from the other Mac that was not fully severed upon quitting.
Even after going back to the other Mac to remotely log into Finder via screen sharing, the keyboard in the target Mac is still like disconnected. Mouse control still okay. Same problem.
    Any solution?

Entire keyboard is locked out EVERY TIME my Mac is restarted! Not just every other time. I mean NOTHING on the keyboard works when locked out -- like it's disconnected, but there's no physical disconnection.
The iffy workaround that gets me back to normal, and only sometimes, is restarting via screen sharing from the remote Mac, then "closing" +Screen Sharing+ (it quits immediately), then quickly logging out of the controlling remote Mac. And THEN I still have to restart the target Mac several times to get lucky! For example, just now restarting five times did not work, but going through the gyration again + restarting twice got me back.
    Remote Mac = 2005 Powerbook 15" G4 running 10.5.5
    Target Mac = 2003 Dual 2GHz PowerMac G5 running 10.5.5
This new phenomenon came about only after I used +Screen Sharing+ on the LAN.
    Help!

  • Mouse pointer/cursor clicking fails while screen sharing in Messages & iChat

Has anyone else had this problem?
My work partner is sharing her screen using iChat on OS 10.6.8 and I'm controlling it with Messages on OS 10.8.3 - usually working on Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.
Every few minutes or so, I lose the ability to click anything on her screen. Audio/video works fine, and my keyboard commands run fine on her computer, I can usually even move the pointer fine but, clicking my mouse or trackpad has no affect on her computer. This is sometimes accompanied by a flashing stalled pointer.
We can usually fix it by having her click her mouse/trackpad a couple times and then I can continue with clicking again from mine.
But, sometimes she's not at the computer so there's no way for me to recover screen share clicking when her computer is unattended.
We both have high speed internet with 10+mb down and 5+mb up speeds.
I've also tried it with bluetooth off and still have the same problem.
Does anyone know how to recover from failed mouse clicking during screen sharing?
    Thanks.

    HI,
I have not see this but at the same time I do not Screen Share as extensively as you seem to describe.
One interpretation I could out on this from what you have written is that not only is your girlfriend getting bored and wondering Off  ( ) but her computer may also be going to sleep.
I have never waited long enough for one of my other computers to go to Sleep during a Screen Share to find out what happens.
    1) does the Share Screen go dark ?
    2) do you lose the connection as it closes the network ?
    3) Is a Screen Saver starting that you can see ?
    4) what does your girlfriend see when this happens ?
I would guess there is something about the VNC part of the iChat Screen Sharing that stops the Shared computer going to sleep.
However I am not sure if a Screen Saver can be active or if you are bumping into the time set for one to start.
I would also be interested in what the other computer is doing in a "behind the scenes" way.
Is something using up the Processor cycles and holding up the Share view as it were ?
I would guess her computer is doing something on it's own such as fetching Mail or similar or even the Time Machine Back up which can be known to cause the computer to be held up for a moment or two.
