Screen shot - how to take?

This past year I had learned how (but can't remember now) how to take a screen shot, and wonder if anybody out there knows what keys i need to press to enable me to take a screen shot of a webpage that i need?

It depends on how you took the screen shot.
If you used the Command-Control-Shift-3 shortcut, the screen shot is on your Clipboard and can be pasted into the message.
If you used the Command-Shift-3 shortcut, the screen shot is a picture file on your Desktop and can be dragged into the message.

Screen shots using command, shift, 4: I used to get pdf files from the screen shot command, now I get PNG files. How do I change the default file type from PNG to PDF? PNGs are a pain.

Also, there are utilities like OnyX that will change the screenshot settings.

Depends on your email client and depends on the forums.
In some email clients you could simply drag the picture into the body of the email. In some you have to add it as an enclosure. Some support both methods (Apple mail does).
Forums differ in the way they handle pictures. In these apple forums you use the little camera in the reply tool bar and it will prompt for the item to be added to the reply. In other kinds of forums you may need to upload the picture to a media hosting site (e.g., ImageShack, Photobucket). They in turn provide you with a url of the upload to incorporate in the forum reply in a specific format.

I do not have Grab.app. When I employ: Shift + Command + 3 to make a screen shot I hear a 'Camera Click'

1st, there are more possibilities than just Shift+Command+3: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201361
2nd, the Grab app is in your Utilities folder.
And, as John has stated, the default location should be your Desktop. If you're using Dropbox, the default location may be your Dropbox folder. However, that can be changed in Dropbox's preferences.

As I can see it is a narrow box with two rows of two characters? Firefox displays that code when it cannot find the corresponding character in any available font. The most common reason to see this is that some sites are now replacing image icons with font characters that Firefox has to download. If you have set Firefox to:
* use only your preferred fonts instead of the page's preferred fonts
* not download fonts (either in about:config or using the NoScript extension)
then you would need to change that in order to see the icons.
First check your font settings here:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Content
Click the Advanced button and make sure there is a check in the box for "Allow pages to choose their own fonts".
If you change that, try reloading the page. Does Firefox load the missing icons?
If that doesn't fix the issue then do the following:
You can check the '''gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled''' pref on the '''about:config''' page (you can go to it by typing about:config in your address bar) and make sure that it is set to true (if necessary double-click the line to toggle its value).
Sometimes it also happens because of the slow connection. Due to slow connection the text which takes less space are somehow downloaded but the image couldn't get downloaded within the connection time frame.
