Screensaver and iPhoto library OS X 10.9.2

I just updated the OS X 10.9.2 on my MacBook. Now the screensaver doesn't work with iPhoto library anymore. It only allows me to select a folder elsewhere on the computer, but not the iPhoto library. I used to have the flagged photos as my screensaver. Is that just not possible anymore?

You probably have to run one or all of the IPHOTO resets/repairs over your library. Its in IPHOTO help which keys you have to hold down while opening IPHOTO.
Sorry don't remember which keys.

Common itunes and iphoto library across many apple devices & users using AExtreme?

Is it possible to maintain a common itunes library and iphoto library shared across multiple users and multiple devices in a home via airport extreme or via airport express and a NAS?

i realized that an itunes library folder is different from an itunes media folder although the later resides in the former. turns out while each user account with apple should have its own library they can point to the same media folder.
right now i have my dad and my itunes library on my mac point to the same media folder inside /Users/Shared and that way we are able to access the same music and movies for our iphones and ipads.
i guess now all we need to do is move this to a network drive and make itunes point there.

About Safari cache and iPhoto library fragmentation...

Some days back, with the help of iDefrag I found out that my entire HD was badly fragmented inspite of having 95GBs free space. So I decided to do what an average mac user does to fix this... I backed up everything my my TM drive and restore the entire from there. Then I ran iDefrag and things were neat. A lot of my speed related issues are not solved.
However, I do notice that Safari cache and iPhoto library are always reported as fragmented portions on the HD by iDefrag. Infact, I often see the colored ball - wait indicator when switching tabs in safari or when I work with photos in iPhoto. I dont mind clearing the cache of safari. i'm somewhat worried about my iPhoto library. I have all my personal and family pics in one library as thats easier to maintain.
I just want to know what is the ideal thing for a mac user to do here...
PS: noticed that even linux virtual disk of vmware is completely fragmented, which i made after i restored with TM.

Watch your CPU usage via the +Activity Monitor+ app (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
When it starts, select either +All Processes+ or +Active Processes+ in the toolbar, and sort the list by the +% CPU+ column, so the highest numbers are on top, and select the CPU tab towards the bottom.
For this purpose, also select +View > Update Frequency > Less Often+ from the Menubar.
Various processes will "spike" up and down normally as they do things, then are idle, so you need to watch it for a while and get a feel for the processes that are using the most CPU, and the +% Idle+ at the bottom.
When the slowdown occurs, see if something changes significantly, especially if the +% idle+ goes to near zero. If that happens, see what process(es) are using the most CPU.
If the process(es) involved aren't familiar to you, post their names here (and or check this out: http://triviaware.com/macprocess/all)
You may also want to select the +System Memory+ tab towards the bottom. Keep an eye on the total of Free and Inactive memory (if they're near zero, you may need more), and the +Page outs+ (if that's high, it's another indication you may need more memory).

Share one iTunes and iPhoto library between 2 computers

I have a network with an iMac and a G5 and I'd like to use a ethernet hard drive to store a common iTunes music and iPhoto library so either computer uses the same files and isn't depending upon the other computer being turned on (so I think this rules out a firewire or USB external drive). Any suggestions. Both computers would need read/write access to the ethernet hard drive. Thanks.

If you turn on iTunes sharing in the network settings and then point each copy of iTunes to that ethernet HD, it should be fine.

How can I use one external hard drive for both Time Machine and iPhoto Library?

I have been using a 1 TG LaCie external hard drive for Time Machine backups. My (older) Mac has 160 GB and is almost full. I would like to move my iPhoto Library to the external hard drive, but I've heard Time Machine doesn't share one space well. Should I
1. create another partition (but will this erase what I've already saved) with Disk Utility? *I am running Snow Leopard*
2. create another volume to use for iPhoto, and if so, should the two volumes be of equal size?
3. leave it with one partition and move the iPhoto Library to the same partition with Time Machine back ups?
I know I don't need the entire 1 TG for back up of 160 GBs. Please advise the best path to take. Thank you!

You are getting incorrect information from your ASP. If you look at drive specifications the heat generated is no different for high vs low capacity drives.
I have upgraded the internal drive in my iMac 2007 with a 3TB Hitachi drive without any heat issues or other problems.
Larger hard drives have higher density platters so to access any given amount data the drives travel a shorter distance. Higher capacity drives should therefore run cooler than lower density drives because the drive spends less time spinning to access data.

New iMac or new Mac Mini... and iPhoto Library separate drive?

I have a 2007 iMac Intel Core Duo 2.4Ghz (4 meg RAM) with a hard drive in need of repair, according to Disk Utility (and repeated by DriveGenius 3.) The Repair option is not available. I have had occasional difficulty with this particular Mac, and this is actually my second hard drive,and it is out of warranty. I had already planned to replace this computer later this year.
In attempting to download and install Lion OS, the install failed, and the computer became essentially inoperable. I was able to use Time Machine to get it back running, but cannot repair what is surely a damaged HD. Apple Support came to the same conclusion.
I have become interested in a few goals: (1) To purchase a Mac Mini along with an Apple Thunderbolt monitor (when available) in order to separate my CPU from my monitor. (2) I want to separate my media files from a CPU hard drive for safety, for the very problem I am experiencing now. (3) I want to make my iPhoto library and iMovie library available to my wife – perhaps on an external dedicated drive - for her newer iMac, to various iPhones and iPads, and to two Apple TV units.
We have a home network with an Airport Extreme, and several Ethernet outlets. Both iMac’s currently use Western Digital external drives for Time Machine backups. I have another external Seagate drove solely for my iMovie files. I just purchased a Time Capsule 2TB (but have not yet opened) with the idea that this would be where the “shared” iPhoto library resides.
My questions –
Would you recommend using a Mac Mini + monitor, or go with a new iMac (my current iMac is my third and the only one that has given me some problems.) I do not have any specialized use of my computer beyond the common iLife applications.
I want my photos and videos to be easily available to my family on their Apple devices (I’m the only one with the significant family photo library) and I haven’t quite devised a plan to accomplish that. Can you make suggestions?

Currently the Library is on EHD 1 and you want to copy it to EHD2?
Connect them both to the iMac. Make sure EHD2 formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and drag the iPhoto Library from EHD 1 to EHD 2
To open either Library with iPhoto 11: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
It will update the Library to the new formats. Remember once you do this the older versions of iPhoto will no longer be able to read it.

Hard drive to airport extreme for time machine and iPhoto library

Can I buy an external hard drive and connect to my airport extreme to be used to host my iPhoto library. Meaning that no mater what Mac I upload an image to iPhoto in, it is referencing the same library on an external drive.

While you can do this as Kappy points out, there a few details that you might want to consider before you make the move.
1) Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme are not supported by Apple. While this does seem to work for some users, others (like me) have difficulty with corruption issues. The bottom line is that this is not a reliable method to back up your important data....and, no support or help from Apple if you do have difficulties.

2) If you move the iPhoto library to the hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme....your original or master library now resides on that disk.....and you have no backup for the library.....when, not if.....the drive has a problem.
3) You might want to post in the iPhoto forum to ask if it is still an iPhoto requirement that only one user at a time can have iPhoto open with the shared library arrangement.

Time Machine and iPhoto library move

Hi,
I've been mulling over moving my iPhoto library (85gb) to an external drive for a while now to save some space on my iMac's internal drive. I wondered what affect this might have on my Time Machine backup as my TM drive has only 8gb available. Now, I know TM will delete old backups to free up space but I wondered if TM would even see this as new data because I will be pointing iPhoto to the new library, so will TM backup the entire 87gb, or will it see it as the same library and only backup new, or changed data from now on?
I haven't been able to find an answer to this so I just decided to go ahead and do it, and, I'm confused. I now have an old iPhoto library on my internal drive which is no longer used and will be deleted in due course, and a new, current library on my external drive. I included the volume in the TM prefs and started a backup.
TM came up with this: 29/10/2013 16:08:06.573 com.apple.backupd: 192.08 GB required (including padding), 8.14 GB available
Why does it require 192gb? it then preceeded to (slowly) delete older backups, freeing up a small amount of space with each one. After deleting about 15 backups, I stopped it cos I didn't like where it was going.
Then, I decided to exclude the new volume just to see what would happen. This time it said: 29/10/2013 18:16:48.085 com.apple.backupd: 101.39 GB required (including padding), 31.81 GB available
Where has this 100gb come from?
Edit: I have just noticed that I renamed the old library to differentiate it from the new one. Would that have triggered TM to backup the whole library again? Even if that's the case, that's 85gb, plus the new volume, another 85gb, totalling 170gb. So why did it need 192gb for both and 100gb for one?
Not sure what to do now as I don't really want to lose too many more old backups.
Can anybody help me work this out? And, once worked out, will TM allow me to 'go back' in iPhoto to restore from previous backups?

Yes I'm aware of the Pondini site and its extremely helpful, but in this case it doesn't answer my question.
To update the original post, I renamed my old library back to 'iPhoto Library' and, I guess, because it hadn't completed a backup of the library with the 'iPhoto Library - Old' name, it the potential 100gb backup reverted back down to around 7gb.
So, lesson learned; do not rename the iPhoto library.
My question that remains is will the iPhoto library on the external drive offer the incremental backups in time that the original library did? Or will I effectively lose all those backups?

Applications and iPhoto Library folders not in backup

My iMac G5 disk failed some time ago and was replaced by a new drive. I had been doing system backups via TM so was not concerned about being able to rebuild the system. However, when the new drive was initialized, I made the mistake of specifying a different account name from the original and doing a clean rebuild from the Leopard DVD. This resulted in not being able to access the TM backups but I got around the problem by creating a new account matching the original.
I was able to retrieve most files from the backup this way, but cannot see any backups of either the Applications folder or the iPhoto library in TM. I have gone back to look at all the old versions but still cannot see either of these folders. It's possible that I had excluded these folders from the backups, but I don't usually do silly things like that. My question is: can I go back through the old backups and examine the TM Prefs in use at the time to see if I had (stupidly) excluded those folders?
I've looked in the System folder and all I can see is a file in System>Library>PreferencePanes>TimeMachine.prefPane which I cannot figure out how to view.

I think I had excluded them from the first TM backup in the interests of space saving (I had copied the iPhoto folder to a different volume - later deleted!). Then I made the mistake of not changing the exclusion list when I needed to. It's probably a good idea to visit these prefs regularly to make sure they are what you want and not just left there by forgetfulness.
And also to double-check what's actually getting backed-up after you change them; on occasion the plist gets corrupted and doesn't get changed to agree with what you did. There's either no message, or folks don't see or understand it.
Glad you were able to recover -- most folks aren't.
It's an excellent strategy to have another set of backups of important stuff, and even better, to have it off-site, so you're also protected against fire, flood, theft, direct lightning strike, etc. For most of us, things like photos can be archived to CD/DVD occasionally, and taken to a safe deposit box, relative's house, workplace, etc. Others use a portable external disk, some do some backups via the net.

Moving Events and iPhoto library to a new Mac

I just picked up a new Mini for my HTPC. I would like to move the Events and photos that I already have on my other Macs to the new one. I exported all of the photos to a flash drive and then imported them in on the new Mini, but of course it just imported the photos. It did not organize them at all.
Bottom line, is there any way to move my existing library over to a new Mac without having to re-label all events and stuff like that?

I lost my iphoto Library when I was moving all my files over to my Mac Mini. I had a clean mini with Leopard and had my photo library on my external only. I was messing around with the Time machine and i think it did a back up which I stopped right away, but I think it deleted the iPhoto library and my iTunes library.(the mini probably had an empty iPhoto library) So now I used Data rescue to try and find it and all of the files from that external are on my mini's desktop with just numbered jpeg files & mp3 files.One folder says recovered music & recovered pictures. Of course there is nothing that says iphoto library and all the files are so mixed up.I have been going thru all the photos and just dragging them in, but it is getting so tedious....Help! Oh, and the photos are very pixelaed now....would that be because they are just jpeg files....I am not sure if they were prior to this whole problem. I have a feeling there is no way around this. Copy iTunes and iPhoto library to new air mac

I've just bought a new air mac. I have my entire music and photo library on my imac - which is running snow leopard. I back the imac up to a 1tb time machine.
I tried to use migration assistant over wireless to migrate info to my air mac but this failed - as expected over wireless.
I ideally want to copy over itunes, iphoto , files and folders and my windows for mac to the air mac and retain them on my imac.
Is there an easy way to copy my information to my new air mac ?
There seems to be lots of hacks and options but I'm not usre which is the best way ?

Your iPhoto library is located in the /Home/Pictures/ folder. If you've already migrated the home folder then everything has been moved including the iTunes library which is in the /Home/Music/ folder.

BUG: iPhoto 9 Slideshow - Text Slide Bugs and iPhoto Library Corruption

I was wondering if anyone else has run into the following issues:
I have had multiple issues with iPhoto crashing, stop responding, and database corruption where I cannot open iPhoto. These issues all began when I tried to use the new themed slideshow in iPhoto v9.1. Previously, I had only used iPhoto to create basic slideshows with iPhoto v7.x. I was hoping that I would be able to create my masterpiece in iPhoto 11 (v9.1) but I have only been frustrated by my attempts so far.
What should have been a 3 - 4 hour operation has become a 20 hour nightmare and I still don't have a slideshow to show for my efforts. This has been one of my most disappointing uses of Apple software ever.
Repeatable, reproducible bugs that I have run into include:
1. Deleting a photo that appears in the timeline before a sub-title causes havoc with subsequent sub-titles (a.k.a. Text Slides). Subsequent subtitles are randomly copied to pictures following the one it was assigned to. Further, there is no subtitle icon in the timeline and the photos have to be manually modified to eliminate the subtitle. Work around is click the "Text Slide" button
2. Zooming and/or image placement is not preserved and not visible when previewed, exported, or iPhoto is closed and then reopened.
3. The iPhoto Library becomes corrupt and permissions problems prevent me from working with my photos. This happens while working on slideshow. I have had to rebuild my library and repair permissions no less than five times since I started working on my slideshow.

iPhoto's slideshow feature is fine but no tool for a "masterpiece".
Alternatives to iPhoto's slideshow include:
iMovie, on every Mac sold, as is iDVD.
Others, in order of price:

PulpMotion $129
FotoMagico $29 (Home version) ($149 Pro version, which includes PhotoPresenter)
Final Cut Express $199
It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs.
However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Express is the most capable app of them all. You get what you pay for.

Duplicate Photos and iPhoto Library Sharing

My first question is about sharing my iPhoto library. I would like to buy a Time Capsule to back up all of my computers. I've been told not to use that to store all of my pictures, only to use it for backups. I wish there were an easy way to share my iPhoto library between users on the same computer, and combine libraries between computures. If you know of any easy solution to this please let me know. Most of my pictures are on my iMac with one account. My macbook pro has two accounts set up. I'd like to be able to put them all in the same place, or at least select many to have in just one account for all users to access. Is there an easy way to do that? Could I connect a USB hard drive to my Time Capsule soly for iPhoto? My other question is, when I put pictures in my account iPhoto, and then put the same pictures into my wife's account on the same computer (because she'd like to see them also,edit them ect.) am I using twice as much space on my hard drive?

For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

Yes... but.
Would this be a wired or wireless connection to the Library? WIred is fine. Wireless is fine for viewing.
However: A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.
