Screen Unlock requires Switching User

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2013)
3 GHz Intel Core i7
Yosemite 10.10.1
Every time I deliberately lock the screen (control + shift + power) or the screen locks by it self after 5 minutes of inactivity, it will not accept my password to unlock the screen. I would have to click Switch User to log back in. In this state, when I attempt to shutdown, it asks for password because it thinks there are other users logged in. On the other hand, this wasn't an issue in my older (heavier) mac book pro.
What configuration I should set or look into to fix it?  Or is this by design?
Thanks!

I understand your argument, but I have to disagree because it still takes the user to know the right segment of the PIN, wether there is or isn't a confirmation button to press.
Apple, Microsoft with the new win 8.1 release and all the other guys are going for the simple way...

  • Windows 8.1 U1 bug with unresponsive start screen when fast-switching users

While testing out the bug described here ( http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/c9a3c605-9e7f-47ce-84ec-791a1627ebf0/windows-81-u1-hiding-taskbar-in-multimonitors-setup-bug?forum=w8itprogeneral ), I've found another bug - if the secondary
monitor is lower than the main one, start screen becomes completely unresponsive when fast switching users. You can click on any tiles, on start in lower left corner or try searching apps - it does nothing. Here's the screen recording http://1drv.ms/1k8au8O
. The secondary screen is usable at the same time, and sometimes you can run start screen on it (in such a case, it disappears on main screen and appears on secondary screen, but is also unresponsive), or you can't click at start icon at all (it appears highlighted
in the taskbar and doesn't response to clicks).
MSFT's testers should test such a setup a bit more, I think.

    Hi,
What’s your meaning of secondary monitor is lower than the main one?
I test the dual screen, fast user switching works good, so what’s your condition?

  • On screen lock screen, the keyboard does not work, switching to the switch-user screen the keyboard works again

    Mac OS-X 10.7.5, Mac Air.
This began about 5 to 7 days ago.
    Steps to reproduce:
    Step 1:
Close the lid, or the system 'powers down', or goes to the screen saver mode.
    Step 2:
Open the lid, press the power button, or what ever to wake up the Mac Air
The "Enter your password" screen is presented.
They keyboard is not responsive, I cannot type anything.
The touch pad works, I can power on/off the machine.
    They keyboard is not functional.
Result: I cannot log in again.
Expected behavior: The keyboard should be working I should be able to unlock the screen.
    Workarounds:
Then click on my name, or any other user of the machine and it works fine.
I can now unlock the screen and return to where I was.
    Expected behavior:
I should not have to go to the "Switch User Screen" to log back in.

    More detail:  Some keys on the keyboard do work, ie: caps lock toggles the led, and the function keys across the top seem to work {that is I can adjust brightness, and so forth}
the letter and numbers, and perhap others do not work.

  • How come the switch user option is missing from my lock screen?

I upgrade to Lion my iMac Core 2 Duo and now when I lock the screen the switch user option is missing from the lock screen, you just have to cancel o renter as the original user, so that if another member of my family wants to switch and use the mac he or she cannot do it.
This is what I am talking about (image taken from a lion review): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/134544/forum/Schermata%2007-2455766%20alle%2011.05.12.pn g
The switch user option is totaly absent, I just have the cancel.
It that a bug or what?
Please note this happens only when I lock the screen from the screensaver, i.e. requesting the password to restart from the screensaver, if I get to the login windows all users appears correctly and people can switch back and forth.
    Thank you.

I just talked to apple support.  They said Lion doesn't support this feature.  They gave me a work-around, which was to disable requiring a password in the screen saver.  Then enable user switching so it appears in the top right of the banner.  Note that since the screen saver no longer locks the screen, in order to actually lock the screen the user must click on the upper right user list and select something like "Login user...".
This issue has left me disappointed with apple for a few reasons.  Hopefully someone at apple will take note:
    1. Apple removed a useful feature.
    2. Apple did not provide a response to this thread which would have been the best forum to inform users of this change.  It would have saved me and apple one long phone call.

My carrier is Straight Talk (using ATT network) and they require the user to enter the APN settings in order to access their data network. My Iphone 4s is factory unlocked but I can not get to the Cellular Data Network tab to enter the settings?

Yes ATT hides the APN settings so when you try to use a st sim it automatically reads on AT&T network so the APN settings are hidden and cannot be accessed however you can go to apn.straighttalk.com on you'r phone and select APN/data settings then select AT&T then iPhone and a screen will pop up asking if you would like to install the profile for whatever reason it's not verified but works fine. You can also go to www.unlockit.co.nz and set up a straight talk APN profile that is verified not sure exactly what that means but both work to get the data working on the phone for straight talk but it does not make the MMS work. There are a couple other methods I have read about one is on howardforums using ibackupbot to manually change the files on the phone I haven't been able to get mine to stick using that method but other people have and there is a sim swap method to trick the phone to reveal APN settings using a tmobile sim I have not tried this but other people have with success. The last two methods mentioned will make both data and MMS work

  • How to correct or fix slow imac on start up or when switching user.  Blue Screen will stay on for 3-5 minutes.

How do I fix a slow imac on start up and when switching user?  The blue screen will stay on for 3-5 minutes.

How much free space do you have on your hard disk? And have you ever performed a backup & clean install after an OS X upgrade?

  • Unable to Switch Users on Window 8 Start Screen

I can not switch users from the Windows 8 Start Screen.
Previously when I clicked on the current user Icon in the upper right corner, all the users were displayed for selection.
Now it just displays a pull-down menu (1) Change account picture, (2) Lock and (3) Sign out.
When I (3) Sign Out the display turns black then returns with the current user sign in screen.

I am having the same problem, only there is NO option to Select Other User.  This is the second time this issue has happened and I would like to know how to re-enable the option to switch to another user without refreshing the PC.

  • Can't switch users from lock screen in Cinnamon 2.0.14

Hi! I have searched the forum and couldn't find anything that answered my question.
The expected behaviour is that there should be a 'switch user' button on the lock screen to take the user to the login manager. Unfortunately this is not the case, and the only way to use the computer is to either log in to the last used account, or do a hard reset. Is there a configuration option somewhere that will enable such a button?
    Thanks
P.S. Another slightly related question. Every time the computer wakes from sleep there is a brief pause while a line ending in 'suspend' is printed on a black screen. This is repeated on each wake so that there are multiple lines on the screen. Is there any way to stop this behaviour?

Unfortunately the suggestion on that page simply returns:

However, I have replaced GDM with LightDM and that is working perfectly. Thanks for telling me where to look!

  • Switch Users Option on Lock Screen

I am at a community college setting up new macs for a lab.  When someone doesn't log out and let the computer lock up, there is no option to switch users.  The computer has to be turned off for someone else to log in.  The older macs we replaced showed this option.  I just want to know how to get it on the lock screen.

Try System Preferences/Users & Groups/Login Options - Show fast user switching menu as. You will need to have more than one user set up.

  • How to get back to default user login from 'switch user' screen

    Hi
I have a macbook air and mistakenly pressed 'switch user' from the login screen. Now I am stuck on a different login screen with now option to go back to the main / usual one?
Is there a keyboard shortcut or something to go back? The only option I have are to 'sleep' 'restart' or 'shutdown' and I don't want those because of unsaved work?!
    Thanks

    Hi Aritra,
Just have a look at the report RSUSR200. This report is part of the AIS (Audit Information System) and will report users who have not logged on for a specified period of time.
Also have a look at the report RSUSR000.
You can even find out more reports from SE38 searching for RSUS* & then click f4.
You can get the names of the tables & the flow if you go through these programs.

  • Server 2008R2SP1 Domain Controllers occasionally hanging at switch user screen

The server will respond to ping, but seems to stop processing authentication requests, and has odd behavior with kerberos and LDAP requests. When you access the console, you can see the lock screen, and can get to the switch user button. When you click on
switch user, the screen goes black with a blinking white cursor in the upper right hand screen. It does this immediately, it does not seem to reboot - no BIOS or UEFI passes from the hardware.
Forcing a reboot with the power button will give you the option to start windows normally, and this seems to recover the Domain Controller. This has happened to me now on one Virtual DC and on one Physical DC. There is no common hardware between them.
I would say it looked like hardware issues based on my googling, but now that seems to be ruled out.
Has anyone seen anything like this?
Ok, some more research on event logs looks like it might well have been memory exhaustion:
The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the pool was empty. This was accompanied with many other errors. After reboot, memory use started at 98% for a while, after maybe 10 minutes dropped to 77% and after 45 minutes dropped
    to 14% used.

    Hi,
So what is the problem now?
You could use RAMMap to gain understanding of the way Windows manages memory, to analyze application memory usage, or to answer specific questions about how RAM is being allocated.

  • Switch user screen

Is it possible to go directly from the screen saver or sleep mode to the switch user screen without clicking the switch user button? I know it's minor but I'm just curious if it's possible to change that?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Open windows Control Panel, open Personalization, click the Screen Saver link in the bottom right and in the following window remove the tick from the box next to 'On resume, display log-on screen'.  Click Apply, then Ok to save this setting.

  • How to avoid the switch user screen after screen saver

HP Pavilion HPE, Model: h8-1280t, Intel i7,. Win 7 Home Edition - 64 bit - brand new
Following screen saver, computer returns to a "Switch User" screen.  There is only 1 user and I want to avoid going to that screen since it dramatically slows the recognition and return function.  How can I go from Screen Saver directly back to the screen I was working on without going through the Switch User screen first?

  • ARD and screen sharing become unresponsive when switching users

This problem is STILL occurring with 10.6.6 and ARD 3.4. See this archived thread for prior information:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2177922
Whenever I'm sharing the screen of any headless Mac and I attempt to use fast user switching, the screen sharing window closes and I am unable to reconnect to screen sharing on the remote Mac until I reboot it.
This isn't a one-off problem with some esoteric feature that is rarely used. This is a serious bug related to an established and useful feature of the operating system. This problem has been happening for more than a year over Mac OS X versions since at least 10.5.8. There is an OpenRadar bug report for it. (See archived thread link.) This problem is an enormous pain to me and the enterprise customers I represent Apple to.

I agree completely. This a HUGE bug. I've just installed a MacMini with OS X server for file serving, VPN, and application services. I run it headless, and it an enormous pain not to be able to switch users. Apple needs to address this.

From the way you are describing it, it sounds like the HD has failed. Please look over Gray screen appears during startup for troubleshooting steps. You can also run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode, it may take 2-3 passes for any error codes to appear and each pass takes approximately 30-60 minutes. However either way you should plan on taking it into an Apple Store or AASP for service.
