Screensaver on my iMac OS X 10.6.8 refuses to deactivate

Screensaver keeps turning on after an idle period of a few minutes. This occurs despite the fact that the screensaver option in System Preferences, in all user accounts, is set to "Never come on", and computer sleep & monitor sleep are set to "Never turn off" in the Energy Saver option. Also doesn't seem to matter if user accounts are logged on or off. Otherwise, screensaver appears to work properly when it does come on - it disappears at a mouse click or key tap. Anyone know what might be going on, and how I can get the screensaver function to go away? This screensaver "quirk" is a big nuisance!

Those settings are stored in the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file residing in /Library/Preferences/SystemtConfiguration, so move it to the Desktop, restart, and reset the Energy Saver prefPane settings. If that fixes the issue, then delete the moved file.

  • Screensaver freezes my imac

I have a Mac OS X version 10.4.11 and every time my screensaver activates and I move my mouse to deactivate it, my computer freezes and I have to reboot. Any solutions to this problem, or why this is happening? Thanks!

    ScreenSavers use lots or resources.
One reason could be that your earlier iMac has less than 1GB of RAM or that your Hard Drive is getting full. The second less pleasant reason is that your Hard Drive is starting to show signs of age.
Disable the ScreenSaver and check to see how much free space is left on your hard Drive? If you have less than 15% then you really need to free up some space on it. Some other options include upgrading the RAM, replacing the Hard Drive or the Computer.

  • Screensaver remains in 'Flurry' modus

I have a difficult problem with my screensaver (on my iMac 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM). Since I have upgraded to Snow Leopard I can't switch off the option 'Use random screen saver'. When I swich it off. I automaticly turns on. I tried several options. I did the following things 1) reset PRAM and NVRAM 2) repair permissions.
I hoped that the problem would be solved after installing Mountain Lion, but I have still a problem with my screensaver. Now with Mountail Lion the screensaver remains in the 'Flurry' modus, no mather what I try to change. Does anyone has suggestion?

This behaviour is consistant across all Mac systems so please don't be concerned with it.

  • Stop the iMac screen while using an external monitor.

I succeeded to play an .avi file in full screen on my 32" samsung lcd...but i would like to stop the iMac monitor while watching the avi. If i choose to stop the iMac monitor also the tv screen became black, and also if i start a screensaver on the iMac this will also appear on the lcd tv evenif i set up the external monitor as an extension of the desktop and not as a duplicate. There's a solution?
Tnx for the answers and sorry for my poor english

That one as well will dim both displays.
I have played around with this off and on for over a year now. The best that I have come up with is in this [Apple Discussion Thread|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5587803#5587803]
Sense then I have also found a way to dim the menu bar, but it was a little buggy to use all the time called [MenuShade|http://macapper.com/2007/10/17/menushade-dim-your-menu-bar>
Simply hide everything on the desktop as best you can and use a black desktop or photo image.

  • Screensaver  files aren't recognized

I just loaded all my files from my laptop (PB G4) via firewire to my new imac (G5). I now have a glitch in the screensaver on the imac (not on my laptop). In system preferences for the savers with slides (Paper Shadow.slideSaver) it says it is looking for slides. The documents are located in System/library/screensaver. I tried copying them to user library/ screensaver/ and that didn't work either.
It works fine on the laptop. The imac in System Prefs will recognize the other listed screensavers (ie. they "work"), but not the .slidesaver ones.
Any suggestions for what to do?

So you are trying to get the movies off a burned DVD disk. You need some software that extracts the files. They have been compressed and need to be uncompressed for editing in iMovie. You cannot just open them from a DVD disk, unless the DVD is a Data DVD.
You will need to use a third-party software such as Handbrake: http://handbrake.fr/
    Ripit: http://ripitapp.com/
    MPEG Streamclip: http://www.squared5.com/
    DVDxDV: http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
Most will need to be purchased. MPEG Streamclip is free, but may require Apple's QuickTime component ($20) for some MPEG-1 formats. http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/

  • Screensaver works .. if it wants to

    Hi, everybody.
I've downloaded OS X Mavericks, and it seems to work fine.
Yet, I have two different problems with my screensaver: on the iMac, it lets me choose among my iPhoto Library, but some of my albums are regularly shown as screensavers and others are not, with no apparent reason.
On the MacBook Pro, it doesn't even show my iPhoto Library as an option, so obviously none of my pictures is shown as screensaver.
Nothing like this ever happened before OS X Mavericks, so I assume there's a problem with it.
    Thanks for any help.

my ISP is Insight Broadband 10.0, When i say airport i refer to the card in my macbook pro. There are no other computers, tv's, or any other device being used. I have a (non wireless) RCA modem from the cable company that works fine and a Belkin wireless router. According to my computer i am receiving the signal from the computer. When I turn airport off the icon on my router goes off as well. When i turn it back on it turns back on. When I try to log on the internet it says my computer is not connected. Sometimes it decides to connect though. My girlfriends Dell worked fine with the wireless earlier when I was unable to get online...It's my first week and i'm new and frustrated. My mac is great except when it comes to wireless web access.

  • Can i rewind a picture displayed on screensaver slideshow, to view it once more

Have you looked at Delete and Close Gap as well as Delete for what you describe?
Nonetheless, adding or moving clips to an existing Timeline content without disturbing the existing Timeline content can be challenging and complex under certain scenarios.
Typical solutions include making these moves with a keyboard modified held down (Windows Alt or Ctr). I am strictly an Elements Windows user, so we will need to find the Mac counterparts for the Windows keyboard modifier techniques.
Also, if one move triggers a multi-chain disaster, then you should consider grouping block of clips so that they do not move while you are busy with your Timeline maneuvers. Check out the Clip Menu options for Group and Ungroup.
Some times in the "Mac condition", you need to use fn in addition to the command to achieve some of these Windows counterparts.
The following video tutorial on arranging clips and keyboard modifiers is being posted for informational non promotional reasons.
Premiere Elements: Arranging clips on the Timeline using modifier keys | lynda.com - YouTube
It is demo'd with Premiere Elements 8, but the principles are the same for later versions of the program.
Here is one variation of the issue on Windows.
ATR Premiere Elements Troubleshooting: PE: Delete and Close Gap Failures
You should not have to delete audio to prevent it from being split by an addition to an existing Timeline. The keyboard modifiers should help you resolve this type of issue.
    Please review and consider.

  • Screensaver issue with dual monitors

My screensaver has recently started acting up. It's sort of a minor blip, but it worked before and now it won't. Here's the issue: I have dual monitors (Intel imac, running Leopard, with a Viewsonic 20" lcd running in extended desktop mode). I use a "smart" album from iphoto as a screensaver (iphoto 08, v7.1.5). I've been using this particular smart album for several months as my screensaver and it's worked fine. How it used to work: when the screensaver activates (either by time or by hot corner) both screens would draw photos from this album and randomly scroll, zoom, and fade them across each monitor, independently but simultaneously. It's worked like this flawlessly for years, with several different iphoto albums. Now, I just noticed that the second monitor does not find the pictures. A message on screen "looking for pictures" appears on both monitors, as normal, but instead of both monitors going to screensaver, only the imac starts, and the message "looking for pictures" stays on the other. What's weird is that if I run the screensaver in test mode, it works like it used to (both screens work independently and simultaneously). And if I switch to one of Apple's supplied screensavers, both screens work as well. But any iphoto album no longer works properly. I don't understand what has changed. I just recently ran an upgrade (Software Upgrade, a week or so ago) but it seems like it worked normally since then, and I don't believe the upgrade was a major one or had anything to do with iphoto. I just noticed this problem today. I've tried restarting the machine. Same issue. Any ideas what could be causing this minor, yet annoying, glitch.

I had this same problem arise after installing an iPhoto update in late January. I contacted AppleCare and the problem was escalated to a Product Specialist. The Product Specialist contacted Apple Engineering and Engineering 1) replicated the problem and 2) confirmed that it's a bug.
So, Apple is aware they have a bug and we look forward to a bug fix -- at some point in the future. I hoped the problem would be fixed with the next iPhoto update but a major update came out today and the problem remains. I don't know if there's any way to know whether the problem is an OS bug or an iPhoto bug but either way we have to wait until it reaches the top of the pile at Apple...

  • Lion iphoto screensaver issue

I'am used to use use iPhoto screensaver on my iMac.
I'am using the "last 12 months" option in order to have a slideshow of the last year pictures.
Under Snow Leopard it was working perfectly. Since I have installed Lion, the "last 12 months" option selects a small fixed set of picture in a past timeframe which is much older than one year.
I have also noticed the same issue on my wife's iMac.
Does anyone have noticed such a behaviour ?

OK, sound right - thx Terence for your answer; but how does one flush the screensaver cache?
    And another question:
In iPhoto Slideshow faces are automaticly placed (more or less) in the center of the screen (quote from http://www.apple.com/ilife/iphoto/#new-slideshows: "Each shot is centered and framed perfectly, thanks to face detection.")
Why isn't this feature part of the screensaver showing iPhotos? I sure would like it to be!

  • 24" iMac 2.8Ghz problem with wireless reconnection wake up

Each time i turn on my new iMac or wake it up it refuses to auto reconnect to my Wireless network. Have to manually connect it up by typing name and key in despite this info being in preffered networks list.
Only thing that came to mind is not showing the SSID, ie its invisible. That said 3 other iBooks in my house all have no issues... + tried my mothers MacBook, also perfect. Tried clearing Keychain access to WEP hex key. Removing network from 'Preffered network list' restarting and re-entering it...
    Any ideas please?

I just installed my new 24" iMac 2.8Ghz and noticed the exactly same problem.
I have three different wireless networks available to test:
Airport network (Extreme+Express in WDS mode, SSID hidden, WPA2 Personal)
Airport Network (Express, SSID visible, WPA Personal)
    D-Link 802.11b network (SSID visible, WEP 128)
Most of the time I can connect to each network manually by selecting "Other.." from Airport menu but iMac does not auto reconnect to any of these networks when they are added to preferred networks list. Their network keys are succesfully stored to keychain. I have 90%-100% signal to all of these networks.
My other Macs (MacBook Pro, iMac G4 20" and iBook) are able to connect and auto reconnect without any problems. All computers including this new iMac 24" has latest Mac OS X 10.4.10 and all software updates installed.
Occasionally iMac also loses all (even SSID visible) networks from Airport menu. Also when this happens clicking the Aiport menu displays "spinning beach ball" for several seconds.
First sign of wireless network trouble I noticed was when I first started the new iMac and tried to connect to Aiport network with the Setup Assistant at first boot. iMac did not detect any of these available networks even if I manually entered their SSIDs and encryption keys. This tells me that problem is not due to misconfiguration made after "fresh from factory"-boot.
I am going to call Apple support today.

for some users it might work for a while, but you're risking the backups becoming corrupted over time.
FWIW, have a look at this user tip.

  • I,ve got the mid 2011 2.7 ghz imac running m lion. Should i use bootcamp or third-party software?

The reason i ask is due to my lack of faith in apples software. I,ve tried s leopard, lion and now m lion and my imac is still slower than all my friends windows computers. whether its internet based or non internet based its always slow. in my defense the imac choice was based on my ipad 2 which is ace. the imac cost over £1300 and i expected a lot better. Anyway i use it for gaming quite a lot and i,m prepared to upgrade the graphics card and buy windows 7 or 8 just for game accessability and the option of being able to use a gamepad that actually works with the imac. Are there any risks or disadvantages involved with using boot camp. I don,t have much confidence in Apples software as every system i,ve used has bricked my computer and caused me to reinstall due to apple software conflicts. (Apple tech supports theory and they charged me £35 for this little nugget even though i bought the imac Jan 2012 new).  i refuse to pay for a backup solution as i think it should be free like system restore on windows. I purposefully don,t store anything important on the imac due to past probs so losing data i can live with. Slowing it down further i cannot. Please help.

you can't upgrade the video cards on imacs
it's confusing what you are asking bootcamp is apples software which let you run windows native on your imac
the alternative is parallels or virtualbox if you need to run windows apps and those being emulated and will not have full access to the video card would not be good for gaming

  • IMac having connection difficulties upon Wake (Mountain Lion)

    iMac 27inch, mid-2010, 2 years old.
No wifi problems before, just performed a clean install of Mountain Lion. Now, whenever I wake my iMac from sleep, the internet connection refuses to work. Airport will say it's connected to my home wifi fine, but nothing will load at all. All other devices are fine.
Turning Airport on and off does nothing. However, opening Network preferences, the clicking the "Assist me..." button, shows that apparently the Mac is having trouble connecting to the ISP. Following the steps in the "Assist me..." section magically makes it connect and sorts everything out until it goes to sleep again.
    Any help?

I have mid-2011 21.5" iMac and upgraded Mac OS from version 10.7.4 to version 10.8 on the day Mountain Lion was launched in Mac App Store. Wireless network at home is set up with latest model of Apple Airport Extreme basestation and router provided by ISP. Worked perfectly before the Mac OS upgrade with 802.11n protocol and 2.4/5 GHz radio bands for Time Machine backup to NAS and fibre broadband Internet connection on iPhone 4S/ iPad 3/ iMac platforms.
Since I have only one configuration for preferred network, so order in the list does not matter. What really solve the problem is to disable the option "Ask to join new networks" in System Preferences > Network > WiFi window. I have performed following test successfully and will continue monitoring the condition in next few days.
    1. Put iMac to sleep with no application running.
    2. Wake up iMac half an hour later to check whether it connect successfully to Internet by itself.
Seems that wireless network connection always experience some problem whenever there is Mac OS upgrade, the same sympton also happened after upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion a year ago. Apple should release Mac OS upgrade vesion 10.8.1 as soon as possible.
Thank you very much for your simple remedy.

  • Second display not recognised by iMac

My 2011 27" iMac running 10.9.2 is refusing to recognise my projector when connected to either Thunderbolt port via a Mini Displayport to female HDMI adapter and HDMI cable.
My friend's 2010 Macbook Pro (also running 10.9.2) has no such problem when the projector is connected to its Mini Displayport using the same adapter and cable.
Clicking Detect Displays on the iMac does absolutely nothing. I've tried the adapter (firmly seated) in both Thunderbolt ports. I've also tried plugging it in before and after booting and/or restarting both the iMac and the projector. I've also reset PRAM/NVRAM and repaired permissions.
Could the adapter be somehow fully compatible with the MBP yet incompatible with the iMac?
    Any advice much appreciated,
    Sandy

Still no joy but some more evidence:
1 - System Information on the iMac says "No device connected" for both Thunderbolt ports regardless of whether the adapter is plugged in.
2 - Using another friend's Marshall HDMI monitor instead of the projector results in the same behaviour so the HDMI output device would appear to be irrelevant.
Below are the adapter's specs. Is there anything that would suggest incompatibility with TB?
    1. The mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter lets you connect a high definition monitor, projector, or LCD that uses a HDMI connector or cable to a MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air with a mini DisplayPort
    2. Mini DisplayPort 1.1a input and HDMI 1.3b output.
    3. HDMI highest video resolution 1080p.
    4. HDMI225 MHz / 2.25 Gbps per channel (6.75Gbps all channel) bandwidth.
    5. HDMI 12 bit per channel (36 bit all channel) deep color.
    6. Powered by Mini DisplayPort source
    7. Connectors: Mini DisplayPort Male to HDMI Female
