Screen shot in dvd player

Hi. I'm trying to use a screen shot (command/shift/3) to capture stills when I've got a dvd on freeze frame in DVD Player, but the jpg (I've got it set to save as a jpg on the desktop, and this works perfectly otherwise) just comes out as a grey and white checkerboard. Is it actually possible to do this somehow?
Thanks for any advice proffered.

Could someone please lay out the various work around options for this issue?
ajduguid took care of that already. VLC is free, and when you use it to play back your DVD, you can successfully take a screen shot of the movie whether you use the Mac OS X shortcuts, or the Snapshot command inside VLC itself.

  • Screen shots of DVD movies ?

I like to keep still images of movies I have to a database of mine. With any software it's no
problem but with DVD Player (Mac OSX) I cannot do that, DVD Player does not allow users
to do screen shots while DVD Player is active.
I bought the DVD movie not to mention the fact that its my computer and I'd like to do
whatever I want with it. I fail to comprehend how doing a screen shot (image at 72 dpi...) of
a movie constitutes a major criminal act...
    Please enlighten me......
Is there any way of going around this ?
    Thanks

It's not major, and it will result more in civil action than criminal.
I cannot, based on the terms of use of this forum, tell you how someone using VLC or another movie-playing application could use Movie2Shot or some other kind of screen-grab software to commit these civil violations, so please don't ask me to.

  • Screen shots from DVDs

How can I take a screen shot from commercial DVDs? "Grab" doesn't work. I think something can be done in "terminal", but I don't know what. Can anyone tell me?
    Thanks,

Do you mean you're trying to get a screen shot from a movie playing from a DVD? If so, download the VLC Media Player. It will allow screen grabs during playback.

  • Screen shots from dvd

This is my first time posting with this and I am a relatively new user to macs to I am not too sure what I am doing.
I put a DVD into the side of the computer and clicked the DVD player that popped up. It is not iDVD but I could not find a discussion board for a regular DVD player. When I play the DVD it wokrs fine. I have it paused and I am trying to get a screen shot of the paused DVD screen.
With the screen in full screen I hhit appleshift3. I am doing this trying to get a full screen shot. However, I get the error message that "screen grabs are unavailable during DVD playback. Please quit dvd player first."
Does anyone know what I should do to get a screen shot of the dvd? Any help would really be appreciated!

Your best bet is to ask this question in the iMac forum (Click on this link and then scroll down to where is says something about using DVDs and CDs with your Mac)

PS You can't take a screen shot when the DVD player is on because of copyright rules...however, you can purchase third party software that probably will.

  • How do I take a Screen Capture using DVD Player?

I shot a video of MY own family using MY own video camera, then made a movie using MY own Mac and burned it to MY own DVD-R disk. However, when I try to capture a frame of MY own movie using MY own Mac's DVD Player, it will not let me because the MPAA dictates to Apple.
How can I get a screen capture from MY DVD, please?
    Thank you!

    In Terminal run:
    screencapture -ics
    usage: screencapture [-icmwsWx] [files]
-i capture screen interactively, by selection or window
control key - causes screen shot to go to clipboard
space key - toggle between mouse selection and
    window selection modes
escape key - cancels interactive screen shot
-c force screen capture to go to the clipboard
-m only capture the main monitor, undefined if -i is set
-w only allow window selection mode
-s only allow mouse selection mode
-W start interaction in window selection mode
    -x do not play sounds
-S in window capture mode, capture the screen not the window
-C capture the cursor as well as the screen. only in non-interactive modes
-t<format> image format to create, default is png
files where to save the screen capture, 1 file per screen

  • No screen capture when DVD Player is running?!

I have a DVD of my band playing a show that I want to take quick snaps from so I could post it on MySpace, but some genius at Apple decided you shouldn't be allowed to take screenshots with DVD Player is on.
Do they do this with any other program?
I could type out a copyrighted article or book in Word. Download a copyrighted movie as a .mov file off P2P. Take a screenshot and post it as a PDF or JPG.
Better yet, why don't they block YouTube.com so nobody can view stolen, copyrighted material.
It's my DVD, I made it. It is not copyrighted in any way. Yet for some reason they have taken the liberty to ensure I won't be able to take a snapshot of it, because there might be a chance someone would want to take a JPG of a copywrited movie.
I guess I could always download Handbrake and make it a .mov file, THEN take the screen shot. Or maybe Apple will read this and make it so I can't download that program.

Apple didn't decide to do this. To get the decrypting code for their DVD Player they had to sign a license with the DVD consortium. The movie industry sets the license terms and they don't want ANYTHING copied.
Do they do this with any other program?
No, but there are similar issues. For example, Preview will disable the "Save as PDF" print option for some PDF files (such as filled-in PDF forms), the same as Adobe's Acrobat reader does. They might have a PDF license from Adobe that requires this.

The DVD Player application has no way of telling that you are the copyright holder. They may just assume that the maker of a DVD would have all the source material and could get all the screen-shots needed from that.
There is VLC, but it is probably illegal in the USA. There are other screen-shot programs that don't have restrictions against DVDs. Look on VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Is it possible to go full screen with the DVD player?

I have a 21" IMac.  When trying to play a DVD, I cannot get the movie to go to full screen.  I can expand the screen to a larger size, but there are still a sizable margin left over.  Very annoying and distracting when trying to watch a movie.  I cannot find a full screen button anywhere on the device.  Any assistance you could give me with this problem would be greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Catherine Smith aka doccat5

  • Screen Captures from DVD Player?

I'm using the Apple DVD v3.2, and am wondering if it's possible to catch screen captures (to use for my desk top)....from movies.
I just read the Quicktime question for screen captures, but that didn't work for the DVD player.

  • I can't take screen shots of dvds

i've tried with both 'preview' and 'grab' applications, as well as with every keyboard shortcut to take screen captures from dvds that i'm watching, and every time the capture is blank. does anyone know whats up with this? any help is appreciated. thanks.

There are programs out there that will do what you want. Realize that commercial DVD's are copy protected and Apple programs respect that.

  • HT2499 I ejected ACDs from my Mac Pro DVD player and now there is just a black screen with DVD player and the Apple insignia the bottom right corner. I can't get anything to turn on and shut this down. Got stuck. What do I do?

  • Screenshots of DVD Player

How can I take screenshots of DVD Player? I'd like to convert some frames of our ultrasound video to image files to send to family. I've already been to CNet and Click didn't work and DVD Capture won't work because "Stuffit archives are not supported."

If you can't do it in DVD Player, download free VLC Media Player, play the DVD in that, and take your screen shots. It even has a "Snapshot" command.
Apple DVD Player is known to block Mac OS X screen capture from taking screen shots of DVDs, but it's thought that it was so that people wouldn't screen capture Hollywood movies. I didn't think they would block someone's home video DVD. That's weird.

  • Lining of DVD player

I ejected a DVD from my DVD player and when the disc came out, the rubber lining in the player partially came out too.  I'm not sure what to do now.  The lining is mostly out, but still connected to the player.  The closest Apple store is almost 2 hours away.
Any and all help is much appreciated.  Thank you!!

  • Screen grab from DVD

does anyone know of a shareware or freeware utility that will allow me to take pictures of the DVD screen when using DVD Player 4.6.5? If I use shift-apple-3, I get an error stating screen grabs are not allowed DVD player.

    This should do it.

  • DVD player full screen on external display

I'm looking for a way to play my DVD full screen on my external display while I can work in other apps on the main screen. Preferrably with Apple DVD Player (OS X 10.7 Lion in my case). Any ideas? Hidden settings perhaps?
It's stuff like this makes feel let down by Apple. It's natural feature to want this like for instance when playing DVD on a big screen in front of an audience and prepare something on the main display for viewing.

I know I can do this already with VLC. For some discs that don't play well in VLC I'd prefer DVD Player though.

I have a football game recorded on a DVD+R disc that I was trying to view on my MacBook using DVD Player.  The video comes onto the screen, but immediately freezes, and then disappears.  An error message comes up saying that DVD player unexpectedly quit.  My MacBook operating system is Mac OS X, version 10.5.8.  DVD Player is App version 5.0.3, framework version 5.0.7.
However, the DVD+R works on both my Dad's and my brother's laptops.  My Dad's laptop is an iBook G4 with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.3.9.  The DVD Player is version 4.0.  My brother's laptop is a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.7.2.  The DVD Player is App version 5500.26.1 and framework version 5.5.0.  The DVD+R plays fine on their laptops, but will not play on mine.

    Lao Bo,
yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
    find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
    find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
    cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
    ls /Volumes
Please let me know if you have any trouble with these commands.
