Screen won't rotate despite doing 2x factory restores

I've seen a few folks had this prob. The screen no longer rotates when I turn the iPod (e.g. when viewing photos, web pages etc). I tried the factory restore as suggested in other threads, but mine is still not working. Is there anything else I can try before taking it to a service centre?
Also, I bought this 2nd hand but it is under Apple warranty (till sep 2010). I'm assuming Apple still need to honour the warranty (I'm in Ireland).
Thanks

Thx for that - I suspected as much. Can anbody comment on the fact that (although still under warranty), it is registered in the name of the previous owner (I assume)?
Will that matter to Apple once it's still under manufacturer's warranty? I could probably trace the original owner if needs be.
Thx

Screen won't rotate despite trying all recommendations in help ?

Is there a lock symbol at the top of the screen next to the battery indicator ? If there is, then depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (rotation lock or mute notifications), then you can lock/unlock the rotation by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085
If there isn't a lock symbol then try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Next step is to Restore it in iTunes from your backup. If that does not work they try Restoring it as a new phone. If still no go it is a hardware failure and you will need to get it serviced.
And you are not showing the hardware lock icon on the top right of the home screen?

  • My iPad mini screen won't rotate

Why my ipad min screen won't rotate.

If you see a lock icon in the upper right corner of the screen - then the screen orientation is locked.
Try the side switch above the volume rocker first and see if that unlocks the screen. If that doesn't do it, swipe up from the bottom to get to the control center. Look for the lock icon in the row of icons at the top. It will be the last one on the right. Check that to see if the screen is locked.
If the screen is unlocked but still will not rotate, reset the iPad.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the button

  • My iPad video screen won't rotate orientation?

iPad screen won't rotate when watching apple movies, still works for other apps etc???

Close the videos app in the recents tray and reboot the iPad.
Tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • IPad screen won't rotate.the locks are not on

iPad screen won't rotate. I checked to make sure it wasn't lock. Can anyone help please

    Hi,
There are three things you can do.
    1) Check the function of the side switch - in the Settings app, under General.
    2) Try a reset by holding the on/off and home buttons together until the Apple logo appears.
    3) If this fails, take it to an Apple Store.
Hope this helps and Happy Holidays!

  • TS3274 My iPad screen won't rotate

Please help, I have an iPad 2. My screen won't rotate, I have checked the settings & also the lock on the bottom bar but it's still not working????

Check a number of other topics related to this question - causes include hardware lock (with the rotation / mute switch), software lock (music controls) or possibly an app issue - see this discussion https://discussions.apple.com/message/19636641#19636641 in particular for details on different possible causes as well as links for further information (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085 in particular). If the usual solutions don't work, it may be worth looking into newly installed / updated apps that may hijack the rotation lock as I've just come to experience myself.

  • Ipod 3rd Gen Touch screen won't rotate to landscape

My Ipod Touch 3rd Gen froze in middle of the screen rotating to landscape mode one day. After having to restart it the screen won't rotate all the time now, just whenever it chooses to. I checked and the screen lock is off.  I've restored it and it worked once then went right back to the problem, same as if I reset or turn it off. I'm starting to think something got corrupted after it froze and then I reset it.

I think the highest I've dropped it from is maybe 3 feet but it still worked fine. When it froze I had it in landscape then flipped it to normal, put it on a JVC dock the went to flip it into landscape again to play a video at which point it just froze. Then I restarted it and it's been deciding when it wants to rotate. As if right now I have he newest OS and it's curretly working. It may be fixed or it may be a trap. I'll keep an eye on it for today then see of it still ends up don the smas thing.

You will need to restore your device as New to remove a Restrictions passcode. Go through the normal process to restore your device, but when you see the options to restore as New or from a backup, be sure to choose New.
You can restore from a backup if you have one from BEFORE you set the restrictions passcode.

  • HT5192 I lost siri doing a factory restore how do I get it back??

I lost Siri doing a factory restore to my Iphone 4S, how do I get Siri back?? My phone is currently acting like a Iphone 4, of which I also own.
    Thanks

No when I did the factory restore, it took all the information as well as apps that were intended for my Iphone 4 nothing for Siri...
When I hold the home button, it just comes up as voice control and not siri...

  • IPad screen won't rotate

I have an iPad 2, out of warranty, that won't rotate (one of 150 iPads that are nearing the end of their usage cycle and will be sold at the end of the school year). It is stuck in landscape mode and won't rotate to portrait mode. In an attempt to fix it, I've tried everything short of opening it up: I've done a hard reset, I've done a system restore, and I even ran the battery clear down until nothing would come on the screen when the power button was pushed. Nothing has made any difference. (And no, the screen rotation is not locked, and no, the side switch is set to Mute, not Lock Rotation.)
It makes me think the internal gyroscope is not functioning. Now here's where it gets interesting. I have downloaded the free Gyroscope app, on this and several other iPads for comparison. I can report two significant findings on the iPad that won't rotate properly: (1) All 3 axes of rotation on the gyroscope respond properly; and (2) the numbers on the defective iPad do not agree with the numbers on the other iPads. I.e., sitting side-by-side on a flat, level desk top, a "good" iPad reports Yaw: -173 degrees, Pitch: 0 degrees, and Roll: -1 degrees; while the defective iPad reports Yaw: 3 degrees, Pitch: 16 degrees, and Roll: -32 degrees. That leads me to believe that the gyroscope (or accelerometer) needs to be calibrated. However, I'm not aware of any facility for doing that. And furthermore, it's not clear that this has any bearing on the fact that it won't rotate.
So... any ideas or suggestions? I am not averse to opening the device up, if there is a replaceable part. I haven't been able to find any info about such a task. My only other options are, as far as I know: Send it to Apple for replacement at $249, or sell it at a discount since it is not fully functional. Thanks in advance for any useful ideas. - JR

Then you are not the usual user.
If you can disassemble the iPad 2 then you may be able to replace the small custom circuit board containing the gyroscope and accelerometer chips (if you can source the part).
