Screen turns to static upon restart

Just this morning, I restarted my iMac. Right after it asked me "are you sure" and I clicked OK, most of the screen turned to a static-like haze before it went to black. It does restart fine, but it does this now on each restart. Any ideas on what's up?
Thanks.
Frank

I just found out more about this problem: it only occurs when font smoothing is set to turn off below 12 pts fonts! When I have it set to 8, the problem does not occur!

  • Screen turning grey and demanding restart

This may have been covered already, and my apologies if so, but I'm in the middle of a project and a google search turned up nothing. Every so often - and it seems to only happen when I'm using Safari - the screen will turn grey (from top to bottom) and a multi-language box will tell me I need to restart by holding down the power button and then starting up again. There is no way out of this, and it destroys whatever I'm working on. This may only happen once every few weeks, but I'd like to change that to never. What is the reason for this, and how can I fix it? It's a newer MacBookPro, 10.6. Thanks for your time and attention.

    That's a *kernel panic.*
They are usually caused by hardware problems, but can be software, especially kernel extensions.

  • Screen turning to white

Suddenly screen turn to white until restarting device

    Hi shadysham,
Oh no! That doesn't sound too good. Luckily you have taken the correct troubleshooting steps found in this article:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
    Display shows a white screen
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
If the iPhone will not turn off, try to reset it.
If that doesn't work, try restoring the device.
If the issue comes up again, I highly advise taking step three: restoring the device.
    Thanks,

  • Mac randomly crashes, screen turns green and white, and it works fine upon restart. What causes this and how can I fix it?

My MacBook Pro 13 inch (I've had it for about a year and a half) has started crashing randomly. It happens about once a week and it will happen when I'm in the middle of either watching a video, typing a paper, playing a game, etc. The computer clicks loudly and the screen becomes a series of green and white lines. It works fine upon restart, but it's still annoying whenever it happens. What causes this? Is it fixable?

The image suggests an issue with the graphics board.
The issue may happen more when your machine is generating additional heat, as when you're watching or processing video, or gaming. I can't say for certain, of course, but certain things will reduce the chance of the problem recurring:
    1. Keep your machine as cool as possible. When there's additional heat, turn up the fan, or use an app like HD Fan Control to reduce the heat. Use your computer the way you see fit, but be conscious of heat.
    2. Back up on a regular basis. Logic board problems can lead to more serious issues down the line, so backing up is a good way of safeguarding your data.
    3. Look up "Logic Board Woes" on Google for a comprehensive discussion of the issue.

  • My macbook pro suddenly freezes; screen turns off and computer freezes.  Have to hard restart.  Error message appears upon restart, saying something about kernel, etc.  Can anyone please help on this issue?

For the past month or more I've encountered what I consider to be quite a serios problem with my Macbook pro.  The laptop suddenly freezes without warning, the screen turns black, while the hard drive apparently stals and the system no longer responds.  The only way to resolve this issues is to restart the computer via a hard reset.  After restarting, an error message box shows up asking me to report the error, which I've already done on numerous occassions.  The problem occurs at a frequency of 1 every 2-3 days, sometimes more often than that.  The error message that comes up is very complicated but contains some key words amongst which includes "kernel."  This makes me believe that it's an issue with the video card, and was wondering how I can remediate this problem so as to get the normal function of my laptop back.  If anyone can be of any help, I would greatly appreciate it.

  • Help! I was downloading apps and my 4th generation froze, so I turned it off and restarted it twice. And it is just on the screen with the apple i dont know what to do. Please help!

I was downloading apps that i deleted and my 4th generation froze. So i turned it off and restarted it and nothing happened. It is just showing me the apple screen after you restart it. I dont know what to do please help!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Translucent impromptu possible "hacker" message interrupts current session, locks MacBook Pro screen and demands that I restart by holding down the power button of my LapTop to turn it off first. Any thought? Could this be another way to mess with us?

I was listening to a YouTube video on the history of X15 rocket airplanes. All of sudden, out of the blue a translucent back message drops top down, stops the video, locks up my MacBook Pro screen and demands that I restart my lapTop by first holding down my power switch, then turn the lapTop back on. This has never happened to me before. The message was in black & white, and in about 6 languages: English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Japanese, Chinese. Does any one recognize what this might be?
The Computer turned back on just fine as if nothing had Now I am freeking out that they could be reading my key strokes or something. Could they have used this tactic to install malicious software on my computer by first taking away my ability to do anything about it being that I am not a software engineer? Can any one think of anything simillar? I reported this as a bug to APPLE the regular way, then cleared my Safari cookies, then run software update which returned nothing new as in " your software is up to date at this time."
    Can any one please help?

    Hi stedman1,
Thank you so much. This seems to make sense to me now. I was freaking out a bit that some hacker could be messing with my MacBook Pro. I will be monitoring this issue from now on as it has never happened before.

My phone died last night and when I plugged it in it wouldn't turn on.I tried restarting it but it has yet to turn on since last night,It was just a black screen,i try the on/off and home buttons together but its not working,What should I do?

How long have you had your phone? Because if you've had it a long time, the battery in the phone might of died on you. Or have you dropped it in water, snow, from high up? All those things could of disconnected something internally in your phone, or permentaly damaged the internal hard drive its self, or the sims card.

  • Trying to reload tiger and upon restart i get the black/grey death screen,,

hello, 'ive had some problems with some of my programs in so i need to reloaqd tiger.. the disk appears fine on my desk top, when i click on the tiger icon, there is no problem, i get a window telling me i need to restart which i do but this is where the problem comes in... upon restart i get a frozen screen, grey and black i think its called the death screen, and it does mention kernal alot?
    any suggestions?

It sounds like to me you have a bad driver installed, or you are using the wrong 10.4 installer.
For G5s older than April 26, 2005, you may use the 10.4 retail installer which looks like *
For G5s newer than April 26, 2005, you must use the disks that came with the machine to restore Tiger, or if it is older than April 3, 2006 you can use the 10.4.6 retail installer disk which also looks like the above image. The fact you are able to boot 10.3 on it suggests you have an older than April 26, 2005 Mac, though some people have been able to hack around that restriction.

    Try:
    - Going to NF support site/contacting them
    - Try a different adopter
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
