Screenshot File Extensions Showing on Tiger Intel

I've just switched to an iMac Intel 2.8 after years using Tiger on iMac PPCs. Encountering a minor annoyance that I would like to resolve. In the past (i.e. PPC days) screenshots were always saved by name without any file extension showing. On the new Intel machine, despite having "Show file extensions" unchecked in the Finder Preferences, every screenshot has the .png file extension showing. I'm guessing I have missed something obvious to turn this off but cannot find any advice despite searching here and via Google. Would appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction.

Try this: Click in the desktop and select Finder>Preferences>Advanced tab - deselect 'Show all filename extensions'.

Occasional file extension showing up in stacks

I have several folders set as stacks in my dock, mostly filled with Pages documents. Every now and then one of these documents will show up in the stack (in fan view) with the file extension (.pages)
This does not happen in a finder window as the finder is currently set to Hide All File Extensions

looks like given enough time, it seems to resolve itself. Any new document shows up with the extension for a while, then it refreshes and the extension goes away.

URLs without the file extension showing

This is just one of those odd things I've never had to do, so have never thought about it - but I've been asked to upload a powerpoint presentation, with a URL of just www.mydomainname.com/powerpointname
If anyone could let me know how this is done, that would be much appreciated.

Try this: name your powerpoint file index.html and put it into a folder (in your site) named powerpointname.
Ideally, that will default to showing the file without the filename technically showing.

CS5 chooses wrong file extension

I edit a photo, choose "Save As", change the name a little, and choose JPEG as the type of file. CS5 then incorrectly saves the edited photo as "file". This "file" is completely worthless as CS5 cannot reopen it. And, yes, the file extension says it will be saved as a JPEG and, lo and behold, it is saved as a "file". This is a new problem these past two days. I have been saving vacation photos for six weeks and they all were saved successfully as JPEGs until 2 days ago. I really hope somebody can help me. (Oh, I did reboot, of course...no difference.) Sherry

Welcome to the forum.
I have never seen PS NOT attach an extension (the one chosen) to a file with Save/Save_As/Save_As_a_Copy.
I think that Noel might be onto something, with the display of file extensions - by default, Windows does NOT show file extensions for "known formats." This can be changed, and I feel it should be, in Windows' Control Panel>Folder Options.
When doing the Save functions (all three), PS will suggest a file name, based on the name of the Image. Even if you delete that completely, including the file's extension, PS will (or should), still attach the file extension, chosen with the file type in the Save dialog box.
With File Extensions showing, what are the extensions of those files? If they are not showing a program's icon, say PS's, then that can be addressed with the File Types, and the associated program for that type. Again, that is in Control Panel>File Types.

Windows 8.1 File Extensions and Show Hidden Files Always showing

It's been an on and off problem for me since my windows 8.1 sometimes like to show it all whether it's the extensions of the file or even the file itself and it doesn't accept my command on not showing it. I have a bitdefender 2015 always up to date so my

Double file extensions keep showing up when saving a file in Illustrator CS3???

I just installed the CS3 suite and when I am saving files in illustrator I keep getting double file extensions. For example if I save a file named "filename" as a .eps file it shows up in the save window with filename.eps.eps Also, if I click through the possible file types to save it keeps adding them one after the other so if I click. say pdf eps and ai the file in the "Save As:" window looks like this " filename.pdf.eps.ai.ai" Any ideas why this is happening? I keep having to mouse click in the "Save As:" box and delete the extra extension. This is really annoying!!

I've seen extra periods (.) and extra extensions.
then you and Dave have the same conflict with a third party software, corrupt font, corrupt preference or the like because it is not happening o my Mac Pro and I have the same model Mac as you do and I am working fine in 10.5.1 and only problem I have had with AI CS 3 is when I tried to place a 3D CAD file with the extension .dxf which is not really supported.
I have not seen this even once. Would you like to see screen shots, it honestly is not a 10.5.1 or Illustrator issue on its own. This has to be user specific.

Adobe Type Manager problem with Windows 7 and DIN font file extension not showing

I have Windows 7 and for some reason I cannot install Adobe Type Manager onto my Computer.
I need ATM to install the DIN font but am having no luck what so ever.
I can see the DIN font in my Dropbox but it is showing up like this:- ._DIN-bold, no file file extension. what am I doing wrong? is it Mac?

Adobe Type Manager absolutely cannot be installed on Windows 7. In fact, even attempting to install it may corrupt your operating system installation and its ability to properly render Type 1 and OpenType CFF fonts. The last version of Windows for which ATM was at all compatible was Windows XP, 32-bit only!
Adobe Type Manager is not at all necessary to install fonts, even Type 1 fonts, on Windows 7 systems. Right click on the font file for TrueType of OpenType CFF fonts or the .PFM file for Type 1 fonts and select the Install option.
The font file you are trying to install is for MacOS. It cannot be installed on Windows.

Import images grid does not show file extension

I use Aperture in a "referenced" mode. At times, I have jpeg files in the same folder as my nef files (which had already been imported into Aperture). The import images list does not have (or I cannot find out how to display) the file name that shows the file extension too. Of the data available, i can scroll to the right and see a lot of different metadata in the list, but not the file extension.
Does anyone know how to have the file extension displayed in the list that is shown when trying to import?

Aperture can display just about anything you would like to display. The key is putting the correct field into the metadata set for that is being used for the browser or viewer that is active (you can have two ready to go and switch between them or none with a shortcut key)

File extension not showing after a clip has been captured

Hi ,
I am using Adobe CS6 and am capturing in DVCAM format as soon as a clip is being captured , a new project is created with the captured clip in that
But the issue is i am not able to get the file extension
for ex: if you right click on that new clip and choose properties u can only see the file name (for ex: 123) , but if u manually goahead and import the same captured clip from local hard drive , it will show the extension
for ex: 123.avi

How do I show file extensions

Just upgraded. My last iPhoto import left off the file extensions. I would like to view them as part of the title, not in the info pane.

Where were these photos imported from?
iPhoto doesn't display the file extension of the photos but you can select one of the thumbnails and use the File ➙ Reveal in Finder ➙ Original menu option
and be taken to the folder inside the library that contains the file and that file will be selected. You'll be able to check the file extension that way unless it never had one in the first place.

Finder - File extensions - strange behavior

I have a MacBook and an Intel iMac, both running 10.5.2. I noticed that for some file types, Finder hides the file extension on the iMac, but not on the MacBook. Some examples are VMware Fusion virtual machines (vmwarevm) and Safari web links (webloc). BOTH machines have "Show all file extensions" unchecked in Finder advanced preferences.
The only thing I can think of that could be related is that Leopard has been upgraded from Tiger on the MacBook, while the iMac got a fresh install.

There is a provision to show or hide extensions on a file-by-file basis in Finder's "Get Info" window for each file. Look just below the name in the "Name & Extension" section of the Get Info window & you should see the checkbox next to "Hide Extension." (It will be grayed out if the file has no extension, otherwise it should be active.)
The global "Show all file extensions" preference overrides the individual file's setting & forces all extensions to be shown when it is checked, but it does not override files' settings when it is not checked. (Unchecked is not the equivalent of 'Show none' but of 'do nothing.')
Thus, to hide all extensions, you must use the "Get Info" window to explicitly set the "Hide Extension" option.

Display File Extension in iPhoto?

I've just started to use iphoto. In the thumbnail view of an event (or for that matter, anytime I'm viewing a display of thumbnails), I would like iphoto to display file name and file extension. It's not doing that and I can't see a setting in iphoto preferences to enable file extensions. I know there's a Finder preference to show all extensions, and it is checked.

Yes.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always. In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:

Note: to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

HTML file extension on ALL dowloads

I am new to Mac ... MacBook Pro, OS X Tiger ... so this may be a pretty basic question, the answer to which I cannot find in these archives.
Whenever I receive an email with an attachment, regardless of the source application of the attachment, e.g. Word, Acrobat .pdf, etc., Mac dowloads it and adds it to the dowload window on the desktop with an .html file extension. For example FileName.doc.html.
I'll be dardned if any application, to include the MacWord or Acrobat 7 Reader will open, in readable fashion, their respective / original files once the .html extension has been added. Nor have I found a way to simply access the file and rename it without the .html extension, thereby 'tricking' the file into opening in its native application. Some of these files do 'open' in a window but show only gibberish code.
Any suggestions?

1. Don't download an attachment but drag it to your
desktop, a folder or onto the icon of the application
which opens it (like Preview for a .pdf).
2. Toss the downloads folder and / or change the
location for mail downloads - which by default is in
your user library. My assumption is an action is
somehow attached to that folder which renames every
item put in it. I can't see how this would be Mail's
doing.

Kernel extensions show as directories

I was looking at the AMD and the Nvidia kernel extensions in /System/Library/Extensions to see if there was any info on the supported graphics cards in the Mavericks version of these files and I noticed something odd.
About 2/3 of the .kext files are presenting as directories.
For the few .kext files I did look at all I did was right click on the file and select "show package contents". Nothing was edited, or even opened in an editor. I do understand that .kes\xt files are basicly directories that are packaged up in a specific way.
Here is a snipet of what I am seeing...
I don't thing I even looked at any of the .kext files that are now showing as directories. I'm not sure if this will cause a problem on reboot or not.
Has anyone seen this issue before? Is this a finder problem?

Everything in that folder should be a bundle -- that is, a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. If some of the items have lost that attribute, then your installation is corrupt and you should reinstall. You should also get rid of any third-party "utilities" that could have caused the damage.
Your screenshot doesn't show anything abnormal.

Photoshop cs5 is not appending file extensions

in previous versions, photoshop appended to the file extension in the fiel save/save as dialog box. it no longer does this and when you save a file it does not append the file extension to the file name, resulting in unknown fiel type.
i am running windows 7 64-bit with photoshp cs5.
it does not make any since to have the option of appending the file extension if the program is not going to do it.

Just tried this out on my Windows 7 64 bit system, and I get the same results using Photoshop.
When I save a file in Photoshop CS5 64 bit with the name 047. Crayon - Abstract the file is saved as 047. Crayon - Abstract without a file extension, no matter what document type I select in the drop-down.
In Word I get the expected result:
When I save a file in Word with the name 047. Crayon - Abstract the extension is automatically added (047. Crayon - Abstract.docx)
