Screen too bright at night

I've just bought a 24" iMac and find the screen far too bright in the evening and at night when I often work. I have the contrast and brightness down to the lowest settings in System Preferences, but the screen remains so dazzling that it hurts the eyes. On my MacBook Pro I can slide the brightness down to black if I want, so why not the iMac - or have I missed something?
All thoughts about solving this problem - or suggestions for software to reduce the brightness - greatly appreciated.

I would like to thank Lenn and Dennis for your suggestions, all of which I have now tried. I've taken so long to respond because I wanted to wait 24 hours - and another night - to see if one is better than another. Changing the screen profile made a very small difference, and at first Brightness seemed to do a better job, but the overall winner in terms of flexibility is undoubtedly Shades, which I'm using right now.
Thanks again, both of you!

The white background screen for messages & emails are entirely too bright & bland.   Will there be an update where the user can select their own color background for emails & text messages?

I agree with you, the background for e-mails and the calendar are too bright.  PLEASE APPLE, give us an update to make the calendar more useable.  I absolutely hate it.

  • GP70 screen too bright

Hi, I just bought a GP70 2PE with Core i7 and so far I quite like it. I installed Windows 7 x64 instead of the default Windows 8.
However, I have one problem with it - the screen is very bright - even on the lowest setting, the screen is brighter than my old laptop (a 9 year old Acer 5020) on the highest setting. While a bright screen will be great for outdoors use (or in other brightly lit places), using the laptop in a dark place hurts my eyes (while the old laptop and the CRT monitor of my main PC do not).
Opening the graphics control panel and setting brightness.contrast to minimum helps a bit but makes the image look bad. Is thee a way to reduce the backlight brightness (without opening the laptop and modding the backlight circuit, which I could do, but do not want to lose the warranty)?

  • Is The 24" iMac Screen Too Bright For Longevity ?

I have just been in an Apple Store testing both the 20" and 24".
I had heard that the 24" screen was brighter but assumed that, like so many claims, it would only be a marginal difference.
I was amazed to see that it was considerably brighter, making the 20" look extremely dull by comparison.
I checked and found that both machines were on maximum brightness. Even set to minimum, the 24" seemed brighter.
I don't know about LCDs but with "normal" electric bulbs, over-running them can give a brilliant but brief life.
Are these new monitors naturally bright or are they being over-run and likely to burn out just after the warranty expires?
    Ian.

I realise we are dealing with a different technology.
Does that mean that the brightness will have no detrimental effect on longevity?

  • B510 - screen too bright ?

I'm having a strange problem with my B510. It seems to me that the screen is way to bright, even with the brightness level at its lowest. I use this system mainly for work. When I work with eg. my stock charts, which are plotted on black background the picture quality is perfect. But when I browse the websites (especially the ones with with background) and with the 1920x1080 resolution leaving plenty of white margin space in the browser - I feel as if I was starring straight into the sun!
    So my 2 questions are:
    1. Did any of you experience this problem or is it more of my personal preference ?
    2. Is there any way to decrease the brightness of the screen ? I have switched off the dynamic brightness system and used the front cover button to set the brightness at the minimum but the lamp at the back of the screen is still glowing like crazy. I tried to change some settings in the ATI control panel but there were not to many advanced options.
    Any help ?
    Best Regards.

  • 24" imac screen too bright!!!

i Turned down the brightness as low as it can go, but it is still the brightess thing i ever saw! and it is hurting my eyes. Is there anything else i can do to stop that bright light from killing my eyes?

Thank you! I got a 24" iMac 2 wks ago and have been suffering eye, neck and back strain ever since. I'll try the above suggestions for the brightness. But the inability to lower the monitor to an ergonomically correct position is a serious oversight on Apple's part. I'm debating taking a saw to my very nice computer desk.

  • Screen too bright!

    Same as many.
I downgraded my BIOS but to no avail?
How do I downgrade the EC or get a refund? Thanks

It would seem that the "BIOS upgrade" is diddling something somewhere, since more than one person is reporting that downgrades do not restore the old lower minimum brightness setting. It could be that the BIOS installer is doing something more than just a simple BIOS replacement, that is, it's setting some unknown setting that is not restored with a downgrade to the old BIOS. Perhaps a registry setting? Would be nice if that's it and we could determine where it is, cause then this problem is easy to fix. However, I doubt this is the case, because I've searched the registry for a setiing for the minimum brightness and I can't find it. I've searched the internet for info on a registry setting and can't find it.
Also, FWIW, I've got a desktop app I wrote that I added a slider to that changes the brightness, and what I discovered is that the lower brightness settings are all the same. In other words, as you go down in settings, the minimum brightness is achieved at, say, 20, and then 19,18,17....... 0 are all the same brightness. It's floored at a non-zero setting, which seems patently wrong.
Padgett: Are you saying that the Intel Platform install after the BIOS upgrade restored your minimum brightness setting to the older lower value?

  • PRINTER DISPLAY SCREEN ALMOST COMPLETELY WHITE (TOO BRIGHT/FADED/?)

I cannot read the images on my printer’s display (Product HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-all-in-one printer - N911a). The images are there, but barely discernible. I can't put my finger on whether the screen is too bright or too faint, or the images are too light. The display is NOT blank or black (and the HP Troubleshooting solutions to correct those problems have not corrected my problem, ie Hard Power Reset, updated firmware, and adjusted brightness setting), just too bright or too faint. Even with the screen brightness on the darkest setting, I still cannot make out the images. Interestingly enough, at the end of the day yesterday, the screen self-corrected somehow, and was back to a readable display. However, it reverted back to the problem overnight.

    Hi busymom51 & otcheryl,
I understand that your issue is not the same as the title of the troubleshooting guide listed above: The Touchscreen Does Not Respond, however the troubleshooting steps are the recommended steps to attempt the resolution. If you followed the steps and the issue is not resolved, try again to update the firmware.
If your 8600 is the N911a, try this firmware update: HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911a Firmware. The printer will need to be connected to a Windows computer via USB for the firmware update.
If the 8600 is the N911g or N911n, use this update: HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911g_n Firmware. The printer will need to be connected to a Windows computer via USB for the firmware update.
If the firmware update does not help the dim display, contacting HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you would be the best option.

  • Screen Contrast Too Bright - Changed Itself

My mother-in-laws AIO computer monitor is too bright. The contrast changed automatically. No updates were done. I ran diagnostics, changed monitor settings, reset defaults. Nothing is changing the end result. Is the monitor just dying? It's an all-in-one. It is less than three years old and not used very hard. What else can I try to troubleshoot? I was going to hook up a second monitor, but b/c it is a AIO I don't believe it has a cable to plug in a 2nd monitor.

This is weird. All I did was squeeze the case near just at the top of the LCD display and the lit screen SUDDENLY had the written display again. As I said the ipod worked but I did not have a written display. With that little trick the ipod returned to normal. About a week later , the ipod had a relapse and squeezing the case dont remembe whether it was the left or right side, brought it back to life and it has behaved itself for the past 3 months. I hope this information is useful to others with the same problem who do exist.

  • 14" imac 1.83GHz LCD screen suddenly too bright

My computer screen is suddenly too bright with a sort of a white washed look. I've checked the display settings and brightness in System Preferences and played with the greyscale and white on black options in the Universal Access panel, all to no avail.
I hooked up an LCD projector and the projected image is perfectly normal while the computer display is impossible to read. Even the most dim setting is too bright. Help!

  • Intel 20"iMac screen seems too bright

I just bought a 2Ghz, 2GB Ram, 20" intel iMac. The screen seems to be washed out/too bright even after the brightness is adjusted. Is this a common problem? What is the remedy?

I have the same issue. I do a lot of digital photography and my prints should look close to what I see on the screen. My older eMac and MDD G4 w/ a 20" flat LCD screen gave me excellent results. I was struggling with the color profile on this new iMac (2.4 GHz Intel w/ 20" GLOSSY screen). I got close selecting the Adobe 1998 profile and adjusting the brightness down to about 60%. This helped but I'm not 100% satisfied. I called Apple and one of the tech support engineers suggested I also go into the Universal Access setting and adjust the contrast ever so slightly. Again, this is moving in the right direction and I need to view this setting for a while before I say it's what I'm after. It does help. Also, go to birdphotographers.net and select forum and go all the way to the bottom of the screen, they have a great step wedge to verify you monitor settings, you should see all steps w/o saturation.
    Good luck,
    Rich
b.t.w. disregard my old profile-I'll do an update.

  • Satellite A660-18N - Screen it too bright so how to update the BIOS?

Hi guys, I need your help with this laptop because it is giving me a lot of problems.
I have changed the screen of this Satellite A660-18N because the one that was fitted in was damaged. I have installed it and is working fine but I'm having problems with the brightness. When I click - on the brightness it goes up and when I click + it goes down. It's way too bright and want to do something to fix it.
Does the bios help to fix this problem and how do I flash the BIOS on these laptops? I did flash BIOS on desktop pc but on this I can't see any way of doing it. Is there any way of fixing the screen without changing the BIOS? Some people said that I have to flash the BIOS because new screens wont work 100% with old BIOS.
    Please help
    Thank you

Thank you very much Xardas for your reply.
It is 3rd party screen. I bought it from ebay. They said that it's original. It says made from Samsung. The original one was also made from samsung. The guys from Toshiba said that you might have to update bios so that it will accept other screens. I told them which one I bought and they did confirm that it should work fine.
I wanted to flash the bios with the latest bios and maybe it could work fine. I just don't know how to do it? I did create a bootable usb and placed the bios in it but don't know the command to flash it. I did go in bios but did not find anything that would be helpful to flash.
I also was thinking to use some kind of software that makes it little bit darker. It's way too bright. My eyes hurt to use it. I always have to use sunglasses.
If you know anything it really would be helpful.
    Thank you

  • My screen is much too bright.

Putting the slider to min. light, the display is still too bright
Is there a fix for that ?
One of my friends have one too, but his light settings is ok.
I have reinstalled the OSX from scratch, but it did not solve the problem.
Can it be that my G5 is a never release with a different display ?
Please help before my eyes burns out.

Yes, the new imacs (isight and intel--not sure which you've got) are too bright. You can help this a tad by going to system prefs>color>calibrate and setting your gamma up to 2.2, but not much. You can also download various utilities, like Gamma Control, to help a bit more, but the best solution is to use a hardware calibrator like the Huey, Spyder, EyeOne, etc.
EDIT Should mention I'm not sure that the software for these devices is intel-compatible, so if that's what you've got you should check with the manufacturer before buying a device.
