Screenium clips are inverted in iMovie HD 6

I have been using Screenium to make screencasts, but when I import the .mov clips into iMovie HD 6, the video is inverted top to bottom. When I just play the video through quicktime, it is right-side up. Is this a problem with iMovie or Screenium? Is there a way to rotate the video 180 degrees to make it right-side up?
Also, if I upload the the quicktime clip to Youtube and try to view it from the web it is also inverted.
Am I missing something simple here? I have been know to do that!

I have never used Screenium nor do I know anything about it, but iMovie 6 prefers footage in .dv format. You may have more success if you use Streamclip to convert the .mov to .dv before importing it into iMovie 6

  • Video clips are missing from iMovie...Yosemite?

I recently downloaded Yosemite. I had a number of video clips (from Cannon Camera) in iMovie; they are no longer showing up. These clips were of my deceased mom. I've tried finding them in Time Capsule - NOT there. Can someone PLEASE HELP ME.
    Thank you
    Mike

I actually found a number of my videos in iPhoto and have created a new folder on desktop. I have moved the clips there and backup things up using Time Capsule. I know that many people may think that Time Capsule is antiquated and they're using iCloud. For those of us that don't use iCloud for photos, etc. I think you need to have a folder of items on your desktop in order to be saved in Time Capsule. Just thought I's share my experience and prevent others from troubles.
I just don't understand why items (that previously existed in iMovie) are no longer appearing due to Yosemite upgrade.

  • 8mm iphone app clips are laggy in iMovie 11

I am making a cheap music video for my band.  Over the past couple of months, I've been taking some video of various things with the 8mm iphone video app.  Now I am editing the clips in iMovie 11.  Importing and exporting seem to work just fine.  But at the beginning of some clips (usually ones that are a little longer, over 2 seconds)  there is a little hiccup lasting just a fraction of a second.  No matter how I edit them, and even when I export the whole project, those clips do the same thing.  My computer is a brand new mac mini running 10.7.3, so that can't be the issue.  Just to compare, I also looked at the clips in my other, much older mac mini with a much earlier version of iMovie.  Same thing!  So I figure, it must be some kind of encoding error, right?  I noticed that the red progress indicator thingy in iMovie 11 also jumps a little when there's a corresponding hiccup in the video itself.  Lastly, I took one of the offending clips out of iMovie and just played it regularly on the desktop with Quicktime.  As the clip was starting up, again, there was that little hiccup.  Any ideas?  I'm kinda desperate.  It's looking really good otherwise, and it'll break my heart a little to have to start from scratch.  ps: the 8mm iphone app video is in .MOV format.  Thanks!

OK. If you had real 8MM film, it would be playing at 18 fps and this app seems to be approximating that. However, when you use in an iMovie project, your timeline will be either 30fps, 25fps, or 24 fps, so iMovie must convert.
One thing that may help is to right click on the Event and see if it allows you to optimize media.

  • I'm having problems with iMovie - some of the video clips are black and can't watch them

  • Are clip filenames accessible in iMovie 11?

My past video editing has been in Final Cut Express and FCP 5. I'm playing with iMovie 11 to get some sense of the new video paradigm that Apple is adopting, and have some questions about the way iMovie handles clips. I don't see my clip filenames anywhere in the event browser, and can't find any way to access them.  I've got a lot of video I'd like to import into iMovie and manage there, and being able to see the filenames is important to me. Is there a way to turn them on in iMovie, or am I just out of luck?
If I move my iMovie 11 library to a different drive can I just point iMovie to the new drive and retain the existing event and keyword organization, or does it need to be organized again from scratch? And if I do import my video library into iMovie, organizing it into events, assigning keywords, etc., and later decide to get FCPX, will that organization carry over into FCPX or will it need to be redone?
    Ralph

iMovie uses a visual editing paradigm that is based on a copy and paste desktop metaphor, as opposed to the old FCP7 and FCE which provided edit decision lists and a scotch tape and razor blade metaphor. By this I mean that iMovie enforces you to copy and paste a logical clip. In older iMovie versions and legacy FCP, you could set an In point independent of setting an Out point. (razor blade).
So there is no list of clips in iMovie 11. If you click VIEW/PLAYHEAD INFORMATION, you will see the date and time of the footage as you skim. If you right-click on a clip in a project or an event, you can select REVEAL IN FINDER and you will see the clip name. iMovie interprets the clip name from most cameras to get the date and time metadata, so if you change the clip name, it loses the metadata. Interestingly, in FCPX, you can still see clip names and see a list of clips, and even rename clips if you want.
Your question about moving the iMovie library to a different drive is a little complicated. For iMovie 11, if you have imported EVENTS, and have never used them in a PROJECT, you can easily move the Event folder on your internal drive to an external drive in the FINDER. The external drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled) a.k.a. HFS+.  Firewire and USB will both work fine. (Except if you are importing DV from a tape based camera - then you must have firewire, but once it is imported, USB is fine.) If you move it manually in the Finder, you must move it to the iMovie Events folder at the top level of the drive. Any other place, iMovie will not see it.
It gets more complicated if you have used the Event footage in a Project. In this case, you can still move it to the external drive, but you must do the move within iMovie. An iMovie project does not contain any actual footage. It references the footage that you imported into an Event folder. So a project consists of a list of hexadcimal instructions containing the paths to the even clips, the in and out points, paths to photos, instructions for titles, cropping, transitions, paths to music, etc.  If you move your Event folder outside of iMovie, these paths in the project will be orphaned.
To move an Event within iMovie, go to the Event Library List view. Click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK, and you should see all your properly formatted disks in the library. Hold down the Command Key while dragging the small icon for your Event to the small icon for the Disk in the Event Library List. If you do not hold down the Command Key, it will COPY not MOVE.   You can move PROJECT in the same way in the Project Library List. If you move within iMovie, all project linkages are preserved.
The question about moving to FCX is interesting. You can move your iMovie projects into FCP X very easily. In fact you can leave them intact, and FCP will create a new Event folder that references the physical clips in the iMovie Event folder (but generates new thumbnail files, render files, etc.) This means you can use your Event files in both iMovie and FCPX without doubling the space required. If you have imported DV for example, this works great. Even if you have imported AVCHD, which iMovie transcodes to Apple Intermediate Codec, this works fine.
However, FCPX gives you access to a superior intermediate codec called ProRes 422 which generally retains all the quality of your clips and uses a 4:2:2 color space (as opposed to AIC with a 4:2:0) color space. This will not buy you much with DV, which is already a full i-frame codec. But for AVCHD, you should get a better result if you import into FCPX in ProRes rather than AIC.
If I was going to edit an existing iMovie Project in FCPX, I would either just edit the AIC, or transcode the AIC into ProRes, and then do my edits. However, if I was going to do a project from scratch in FCPX, I would go back to my archive copies of the AVCHD files and import them directly into ProRes 422.
I am not sure if the import to FCP X will preserve your keywords. It might, since FCP X has a similar function, but I would test it first. For my purposes, I have found that keywords generally slow me down, but for a more complex application than mine, they could be important. I am not the one to ask on that.  I did check FCP X Help, and there was no mention of importing iMovie Keywords in the Help files.
I am still learning FCPX so others may have a better idea.
    Hope that helps.

  • Imovie HD clips are all 10 minutes.  This runs shorter clips together and makes editing difficult.

I am using imovie 6 HD.  The clips used to be of the lenght of the shooting time or if it ran over 9 minutes, it would continue in a new clip.  Now, all clips are 10 minutes regardless of how many shots of varying length there are. Makes editing a bit dicey. Any way to get it back to making clips the same length as the shooting time?

Now I know how you equated donmerlin with Bill... I got so flustered with this problem, I ended up forgetting which Apple ID I posted under. Here is an update to the problem.
I really wanted to stay with QT 7.0.3 because the latest DVD Studio Pro requires it (as does iTunes for video playing). I tried to stay with QT 7 and revert back to iMovie 4, but because the old iMovie 4 project file was converted to iMovie HD (and there's not way to go back), I basically had to recreate the iMovie project from scratch. I started to do this, by first creating a new iMovie 4 project, then copying all of the 100's of media files from the other project into this one. Once I realized the magnitude of work involved, figuring out what's what, and which clips are transitions and effects, I knew this was a bad way to go. And chances are, it would have still been a problem, since most of what I've read has to do with QT 7 being the problem. So I changed directions.
I am fortunate enough to have two G4's, so I left QT 7.0.3 on this one, and decided to downgrade QT on my other G4. First I ran the QT 7.0.1 Reinstaller (had to use Pacifist, since the Apple installer refused to let it run). Then I ran the QT 6.5.2 Reinstaller. After that, I opened up the iMovie HD project, and lo and behold, the freezing and staggering playback issues were gone! Words cannot express the feeling of relief I had. In retrospect, I am still quite disappointed that Apple introduced an upgrade to QT that caused this horrible problem, and appears to have done nothing to resolve it. The good news is that I found my way around the problem via the QT downgrade path, and I'll never upgrade QT on this other G4 again. Thanks to everyone in sharing in my grief and posting suggestions (both in response to my post and others).

  • My video clips are just black when i import them to iMovie! (they are mp4) p.s. i have alot of clips

I keep importing all these video files which are mp4 format and they have thumbnail pics but when i hover over them to preview they turn black and i cant see any thing!?
do i have the wrong format or what? I have worked with imovie alot and this has ever happend...
    HELP PLEASE!!

It is possible that the clips are are variant of h.264 that iMovie cannot read.
I would suggest that you get a free tool called MPEG Streamclip from squared 5 dot com.
Drag one of your clips into MPeG Streamclip. The File/Export Using QuickTime. Choose either the Apple Intermediate codec or the h.264 codec.  H.264 will give you a smaller file. Apple Intermediate Codec will give you a larger file but smoother editing performance.
In iMovie, use File/Import Movie to import this new clip.
If that works, then MPEG Streamclip has a batch mode where you can do all the clips at once.

  • Are there longer music clips to use in iMovie you can find online? How to loop current audio?

I have a video that almost 50 seconds long and I can't figure out how to make the clip I am currently using to loop without coming to a full stop in the middle of the video and then start over again about about 5 or 6 sec of silence. Are there websites I can find music clips to use in iMovie that are longer than the ones that come with the application on my iMac? Or how can I make the audio that I am already using loop continously until the end of the video?
    Thanks!

If no one answers soon you could try over in the iMovie forum https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/imovie.

  • Can I copy clips from one project to another?  The clips are still frames captured within a video event.

Can I copy clips from one project to another?  The clips are frames saved as stills from a video event.  I try the copy & paste but it does not seem to work.

The video was converted into MP4 and then I could get it into iMovie events.  I had right clicked and saved farmes as stills.  ABout 50 of them,  When I tried to copy and paste those stills into another project I couldn't. They came up blank.
I ended up going to a Genius appointment at my APPLE store this afternoon and was told that those "stills" aren't really anything. Not a .jpg or video, so the program doesn't recognize them.  So instead I'm using the Project with the 50 stills and copying other .jpgs and video into it.  (This is for a 1961 Class Reunion, so it's old stuff).  Seems to work so far.
So bottom line seems to be I can use these stills created from a video in the project in which they were created, but no where else.  Do you know a way around this?

  • I have MTS files imported from a Canon HD cam. They import into I movie and I see them in the Finder folders and they preview fine. I have a new project and some of the clips are freezing and some audio is now gone? Do i need a file converter and convert

I have MTS video files that import from a Canon Vixia HF S20 HD camera. I imported into I Movie. They converted into MOV files and I see them in the movies folder in finder. They view fine and run through the events folder in Finder. In I Movie, I created a new project and used a "Theme". The project worked fine at first but then some clips started to freeze and some lost audio. The effected clips are the same in the project library and in the event library, meaning they are froze in both places. As I said when i view through finder the MOV files preview and work fine.  Is this inherent to MTS files using in I movie. SHould i consider using a file converter to convert to MOV files prior to importing into I movie.
I found on Apple support site info that states the MTS files can only be imported through the camera. I am developing my back up procedures and now I am faced with backing up in the original MTS files but not being able to reload if necessary into I movie. Any suggestions?

I'd like to add that after I import these clips without thumbnails, iMovie does give me an error and say that they could not be imported. No explanation as to why, though. Again, they play fine on my camera.

  • In iPhoto, how can I find the videos which are used in iMovie?

My overall goal is to split my iPhoto library, because it's taking up half my HD. (Proud dad, taking too many burst photos and videos of the little guys). I'll put the videos and older-year photos onto an external drive.
Problem is - I can't figure out which iPhoto video clips are in my Huge Home Movie, which has about 5 minutes from every month from 2008-2011.
Is there a way that I can find them? Perhaps I can flag or rate them in iMovie? Perhaps a smart album in iPhoto?
    Details:

In imovie, I cannot get the video clips to transfer to imovie to add to my project to my dismay. The photos easily transferred but not the video clips. A sample clip is named mov04914.mpg. Could it be a file type issue?
I have followed the tutorials- when I click in Iphoto videos in the Even Library list: nothing is listed. I have even exported to the desktop and tried to import from there- it won't allow me to select it.
    HELP!!

I have followed the tutorials- when I click in Iphoto videos in the Even Library list: nothing is listed. I have even exported to the desktop and tried to import from there- it won't allow me to select it.
iMovie '08 only imports what it can edit. Other files are ignored. Muxed compression formats like MPEG-1 are not editable in iMovie. Convert them using a third-party, MPEG-based application like iSquint (free), MPEG Streamclip (free), FFmpegX (donation-ware), Visual Hub (pay-ware), or similar application.

I am using final cut express 4. It seems that any clip over a certain length, say 5 min, does not fully transfer! All shorter clips are perfectly fine. Is there some reason why longer clips are not fully transferred? (a half blue circle shows up on the transfer list, indicating that the clip was not fully transferred. When I check in the capture scratch folder, sure enough the whole clip is not there!
Is there some glitch in final cut express that only allows short clips to be transferred in full?

Thanks for the reply. I'll try to answer all the questions (I am a relative novice). Your help is appreciated.
By the way, the other reply I received suggested the following:
In Final Cut Express>System Settings>Scratch Discs make sure the Limit Capture/Export File Segement Size To: is not checked.
I did this and it was already unchecked. So this is not the answer...
The strange thing is, I have been logging and transferring with FCE for 2 yrs without any problems at all with shorter clips, but have come up against the problem with long clips (over 5 or so min)  the whole time. I got around it by simply making sure I stopped recording after less than 5 min while shooting footage. OR if I accidentally got a long clip, I import into imovie and then import into FCE. Not very streamline and I worry about compressions altering quality!
I am now trying to import a 20 min and a 17 min clip and it only transfers around 3 minutes of each, I have re-tried several times and it happens repeatedly. The blue circle in the transfer list shows up as a half blue circle instead of full. Clip cuts off after 3 or so minutes.
