Screensaver configuration problem with lost iPhoto library

Hi,  I justed switched my macbook and I used to have another iPhoto library in an external HD that is now gone. I cannot configure the screensaver, I think it searches for my lost iPhoto library and cannot select my current pictures. Can someone help me with this problem? Thanks.

If the rebuild doesn't help try Fix 101:  make a temporary, backup copy of the library if you don't already have a backup copy and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
     User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
     User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • Im having a problem with my iphoto library.  all of photos are outlines in gray with black background.

My iphoto library appears as white dotted outlines and black background.  I can only see the photos if i am scrolling?

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Old Toad - help with lost iPhoto Library

I posted in the iPhoto 06 board by mistake, I am actually running 08. I found the iPhoto library in Pictures, but it stopped in July 07, and I seem to have lost a year's worth of photos. Do you have any advice?

    Miriam:
It may be that the photos are still there but that bunch has been lost from the database file. Try the three fixes below in order as needed:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all options.
2 - rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos.
3 - start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open Photo window
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Problem with imported iphoto library

I imported my photo library from an older mac, all photos are there, but when I click on anyone to blow it up I get a giant exclamation mark and no photo. thumbnails are there, but can't view photos. Some permissions problem? Thanks
    Patrick

It is odd because the photo is visible for an instant before the ! shows up.
    That's just a cached image.
    Alternative:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Problem with rebuilding iPhoto library

    Hi,
I'm having problem to rebuild my iPhoto library. I have more than 11 000 photos / video clips and 70Gbs in my iPhoto library and everything has been ok until I started to import photos from my new iPhone 4. First issue was that when I imported photos from iPhone those new photos disappeared after restart of iPhoto. I read from somewhere that iPhoto library rebuild -functions might help and I rebuild the library and thumbnails. It actually worked for that problem. After that those photos which I imported from iPhone remained in iPhoto and I even got some disappeared photos back. But after that rebuilt I noticed that most of the video clips could not be opened inside iPhoto. When clicking thumbnail of a video clip just a big exclamation mark jumped up. I checked from iPhoto library originals -folder that those video clips still remain. From there I can open the clips in Quicktime Player. So, I tried to rebuild my library again. Rebuilding started ok, it went smoothly up to 65% but ceased there. Now it has been in that 65% -condition for 24 hours and I don't know what to do. I don't know if it's still actually doing something or not. "Force to quit" -function does not say that iPhoto is not answering and "System Monitoring" shows that there are still some messages going on in iPhoto -process. I don't know should I force iPhoto to quit or just wait another 24 hours...
Any advices what I should do and how I can get my video clip viewing back to iPhoto?
Computer is iMac 2006 with OS 10.6.8 and iPhoto is version 9.1.5. I have both Quicktime players (7 and 10) installed.

  • Problems with burning iPhoto library to DVD

When I try to burn my iPhoto library to a DVD, iPhoto eventually always crashes.
iPhoto will prepare to burn and the window to select output drive, spee, etc. will com up. After clicking on "burn", iPhoto is always end.
    What could be wrong?
Is my iPhoto library maybe corrupted?
If yes, can I do something about it?
    Infos:
iBook G4, 640 RAM, HD 30GB (3.72 available), OSX Tiger, external LACIE d2 DUAL DVD+-RW DRIVE, iPhoto library: 3.53 GB
    Thanks for any help!

    Hi iRose,
Thanks for giving all your info. Your free space on your hard drive is not enough to do a successful burn of the entire iPhoto Library. Do you have an external drive? Is your drive supported for iPhoto burning? usually on the internal that comes with the computer is supported.
Try instead to burn the entire iPhoto Library folder in the Finder using your external burner.
    Close iPhoto
    I can't burn a Cd or DVD
The next info is from iPhoto FAQ on the Apple site
Question 5: Can I burn a CD or DVD to back up my iPhoto library?
Answer: Yes, you can easily back up your iPhoto library by using the CD burning capabilities of Mac OS X. Simply insert a blank CD into your internal or external CD-RW drive and copy the iPhoto library to the CD icon on your desktop. When you drag the CD icon to the Trash/Eject button in the Dock, you are given the option to burn the CD. Click Burn and the CD is created. To burn a DVD backup of your digital images, use iDVD and a SuperDrive-equipped Mac.

  • Problem with deleting iPhoto Library

I made a backup (several actually) of my current iPhoto 11 (9.1.5) Library, which had 22,000 images, of about 6 MB each.  I then deleted all of the Albums and put all of the photos into Trash.  I emptied iPhoto Trash (that process ended in the beach-ball-of-death twice) but now iPhoto shows no photos in the Library and no photos in Trash.  However, in Finder there has been only a slight (about 3 GB) increase in free disk space.  Also, the computer, a 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo 13" MacBookPro with 4 GB RAM) is now very slow to startup iPhoto.  What did I do wrong?

If you want to "empty" a library simply drag the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder to the trash ans empty it.

  • Problems with copying iPhoto library onto new hard drive from external HELP

I had to get a new hard drive installed onto my MacBook Pro, but was able to copy my iPhoto library onto my external hard drive via another computer before the old hard drive failed. Now, I am trying to copy that library back onto my MacBook.
After I copied the library onto the MacBook, when iPhoto was opened, it showed no photos but I could see album titles. Then when I opened iPhoto while holding down the option key, it was all clumped into one event and not nearly all of the photos were there. Also, I have right-clicked on the library to see package contents and everything seems to be there, but I don't know how to make it all show up in the library.
I've downloaded iPhoto Library Manager because I thought that might help (but haven't used it yet -- don't know how) and I just need some help to recover my iPhoto library... and is there a way to restore all the separate events imported and time/date stamps, in order to get all the photos in chronological order?

Should I just go through the iPhoto Library package contents and drag every folder into iPhoto?
No. That will get you massive duplication.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Problem with rebuilding iPhoto library database

Some of my videos in iPhoto play fine, however, I get the ! sign with some of them when I attempt to play.  I've tried rebuilding the library database, but the process gets stuck at 92% and never completes.  What now?

    Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your

2 - delete the contents the following folder: User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks and Yosemite,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.

  • Problem when renaming iPhoto Library

I recently renamed two iPhoto Libraries. A day later I plugged in my external HDD to do a Time Machine (TM) backup and noticed that TM deleted ALL my previous backups except the last one, stating there was not enough space.
My conclusion is that renaming these libraries caused TM to see them as NEW libraries and wanted to back them up all over again, meaning I needed 40GB of space rather than the 15GB available and let to the deletion of all my previous backups (without warning)!
I have posted about this in the TM forum, but decided to mention it here as well to warn others of this potential problem.

problem when copying iphoto library from ext hd to ext hd. stops after 2 gb saying there was data with same name on target hd. but that one is brandnew and freshly formatted.
How are your external HDs formatted?  Both need to be formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled, not case sensitive) to work with iPhoto.
If the file system differ, you may have problems with ambitious filenames, for example, if one drive is case sensitive and the other not.
