Screen sizing

Hi,
I have created a screen for a dialogue transaction I am developing. The top part of the screen is a report display, the bottom part are tabstrips.
Unfortunately for some of the users the size of the tabstrips at the bottom of the screen are very small and they can only see one line of data displayed.
Would anybody have any suggestions as to how to adjust the screen size so the tabstrip par tof the screen is bigger.
when constructing the screen I allocated at least half the screen to the tabstrip but when my user displays the screen it is extermely small.
Many thanks.

Hi,
Welcome to SCN.
This is because of the RESIZE option in Tabstrip.
In SE51, double click on tabstrip and in attributes, uncheck resize options for Horizontal as well as Vertical.

  • Q10 Screen Sizing Problem in Blackberry 10.3

Has anyone else noticed that there seems to be a screen sizing problem in Blackberry 10.3.
When you wake the screeen with a gesture or pull the handset from the Q10 pocket, the screen that it "wakes" up to is enlarged, requiring the user to use the finger gestures to shrink it down to regular size.
Or have I just not mastered 10.3 yet?

    Hi Folks,
    I've sussed this one out!
It is not a problem with the screen resolution or the software update, I had within the accessibility settings the "Magnify Mode" enabled.
Disable this and the screen behaves perfectly..........
    False Alarm. Sorry!
    Revert to Defcon 5...........   :-)

  • How do I view my pics on a screen sized map based on geo tag like I could in iPhoto?

In iPhoto I was able to view an entire Event or album on a map with pins showing where each of the pics was geo tagged.  In Photos now all I can view is a very small 2 inch square map.  Is it possible to view a grouping of pics in Photos but on a large screen size map?  Do I need an additional app to do this?

    You still can (kind of).
If you open the Photos app and you are in Albums, tap Photos. In Photos, pictures are auto-grouped as Events based on location and date. If you see the location listed, that is tappable. Tap it, and that reveals the map where the photos were taken.
The one thing I don't know is how to see all photos by location. Because the most you can zoom out by time is Years, which means you can only see all photos taken by location within a single year, but not all years. I hope there's a way that I just haven't learned yet.

  • Screen sizing or changing bug in iPad mini

Since the update to iOS 7.03 my iPad mini has screen instability. In my reading app it will start to turn back pages without any input. In my bible app it starts turning the menu on and off. in Safari it zomes in and out at multiple web pages. Does anyone have a solution or suggestion other than waiting for the next iOS update. At this point my ipad is almost useless.

I have the same problem, and have for many mounth now, searched for an alternative til iOS Reminders which can sync. to Exchange, but we cannot find one. We use Tasks in Outlook very much.
We have several iPad's with the problem, and we can not solve the problem.
Apple will NOT listen to us, they just say we have to restore the system, but it does not solve the problem!!
    Very frustating.
Now the Microsoft Surface 2 look, like a good alternative, and we will go in that direction. We cannot live with thi issue.
    Apple is NOT for bussiness.

  • Screen sized changed! I accidently hit 'shift' and some other key.

I mistakenly hit a combination of keys and my viewable browser window Shrunk with a black box around it... in the upper left corner, there are now screen size options.
How can I EXIT this mode (and how did i get into it in the first place)
    Thank you!

ok, you're welcome - just realized that the X button will introduced in firefox 22, hopefully it will be more self-explanatory how to get out of this mode for other users with the same issue then...

  • How to exit full screen mode mail message

Inexplicably, when i open messages in Mail, they appear in something like full screen mode.   The message viewer window is not in full screen mode, but if i open any message, the message takes up the whole screen. I can drag the message in order to see other things on the desktop, but i can't adjust the size of the window to the size i want, and see no way of exiting full screen mode. I lookd in Help, but it only shows how to enter Full Screen, not how to exit it.
In the View menu, there is an option to enter full screen.  When i have the full screen sized message open on top, the enter full screen option in the View menu is greyed out.  If i have the normal sized window for the message viewer window on top, the enter full screen is not grayed out and could be selected.  I do not select it since there appears to be no 'exit full screen' option that i can see and i don't want to multiply this problem.
I know this might be a silly question, but if they have an enter full screen option, why wouldn't they also have an exit full screen option?
Or is there an exit full screen option which exists somewhere that i have not been able to find?  I've searched Apple Discussions and Google but so far have not found a way to un-full screen my Mail messages.  This started this morning.
    Can anyone help?
I do not know how it got into full screen mode.  It was not something i did deliberately or knowingly.
i have tried quitting and restarting Mail but the full screen message mode returns.
How can i get my mail messages out of this very annoying and awkward screen hogging mode?
I have only been using Mail since last November when i got a new MBP with Mountain Lion, which meant that for the first time since 1995, i could not use the simple straightforward faultless Eudroa anymore.  So i have had my struggles with Mail.  Trying to get through it.  This is the most recent of various similar issues, inexplicable problems without apparent solutions.  Sort of Microsoft-like.
I will be really grateful for any help.. thanks

Press Control + Command + F on your keyboard to enter or exit full screen mode.

  • Screen resolution switches while using Powerpoint & hyperlinks

    Hi.
I'm using Office 2011 on a Macbook Air. I use PPT to teach and my classrooms have integrated projectors (VGA connection). My PPT runs and displays well. However, I often put hyperlinks in my slides so I can quickly access webpages. When I click on a link from PPT, the PPT slide fades (as it should) and the browser opens, but the screen resolution falls to 800x600 and the web pages are displayed much too big. Any reason why clicking on an hyperlink in PPT switched my screen resolution? And any trick to avoid this?

    DvlFig,
Are you referring to the screen sizing of the actual Remote Desktop Window?  If so,
this page offers this solution to saving your screen settings for future Remote Desktop sessions.
How do I change Remote Desktop Connection settings?
You can change different settings for your remote connection, including the size of the remote PC's desktop, the audio, and the connection speed.
Open Remote Desktop Connection by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping
Search (or if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking
Search), entering mstsc in the search box, and then tapping or clicking
    mstsc.
Enter the name of the PC you want to connect to.
Before connecting, tap or click Show Options, and then make the changes you want on the
    Display, Local Resources, Programs,
    Experience, and Advanced tabs.
If you want to save these settings for future connections, tap or click the
General tab, and then tap or click Save.
    Tap or click Connect.
    Hope this helps!

  • Getting Images to display on entire screen

Hi, I need help with a problem that I'm sure there must be a easy solution to, but I've not been able to figure it out.
When I open a word document or Photoshop file, I'm used to having it open to cover the entire screen on my video monitor on my PC. On my powerbook, it only opens a portion of the size....even when I show it under the "FULL SCREEN" sizing button on view. Can someone tell me how I get documents to display on the full width of my monitor.
I know that there must be a simple setting or fix for this...but I'm struggling to find it. Thanks in advance.

There's no easy solution. It's been said that Apple wants the green button to fit the window to the contents, under the reasoning that on today's larger and wider screens, filling the screen with one document is a waste of space. But that rationalization is faulty, because some screens are still lower resolution where filling the screen would still make sense, and also because the green button is implemented extremely inconsistently, even in Apple's own apps. There are a few applications, like Apple Mail, where clicking the green button actually does fill the screen. But you can never predict which ones will do that.
Photoshop is easier because it has its own full screen mode on the toolbar, or press F.

  • My mac mini is connected to my panasonic LCD and the screen has gone blank

    So here's what I did.
I plugged my old mac mini (10.4.11) to my Panasonic Viera LCD flat screen with a VGA cable. When it loaded up and i logged in i noticed the screen sizing looked odd - as in looked stetched. I then jumped into the display settings and must have clicked on of the options which for some unknown (to me anyay) reason the screen just went blank. I then cannot do anything as I cant see anything. If I turn it off and turn it back on again then its all good as before untill I have logged in and it loads the desktop - then it goes blank again.
    Any ideas?

  • ImageSnapshot taking incomplete image of screen

    Hey all,
I am trying to write a method that will take a screenshot of my flex app.  I've posted the code below.  From what I've seen elsewhere this should be the way to capture everything showing in a flex app in a png image, but when this runs I am only capturing a small piece of the top left of this screen(sized 512x30 pixels).  Is there some part of the setup that I am missing?
    Thanks in advance,
    matt
    var screenshot:ImageSnapshot = ImageSnapshot.captureImage(FlexGlobals.topLevelApplication as IBitmapDrawable, 0, new PNGEncoder, true);
    var file:FileReference = new FileReference();
    file.save(screenshot.data, "chart.png");

Figured it out.  For some reason when the ImageSnapshot.captureImage function is used it uses the default height and width stored in the objects _measuredHeight and _measuredWidth properties instead of using the current size of the screen.  These properties need to be set if you want to take a full screenshot.

  • Is it possible to force a fixed Application to open in a Secondary Monitor?

This is my first time actively using a forum, so forgive me if I'm unclear with my question or if I'm unaware of forum common sense or etiquette.
I've been running a Multi-Monitor system for awhile now at my office. I ran into a few problems when I first set it up, but was able to resolve many issues with many work-arounds. In truth, this is one of the same major problems I was having before.
As it says in my details, I have an iMac with a Wacom Cintiq 21UX via Mini DisplayPort to DVI, and an Apple Cinema Display via Arkview USB Display Adapter. I do a lot of graphical work amongst my many tasks, so the Cintiq is typically my main input device. I have it set in a Portrait position, which I prefer greatly over Landscape.
My problem is that to use many of the graphical applications, Adobe anything, I have to set it as the main monitor. Since Apple doesn't use application containers, at least, not in a way that allows you to drag the main toolbar. This solution, of course, I learned after a lot of struggle. It works and I'm fine with it now, but I've recently been called upon to use Final Cut and Motion for some projects and this problem has again reared its head, but in a different way.
I've programs set up all over my three screens; sized and set to where I like them and are most efficient, and across multiple Spaces. To properly run Final Cut, a resolution of 1280x800 is strongly recommended. Since I'm running Portrait, mine is set to 1200x1600. I didn't think much of Final Cut's initial warning at the time, since any windows caught outside the screen I was certain I could rescue with a trusty Applescript, written to collect all windows to the main screen. Which I discovered was a problem when running Final Cut from a laptop that was dual-monitored, but once you take away the secondary monitor the Final Cut windows remain floating aimlessly out of screen. They were floating off-screen, as I thought, and fixed it with the applescript. While I was working though, I was confused on where the **** the splice tool went. I looked everywhere in the application I could to find it, but it wasn't until I called a friend and he assured me that the tool actually did exist that I remember the teeny-tiny tool panel that would typically reside next to the timeline. The applescript can't pull it for some reason.
So my question, *is there a way in which you can change the display an application starts in?* (bolded for ease of discovery in this long post) what would fixedly open in the main display instead opening to a secondary monitor. Or, as consolation, possibly rescuing that tiny tool panel? Early on I tried keeping a shortcut key set to switch the main monitors back and forth, but found that applications will switch with them, applications I didn't want to switch. Plus, the Wacom Pen has to be re-calibrated when the Cintiq is switched to the secondary monitor, and then, of course, re-calibrated again when it's switched back to the main.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

All my Monitors are set to their native resolutions, 1280x800 is Final Cut's suggested optimal resolution. My Cintiq is a Tablet Monitor, one that allows you to write or draw upon the screen itself, as such, it's set upon an adjustable stand that will let you place the Tablet Monitor upright, semi-flat against the desk, or anywhere in-between, in addition to 360 degree rotation in its flat position. This means that the Tablet Monitor comes with two native resolutions, one for Landscape and one for Portrait. The Cintiq is purposely designed to allow it to be set in a Portrait position, for the comfort of the User. 1200x1600 is just as native for the Cintiq as 1600x1200. Also, my Office Desktop set-up is, God-willing, a permanent set-up; I don't disconnect Monitors, and they are set to Extended Desktop Mode.
My aim was to avoid switching back or forth between resolutions or Mirroring. This will work, yes, but having to do it every time I need to use Final Cut, or any other such program with odd monitor requirements, is a hassle. With all the various windows and applications I have running at any one time, I'll be wasting time moving and resizing windows across multiple Spaces back to where they were every time I need to run Final Cut, and re-calibrating the pen to the new resolution. Which is also a little embarrassing when I need to demo a clip for my bosses and co-workers and I have to spend time, in which I could be explaining things, tiding up my desktops. It would be ideal to have it prepared before they got there, (actually, ideal would be not having to prep it in the first place) but not all meetings are scheduled and planned.
As for windows that get lost in space, that's what the Applescript was for, but apparently that little tool panel, which is wholly more important than it's size suggests, doesn't register as a window and gets left behind.
So my hoped for solution is a way in which to force a Program that would normally load onto the Main Monitor to instead load on to a chosen Secondary Monitor, one that fills the necessary resolution requirements of said Program. I couldn't care less about the Applications need for the Main Toolbar since I run Secondbar anyhow.
This isn't a vital emergency though, I'm just trying to find a solution for an annoyance and to make the whole process more efficient. Oh well, C'est la vie.
Thank you for your reply Dennis.

  • My review: N95 Firmware v20, one day old!

Well - I have flashed the firmware and been using my "new" (for it certainly seems like a new phone) N95 all day now. It has only crashed once (curiously enough clicking on the top right link on the http://mosh.nokia.com page, a small green right-facing arrow). I certainly can't claim that level of stability with my desktop PC... so my one crash is par for the course, and very impressive indeed!
As many people have mentioned, there is a lot more free RAM now. Exactly how much is really immaterial as it is the enhanced capability of the phone which has resulted from this boost that matters. As a pretty exhaustive test I did the following:
Whilst on speaker phone to my business partner he sent me an email to my Hotmail account.
I opened up the messaging app and went to my Windows Live mail box.
I opened the email and downloaded an 85k Word document attachment on it.
The QuickOffice viewer opened the Word file.
Within the Word file was a web link - I needed to look at this and so copied it to the clipboard.
Returning to the menu I opened the browser and navigated to the link from the clipboard. The page was laden with graphics and a tonne of text. I zoomed to 50% and scanned through to read the information I needed.
Leaving the browser open, and just for the hell of it, I went to the menu and launched Widsets which duly connected to my WLAN and loaded up my widgets. I scrolled to the Darla Mack Mobile blog widget and opened it up, selecting the first story within (about the v20 firmware, of course!). This news post had a 70% of screen sized image on the page too.
Throughout all of this I changed screen orientation a number of times using both the slider and the option in the browser's menu. I also had a call blacklist application, as well as the excellent MobiGenie voicemail application running in the background at all times.
Before I closed everything down, I loaded Y-Task's memory module to see how much RAM was free - 6.7M of free RAM!!! Now that's what I'm talking about!!!!
I'd just like to say to anyone anywhere who has ever harboured or proffered the opinion that "it's a phone, it's not meant to do all that" or some variant thereof - what absolute rubbish! This new firmware has made the phone multi-taskable to such an extent that at last, the N95's slogan "it's what computers have become" can at last ring true!!
As for battery usage improvements, the fullness of time will reveal whether it really makes an impact. In the mean time, today, I have tested it as follows:
I have performed a firmware upgrade(!)
I took three backups on PC Suite via content copier
Used USB Mass transfer to copy 370MB of data from my memory card, via the phone
Installed 30 applications to the phone
Restored data to the phone (and subsequently reformatted the phone!) 3 times
Played with the web browser for 50+ mins on WiFi.
Chatted on MSN Messenger for around 30 minutes
Took 8 photos at 5MP each, most with flash
Played around in general with the phone for about 3 hours, on and off
Performed the aforementioned uber-test on the phone
Spoken in total for (according to my log) 2h09m
    Sent 9 text messages
Watched one streaming video from my gallery, lasting 6 mins
My battery has JUST, after all of that, hit the low battery warning. I think that you'll agree that's an impressive performance for the N95. This is all with the phone set to lowest brightness, non 3G mode etc. to conserve maximum power of course, so that extra jolt of power that the N95 8Gb batteries have would still not go amiss... I suspect that I'd have been able to do a lot less if I was using high speed mobile networks for the data tasks I listed above.
The camera is also very much improved, about 3-4 times faster overall. It seems to produce better quality images with finer resolution of individual pixels. I think (?) they have increased focal length on macro shots from 10-40cm to 60cm (I could be wrong there). The update massively reduced shot-to-shot time and the simple addition of the processing image message really improves the process no end, curiously enough! Also, there is funny gray line grid mode (er, what's this acutally for??).
There are numerous tweaks here and there, like new sub-folders in the menus (very handy indeed) and new versions of some apps.
There are some rather glaring omissions however:
Nothing has been done with the accelerometer functions, no auto-rotate or tilt-navigation (a la RotateMe / Nokmote).
Videos and photos are still grouped together in the gallery and the 'albums' feature feels a bit like an afterthought (at the very least I would expect folders or album icon or something to show up in the photo/video stream).
There is still no control over compression of JPEG images from the camera (although this will probably be a minor issue to many).
The slider menu (which Darla Mack quite rightly commented on) from the N81 which allows you to set up how the slider action causes your phone to behave - where is it? This is such an obvious requirement for the N95 and has been the frequent cause of complaints on many forums since the N95's launch
There are a number of applications / software features, for example the multimedia menu, which are already present on other phones which have not been included here. Indeed I believe that some of the core apps from the N95 8GB are more advanced still... given the mess Nokia made of the N95-1 it would seem only courteous to have provided a full set of the latest core apps and menus
There are many other niggles, but I'm going to leave those ones down to personal tastes. That and the fact that I'm a software designer myself, so I'm always likely to think I can see a better way to do it!
To sum up, this firmware update was very much needed and overdue. Nokia's handling of this issue and of it's customers has been appalling. Making people wait for 5 months without word, having superceded a very flawed and expensive phone was not, under any stretch of the imagination, a good way to go about things.
Now that it v20 is here, the N95 flies! It is suddenly reborn and I'm so glad I own it now. It works beautifully and is so stable... it really is a pleasure to use now. I'm glad of my memory card slot and camera lens cover - I wouldn't trade this up for an N95 8gb or anything else I've seen on the market now! (yes that includes you iPhone!! ;P )
My final thought on all of this? Thank Jebus they fixed the infernal keypress bug!!! XD

To be fair, this update addresses nearly all of the concerns that we've had. It specifically addresses the top 2 concerns - memory handling and the poor performance of the camera application, slow load times and processing times.
There are a bunch of other updates as well which are just icing on the cake.
I think through 3rd party programs you can achieve most of what you are trying to do. I'm sure the n95 will recieve yet another update. The attention they have put into updating the phone to support the music store and ngage means that it will recieve additional bug fixes, especially once they begin to get a revenue stream from these new services being launched in december.
I think the n95 if anything has been shown to be a winning device. I believe it will continue to have Nokia's support due to the fact that it is one of the most capable devices in the lineup. I believe the 5 month development time since the last update is due to how comprehensive the overhaul of the firmware has been. Now that version 20 is out, we will see smaller incremental updates. The tough part (overhauling the memory system and operating system, better battery management etc) is over.
I'm really enjoying my device now.

  • Syncing issues, Ovi Suite on Windows 7: Some sugge...

Hi. I was complaining on my twitter about Ovi's last release and someone asked me to report about my experiences here. For most of the issues I did a workaround by myself but I think that I'll not be the only one reporting them and experiencing the same problems, so I'd like to show my thoughts as a suggestion for the next releases.
When I started Ovi Suite after the installation to explore the changes, I had a massive system slowdown and I'm running a Core 2 Quad! Then I realized that Ovi was indexing ALL of my PC musics and photos, including subfolders.
Ok, that's what the software was designed for, the problem is that I have over 30GB of images on my Pictures folder and 22GB on Music. I never checked to immediate syncing when my device is connected neither search my local library, but I just clicked on Music tab and my PC went to a extreme slowdown, NokiaMServer.exe on top CPU usage and crashed. It got worse when I connected my Nokia: It forced to sync the entire 22GB Music files on a 8GB SD! Someone missed a condition there to check if the device has enough space!
I'm not discussing how I sync my music files but I download a lot of 320kb bitrate songs which each one has 11~25MB so as my headphones won't play a louder sound than any 96KB AAC, I convert all that I want to hear on my device and just drag and drop with all of metatags including album covers, works for me. From now I'll put all of my converted files on a specific folder, sync with Ovi and keep everything organized BUT why the hell isn't there a screen asking me to select the default folders for syncing on the first run?
...And the same thing happened to my pictures, just a little bit worse. My system was crashing, Windows Explorer crashed, NokiaMServer went to 25% CPU usage on Task Manager because of thumbnail processing! Really, why the hell would I like to put my entire Pictures folder on my cellphone, especially huge files?
To stop Music indexing, I just selected all songs and deleted them from the Ovi's database/collection without messing with my iTunes library (though some metatags and album covers were corrupted) but for the pictures, deleting 35MB from catalog on my own computer lasted longer than using Bluetooth or the old Nokia Phone Browser to send a 100MB file!
Removing the folders from "folder-watch" or changing the library addresses over the Options should clean Ovi's library/collection but it didn't worked, Ovi kept adding pictures and songs. The only way to stop the ridiculous thumbnail processing (from pictures which I also moved to another folder just in case) was deleting "\AppData\Roaming\Nokia\Intellisync", "\AppData\Local\Nokia\Nokia Data Store" and "\AppData\Roaming\Nokia\Ovi Suite" and seting Ovi's to sync to another folder.
I know that there's a lot of people that don't put that amount of files on Windows default documents folders but I can't understand why this software is so slow for simple commands that other softwares can do better! Even the old PC Suite with Nokia Phone Browser was faster when copying or moving a file to another folder and now it's not even modifying or sending files, it is only reading and indexing!
So, I think that it's not much to ask to Nokia/Ovi developers:
    1. Let users choose the default folders for syncing BEFORE start syncing.
    2. Faster indexing and exclusion for Ovi's library. Don't waste time processing a half-screen-sized thumbnail, just show a 128x128 and if the user wants to see the full-sized picture, make Ovi launch system's default picture viewer/editor. After all, your own pictures don't have DRM...
    3. Nokia Music: Can someone explain me how to lock that damn scroll-bar? Because when I'm exploring my songs suddenly the bar goes back to the top! If you want to make a stylish scroll-bar, fine, but please, make it functional as a normal scroll-bar! Otherwise use system's default!
    4. Again about Nokia Music: Something I thought it was nice was letting users choose what application they wanted to use for syncing songs, because some legacy devices don't work with Nokia Music and transferring files from Nokia Music Manager was faster because you didn't had to change you connection type from PC Suite to Media Device. Fortunately for me, iTunes AAC format works fine to reduce disk usage on my devices, but it would nice if Ovi could convert songs for a smaller file size as Music Manager did.
     5. I'm also experiencing some random nokiaaserver.exe crashes without any Nokia application running at the same time.
That's all. I hope someone read it and understand my point of view.

use this version. it has most of the bugs fixed...
keep in mind that if you are using a win 764bit, there are still issues with crashing.

  • Dual Monitors with GPU and Motherboard not working

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone else could help me out.
So, I decided to hook up an old monitor of mine to my rig today and, lo and behold, the monitor isn't being detected by my computer.
I've already got a monitor running through my GPU (NVidia GTX 960) via DVI.
Currently tried connecting my second (old) monitor to my motherboard with DVI as well, but it isn't being detected.
I went into my bios and forced my integrated graphics on, but when I checked in the device manager, it said my VGA graphics adapter "Cannot start (Error Code 10)"
Also tried updating VGA graphics adapter drivers, but I had the latest drivers already.
I'm not sure if that's related to the issue, but I thought it'd be worth mentioning.
(What's also worth mentioning is that I'm a complete casual when it comes to computer building and such, lol)
Motherboard is a Gigabyte F2A88XM-HD3, supports VGA, DVI and HDMI.
Monitor that I'm trying to connect supports both DVI and VGA.

A lot of the 960's don't have 2 DVI's. However most have an additional HDMI and DisplayPort. I recommend you get an adapter from amazon or something. Just make sure that it will convert HDMI or DP to DVI. Usually amazon products have a good amount
of questions already answered by buyers.
Interesting that they'd go that route, I guess I just assumed since my 760 has two.
I've set up dual monitors using one DVI and one HDMI before, but I ran into issues with screen sizing. Despite having two identical monitors set at the same resolution the mouse would not transmit over to the second monitor at the same height as it was on
the first, so I had to buy an adapter like Joshua suggested.

  • What is optimal behavior for an application when display area is reduced

    Citizens,
    Motivation
I am trying to get a software vendor to improve its window behaviour, and I need some evidence to throw at them so they don't do the old "Its an apple problem" speech when I bust into their office waving my placard.
    _The Problem_
The software product opens windows which are not visible on the current display space because it has saved window locations when the display space was bigger. Some windows can be accessed using Window-Zoom, but others (apparently modal dialog boxes) cannot be accessed without plugging in another screen.
    Objective
I am trying to determine what the best-of-breed solution to this problem is. How do other applications deal with this?
    Theory
There is an expectation that the application should be able to deal with a changing environment. However, I propose that OS X should be able to detect that a window is being displayed in an inaccessible location, and that it should be taking action to make it accessible - e.g by moving the window so a grabbable part of it is visible on the nearest edge of the screen to its requested location.
    Expectation
This will be what they call a "robust" discussion.
    Scenario
The product in question is MYOB Accountedge.
    The problem scenario is this:
    * we have an OS X system with two monitors. They are the same size, but this is not relevant to this problem.
    * On startup, MYOB displays a small "control console" window which has icons for its primary functions.
    * We set the "Save window sizes and locations" option in Accountedge preferences, on the Windows tab page.
    * From the console window, open up the Banking application (which opens a new window), click Spend money (which opens another new window) and move that window to the second monitor.
    * Next, click the possible-values button in the Acct column, which opens a window on the first screen, and move that window to the second screen too. We are moving it because the first screen is a laptop, the second screen is 14", and the operator is a myopic old geezer)
    * Now stop MYOB and remove the second monitor.
    * Restart MYOB and repeat the above - you observe the following:
    - the main window appears on the first screen regardless of where it was when you last closed it down
    - the Spend money window is not visible, but under the Window menu bar option, you can see that it is active.
    - under the Window menu bar option, you can select Zoom, which makes it take up the whole screen. (Some windows will let you resize this down while keeping the display fields useable, others compress the display areas so they are unusable unless it is full-screen sized - this is clearly a bug.)
    - when you click the possible-values button in the Acct# column, nothing appears to happen. The Menu bar Window list is all disabled (i,e. greyed.) The Zoom function is not accessible. I can see the dialog box in Expose but Expose does not seem to offer a way to move it.
There is no way to get to the account list help dialog. It is being displayed outside the visible space and there is no way to access it. As far as I can tell, OS X does not have a keyboard solution for moving dialog boxes, so the only way to move the window so it is visible is to use the mouse, but the mouse cannot get to it.
    So: What should happen?
