Screen will randomly go black

Screen just randomly goes black... If I press the "reduce brightness" key on they keyboard to the equivalent of turning it completely off and turn it back on I can get up to 10 mins of screen working.
I still have no Idea what can this be, and I cant find any answers online.
Any ideas?
I've restarted, reseted PRAM, removed battery, plugged and unplugged a lot of things... I'm lost and out of warranty =/

I have the same problem.
I don't think is hardware related, since I've seen several posts of people with the same issue in the last weeks.
Probably it started after updating 10.6.4, I don't know for sure. That update includes this: "resolves a display sleep issue with MacBook Pro (Early 2010) computers" (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4150). Maybe that had an effect for older Macbook users, I don't know.
I tried to reset the SMC, but it didn't work.
I also try to delete the "com.apple.windowserver.plist" preferences (as specify on http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1573), and it seemed to work for a couple of hours, but then the problem returned.
Another that thing that fix it temporary as the "reduce brightness" was to set one of the corners to "display sleep".
I hope this is a software issue and that Apple fixes it soon. It's so annoying.

my macbook screen goes black at random points when I am using it. I know it is still running as music continues to play and I can vaguely make out the content of what is on the screen. Sometimes the screen will flicker between black and normal. Can I fix this?

    Emily..
Could be the graphics card, run the Apple Hardware Test
If the hardware test doesn't reveal any problems, use Lion Recovery.

  • Unlocking my iPhone 5s (running 7.1.2)either by Touch ID or passcode the screen will quickly flash black before showing the Home screen.

    HEY , please help.
im currently running on ios 7.1.2 and unlocking my iPhone 5s either by Touch ID or passcode the screen will quickly flash black before showing the Home screen. You know its a pure random thing , like a second. Its annoying . Help please , do i need to restore i hard resetted it twice .

You may have fragmented RAM on the phone; that second is the time it takes to move apps around in memory to make room for the Springboard (the internal app that displays the Home screen). To fix this do the following:
While on the Home screen double-press the HOME button.
For each app displayed, swipe up on its screen image to close the app and free its memory
When all apps have been closed this way reset the phone by holding the HOME and SLEEP buttons at the same time until an Apple logo appears
If this doesn't fix it you should restore the phone using iTunes. Please let us know if this solves it, however.

    Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems?esab=a&s=troubleshooting&r=3&as=s#w_5-reinstall-firefox here].
<b>WARNING:</b> Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u>
Please report back to see if this helped you!
    Thank you.

  • Macbook Pro Early 2009 Randomly Sleeps / Black Screen While In use

My macbook pro Early 2009, randomly goes to sleep while I am using the computer, I first noticed it occuring while I was using the mini display adapter to a computer monitor, and using a second monitor and watching a movie, the screen would go blank and I would have to wake it from sleep for it to come back on, sometimes closing the lid, sometimes pressing the trackpad, or keyboard to get it to work again, sometimes it would go back to sleep within 1 minute of waking.
I assume the problem could have been from perhaps water damage, as I recently used a wet paper towel to clean my keyboard, and perhaps the paper towel was a little to moist, not overly but perhaps just enough to damage the sleep sensor. I am still unsure where that is located, the only other problem I have noticed with the computer is my [battery service indicator] notification has been on for the last year, but since I never used the battery, I always have it plugged in at the desk I never bothered getting it serviced. So
I'm assuming its the Sleep Sensor? but here is what I hace done, just to make sure its not software. I was orignaly running 10.8, and after being frustrated while watching a movie and having my computer sleep every 2 minutes, I whipped my hardrive, put 10.9 developers preview on a usb and installed that.
On 10.9 I can swipe with 3 fingers on the trackpad and the display appears but if i let go of the swipe it goes back to black screen.
I can see Icons like, brightness, and sound, when adjusting the levels, but screen is black behind the icons
The mouse pointer cursor is visible but the screen is black
I can move the mouse and hear system sounds, but screen is black. Now I have to actually restart the computer because It seems like I cannot wake it up at all.
So I formatted the hardrive again and
I tried reinstalling Leopard OSX , as that was the disc that came with the mac,
but have Same problems in 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 I upgraged to developer 10.9 to see if the problem would fix, but still occurs.
I ran hardware diagnostic off the leopard disc 2, by pressing the D key on startup with disc in drive, extended hardware test reported no problems.
I SMC reset and PRAM reset,  [control]+[option]+[shift]+[powerbutton] while computer is turned off with power plugged in
and after that failed I tried pressing [Option]+[Command]+[P]+[R] before startup chime, chime repeat let go of keys and it booted normally.
Then computer randomly sleeps while in use, while using safari and it has happened 3 times within 2 minutes of typing this.
I have downloaded a program called InsomniaX, and activated the disable sleep for Lid and Idle, but now the screen will randomly just go black and then turn back on, sometimes it will just black screen for 10 seconds and come back on, altho after changing some more of the settings It appears to be not as frequent. It hasen't gone to sleep since writing this entire paragraph, so thats a good sign.
I was going to take it into the apple store, and have them run diagnostics, but I hate going into those stores because of all the iphone people, crowding the place.
Well my screen just blacked and came back within 10 seconds on while I typing this line so InsomniaX didn't work. I hope having the sleep sensor replaced isn't too expensive, or if my model even has such a sensor.
I read on another topic that this problem can be replicated by users putting a magnet on their laptop, something like an iphone or a money clip or even having one of these in their pocket while using the macbook on their lap. I have not had anything near the computer, so I have a different problem.
Just thought Id document this, will let you know what happens after the diagnostic, I tried apple support, and they said I did more than they would have done, so he couldn't really tell me anything besides take it into genius bar, (is that what its still called) and have them run diagnostic, [note its different than the hardware test on the cd]
and my computer screen goes black again, wow..

Hi pictureswithPS, welcome to Apple Discussions!
    1. I have an original late-2008 unibody MBP that was purchased a week after the introduction. I have never had a single "black screen of death" ever, and I do some gaming under OS X on my machine. The heat issues are, in my humble opinion, greatly exaggerated. Does the machine get warm? Yes. However, any computer with this much power in this thin of an enclosure is going to get warm. Mine has never crashed, frozen, black screened, etc. once.
    2. I don't think PS is particularly intensive on the graphics card. It may use the graphics card, yes, but I don't think it will be quite as intensive as a 3D modeling application or 3D games. I would doubt you would ever run into problems anyway.
    3. Lastly I am aware that their are tools to manage fan speed behavior - as a workaround to cool down temperatures. Using this software would it void the warranty that is provided by Apple?
No, it wouldn't likely void the warranty. However, if your fans die prematurely as a result of running them at high speeds for extended periods of time, I doubt Apple would be especially happy about replacing them. I do not use any 3rd party tools to manage my fans, and never will. It is simply not necessary.

  • How can i fix my mac book pro. My safari crashes all the time, my screen will turn black for no reason, My iPhoto crashes during upload from my iPhone, I can't highlight anything and I can't drag anything.

Someone PLEASE help me! I cant figure out what is going on with my computer.  I don't install anything weird, but my brother does.  He's very good at computer tech stuff and is in I.T, but I cant help but blame him for all the problems my Mac is having.  Nothing works like it should.  My safari will randomally crash, my screen will randomally turn back, my iphoto will crash during uploading from my iPhone, I cant highlight anything, I can't drag anything.  When I want to click on something, I have to click over and over again just for it to even register.  I know everything is up to date and recently reset my PRAM.  I'm running Lion and have a lot of room on my hardrive.  I have an external harddrive and I'm wondering if I should just move all of my important files over to it and completly wipe out my computer's hardrive and start from scratch.

Some folks can't leave well enough alone, and insist on downloading all sorts of additional "stuff" that ends up making their Mac unstable.
Standard Mac OS X on properly-operating Hardware does not crash, unless you start installing too many add-ons.
You can run "just the basics" by holding down the Shift key at Startup. This does one pass of Disk Repair, then loads a minimal set of extensions, and comes up in Safe Mode. If it works OK that way, but crashes in "regular", it's the add-ons.
There ia another layer of add-on junk that can be added to Safari. If the only remaining problem is Safari crashing, those add-ons can be disabled as well.

  • Will not boot - Black screen A2 code on bottom right.

    mobo:Z97S SLI KRAIT EDITION
Samsung SSD - Windows and games are installed here
WD HDD - Everything else is put on this one.
    Windows 7
I installed an ISO mounting program called Gizmo Central onto my HDD
After installation it said that it needed to restart. After it restarted I got a black screen with an A2 code. The screen will go completely black, and then it will back to the screen with the A2 code in the bottom right. It won't boot up BIOS, unless I do 1 of 2 things:
    1. power off the pc, unplug the sata cable from the HDD, power pc back on, bios and windows will boot up. I can then turn the pc off, plug the sata cable back into the HDD, and it boots up fine into windows, but if I reboot again, it goes back to that black screen with the A2.
    2. I have put in a disc into the dvd drive, and I do not get that screen. (I've been doing this as a workaround since it's much easier)
I have tried a number of things to resolve this, but none of them have restored my computer to it's perfect working order that it was previous to installing this program.
When I tried to uninstall that program it wasn't even on my installed programs list, so I deleted the folder it was in. This didn't resolve the issue.
I have wiped everything off of my HDD drive. This did not resolve the issue.
I have triple checked that my SSD is the first in the boot order. I even disabled the HDD from the HD boot order entirely. No change...
I updated my motherboard drivers. No change.
It's almost like for whatever reason my BIOS isn't listening to the boot order and doing my DVD drive, HDD, and then the SSD ever since I installed that Gizmo ISO mounting program.
I set the BIOS to factory default settings. That did not fix this issue.
I have use a windows system restore point from 2 days ago when it was working flawlessly. No change.
I'm thinking about reinstalling Windows, but logically it doesn't make sense to do that since the error happens even if I power off/on from BIOS with the HDD plugged in, so it I'm willing to venture that it's not Windows at fault here.
Also the computer used to boot up in like 8 seconds. It's still fast to boot up, but ever since this started to happen, it takes like 15-30 seconds for my usb mouse, and usb keyboard to register after windows starts up. It use to be immediate. My computer is so messed up right now, and I don't even know how it got like this or how to fix it. I'm pretty savvy and can follow directions well, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

What intel USB driver version do you use? There's one more thing to try, try plug the kb/ms to USB 3.0 ports except the ones under the LAN port, and check if it happens again.
I'm glad you recommended checking Intel drivers. I typed appwiz.cpl to go to the installed programs list in windows. Found "intel USB 3.0 extensible host controller". I tried uninstalling this. It made my mouse and keyboard not work for about 1 minutes. Windows downloaded some drivers for my devices, and asked to reboot. I rebooted. Mouse/keyboard responded right away! Just incase it was a fluke I rebooted another 2 times, and each time the mouse and keyboard are immediately responsive. I'm SO glad that my PC is back to it's original working order. Thank you to you all for taking time out of your day to help me. I really appreciate it!

No, sounds like when you dropped it an cracked the screen it may have also damaged the logic board or the repair person damaged a cable.

After applying update my apple tv2 will randomly go to a black screen that lasts for a few seconds. When it gets back to normal after a few seconds it acts like the video never stopped since its farther along in the timeline. This happens with all video content wether its from Netflix or streaming from my iTunes library

You might try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for a 30 seconds. If that doesn't help try using another HDMI cable.

  • Early 2011 Macbook Pro - Black screen at random

I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro, running Mac OS X (10.7.5). Seemingly at random, the screen will go black and the only way to get it back is to hold the power button down. When it turns back on, everything is running as normal. It's been happening more and more frequently, so I'm wondering is this a problem I can fix on my own? Can it be fixed or is it just a glitch I should just deal with?
(Please explain everything to me as if I were a 5-year-old)

    Early 2011 15" Macbook Pro.
Add me to the long list of customers experiencing display issues.  HUGE problems with a blank screen when waking from sleep and difficulty starting up (video glitches & hi fan speed).  After about 6 months and 2 genius bar visits I finally did a complete HD wipe/clean install of Mavericks with all of the default settings.
The situation has improved only slightly overall, but at first things were great.  I was confident I had it licked.
As I restored apps & profile settings things start to get wonky.  The last install I did was Picasa (I thought this app was the culprit before the wipe).  I successfully restored my Picasa settings and all was fine.  I even closed the lid and when I opened it the next day the screen came right back on.  Then I tried to sync my iPhone and BAM!  Screen goes out and the system is hung (no response to keystrokes or sound events).
    Power button shutdown.
Restarted and the Macbook hung as the previously opened apps reopened.
    Power button shutdown again.
Restart this time was normal and everything opened just fine.  The console logs show NOTHING indicate any issues or that the machine experienced a kernel panic or anything like that.
It's been 1 whopping 36 hours since my clean install and I've already crashed twice.
But now I use my Macbook with anxiety as I never know when it's going to crap out again.  Maybe it's time I switch back to Linux on an inexpensive wintel laptop as I won't buy another Apple laptop if this is the what I should expect from a $2000 machine.
Incidently, I also have a 2010 MB pro which had dispaly issues and Apple replaced the logic board at no cost (out of warranty) as part of a replacement program.   I've seen MANY forum posts suggesting that Apple should step up and provide the same level of service for the Early 2011 MB Pros...  I tend to agree.

  • Brand new Macbook Pro 15"inch laptop screen randomly going black

My laptop screen randomly going black during the use of computer, but the cursor is active and it moves with the track-pad. I bought this macbook pro 15"Inch laptop just 3 weeks ago. Did anyone come across this issue? Is there any alternative for this issue?

    Hello Clinton
Thank you for your prompt response. I took an appointment with Genius Bar. Yes, this is a brand new laptop purchased it online through Apple website and received it on May 29th.  I started noticing this issue from last week and it is happening at least 4 to 5 times in a day.
If this is really a hardware problem, is there any chance for laptop replacement or what will they do?
    Regards!

  • Mid 2010 MacBook Pro: Will randomly blue-screen and Safari repeatedly crashes.

I bought my MacBook Pro in June/July of last year, and it has worked perfectly fine up to this point. However, for the past 2 months or so, my computer will randomly go to a blue screen and log me out. Also, Safari will crash several times (it had never crashed on me until the blue-screen problem started. Both of these issues surfaced at the same time). For the most part, the blue-screening problem only happens when I'm using the internet, but sometimes it will happen when I am offline as well. This is an infrequent/inconsistent problem, though. It will blue-screen and Safari will crash one week, but then it will be perfectly fine for the next three or four weeks. What's wrong/how do I fix it?

    Hi JRC8.8,
It sounds like you have been on the right track in trying to troubleshoot this issue. You may want to see if your MacBook Pro will boot directly to the Apple Hardware Test, as outlined in the following article:

  • Whenever I try to use my macbook, it will work for about 10 min. then the screen will go black, the computer will not respond to my commands, and I have to restart it. Can anyone tell me what's going on, and how to fix it? Thank you!!!

Hello everyone, like most people on this site, I am having difficulties understanding and fixing my Macbook Pro. About a month ago my computer screen went black, the computer was unresponsive, and it started making a beeping noise. I restarted the computer, and it seemed to have fixed itself. 6 days ago, I put my laptop into it's case with some papers, went home (about 30 min. after putting laptop into case), and opened my bag. My computer's fans were on, the computer was really hot, and when I opened the computer, the screen was black and unresponsive. I turned it off, let it cool down, turned it back on, started to stream a video on Hulu, and about ten minutes after, the screen went black again and the computer was unresponsive. Now everytime I turn it on after about ten to fifteen minutes the screen will go black, the computer will become unresponsive, and I have to shut it off. The weird thing though is that everytime I restart my computer, when I reopen my account, my computer acts as if nothing has happened, and everything I had opened or unsaved is still there without autosave saving the documents. The screen also goes black and the computer becomes unresposive when I move the computer around. I get a lot of pop-up ads and other crap on my computer when I am on the internet. I don't know if one of those pop-up websites might have given me a virus or may be the cause of this problem. I don't now what is wrong with my computer or how to fix it, but if anyone has any advice, I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!!!!!!! Thank you very much!!!
-- Sincerely, A very confused, scared, and hopless Macbok Owner

To get rid of "pop-up ads and other crap on my computer when I am on the internet", click on Safari in the Menu bar, and select Preferences. Next select Extensions. Delete all of them. Restart Safari.
The first step in addressing the black screen is an SMC reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
