Screensaver of Death

Brand new 13-inch MBP, upgraded ram to 4GB and replaced the HD with the 320GH 7200RPM drive from my previous MBP. Preformed an Archive & Install of the OS, everything works great. The problem is that the Screen-Saver pref pane kills the System Preferences. First, whenever you open it, it always defaults to Flurry. But more pressing is that if you select any other screen saver, the preview stutters severely, becomes unresponsive, beach-balls and eventually locks up the system prefs. Also, if you select any screen saver other than Flurry and click the 'test' button to invoke the full screen saver, it also stutters like in the preview and you will be locked out!! no keyboard or mouse movement will make the screen saver go away. Now, as I said first, I've already performed an Archive & Install of the OS, and removed all 3rd party pref panes just incase there was a conflict - no change. I don't think it's a hardware issue with the new Nvidia 9400 because the interesting thing is, if you navigate to the same quartz screen saver modules in the Finder, the previews play fine! All other video-intensive quartz rendering, like iTunes visuals all play great.

Hi,
I have a feeling that the replacing of the drive with the drive from your previous machine and/or the reinstall has something to do with your problem. Since the hardware on the two machines is not exactly the same, there might be something on the drive left over from the previous machine's installation that may be causing the problem. Also, when you did the reinstall, did you use either the install disk that came with your new machine, or a retail copy of the Leopard DVD? As a test, you could try swapping in the hard drive that originally came with your new machine to see if the problem goes away. If this makes the problem do away, then you might have to do an Erase and Install to get your 320 Gb drive to work.
Hope this helps,
Ken

How can I fix the spinning wheel of death when trying to open the desktop /screensaver icon in system preferences?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
First, open Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and repair permissions.
If it doesn't work, open Finder, select Go menu > Go to Folder, type ~/Library/Preferences, delete "com.apple.desktop.plist" and "com.apple.systempreferences.plist" and restart

  • WindowServer port death causes instant logout

Hi, I've just had my computer instant-logout twice now. Poking around, it seems to be a problem that's been noted on these forums before, the WindowServer crashing. Both times, the event happened when I was on YouTube; it does not happen consistently.
Any idea how to fix it? Has Apple said anything about this problem?
Incidentally, while the Console log claims that a crash report was written to the /DiagnosticReports folder, the folder is presently empty.
    Thank you for your help.

Same problem here. Happened to me a handful of times when I tried waking up my MBP's screensaver after only ~half hour of inactivity. When I try to wake it up, I should get a prompt to authenticate to unlock, but instead the MBP struggles for a moment, and instead of giving me a username/password box, I get kicked over to the log in screen. Digging in the Console log shows many listings for "HIToolbox: received notification of WindowServer event port death", one each for what looks like each of the applications that were open prior to the crash/logout.

  • Can't use my photos as a Slideshow Screensaver!

I have a folder in which I place photos that I want to use in my screensaver - and up 'til a few weeks ago, everything was fine.
But now, when I try to select a slideshow-type screen saver, I get the RaInbow Wheel of Death and a message that says, "Looking for Photos".  The Wheel and the message stay on-screen for hours, as it seems that the **** thing is trying to use ALL of my photos.  I want to use SOME of my photos as a screen saver (as I used to be able to) but now there's no option to select my ScreenSaver folder.
The same thing happened to my Apple TV.
I'm ******.  But I don't know if its my dumbness or some faceless Apple technician's dumbness.
    Kin y'all he'p me?

I just upgraded today from Snow Leopard (OS/X 10.6) to Mountain Lion (OS/X 10.8) and shortly afterwards encountered this problem once I tried to change my slide show.  Machine has iLife '09 on it.  Apparently, Mountain Lion doesn't like showing photos from within the iPhoto '09 directory!  Doesn't make a lot of sense, since it can show the slide show on photos in other directories instead, guess this is a case of Apple trying to give us a nudge to upgrade to iLife '11 in a very unfriendly way!
At any rate, once I realized that the problem might be Mountain Lion going bezerk that an iPhoto '09 photo album is set as screen saver (because in Snow Leopard that was just fine), I went and deleted the screen saver plist files at HomeDir/Library/Preferences/ByHost (the Library subdirectory is hidden now, you need to just use Shift-Command-G and type it in to get there).  Once that was done, I went back into System Preferences and the screen savers plist were re-created as default and I could now pick from the allowable directories.
This is really unprofessional handling by Apple.  Instead of running my VM through the roof in System Preferences (I clearly saw memory in use exceed 20GB while I still had this issue), they should just pop up an error message and stop the process.  And it is still unclear why they will not sign iPhoto '09 as an Apple-approved app. so I could select those albums directly (the periodic reminders to upgrade to iLife '11 from iLife '09 aren't enough nudge?).  There may be a trick using soft links to make the iPhoto '09 raw files available, but I really expected better from Apple products.

  • Mavericks and iPhoto Screensaver

We upgraded to Mavericks- finally- and have quite a large iPhoto library. We enjoy using some photos as desktop and screensaver images. I was successfully able to get the desktop image  to work, but have had no luck with the screensaver. When I open System Preferences and go to Screensaver It points me to the hard drive rather than iPhoto and won't let me change it. Can you give me some guidance on how to proceed? The "whirling circle of death" just whirls and whirls! Thanks for any advice! It may be totally operator error here!
    Thanks!

    Hi Eric,
When I go to the Screensaver option, I see some choices of options. I'm pasting the screenshot below. When I try to choose a photo option- like classic or ken Burns, it just whirls and whirls. Eventually the screen turns black and says it's loading photos- but that was for 10 hours last night! Am I looking in the right place for the source?
    Thanks for your help!

  • Spinning Beach Ball When Trying to Login from Screensaver

This has been an ongoing problem for a couple of years on this Mac Pro, through all versions of OS X 10.4.5 or so to the current 10.4.6. I actually get the same sort of thing, without the beach ball, on my MacBook Pro when trying to bring it out of sleep mode.
Using just the Apple Computer Name screensaver (or any other), a couple of times per month, when I hit the mouse or keyboard to login, there'll be a long delay, and then the beach ball of death appears. Nothing happens after that, but if I don't touch anything, the beach ball eventually goes away, but the screensaver never comes back. Move the mouse and the beach ball comes back.
I can ssh into the system and run terminal commands, including TOP and PS, but nothing revealing in those, but admittedly, I am not sure what to be looking for.
The only way to recover the system is to hold the power key and force a reboot. Usually a sudo reboot or shutdown over ssh will kill the system, but today even that wouldn't work.
My theory is that something running has stalled and the login screen can't activate until that stall is cleared or killed, but what's frustrating is I can't figure out what's stalled, assuming that's even a correct theory. Another possibility is maybe a network share that's mounted is hanging things up for some reason.
These intermittent kinds of problems are maddening.
Is there a console log or ssh terminal command that might be revealing in this circumstance?
    Any ideas?

Wow, I'd forgotten that this thread was even open. Surprised to see responses. I forgot to subscribe to it, so I missed the recent discussions.
The link posted by dhkumd above has a post that talks about deleting some preference files via terminal. I haven't tried that yet, but it looks like I've found a similar solution (deleting a particular preference file) on my system for the time being:
I found this post on MacRumor's forums: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=541964
SOLUTION: Browse to Home>Library>Preferences and drag com.apple.systempreferences.plist to the desktop.
Caused by a corrupt user preferences file. On restart, you may find user settings have defaulted. Set up as desired.
Seems to have worked for me with short runs of screensaver enabled. I will have to see what happens overnight before I declare the problem solved. This seems a bit safer than using terminal to rm files. Dragging a copy to the desktop preserves a backup, using terminal to rm them does not.

  • Screensaver and screensaver prefpan crashing my Mac, can't disable it!

I recently figured out that what's causing my Mac to lock up is the screensaver. If I let the Mac idle until the screensaver kicks in, it goes to a black screen and I can't get out of it. So I opened the screensaver preferences, and that results in a spinning wheel of death (spod), with a force restart the only recourse.
So, I can't let the screensaver kick in, and I can't disable the screensaver either. It's a pickle.
If the system is on the login screen, and the screensaver activates, it works just fine. So it's particular to my user account.
I've searched the forums and found many similar but not identical issues. So far I have seen advised and tried…
    trash com.apple.screensaver.*.plist
    trash com.apple.systempreferences.plist
trash com.apple.desktop.plist (although I couldn't find this to delete)
(above were for files both in ~/Preferences and ~/Preferences/ByHost/)
    Disk Utility; repaired permissions
also repaired disk (even booted into recovery mode to repair on the boot drive)
I'm using the built-in "Floating" theme, and it's pointing at a folder full of small photos. There are 1800 photos in the folder, so I thought moving that folder might help, but it didn't.
When trashing SystemPreferences.plist, at least opening the "Desktop & Screensaver" preference pane starts at Desktop, which at first was fine, until I clicked on Screensaver — then it'd spod. However now it will spod for a while on Desktop, as the thumbnails (for default Apple Desktop pictures) draw incredibly slowly (i.e. 10 minutes to draw a page), then I can scroll down, and repeat the wait-for-it-to-draw. Very odd. If at any time I click on Screensaver though, it'll spod indefinitely (I've left it for hours to see if it wakes up… no joy). And I can't click on the other category in Desktop, Solid Color, to select that. Clicking it does nothing.
I'm really at a loss here. What other preference could be corrupt? What am I missing here?
I think I'll reinstall the OS from the recovery disk tonight. I can't go another day not using my system. But if anyone has any ideas… please chime in.
    OS X 10.9.4, 27" iMac 2.8Ghz i7

So here's a really weird update.
I booted into recovery mode (not for the first time today; I did it to repair disk), with intention of reinstalling the OS.
When I clicked on that, it said "you're not connected to the internet". Now hold on, how could that be. My wifi was on but not connected to my network. I selected it, and it asked for the password. I did NOT enter it, I did NOT connect.
Some tickle in the back of my brain all day has said "this is a network issue" but I can't even think of why.
So I rebooted without proceeding with the OS reinstall. I verified that I was connected to the internet, and I was. OK, so that must have been a fluke in the Recovery mode.
But just to be sure I opened the Desktop & Screen Saver prefs, and guess what — everything worked fine.
I even put my folder of photos back where it belongs, re-pointed the screen saver at it, and it's working.
So, ***. I know I had internet earlier on that Mac when it started crashing. I was looking up recovery ideas on it. But somehow, just clicking on install new OS, even though I didn't do it at all, tickled something and now it works.
We'll see how it is in the morning, and I'll install the update Greg recommended anyway, but man this is WEIRD.

  • Is there a way to create a custom screensaver with pics/slides that display for different amounts of time?

Is there a way to create a custom screensaver with pics/slides that display for different amounts of time? Or even add a "video slide" into the screensaver?
My business has 3 TVs displayed in our lobby, each with its own apple TV and they are all linked to the same photo stream. Currently the Atv screensaver displays the photostream pictures of our products for the default 3 seconds. We just added pics/slides that now display messages and useful info for our customers but I want that info to be displayed for a longer period of time than the pictures to give people a chance to read it.
I tried using flickr and powerpoint as a work around but no luck.  I created a slide in powerpoint with play length of 15 secs and saved it as a wmv file.  I added that file to a "screensaver" set in flickr and pointed the Atv screensaver to that flickr set.  It still displays everything, pics and the wmv file at the default 3 sec.
I know I can increase the duration of all pics in the screensaver to display for longer but the goal is to have the pics display at 3 secs and the info slides to display at 15 secs.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    No that's not possible.
If you have any suggestions that you think might enhance the Apple TV you can send Apple your feedback here

  • Error 13 = Blue Screen of Death?

Thought I'd try this board and see if anyone knows anything about 'error 13' and Panther.
I have been plagued by this error message which pops up whenever I try to print from either of my printers or burn a CD. This all happened after I tried to load a demo version of Adobe Illustrator CS2.
Over the last day I have tried the following:
    * deleted the apple.com.print preferences
    * reset the PRAM
    * unplugged, unpowered and restarted the printers and their USB connections
    * deleted the printers from the print setup utility and tried to reinstall them (but there too I get the 'error 13' message. Printers won't load but they do show up as if they loaded. Just won't work, that's all.
    * tried logging in as a new user, and then the printer message is "Not enough RAM" to print.
    * repaired the disk permissions from the CD
Generally I've done everything I can think of... except to reload the OS, which I hesitate to do because I have to first load Jaguar, then the Panther update, then the other updates. Last time I tried that things didn't quite work out.
I do have an external backup drive, which also got corrupted as I tried loading the Adobe Illustrator CS2 on that disk too. Dumb I know...
So... anyone know what 'error 13' means?
Is 'error 13' the Mac equivalent of the Windows Blue Screen of Death?
    Thanks for any input...

    Hello Pawel,
I have looked over the service request you mentioned about acquiring 2 PCIe-6537 at 20MHz sampling rate on all 32 lines. In order to narrow down this issue, I think it would be best to try only acquire from both cards without doing any triggerring etc. Also when performing this test, I would only want to acquire from 8 channels on both cards to see if this reproduces it. If this works, we can slowly add more elements to narrow down what the issue is and make us more effective to solve the problem.
I also wanted to ask if you have tried this setup on another machine and if it worked.
Along with this, have you tried to create two Digital Tasks in MAX and try to acquire for the same amount of time to see if the issue reoccurs here? This would tell us if this problem is connected to the driver/computer or LabVIEW.

  • Ipod crashes windows (blue screen of death)

Hi all. A bit of background info:
A couple of months ago the hard drive crashed on my friends computer. They had to reinstall their OS. Thankfully they had made backups of most everything and were able to get most things reinstalled successfully.
Now they are using a 15g ipod connected through a firewire port on an HP laptop. They do not have a USB adaptor, so gotta go with the FW.
Anyway, when they connect the ipod the computer completely crashes to the blue screen of death and does the physical memory dump. There is an error message, something along the lines of a driver issue.
I know this is vague information, but any pointers on how to proceed in troubleshooting this would be greatly appreciated, thanks
    Frost

    hi Frostine!
Anyway, when they connect the ipod the computer completely crashes to the blue screen of death and does the physical memory dump. There is an error message, something along the lines of a driver issue.
we can sometimes narrow this down a bit by checking on the numerical and text codes showing up with the blue screen. (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm checking on:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
can you get that information for us from their PC?

  • Windows Vista Crashing When Ipod is Plugged In. Blue Screen of Death?

A week ago, my computer suddenly started to reboot whenever I plugged my 5th generation 80 gig Ipod in to sync. A blue screen will pop up, and automatically restart.
I do not believe this is the blue screen of death that appeared 2 months ago. I have upgraded to Itunes 8.0.1 when it was first released, and I had no problems until a week ago. I haven't heard of anyone receiving the blue screen of death since the update to Itunes 8 was released.
I have also lost all of my music from my Ipod, so I am anxious to figure this out.
Here is what the blue screen (certain passages paraphrased, the specifics were copied directly):
A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
    BADPOOLHEADER
If this is the firs time you've seen this stop error screen, restart yoru computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Make sure all hardware and software is properly installed
If it continues, disable/remove any newly installed hardware and software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shawoding. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 for Advanced Sartup options, then select safe mode.

Have you tried the troubleshooting advice in this article?

  • Blue Screen of Death When opening iTunes.

I am at a loss. For the past six months I have been trying to figure out why my computer has a blue screen of death and then restarts "nearly" everytime i open iTunes. The "nearly" is what's driving me nuts because every once in a while it will open ONCE and then start crashing again. I don't even do anything to help it open it just miraculously works every now and then. It even craches the comp when starting iTunes in safe mode. The blue screen error says "Page Fault in non-paged area". iTunes worked fine for months before this randomly started happening. I have tried every solution I have seen, even ones that weren't for my problem. So far I have:
Manually uninstalled iTunes and QT and reinstalled the standalone QT then iTunes.
Disabled itunes helper and ipod service before starting.
Disabling all other services and start-up items.
Installed current bios and drivers (as far as I can tell)
    Installed current windows installer.
    Updated microsoft products including .net
    Updated Java runtime environment
    Replaced ram
I have a pentium 4 1.6ghz with soyo mobo and a RAID card(mirrior) set-up. 1 gig of pc133 ram. I can ul the minidump if needed.
I figured out how to load my podcasts on my ipod manually but I want to get a video ipod so I need itunes. PLEASE HELP!!
      Windows XP

there's a few more things worth checking on. but let's also capture a minidump of the crash and send it to someone who can interpret minidumps.
To set up your machine to capture a minidump, right click on "My Computer", select "Properties", select the "Advanced" tab, select the "Startup and Recovery" Settings button, select "small memory dump" from the popup. When it crashes, look for the MiniDump file. It's usually in the folder "C:\WINDOWS\Minidump" and is called something like Mini<number>-<number>.dmp.
send it to this email address
in the email, put the URL to this discussion thread, so that whoever gets it has some context. Also give as much information about the context of the crash (in the email) as you can.

  • Blue Screen of death - now can't load Windows (even in safe mode)

Last night laptop (Satellite L500 19Z; Win 7 64 bit) crashed whilst playing CIV4. Got a blue screen of death; before I had chance to read any of the error messages on it the machine rebooted.
It loaded windows in safe mode fine then, and informed me as it had loaded safe mode OK the problem will be related to some recently installed software and I should uninstall programs I'd installed until it would load normally. As it was late last night I shut down and thought I'd sort it in the morning (in retrospect this may have been a mistake ....).
Today, when the machine tries to boot up it attempts a Startup Repair; unfortunately this fails every time and it says "Startup repair has tried several times but still cannot detemine the cause of the problem"
I looked at the log it produces but it passes all the individual tests.
I also can't access the advanced options for system recovery & support, which appears on the Startup Repair dialog box as it demands I be logged in, which apparently I'm not (presumably as the machine never got to the windows login screen before trying the startup repair). The error message reads "you must be logged in to access system recovery options. If you are having trouble logging in please contact your computer administrator for assistance. please click OK to restart the computer."
I've had a go at booting into the various advanced options (safe mode, safe mode with command prompt etc. but the outcome is the same).
I also tried the Repair your Computer option from the advanced boot options screen, but after the screen where it asks you to choose the language and keyboard, I get the same login error mentioned above.
Is there a way to repair or even run the hard disk based windows recovery (haven't got the recovery DVD with me as I'm away from home for a couple weeks) without logging into windows? I would have expected there to be but have yet to figure out how to do it.
(there are no disks in the disk drive, no other devices attached to the laptop - I've tried it with mains power and with the battery and have not noticed any differences)
    Thanks
    James

Normaly the reinstall data is on a separate part on your HD, not in Windows.
The register is only used for Windows.
If it doesn't work you can always try to reinstall from a DVD later.
It does mean all your data on C:\ will be gone. If you can hook your HD on an other PC you can try to safe your work with a recover prog.

  • Blue screen of death when connecting ipod or running itunes

  • Blue screen of death on Toshiba P755-S5375 with ADOBE ENCORE CS6

I recently purchased a new laptop and installed Adobe Master Collection CS6.  I purchased the laptop for video capture and editing, as well as for blu-ray authoring.
Unfortunately, although the computer and software works fine for video capture and editing, I am unable to author a blu-ray.  For authoring, I am using Adobe’s Encore CS6.  After checking and previewing my creation, I attempt to build to disc using Encore.  About 2 seconds after clicking the build disc in Encore, I get the “blue screen of death” (BSOD).  This happens every time I try to build to blu-ray (only blu-ray has this issue; I am able to build to a DVD).  I am using an external blu-ray drive on USB 3.0.
I am using Encore version 6.0.0.492
Here are the blu-ray drive specs:
Logitec USB 2.0/3.0 Bus powered portable bluray drive unit, LBD-PME6U3VBK

We need to know the Stop code on the blue screen. If there is a file name mentioned, we want that too.
You can prevent the rapid disappearance of the blue screen during a normal boot by choosing this at the F8 Startup menu.
Disable automatic restart on system failure
