Screen Spanning in OS X

I am creating an interface in Flash to control some videos
and animations that run off of a database (The use of the database
driven animation is why I need to control it with flash). It is
2048x768. I need it to span across my two screens when playing at
full screen in Flash Player.
I am using OS X 10.5.2

No because the Windows OS doesn't have the drivers and doesn't recognize the Mini-DVI port.

  • IMac Intel with Parallels, Two Monitors and Screen Spanning

    Hi,
Longtime Mac user forced into using Windows XP for my business. I have an iMac G5 2.1 (iSight) PowerPC. I need two monitors with screen spanning so I'm thinking of getting an iMac Intel, running Bootcamp or Parallels with XP Pro, and using a screen-spanning program.
    1. Can I run Windows XP on the Intel Mac and use screen spanning with a PowerPC iMac?
    2. Is it better to load the screen-spanning software on the XP or Mac system?
    Thanks! Any help appreciated.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
if nobody answers your questions it could also be that nobody has tried it yet.
I haven't tried this setup yet, so forgive me for fishing in muddy water.
Windows XP is capable of using two (or depending on the graphics card even more) monitors for duplicating or spanning.
My own two Intel Macs are showing me this opportunity in the preferences.
Since I never had the need to do so I have never attached a second monitor.
The Intel iMacs and MacPros are capable of attacing second monitors however with the iMacs you a adapter which you can get from Apple.
I would suggest (if possible) to go the nearest Apple Store and try to convince the guys there to do such a setup for you to verify that it works.
    Good Luck

  • Connecting external monitor--not screen span

Lots of people ask about screen spanning and I see a clear answer there...but I am just trying to a find an inexpensive way to monitor my FCP editing projects on a cheap field monitor (or more likely an old television) for color correction purposes. I do own the apple vga adapter but thats it at this point--what should i do next? thanks

If you have an imac G5, you can color correct it for Pro color matching (NOT the 17, just the 20).
Forget the iMac vid. adapter. The VGA output on the iMac is below VESA standards (intentional? I don't know... but the Powermac/Powerbook is good!). If you're using a Trinitron like I am (or plan to) for external color work, the iMac will possibly offer you dim video like the Mac Mini.

  • Screen spanning emac 700 MHz

    Hello all,
I presume this is a quite stupid question, but here goes; is it possible to do screen spanning with a 700 MHz eMac? I've got a Iiyama Vision Mater Pro 455 here - and I'd like to span the screen instead of mirror it completely. That way I can edit much more easily with FCP.
Is there any way to do this through software? (I tried Screen Spanning Doctor, but they've excluded the 700 MHz) Or do I need to upgrade the hardware - if so, what hardware?
    Thanks a bunch everybody!
    eMac 700 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    it doesn't work with a 700 MHz.
So I guess if it isn't possible I need to upgrade the hardware. Is this possible?
Sorry, I missed that you'd already tried it; apologies. But if Screen Spanning Doctor doesn't work, you may be out of luck. It's not possible to upgrade the video chip in your eMac, and I don't think a later-model eMac logic board would fit in your eMac's case, though I can't say for sure. Even if it is possible, it's probably not going to be cost-effective. Logic boards for 1GHz eMacs are going for over $300.00 US on the sites I've found that carry them, and you could probably buy an entire 1Ghz eMac for not much more, particularly if you sell yours and apply the proceed toward the purchase of the later-model unit.

  • Screen Spanning and external monitor

    Hello,
This morning I experimented my iBook and screen spanning.
I got my resolution to 1280X1024, but- The mirrored image sat in the middle of the external screen..I don't know if this is my monitor that is doing this, or if it's some setting I can set on either the laptop or monitor.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you!

Did you use Screen Spanning Doctor?

  • Screen spanning doctor won't work

I am using an extra monitor with my iMac and have had success with screen spanning doctor in the past. Now without reason, it won't work. I've tried resetting the PRAM to no avail. Any ideas?

  • External LCD Display & Screen Spanning

    Hi All
I need to connect an external LCD display to my iMac G5 1st Gen computer.
Is this the right cable -
    http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=6C04E099&nplm=M 8639
Also I have been reading in this forum about a screen spanning hack to the firmware. Sounds painful but what are practical steps to set this up?
    Many thanks in advance
    David

    G'day mate
Thanks for the reply from Oz.
Just had another good look at the back of the external LCD and it has got both VGA and DVI ports on it. Which will get the best results do you think?
Also here is a dump re the graphics card in my iMac -
    GeForce FX 5200:
    Chipset Model: GeForce FX 5200
    Type: Display
    Bus: AGP
    Slot: AGP
    VRAM (Total): 64 MB
    Vendor: nVIDIA (0x10de)
    Device ID: 0x0329
    Revision ID: 0x00b1
    ROM Revision: 2103
    Displays:
    iMac:
    Display Type: LCD
    Resolution: 1440 x 900
    Depth: 32-bit Color
    Built-In: Yes
    Core Image: Supported
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Quartz Extreme: Supported
    Display:
    Status: No display connected
As you can see, the card is a GeForce FX 5200. The web site refers to iMac G5's with GeForce FX 5200 Ultra cards and not the GeForce FX 5200. (My iMac is a Rev A machine).
Do you think this will cause issues? I need to run the iMac and the LCD at a show for my company and I am a bit concerned that I might end up with a Mac with no working display. Is that likely?
    Cheers
    David

  • Screen spanning doc

i'm using screen spanning doctor with my new ibook g4 14iner. its working great, i have it hooked up to a old huge crt monitor and the colors and the quality are amazing, the picture on it is so crisp. but anyway i've read many reviews about how using this patch burns out your logic board because the 32mb video card is only supposed to run 1 image(mirrored or not). i built a little fan thing that keeps the air circulating under the ibook so it stays cool. i always check the cpu temp and its in the 120's which is pretty low. so is my ibook still going to get all messed but from it working to hard, or are most of the problems using the patch from overheating. sorry for such a long message and thanks for your help
    -john

i use that program also with my 19" lcd flat panel i have for extended display - and i always leave my computer on so there have been times it's been hooked to my other display for 24+ hours - and the only part that ever got warm on my iBook is the lower left corner by the trackpad - nothing weird or anything, and cpu temp doesn't get super high either and no fan ever kicking in so i am not concerned with my iBook becoming messed up with it. i also have a new 14" iBook (1.42ghz) and have had no issues - i would say overheating would be the thing to worry about but, like i said, i've had no issues ^_^

  • Install Screen Spanning Doctor with Leopard?

I have an iBook G4 (1.33 GHz PowerPC with 1.5 GB DDR SDRAM) running Leopard. I just bought an external monitor and would like to do screen spanning.
There is one way to install Screen Spanning Doctor that I know will work (boot iBook in Panther off an external Firewire drive, install the hack, then boot it into Leopard off the internal drive), but I don't want to do this if I don't have to.
Has anyone tried to install Screen Spanning Doctor (for the first time) on a machine running Leopard? If so, did it work? Thanks.

Try posting in one of the Leopard forums, probably the Using Leopard forum. You are more likely to have folk familiar with what you are attempting look at your post.

  • Using three monitors with screen spanning and mirror at the same time

I have a mac pro with two graphics cards and I currently have three monitors connected using screen spanning which works fine.
But I would like to change this so the desktop is spanned over two monitors and the third monitor is a mirror of one of the other two.
    Is this possible?

    Thanks very much, perfect!
Only thing is you don't need to press the "?" button. But it seems a little temperamental when you option + click + drag. I found you to have to deselect but clicking anywhere in the window and reselected the window you wish to mirror (which I assume press the "?" does the same thing).
I never thought it was going to be this simple, I was sure I would need to install a third party app or something.
    Thanks again!!!!!!!

    Hey Jake,
I have an imac g3 3500 mh and a slot loading drive. but the crt is geting very old the computer is like 10 years. but how do i screen spam on it.. i know there is a vga port on the back of it and i have a vga screen hooked up to it at the moment but its just that same pic as the other one.
Hmm wasn't aware that any of the 350s had a VGA port.
but would there be a way in the computer to unplug the crt?
There might be a way but it would involve going into the computer and disconnecting the video cable.
If you have the bottom off you could turn the "screen" control down on the flyback. It's the big black thing on top of the PAV on the computers right and those controls can be seen from the bottom right (computer's). I use a chopstick shaved into a flat bladed screwdriver point to do this.

  • Powerpoint full screen/span over two monitors

    Hi,
I have looked around, but I have not been able to find the answer to this question.
I have two monitors where I want powerpoint to display the presentation in full.
As it is now you can only have it display on one monitor (no I don't want or am talking about the presentator view).
But I want it to span over both of them not having to start two powerpoints in windowed and stretching them on each monitor.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    Kind Regards,
    Donn Gwuan

    Hi,
Do you want to show one presentation crossover two monitor at the same time?
If it is, please try the following steps:
Go to Control Panel>All Control Panel Items>Display>Screen Resolution>Multiple display> Extend these displays
Go to the presentation on the Slide Show tab>Select it to show on the Secondary Monitor >Check on Use Presenter View as shown below.
For more detail information, please refer to the following link:

  • 2 Screens / Spanning

    Hi,
I am happy with my 20" iMac, but now I would like to connect my large screen HD TV to my computer. The TV only supports up to 1024x7xx something so when I mirror, it will reduce the resolution of my iMac screen automatically.
I read about the spanning hack, and feel its a good thing, now my question:
I do not need spanning, I would like to send the output e.g. of my DVD Player, QT or DIVX Player to the 2nd screen, which is running in a different resolution. Is that possible ?
Got my point ? I use my computer (slow), and can play a DVD to my 2nd screen where my kids watch it.
    Thanks for any hint,
    Tom

    You need this:
    http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html
I use it with a TV screen via a svideo adapter on my iMac G5 rev B.
this basically makes your Mac "see" a second monitor and you can mouse around on both monitors have windows in either monitor. Heck, you can even put the menu bar on the "other" display...
    Have fun.

  • X11 on a single screen in a dual monitor setup

Same problem as posed here: http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2260647&tstart=0
I was excited when I read the following:
I fiddled with Apple's X11, which I'd installed on my Desktop, to no avail. Nowhere could I disable the screen-spanning behavior. On a hunch, I decided to try out XDarwin, however, and lo and behold --- a checkbox for enabling/disabling Xinerama! In addition, XDarwin seems to be better behaved than Apple's X11 when it comes to correctly sourcing some of my $HOME/.X* configuration files (e.g., I always had to run xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap manually under X11, even after putting the command in my .xinitrc).
I only ever use Xquartz(currently XQuartz 2.6.0 (xorg-server 1.9.3)) which is Xdarwin now. But I do not see the mentioned checkbox for enabling/disabling Xinerama.
Which sounds exactly like what I want to do. I want to have my macbook air(mba) to display full screen Xquartz on external 27" Dell monitor only. On the macbook screen I want to show the OSX desktop with open applications not blacked out by X11.
Any pointers to this checkbox's location would be great. Or any other way to configure this setup would also be good.
I'm not looking for solutions that keep the laptop monitor off in any way as I have seen suggested many times. This is because I want to use it to view state of other OS X apps on the macbook screen while working in full screen X session on the external monitor.
The xnest solution sounds inferior for the same reasons pointed out by Michael C. Lee in the post I mentioned above.

    Hi Andy,
    I really appreciate your help!
I believe you're correct in that I wouldn't be able to start the X server and have it only produce output on one of my monitors, as they are necessarily part of a single "display" (in OS X, at least). Barring that, however, I wanted to be able to at least keep X11 from creating a single screen that spanned both my monitors (the problem with this is that it doesn't recognize the separate monitor geometries, so large chunks of the virtual spanning screen were inaccessible, and it also made dealing with X apps that are none dual-head friendly a pain). On my linux machine, I was able to get this behavior by default (i.e., separate screens named '.0 and .1' under a single X display), and could get monitor spanning only after enabling the Xinerama extension.
Anyway, that basically gave me what I needed, so I'm a happy camper. Just thought I'd post this in the unlikely event that someone else is in the same situation. Oh, and if you're curious, the reason I needed to do this in the first place was because I wanted to run the ratpoison windows manager fullscreen --- great for dealing with ADD!
