Screen size in design view

Hi, Please help, this is driving me crazy! I had to "repair"
internet explorer in Vista, which seemed to go fine. (reinstall the
software) Dreamweaver kept all my files ertc. but looks very
different now. The font isn't like it used to be and the main thing
is that the Design view of the page is 1/3 larger or more than the
actual page size. Which to me is annoying. After I work on this
large page for a while then check the site it looks tiny! Also at
this large size some text renders differently then it does when you
check it in a browser. I've looked everywhere, can't find a setting
to correct. I want it to appear in the actual size it will appear
live like it did before. Is this Dreamweaver or an IE setting? I
was thinking I.E. setting but all other programs, browsers etc.
render normally. (only the most important one to me is #$%@'d up!

Do you want it larger only while working on it, or do you
want it larger in
the html page, for everybody??

Like I said in my first post, I'm using DW 8.
I want to increase the font for just the DW workspace. In
other words, the font used in the "Design View" which is displaying
my page. So, not for the browser, but for DW workspace only.
Is this in a Preferences setting or is there some other way
to do it?
Nancy, I am at 1600x1200 right now so it would make sense
that everything's so small. If no one can come up with a solution,
I guess I'll have to go down to 1280x1024 or something.

By "a meeting notice", do you mean the Outlook meeting reminder? It's not possible to change the font in Calendar reminders. It's a system font.
If I've misunderstood something, please feel free to let me know.

Ideal Screen Size for Designing application for MAC

Dear All
I want to design a new application for MAC versions, like iMAC, MAC book pro, Mack book Air, and there is is various screen sizes, like
11", 13", 15", 21.5", 27", what is the ideal screen Resolution, is it 2560*1440 or 1920*1080. or what will be the ideal size which will be a clear display in all the machines. I am really confused and I searched and seeked many members info on this but no one is having answer for this.
please help me.

Hi @BDAqua, thanks for the answer, but I am not sure how I can conclude for 1920*1080, for various screens the resoultion changes. I want to know which is the best suitable screen size I need to take while designing my application, am asking purely in perspective of User Interface Design prototype perspective...

Problem with type size in design view CS3

Has anyone experienced type in design view that is just too
small to read? It seems to be inconsisent -- type is speced the
same, but some of it is showing as 1 or 2 pt in my design view. Not
having this problem in DW8. Probably something that I did by
mistake, but I can't seem to "fix" it.

Design View doesn't process code like a brower does. It's primarily used for viewing layout.
Hence the name Design View.
You want to click on Live View while in Design View

CS5.5 Mac crashes every time I change Window Size in Design View

I'm using DW CS5.5 (version 11.5 build 5344) in Lion 10.7.3. I added in a couple of window sizes (in Preferences) that correspond to iPhone and Android phones - 320x480, 480x320, 480x800, 640x960. The 640x960 one works, as does a 592w one that came with Dreamweaver. Any of the other ones, though, cause the app to hang in this one particular file I'm editing. However, in the simple jQuery Mobile starter page DW creates, these resolutions work fine. This appears to be related to some CSS code that I have inside of a CSS media selector:

There is also a corresponding
@media screen and (min-width:481px)
in the CSS.
To test this, I created a window size of 481x320, and that seemed to work completely fine without crashing DW. The 480x320 one crashes DW. I assume that's because it's using the different CSS section.
Pasted below is the CSS code that goes along with the section that seems to cause the crashing:

To further test this out, I commented out all of the code within that block. The window sizes did not cause it to crash then. I then started to add back in pieces of code to see when it began to crash. The crashing seemed limited to the bottom two (#map and .header), although it wasn't consistent. In some situations the window sizes would work and in others they would crash. I didn't test every combo just because it took a lot of time. With both of those in place, though, every one of the 480 or less sizes crashed.
Notable, the #map section is commented out in the HTML, however including that in the CSS still causes intermittent crashing.
I also deleted my cache file to see if that was it, and no luck.

Thanks very much Chris for pointing me in the right direction. I downloaded FontDoctor, and it found one questionable font which I deleted. However CS5 continues to crash when selecting the Design Workspace. So I followed the steps outlined in the Adobe document you linked. When I got to the point of downloading the FontTest.jsx file and ran it, CS5 crashed right away without writing any log file. I turned on app.displayDialogs = DialogModes.YES, and CS5 is crashing with a TypeError: undefined is not an object. So I don't know if this is related to my original problem, or not. Any thoughts on how to proceed to get the FontTest script to run properly? I took all of the normal defaults when I installed CS5 (e.g., didn't select any alternate paths, don't have any add-ons installed, etc.).

Certain images not showing up in Design View

Hi,
I recently switched from Dreamweaver CS5.5 to CS6 with Creative Cloud but now some of my images aren't showing up in Design View. Everything is fine in Live View.

The MORE buttons aren't images. They are in the HTML and appear to be styled with CSS to look like button images.

Unfortunately, Design View is incapable of displaying CSS border-radius, gradients, shadows and other CSS level 3 properties.   That's why we have Live View which behaves more like a real browser.
If you can't live with this, disable CSS in DW by going to View > Style Rendering > untick display styles.
Or, use a Design-Time Style Sheet that contains no CSS level 3 properties.

I just upgraded to Dreamweaver CS3 from MX2004. I edit a web
page and all was OK with MX2004 but with CS3 the font size in
"Design View" is so small it is unreadable and uneditable.
Previewing or publishing the page in IE or FF and the font sizes
are normal.
I have seen others mentioning this problem on other
discussion boards but with no proper resolution.
How can I get "Design View" to display the proper size
without fudging the settings?

This is a code/usage issue. Without seeing your code, we can
only guess
what you have on the page that is making this happen.
CS3 is 2 generations further along in its support of
standards and best
practice usages. As a result it is much more reliably in
rendering of CSS
layouts than DMX2004 was. Along with this increased
reliability and
standards compliance comes a much heavier emphasis on VALID
code. DMX2004
was a bit loose in what it would tolerate. In many cases, it
would ignore
things that CS3 cannot. To know where you stand with this,
try validating
your page. Does it validate?

The iPhone scales web pages assuming a width of 960 pixels. If you put out something that is 240 pixels wide, it will turn into a tiny, unreadable rectangle in the top left.
There are two options to producing a readable page:
* create a display using the full 960 width, with multiple columns. The user can double-tap the columns, which expand to a readable size.
* produce output using a narrower width, and tell the iPhone to use that width. E.g. I produce outputs assuming 240 pixel width, and use
<meta name="viewport" content="width=240">
The phone will scale it so that a width of 240 pixels fills the horizontal width of the screen (which can be different depending upon which way the user is holding the phone). I use 240 because I want my pages to work on other devices, and 240 is a fairly standard width for hand-held devices. My page thus works nicely on a Blackberry as well.

D8 Design view problem or setting

Hi, I think I may have unknowingly adjusted a setting or
preference for the display of design view. The thing is that while
I was working on a form page the design view display changed from
readable to some sort of garbled rendition of the page. I
understand this could be a problem with my code except that I have
the design view issue on lots of pages now…the included Page
Designs(CSS) templates don’t view properly in design view.
Attached is a screen capture, and the code used, of a basic new
html document to which I add a layer…the layer views as a
long narrow rectangular box and supposedly I should be able to
click on it and resize the layer box…but I can’t. In
these situations design view is unusable.
Please help educate me.

Font sizes render too small in DW CS3 design view?

I have recently upgraded to DW CS3 from DW8 (which is still
installed) on my Vista Ultimate system.
For some reason CS3 occasionally renders fonts smaller than
they 'should' appear. This can be replicated using the below code
(I realise this code is not 'best practice' by any measure but it
is the simplest way I could demonstrate the problem). In DW8 design
view it renders exactly as it outputs in IE5, 6, 7, and Firefox
(with default viewing settings) but in DW CS3 the font appears much
smaller! I realise this is probably a standards issue, with CS3
probably sticking to the standards more firmly than the browsers
and DW8 but I need the design view to render as the browser will or
it is no use to me
Please do not say that I should amend my code to be more
'Standards Compliant' as my main use of DW is coding a large
PHP/MySQL invoicing system which is used within a controlled LAN on
IE6 only. It was originally written by someone else and has been
added to and updated by myself. It is very large and certainly
doesn't need rewriting just to render correctly in DW CS3 design
view.

How to add multiple presets to responsive design view without having to resize the screen each time

I want to be able to add multiple screen size presets to the responsive design view capability but don't want to have to resize the screen and add each one individually via the custom preset function.
Have seen that some posts on the internet (http://g-liu.com/blog/2013/08/firefox-rdm-presets/) that say this can be done but cannot find where the config is held in ver 26.0?

You can also do the opposite and create custom settings in the responsive design mode window.
You can hold down the Shift key and drag the borders via the (right border, bottom border, bottom right corner) resize icons to get specific dimensions and give the current custom setting a name to add them as a preset.
This will add the preset to the devtools.responsiveUI.presets pref.

You can paste the current value of the pref in the prompt to see a list of currently defined presets.<br />
You can add a new preset by entering the width,height,name values in the prompt.<br />
Copy the new preset list to the pref.

Already changed in different settings. Here is a screenshot when set to "Original Size".

What are "average" screen sizes, resolutions etc. for viewing websites?

This may be the wrong forum but -
All screen sizes vary, all browser outputs vary, and all individual preferences for browsers are subjective.
Having stated the obvious, can anyone offer guidance on the best 'common denominator' settings/set-up procedure on starting out on a web design so that the best 'average' viewing and reading is achieved? A tough one!
I now have an iMac 24" set high on 1920 x 1200 and my current website looks fine. But now I'm told 800 x 600 is still a fairly common screen resolution worldwide, and viewed on this my pics and texts are elephantine, need scrolling mercilessly, and are.....
just plain ugly!

I think it really depends on your audience. If your audience is ALL, then you'd probably better stick to 640x480 I'm sure there's a few still out there!
If your audience is "recent/new computer users, you could be safe designing for 1024x768. If you just want a good sized swath of users with computers of a decent capability, then some of iWeb's pages (several of the default themes fit well within 800x600) are good for this, leaving plenty of room for dragging items to the desktop and accounting for scroll bars
