" Screen Tearing" with EVGA GTX 970

Hi everyone,
when watching clips with movement or moving windows on windows somewhere else I get the "tearing effect" on my monitor. Meaning I see vertical lines while movement on my monitors, mainly in the middle. I do not see this line in PP CC 2014.
I am running the following hardware:
EVGA GTX 970 FTW Acx 2.0
Monitor 1: EIZO FS 2333, 60 Hz, HDMI
Monitor 2: quite old Acer on 1.600 x 1200, 60 Hz, DVI
Windows 7 professional 64 bit
latest Nvidia drivers
latest version of PP CC 2014
latest version of EVGA Precision X 16
I've heard about a view possible solution:
- activation V-Sync on Nvidia drivers (problem is monitor and graphic card are waiting for each other, monitor Hz will be downgraded)
- lowering Hz value under windows for monitors
- updating drivers (I did)
- Installing latest directX drivers? Do I need this?
I am wondering if the GTX 970 is to fast my old Acer monitor? Maybe the EIZO can handle 60 Hz, the Acer not? Can that be a problem?
My GTX is slightly overclocked, nevertheless that problem has been there before OC.
Are there any windows setting, windows service settings, to fix this? Any specific BIOS or Nvidia settings required?
I'd really appreciate your help and experience.
Best,
Alex

Thx for reply.
I've tried all options. Having Vsync "adaptive" / on does slight help but not at all. Also did update DirectX, no success.
My GTX 970 come up with good results, can it still be a defect? Both monitors can manage 60 Hz, so that can't be a problem.
I will reinstall windows on the weekend, and see it that helps.

Hi!
I've tried to set Raytrace 3D in AE CC 2014 with GeForce GTX 970 and i get this error
Any fix soon?

It's better to skip the ray-traced renderer altogether since the AE team is no longer working on developing it.

Seriously, Cinema 4D is free with AE! Go forth and create!

• Compositing causes screen tearing with Nvidia, is ATI a better choice?

So far, every Nvidia card I've used with Ubuntu, Debian and Arch has had intolerable screen tearing with a compositing manager running, while watching any video. I've installed the proprietary driver from Nvidia on a Debian machine but the screen tearing is still there. The cards I've been using are an 8600GT and a 9600GT.
I've tried xcompmgr, Xfce compositing and Gnome compositing all of which seem to cause the same symptoms.
It seems like I read somewhere that there's a problem with the Nvidia compositing extension or something like that...
Two questions...
1) Do ATI cards tear video with compositing enabled? (I'm hoping they don't...)
2) Is there any way to cure screen tearing with an nvidia card and compositing enabled?

ATI Radeon 4670 user here, KDE w/ Arch Linux. While I can't speak for other video cards, this particular card runs absolutely fine using xf86-video-ati and some xorg.conf tweaks. Though I don't play many games, I can tell you Alice runs fine via WINE. As far as OpenGL goes, the screen savers that are supposedly OpenGL work fine, too.
The only performance difference between this card and the 7600GS I was using beforehand that I can tell (minus the speed improvement) is being forced to view videos using the Xvideo driver in KMPlayer. If I view said videos via OpenGL, they display, however widgets on the desktop tend to offer display glitches while the video is ongoing.
I understand there's a good deal of reason for the commenting, and yes, ATI drivers aren't nearly up to par with their Nvidia counterparts, however this doesn't mean some folks aren't having success with the available driver(s) using little effort on their parts. As an ATI user, it'd be nice to see some fellow reports of success with ATI drivers, open source or not.

• Z77a-G41 with EVGA GTX 650 1GB compatible problems.

Z77A-G41
I7-3770k
8GB crucial ballistix @ 1600MHz
EVGA GTX 650 1GB
PC does boot in safe mode and if the videocard drivers aren't installed yet.
After installing the videocard drivers the PC still boots but screen freezes on the Microsoft logo or I'll just get "no signal" status from the monitor.
I know that the PC is still running cause i can hear the Windows start up and shutdown sounds after using Soft-off power button.
I switched the video card with my other PC, a XFX AMD HD6870 1GB. of course uninstalled the previous drivers and installed the new latest drivers from the official websites.
The EVGA 650 is running on my PC:( Z77A-G45 I5-3450 8GB corsair ) just fine and the XFX HD6870 is running fine on the Z77a-G41, even after 20 reboots.
I even installed my SSD drive in the PC with the problem to see if its maybe the OS.
Also installed my memory in that PC. and Switched the 6pins power cable because i couldn't think of anything else anymore.
I tested with bios version 2.1 and 2.9 .
What to do now ?

It didn't work, And i get the feeling its getting more unstable everytime i boot, So it looks like a hardware piece is dying slowly.
Specially since i installed the PC 1 month ago and didn't had any problems. but the PC started to become more and more unstable.
So this should be Hardware problem, Not driver/firmware/bios problem.
I'll go to my shop to make a RMA.
Kind regards,
Bastian.

• MSI z68A-GD80 (g3) "B2" error with ned gtx 970

Hey.
Hardware info:
MSI z68A-GD80 (g3) - Bios version. V18.8
Intel i5 2500k
4x4GB kingston hyperX 1600mhz
MSI 970 gaming g4
PSU : Seasonic SS-500GB
My problem is that when I'm trying to install the new GPU i get the error "b2" when i boot. If i chance back to my old gpu (560 ti) or the gpu on the CPU there is no problem. Also i have tested the gtx 970 in another PC and it works.
After some reseach i found out that i need a bios update. I have tried this but with no luck, cant upgrade bios. I have use "MSI Forum HQ USB Flashing" tools with bios from MSI hp (I choose the (g3) bios) . I can get the bios on the USP stick but when I'm trying to install the new bios i got the error "Bios corruption detected !!" and stopped. I don't know what to do now, i hope that you can help me
The usp stick is fat32

I had the exact same problem as the original poster - same motherboard, same old graphics card (560ti) and same new graphics card (970 gaming) and got the same B2 error code and the PC not going beyond that.
I flashed the bios and that fixed the problem - the exact version I used was on this page:
Ok, this forum isn't allowing me to post a link to it, but just go to the official page for the motherboard on MSI's website - then click on Support and Service Location, which should open up the list of BIOS upgrades...
The top one as of writing this is version 19.2
To do the flashing of the BIOS you must load the downloaded exe file onto a flash drive and run it from there. Don't worry if it seems like your PC is hanging, it just takes a while (while still in Windows). It then reboots and will finish up flashing the BIOS (you'll see a red bar with the warning on a black background with white text).
After doing that, my GTX970 GAMING works like an absolute charm! I can now finally enjoy Minecraft like it was meant to be played haha (kidding, I played GTA 5 the whole weekend with EVERYTHING to the absolute MAX!)
Hope this helps if you are experiencing this extremely annoying error.

• Screen Tearing With Radeon HD 6950

I am having problems watching DVDs. Every DVD I try to watch has a LOT of screen tearing.
I have tried mplayer, VLC, xine, and totem with the same results for all of them. Currenty, I am using the catalyst drivers supplied by AMD. Enabling v-sync and tear free desktop in the catalyst control center causes the tearing to stop, but then I only get about 10 to 15 frames of video a second. Finally, I installed xvba and tried to use vaapi, but the colors are extremely distorted (the image is either all green or all purple).
Has anyone encountered this problem? Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong so I can watch a DVD in arch linux and not boot in Windows?

Just use OpenGL as the video output driver. I use "mplayer -vo gl". For me this fixes all tearing in videos and it doesn't seem to skip any frames.

• Is the IdeaCentre K450 compatible with the GTX 970?

By comptabile I mean, of course, will the graphics card fit in the board? Specifically I have the K450, Machine type: 10120, Config number: 57323871.
Or to make it simpler, I have this board: ( http://flash.newegg.com/Product/N82E16883266696?icid=SE_83-266-696 )
Note that's not my exact PC, but the board seems to be exactly the one I have, only some differences (mine came with 12GB instead of 8GB RAM, for example, etc.)
My main concern being the size of the GeForce GTX 970. The lenght shouldn't be an issue since there's plenty of space below the drive bays, but because it's dual width I'm concerned if the card will be in conflict with where the heat sink down there is located. Essentially if the card passes over it, that's fine, but I'm not sure if that heat sink will actually obstruct the card and not allow it to fit in place, That link I posted has images of the mother board and said heat sink. I intend to upgrade the PSU as well (due to the GPU's requirements), but I'm unsure if this card will even fit in there?

Hi random34,
Did you uninstall previous graphics drivers prior to booting your PC with the GTX card?
This card requires one 8 pin and one 6 pin connector. Check your power connections.
Try booting in safe mode. Tap F8 repeatedly at boot. Uninstall incorrect drivers if applicable. Install Nvidia graphics drivers.
Some newer graphics cards require UEFI BIOS.

• Sudden video crashes/black screen flashing with MSI GTX 680 + MSI GT 640 (PhysX)

I've been running an MSI GTX 680 Lightning + MSI GT 640 (dedicated PhysX) setup since last September with excellent results. Most of my Steam games would crash in less than 10-15 minutes before I added the 640.
Just this week, however, I've noticed a new and different problem. While playing several different games, the monitor randomly flashes black, then the game stutters and finally my whole system crashes. I've never seen this before. The only thing that seems to correct the problem is to scale back the resolution from 2560x1600 to 1920x1200 or even 1280x800.
The problem seems to be getting worse. Now, while doing anything on my PC, the system freezes briefly, the screen rapidly goes black, then turns back on and system unfreezes. This happens 3-5 times in a cycle then stops. The cycle repeats every few minutes and happened twice while typing this post.
I've got the latest graphics and other component drivers installed. All diagnostics say the video cards are working properly, but these problems persist.
Are these indications of failing video cards? Any/all suggestions appreciated.
My system specs: MSI GTX 680 Lightning 2GB, MSI GT 640 1GB (dedicated PhysX), i5-2500K, Asus P8Z77-V, Coolermaster V8, 16GB Corsair Vengeance 1600, 4TB storage, Corsair HX1000, Dell 3008WFP, Windows 8 Pro 64-bit.

First of all remove the GT640 so we can check if the issue is solely related to the GTX680. Then monitor temps in load and idle using Afterburner (>>How to use MSI Afterburner<<)
If problem presists when not using the GT640 remove current drivers in safe mode using >>Driver Fusion<< and install latest MSI driver (http://www.msi.com/product/vga/N680GTX-Lightning.html#/?div=Driver&os=All). Yes, I know that driver is older than Nvidia one but it is a surely working one with the special MSI design and features.

if you disable gen3 in bios setup, does the it works fine when its installed in the pci-e 3.0 port?

It says V10.3, 3/28/2013. I'll have to flash and get back to you afterwards. System ran about 2 hours at idle, I looked at it, rebooted it to get into BIOS, rebooted again to get the revision confirmed on POST, and then I shut it down. After the fan...

• Very Initial results PPBM8 (CC 2014) with GTX 970 SC

Well this has been an interesting evening with my new EVGA GTX 970 SC with 4 GB. I got over $50 off on an open box unit so I could not resist!
My single GPU benchmark from PPBM using MPEG2-DVD with Hardware Acceleration scores have been the same as my GTX 770 SC.
I hope that GPU-Z is reporting this new GPU properly. There may be some confusion here with a brand new board.
I downloaded the latest EVGA overclocking tool Precision 16 and tried to adjust the memory speed as I have done dozens of times and I could not get any changes showing in GPU-Z.
I do like the it has HTML 2.0 (4K monitor compatibility).
I do like the lower power dissipation.
I do like the slight lower price. (4 GB GTX 770 to 4 GB GTX 970).
In the next few days I hope to get the answers somehow on the overclocking of the memory and compatibility with GPU-Z
Testing with Premiere 8.0.1.21

Thanks much Eric, now I hope I can get our results page updated. Apparently with the new Maxwell's you cannot change the real memory speed. I have sent more time with EVGA and no one can explain why. It can appear to be set differently but it does not change the results like it has in the other previous cards.
I will install my GTX 770 with the GTX 970 to see how they play.

25-75% depending on application (game).

• MSI GTX 970 not being detected on first PCI-E 3.0 slot of MSI Gaming 5 motherboa

Hi guys.
So I recently got myself a new build and some of the components include a MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G GPU and a MSI Gaming 5 mobo. When installing the GPU to the motherboard I found that for some reason nothing was being displayed on the screen. The screen wouldn't display a no signal message but it would stay black when I booted the PC up. However, when I plugged the GPU into the 2nd PCI-E 3.0 slot it would work and display on the screen. I read on a Tom's Hardware thread of someone with a similar problem and it was recommended to him to check his CPU for bent pins and he later confirmed that was the problem. I have tried the same, but as far as I can tell all of the pins were in their natural state and couldn't find any bent ones.
But I also discovered something else which really started to confuse me... When I plug in my old GPU (a Gigabyte GTX 560 Ti) into the first PCI-E 3.0 slot, it would work normally?! Why would it work fine with my GTX 560 but not my GTX 970?? I have tried everything. Even stripping the pc down to the most basic parts on a wooden surface and tested everything but it's still the same problem. I have also made sure that the display setting in the BIOS is set to PEG, but it would still not display anything when the GTX 970 is in the first slot, but if I plug the HDMI cable directly into my motherboard, even with the GTX 970 installed on the first slot, it would display normally. Also, in my BIOS it doesn't even detect anything being in the first PCI-E 3.0 slot in the Board Explorer menu. But when I installed it in the 2nd PCI-E 3.0 slot the Board Explorer menu would recognize it, but would say it's running at x8 and not x16. Should I be worried about this?
My full setup:
MSI Gaming 5 Motherboard
Intel i7 4790K
MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G
Kingston HyperX 1333Mhz 8Gb (2x4Gb)
Corsair RM 750 PSU
Corsair H80i CPU cooler
Any advice from you guys on what to do or what the problem could be would be greatly appreciated!

remove power cord from the PSU and do >>Clear CMOS Guide<<
also reseat the card into PCI-E slot 1 and make sure its fill very well into the slot

• Can't get GTX 970 to render - it's still using the CPU

Hello guys.
I'm using trial of Premiere Pro CC 2014 on Windows 8.1 x64.
Decided to try out my new machine - i5-4690K, EVGA GTX 970 FTW, 16GB DDR3 2400 Mhz, Samsung 850 Pro.
So I have this test video 1080p 60FPS 1min 2s short which I'm exporting to H.264 same as source but lower bitrate.
With the software renderer it takes 3min20s.
I wanted to try out my GTX 970, so I ran the GPUSniffer and added "GeForce GTX 970" into my "cuda_supported_cards.txt". Restarted the machine, made new Project, selected GPU rendering in the Project Settings and gave it a go.
It took exactly 3min20s as before and checking in CPUID HWMonitor GPU usage was 0 and CPU was running full speed. So certainly not GPU Accelerated.
I'm using latest drivers, which is 350.12.
Any ideas what should I do now?
Thank you very much for your time.

Where does the video card fit in?
The video card and hardware MPE is not the holy grail. It helps in some circumstances to improve performance and rather significantly, but in other instances it does not help at all, as is indicated in the link above. People often think that installing a super fast video card will reduce export times by a significant amount of time. That is not true. It only helps in a limited number of situations. Keep in mind that:
Encoding to an export format is done by the CPU, not the GPU. No performance gain from a video card.
Frame rate changes, frame blending is done by a suitable video card, for instance exporting to 24P from 29.97i or 60P. Here there is a clear performance gain.
Scaling is also helped by hardware MPE, for instance going from 4K to HD or from HD to SD. Again a clear performance gain.
Rendering for preview is helped by the video card only for accelerated effects.
If any of the last three points are a major part of your workflow, then a good video card will speed up these parts of the editing by up to 15 times on average over software MPE.
