Screen starts dark then gets brughter.

Hey all. I've had my iBook for about 3 months and lately I've noticed that my screen is much darker when I boot-up or awake my machine. It only takes about 30 seconds to return to normal.
I usually run my laptop with the brightness down 3 or 4 notches to save the life of the screen but now I find I need it all the way up for the first little while.
So is this normal? It's not a big deal and if it doesn't get any worse then I'm okay with that. But could it be a sign of something disasterous?

Its perfectly normal. I've never owned a laptop that reached max brightness isntantly after waking up from sleep.

Try a Reset...
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.

hi... my screen went dark, then appeared again in raw coloured pixels. able to use cursor and programs. Restarted and problem disappeared. But happened twice more.
Appears to be instable.

MacBook pro early 2008 screen starts flickering, then freezes. Force shutdown then freezes at grey screen start up. HELP!

My computer screen started to flicker. Then the mouse pointer will freeze while the screen continues to flicker, not allowing me to do anything except force shut down with power button. When starting up, the rotating circle freezes up on the gray screen. I try starting up from the Snow Leopard CD and either I get a error message about something wrong with the power supply and needing a force shut down or screen flickers and mouse pointer freezes again.

I ended up taking it to an Apple store for diagnostic tests. They tried what I did (safe boot, start from disk utility, hardware checks), and it didn’t work. They tried to start-up from an external hard drive and when that didn’t work the employee recommended I leave it for more testing. His initial guess was the hard drive was bad. I called a week later for a status update and they said the logic board was the problem and they were going to fix it free of charge. Given that my Apple Care expired two months prior and otherwise would’ve charged me over $500 to fix, I didn’t ask questions about the problem. So far my computer is working well, though when I try to load downloaded music from my iPhone to iTunes, it’s recognized as a new computer and I have to reauthorize it to my iTunes account.

Several times over the last few days while on safari my iPad spontaneously shuts off screen goes dark then goes to home screen what's going on and how do I fix it when I look at settings diagnostics it says that there is low memory ?

Safari crashes several times while on pinterest, screen goes black then goes to home screen when I start safari again it keeps doing the same thing. The memory that is low is the processor memory, not the overall storage space. Next time, before you go to that site, double tap the home button to see the task bar. You will see the list of apps siting in the recently used list. Most of them are not doing anything, but some of them are using up memory. Touch and hold any one of them until they jiggle, then close them all off by touching the minus sign.
Do that every so often to help the pad use it's memory wisely.
Some apps, and browser pages use a lot of memory, and do not give it back easily, causing what sis happening to you.
You can also get a similar result by rebooting. Press and hold the home and sleep buttons until the apple logo appears, ignore the red slider.

HT1349 My Apple MacBook Pro won't start up. It is stuck on grey screen and I reset all of the stuff. It still won't work also half the screen goes dark then you have to shake it till it goes back on. Please help.

Have you tried booting it from a DVD? If so and you find the same result, then its probably a hardware issue.

Black screen during upgrade, then getting no graphics

I have a laptop with arch. I have gnome installed but I use GDM to start i3wm.
When I upgraded today (with pacman -Syu) the screen went black mid-upgrade. Then it briefly flashed now and then, showing the desktop. It also didn't respond to anything, including trying to change to a text based terminal. I gave it some minutes and then force-switched it off and restarted. Then when booting, the boot loading text stops at "Started User Manager for UID 120" and then it's stuck there. I can however change to a text based terminal.
What I tried:
I tried starting x with startx in a text based terminal. I got X started with the basic windows. Then I tried using journalctl to display the info about gdm, and got this:
Starting GNOME display manager...
Started GNOME display manager.
Child process -325 was already dead.
Child process 317 was already dead.
Unable to kill session worker process
Child process -<another PID> was already dead.
Child process <another PID> was already dead.
---This repeats every minute with different PIDs constantly---
Any ideas on how to debug/fix?

What is the output of:
grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log
It would probably be a good idea to use `sprunge` or similar to upload the entire contents of that log and post the link here.

IPOD starts syncing then gets a variety of errors

when i plug my ipod in and try and sync it starts then stops with a variety of error messages ive had everything from 'the disk cannot be read' to 'an unknow error has occurred' etc. this has only been happening since i uploaded some files to transfer onto a friends laptop. there was problems reading the pod on the laptop. anyone help, please. im throughly sickened!

I just bought my 30gb Ipod video last week. The first time I sync-ed with my Macbook, a variety of error messages were displayed after several attempts at restoring.
"An unknown error has occured. (Error 1418)."
"An unknown error has occured. (Error 1417)."
"An unknown error has occured. (Error 1453)."
I did the 5Rs and it worked fine. After a day, I was able to rip more audio CDs into my Macbook. When I sync-ed again, the following error message was displayed:
"Attempting to copy to the disk "iPod" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
iTunes also syncs all songs everytime I sync. I tried the 5Rs again and removed the Photo cache, to no avail.
I have checked with out local reseller about replacement and it will take 21 working days. It's a bit too long for me. Is there any way for my iPod video to work properly?

It is a newer MacBook, just over 1 year. It is well cared for, hasn't been dropped, etc. I don't want to pay for expensive repairs for such a new computer, and I certainly can't afford a new one!
I've tried updating my system like the Support page suggested, but no improvement. The problem started just the other day, and is progressively getting worse.
.... as I typed this, it did it again. Only, this time it did not flicker and shake, but got 'pixelated' (pixels came up checkered-like darkened and lightened). It did this for about 2 minutes and then stopped after I did not touch the computer.... Now it is flickering... HELP!

Top 1/3 of screen darker then the rest.. 23" HD

A few weeks ago the top 1/3 of screen got darker then the rest.. It seemed to go in and out from 100% to dark for about a week and now it is just darker. The monitor is still usable but it gives me a head ache after a while of working.
Can this be repaired by apple? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..

Happened to me and I thought it also was the upper cfl tube, it got progressively darker by the week. Instead of changing the cfl tube, I swapped the inverter board from an exact model that was used for parts. I figured that an inverter change was much easier to do and it was and the problem was solved, works like new. Sometimes it is not always the tubes that go bad, the inverter board is divided into 2 sections, one for the lower tube and one for the upper one that supply the tubes the voltage. If voltage is weak, so are the tubes. If the power button on the monitor flashes it is almost a sure sign of inverter problem. Tubes and inverter are really not that difficult to change, just the right size allen keys and a philips screwdriver and a little patience. Check out moniserv.com for schematics and parts. They also have some very useful suggestions.

Help! On my new iPhone 4S, I can see all of my music and vidoes that I downloaded from itunes that I had previously purchased on my iPhone 4, BUT I can not play any of the songs! When I hit "play" from my 'albums' and 'playlist' or 'songs' it looks like it is going to play the song when the song screen comes up showing the album but then the screen starts flipping from album to album or song to song randomly. Then after flipping thru anywhere from 10-15 songs, it stops and goes back the previous page showing my list of music.... I have synched my phone, restored it and downloaded all of my music and videos. The only things I can get to play from my iPod on my iPhone 4S is my videos, no music. Can anyone help me? I have been trying to figure it out for days and I am a bit frustrated. Thanks in advance for any help I may receive.

It occurs with both ripped songs and ITMS songs, but not always the same songs. Just this morning, I had a song skip ahead, then put down the ipod for a few mintues, came back and that same song did not skip ahead at all. I've been on a stretch now of about 20 songs with no skipping whatsoever. Hmmmmmm....
I've used all the five "R"'s multiple times to no avail. It just seems so random, it frustrates me.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Ifou don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
