Screen wouldn't come on?

Just when I was about to decide to keep this iphone 4 (30 days are up in a couple days), I pressed the home button tonight to turn on the screen and...nothing!
Okay, sometimes I've had that happen on all my iphones and just figured I didn't make a good connection so I did it again and....nothing. Tried several times, tried the top button too and still nothing.
Next I tried holding down the top button in case for some reason it had powered down. Nothing.
Tried holding both buttons down. Still nothing.
Tried plugging it into the computer - nothing. Finally, while still plugged in, I held both buttons down again and finally the apple icon came on and in a short time syncing began.
Seems to be working again, but any ideas? Just a fluke? Exchange the phone? Give up and return it?

I read through your thread. Looks like you try to analyze things like I do (I've been working on the proximity sensor).
When I looked back at my battery, after reading your post, it was 82% and I didn't have it plugged into the computer for very long so it had to have been near that level.
That would also fit in fairly well with what I think I did today. I had run it down some, but probably still well over 50% (I didn't actually check). And I had plugged it into the computer for awhile tonight before going out to a meeting. It was maybe 80 minutes after I used it for a few moments at the meeting until I tried it again when I got home and had the problem.
Checked the crash report directory you listed - it was empty.
What bugs me is I can almost guess what the genius will say (I set up an appointment for Tuesday) - he'll tell me to do a restore as new. I HATE that. I do play around with games sometimes (my schedule is weird so I kill time between things I have to do by going on the net or playing games).
For example, I just got through finishing every game of Angry Birds with three stars and all the Golden Eggs - and I'll lose that if I restore as new as a solution.
This restore as new is just too much of a catchall solution, almost like, "Do this even though it might be worthless before we look for some other problem".
Anyway, just for the heck of it, I decided to try to run my battery down and see what happens, then recharge it.

  • Screen won't come back on when held away from ear

Made a call, didn't want to leave a voicemail so I needed to hang up the call. Pulled the phone from my ear, and the screen would not come on. Pushed home, on/off, repeatedly, and got nowhere. Meanwhile I could hear the voicemail timing out, likely with my cursing something like "**** I can't even end this call!!" until finally it hung up on me. Still, the screen wouldn't come on. Finally it did, but it was too late. My voicemail was left, I couldn't change it. What the heck's going on? I never had any problems like this on my first gen iphone. Now, I've got my share of 3G problems, dropping calls, sloooooooowwwwwwww data, then all of a sudden it's fine. I've handled that by turning off 3G most of the time, thinking I'll be patient until Apple and/or AT&T get the phone and network running smoothly. But if I can't control the basic working of the most important aspect of the phone, namely, the PHONE, it's not much use to me at all.
Anyone else have the screen lock up in off mode? During a call? Is the only thing I could do stuff the phone under a pillow until it times out on the other end?

I started having face-detection issues after upgrading my 2G to 2.0x. I have a leather case with a cutout for the prox detector (had it for a year), but it's stretched a little and is now not centered; when I readjusted the hole, the screen immediately came back. It may be that 2.0 might have made it a little more sensitive to prevent false negatives (not detecting the face), where the partial coverage of the sensor before didn't affect it before but does now (false positive).

  • My macbook pro was on sleep mode, and when i opened it again, it wouldn't come off the black screen. It is very hot and also doesn't respond to the power button...

My macbook pro was "asleep". I opened it later, and the screen wouldn't change from black.. The bottom of the laptop is very hot and making a hissing/whirring sound. I tried hitting the power button to turn it off, but the conditions just stayed the same. It doesn't respond to the power button, and the screen just stays black. How do i fix this?!

I will go to the Apple store.  I just thought I would throw it out there to see if anyone had a solution.  They repaired this macbook before twice.  The last time they replaced several things to fix the screen.  I just threw out the question to see if someone could save me the trip to the store.
I was curious if the new programs (like lego games) can cause the computer to run to a point to blank the screen.
And curious if there are other things I can try to get the screen up and running.

  • IPhone screen wouldn't work

Hi - my iPhone 3G got wet in the rain and I was dumb enough to use it immediately afterwards. Now the screen wouldn't light but all else is ok. Have tried keeping the phone in uncooked rice for 2 days but to no avail. Would you have any ideas please if the getting the screen / backlight repaired at the apple store would fix it,or do I just need to buy a new one? I don't have a replacement warrantee as a very old phone plus bought from outside the country. Thanks!

    Morning vikram17000,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at this article:

Display has no backlight or dark screen
Toggle the ringer switch to see if the unit vibrates. If it does, it could be that iPhone is getting power, but is not displaying any image.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.
If the low-battery screen appears, charge the iPhone.
    Hope this helps,
    Mario

  • Home Button suddenly stopped, now screen won't come on?

I was clearing out apps on my iPhone 5 through settings to make room for the new update then when I'd finished I tried the home button and it wouldn't work so I locked the phone to see if that would help but now the screen will not come on. It still vibrates and rings when I get messages or calls but the screen just won't light up. I've had lots of problems with this phone in the past but I've always fixed it but this is beyond me.
My iPhone has also recently stopped getting recognised by my laptop on iTunes but I've not really had much concern for this as I could still use the phone.
I'm at University and this is my only phone to contact home and friends so it is quite important that I get it fixed ASAP.
    Thank you.

Reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)

  • Hi I have an Ipad 3 (new ipad) and it wont let me open up the screen, it just comes up with'this machine hasnt been backed up for so many weeks, when you press ok, it just stays there  and cant do anything else ???

I Have an Ipad 3 and it wont let me open  the screen,it just comes up with 'This machine has not been backed up for so many weeks' and when you prsss ok nothing happens, its just locked out ,. Any Ideas ??

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Step one is to log into a newly created admin user account and see if the problem persists. Also,

  • Full Screen Does Not Come Back After Minimizing Firefox to the Taskbar.

Full Screen Does Not Come Back After Minimizing Firefox to the Taskbar.
I work in full screen almost exclusively ... the toolbar and the URL are still displayed while in full screen.
Before this version (30.0), when I minimized Firefox to the taskbar so that I could go to the desktop or to Windows Explorer, when I finished what I was doing and re-selected Firefox it would go back to full screen. Now, it does not go back to full screen. I can still see the taskbar. I have to press [f11] two more times to get back to full screen.
I have tried with and without addons enabled. Same behavior. I have reset Firefox ... same behavior.
    I'm using Firefox 30.0 and Windows 7 (64 bit).
    Thanks.

    Hi moose53,
Just tested it with a Logitech keyboard and you are right, what you are describing is not expected behavior. I see you do not have any add ons, however does this also reproduce in Safe Mode? [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]]
If yes, try a new profile [[Use the Profile Manager to create and remove Firefox profiles]]

When I plug my iphone in to sync with itunes the summary screen does not come up. I only want to sync music. It starts synching everything.

    Disable automatic syncing.
Whatever is selected under the various tabs for your iPhone sync preferences will go through the process of being checked - if there are any changes in regards to the data you have selected to be synced with or transferred from your computer regardless.

  • Not used my G5 Powermac (late 2004) for ages. Only boots in with Installation disk, but colour dots on white screen and message comes up to reboot machine. Nothing happens.

Not used my G5 Powermac (late 2004) for  about 2 years. Was going to set it up for the lads to do school work.
However it only boots in with Installation disk, but colour dots on white screen and message comes up to reboot machine. However nothing happens apart from me keep trying. Also the numerous fans get louder and louder and louder.....
    Any ideas folks

Can you please provide details on the exact model?
For a start, the PRAM battery is likely dead.  PRAM tells the computer which drive to start with, other basic information.  Still, you can usually get the computer to start, though bad PRAM is unpredictable and could be stopping that.
Some computer models use software to control cooling fans.  If there's no software commands they automatically go into high speed to prevent overheating.  Your software obviously isn't loading, so runaway fans.

  • Screen doesn't come back after sleeping

Occassionally I find that after closing my MPB to put it to sleep the screen doesn't come back up after re-opening the laptop. The pulsing white light which tells you the machine is sleeping goes off, so it seems as if the machine has woken up.... but there's nothing on the screen. I'm forced to use the power button to shut the machine down and start up again.
    Something to worry about?
(p.s. I just tested it again and noticed that when I close the lid the white light isn't pulsing, but rather stays lit)

I just recently (within the last two days) started having this problem myself. I've only owned the Macbook for a few months (purchased it from Apple online store right before the new ones came out). I am thinking it might be due to a recent update or something.
When I close the lid, laptop sleeps but when you open it you can hear the CD tray spin up like it's trying to wake but doesn't. I've tried adjusting screen brightness via f-keys, changing the volume, etc. but seems like system is just locked up. I've been having to hold down the power button and force a reboot.
