Screnn turns black while booting (using fb)

Hi all,
so far i read a lot but now i reached a point where i don't know how to go on.
since kernel ~2.6.20 i got the problem that the screen turns black when the machine (an IBM Thinkpad X30) is booting. This only happens when i try to use framebuffer on the console (so e.g. setting vga=773 option in grub). since i don't need x running all the time and don't start it automaticly on bootup. so i really would like to use a human readable resolution on the ttys.
i tried several kernel configurations but nothing works. the graphics chipset is an intel and i use the i810 driver module.
I have one old kernel (2.6.18-7) running with the vga=773 option which works setting the tty resolution right so, that the screen doesn't switch to a blank screen. but this is an old kernel image where i still use an initrd image while booting (grub line "initrd /boot/kernel26.img"). the regarding kernel parameters seem to be exactly the same compared with all my new kernel versions i tried so far (my actual kernel is 2.6.23.12).
i also tried to compile the fbcon as a module and load it manually using rc.conf, but also this doesn't change anything.
can anyone help me?! thanks a lot guys!
edit: maybe i forgot an important issue. of course the machine runs. if i login "blind" and type "startx" the x window system appears. and also if i remove the vga=773 i "see" the laptop booting. but this shouldn't be the solution!

This seems rather odd, but, maybe the wrong framebuffer module is being used because the scancodes for vga=??? that you're using seem plausible to work. Of course, the only way to check this out is to see if udev or the initramfs image is loading your mystery module to cause this to happen.
FYI as a suggestion, you could try out using different console fonts if the framebuffer does not work for you as intended.
All the best in finding the culprit :-)
Cheers.

  • My macbook turns black while active, my macbook turns black while active? why does this happen?

My Macbook turns black while active even if sleep mode is not active. it turns on by moving the track pad? Whats wrong with it?

The Mountain Lion installer looks at your internal drive to make certain that it's error-free before continuing installation. You should have an application named "Install OS X Mountain Lion.app" in your Applications folder now so you shouldn't have to download it again. Do this...
Boot to your Lion recovery partition by holding down both the Command and the R keys while booting. Open Disk Utility from the Recovery partition and select your hard drive (usually named "Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it) and click on Verify Disk. If you come up with any errors, click on Repair Disk. At the end of the cycle you will get a message that the disk was successfully repaired or a message that the hard drive could not be repaired.
If you're able to repair the disk, just reboot as normal and open the "Install OS X Mountain Lion.app" and the installation will proceed. If Disk Utility was unable to repair the disk, you need to get to your local Apple Store as soon as possible so that they can see if the disk is salvageable or beyond repair.
    Good luck,

  • Hello, when I turn up my macbook it start lagging  a lot and also when it is turning off while I use it it works perfectly

Hello, when I turn up my macbook it start lagging  a lot and also when it is turning off while I use it it works perfectly anyone help

Not enough free storage space can slow your Mac down. Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage. Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
Anti virus software, as well as third party Mac cleaning utilities such as MacKeeper  and CleanMyMac can also slow your Mac down.
Check to see if the startup disk needs repairing.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.
Make sure to back up all important data first before using OS X Recovery.

  • It's been power cycling (turns off while in use) with increasing frequency, and now won't even turn on. What gives?

My phone has been turning off while in use, and would, in the past, recover if I turned it off and on.
Now it won't do anything, and I know that the battery is not dead. What gives?

    Hello Hoges,
About your question of connecting the Elitepad directly to another PC via USB.
Since the tablet is considered a full windows PC, you cannot connect it directly to another PC via USB.
Androids and Apple iphones, etc etc. are different than a windows PC. Even if you used an OTG usb cable.
Windows PC's could be connected via a crossover cable but it is very particular and requires an ethernet port on both machines.
You can connect them via a Network though, like connecting via a Home Group through a wireless connection.
Better still, you can backup your files on a cloud service like Dropbox, Onedrive or Google and then download them to the other machine. If both machines are using Windows 8.1, you can use HP Connect to backup and transfer files.
If you have a usb to micro usb adapter, you can use a pen drive to tranfer files with.
I do not know anything about the magazine articles you are downloading, but if done so via an app in the Windows store, couldnt those be redownloaded anyway without transfering?
IF the tablet is still under warranty and the charging port is loose, you can contact HP Support to see what your options are.
    Hope it helps.

  • The screen on my iPhone 4 turned black while i was using it-it was not dropped or damaged in anyway. The phone itself is still working as it comes up in itunes when I plug the phone into my computer, but the screen is completley black. What can I do?

The screen on my iPhone has gone black while I was using it. It just "shut off". The phone is still working  as I can hear/see it when it plugs into the computer, but the screen just wont turn on. I've tried the soft reset "holding down home and lock screen" and i've tried to restore settings. I went to the apple store and they said I had to send it to my provider (in another country) but my phone contract has run out.
Is there a way to fix this?
If not, is there some way apple can replace the phone? It's less than 2 years old. Surely the screen shouldn't just give out like that.
    Thank you

  • Screen turns black while using safari

While in safari, the screen turns black & returns you back to home. Appears to only happen on larger sites with lots of data.  Getting worst now. Almost happens everytime we're in safari(WIFI). All other apps work fine. I have an Ipad (1). Cleared history & did latest update. Still a BIG problem. Any other advise. Please advise.

If you have cleared the history, cookies and data, you have pretty much done all that you can. Other users are reporting this same "crashing" behavior with Safari.
The only other thing that I can think of that MAY be of some help is to quit apps that are running the background. Few apps really do run in the background, but it doesn't hurt to try this and see if it does any good.
To close apps - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus (-) sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Some have suggested that if you are using iCloud - try turning off Bookmark syncing and that has helped somewhat.
Apple has announced an update to the iOS that is supposed to be released soon, hopefully they will address this issue in the update.

  • Photo turns black while editing...

    Hi,
I just upgraded from iPhoto 09 to iPhoto 11. All the latest software updates have been applied. Mostly, there's been no problems, except for one really annoying one.
When editing a photo, most of the time it works fine. But often times, especially when doing some heavy editing with the various exposure, saturation, sharpness and other sliders, the photo will just turn black...nothing. If I exit from edit mode, the photo is there just fine and the edits have even been applied. I go back to edit mode, it works fine for a couple of minutes and then, again, black. I tried this with many different photos, same results. This never happened before with iPhoto for me. I even tried it with photos that were similarly edited with iPhoto 09 (made a duplicate of the original and started working) and am getting the same problem.
I tried rebuilding the library (checking every box in the rebuilding dialogue box). No dice.
I tried trashing the com.apple.iPhoto folder in the caches folder of user/library. No dice.
I tired trashing the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file in the Preferences folder in user/library. No dice.
I even tried creating a new library and importing new photos in there and after some minutes of use, same problem. Again, no dice.
My machine is a white MacBook, 2.0 GHz C2D with 4 gigs of RAM running 10.6.5 and all the latest software updates (including iPhoto 9.1.1).
Does anyone know what gives? Is this a bug others are encountering? Thanks.

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. *Permissions in the Library* : Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. *Minor Database corruption*: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. *A Damaged Photo*: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. *A corrupted iPhoto Cache*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
    5. *A corrupted preference file*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    *If none of these help*:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Regards
    TD

  • Screen turns black while I'm working

My screen turns black, almost like it's going to sleep right when I'm in the middle of typing, searching the web; basically doing anything active...
My screensaver and sleep settings are in the proper positions, so I don't think this should be happening...
    hmmm....
    any ideas?

Black screens are the curse of the iBooks. Search for "black screen" or screen flickering" to find many others with similar problems. There are a few possible causes, but the most common is probably the reed switch. This is the switch that puts your computer to sleep when you close the lid. Unfortunately, extremely delicate wires + a display hinge opening and closing all the time = crazy problems.
Signs you have a reed switch problem:
    - your screen may flicker in brightness randomly.
    - it goes black more often when the display angle or laptop is moved.
    - after it goes black you can still faintly see the screen, or when you connect an external display it works fine.
    - you can put the laptop to sleep and wake it to temporarily bring the display back to life.
To fix the reed switch problem:
    - take it back to Apple if you're under warranty. If you can't get the problem to happen at the Genius Bar, tell them about the problems you've been having and insist that they fix it anyway. This is way too common a problem for them to blow you off easily.
    - if you're not under warranty, you can pay Apple or some other Mac shop to fix it. I have no idea how much this costs, but probably at least a few hundred.
    - if you're not under warranty and you're brave/poor enough that you want to fix it yourself it is possible (I just did it myself last week). While there's nothing about the repair that takes special knowledge, it is a very detailed and arduous process. There are dozens of screws and parts that need to be removed in a very specific sequence. It took me about 5 hours start to finish (though I also replaced the hard drive) and I ended up with a few "extra" pieces that didn't make it back in despite being very careful. On the plus side, the reed switch itself is only about $25 and is available from places like Smalldog.
If you do decide to fix it yourself, do youself a favor and download the guides from ifixit.com. If you google around, you can probably also find the actual Apple repair manual (which is even better), but ifixit.com has great screw guides to keep track of everything.
One last thing - I originally had the reed switch problem under warranty and Apple fixed it with no problem. Unfortunately, the reed switch problem came back in a couple of months - after the warranty expired. Just a word to the wise if you have this problem and you're considering whether to buy the extended AppleCare policy.

When I bring up a photo to work on and i try to draw circle or square with the Marquee tool my screen flashes black and then stays black until I use the move tool?

This issue is associated with your graphics driver not being compatible with PS' hardware acceleration. Updating the driver if possible would be advisable, otherwise turn off OpenGL drawing under Preferences --> Performance.

When attempting to add simple text on an individual layer, the layer is turning black. This prevents me from seeing the text I'm editing. When I move to another layer the text displays correctly. When I go to edit the text by clicking the image the layer goes black again. It is like editing text in the dark, turning the light on to see the changes, turning the light off to make the changes, repeat.
    Has anyone else seen this?
    Are there any suggested resolutions?

Update your graphics driver or turn off OpenGL in the prefs. Naturally, also check for potentiall harmful "bad" fonts and reset your text palettes.

Yes.  And, Apple needs to work on this.
It is terrible because it is random and there is NO WAY to just select and get back the button or the choice.

  • Macbook Air Screen keeps turning off while in use

    Hi all,
I've had my Macbook Air for about 10 days now - it was working fine for the first 5 days, then I went away for a long weekend break, came home, switched it on and now it is all messed up.
Randomly and frequently while the computer IS IN USE the display will turn off for a seemingly random amount of time then come back on with no input from me.  So just to be clear, this is not the power profile, or the energy saving setting... what happens is that while I am mid-typing or in the middle of a mouse movement (it has happend a couple of times during me typing this first paragraph already) the display on the Macbook will go completely black, as in the blacklight goes off and nothing can be seen on the screen - then, no matter if I carry on typing or if I just take my hand off the keys and give it no input what-so-ever, after some time (as short as 5 seconds or as long as 30 seconds) the screen will pop back on as if nothing had happened.
    Some other things to note:
If I carry on typing when the screen goes dark the chracters i've typed are there when the screen comes back on - so it seems to be only affecting the display.
Whether I wiggle the mouse, bash keys or just sit back in frustration has no bearing on how long it takes for the screen to come back on.
It appears to occour more often when the macbook is on a solid surface like my desk as opposed to on my lap - though it has occured in both locations.
I have power cycled, restarted, rebooted etc a million times.
It happens in both OSX and Windows boots
It is truly random, I can go as long an hour without it happening, then it will happen 20 times in 5 minutes.
The keyboard backlight stays on throughout (if it is on already)
If this was a 5 year old laptop I'd be straight away assuming this was a display cable, inverter cable or lid-close switch problem, but it's only 10 days old!  I'll be very annoyed if this is a hardware issue this soon.  What should be my next course of action?? Phone Apple?  Or take it straight to an Apple store?
My only worry is that its impossible to recreate the fault on demand, its very random - however I did record a video on my iPhone of it doing it constantly for a 3 minute period while I was using the computer (complete with my sighs of frustration as a soundtrack!!).  Will that be enough to convince them if I'm unlucky (or lucky depending on which way you look at it!) and it doesn't display the fault when they inspect it??
I tried to embed the video but the video button above is greyed out, whats up with that?!
    Thanks,
    Seb

    Step 1
Select "System Preferences" from the Apple drop-down menu at the top left corner of the desktop. Alternatively, you can open the System Preferences window by clicking the “System Preferences” icon in the dock.
    Step 2
Click the "Energy Saver" icon in the Hardware section. The Energy Saver window opens.
    Step 3
Click the "Settings For" drop-down box and select "Power Adapter" from the drop-down list. Click the "Optimization" drop-down box and select "Custom" from the list.
    Step 4
Click the "Computer Sleep" slider and drag it all the way to the right. The slider will stop at "Never." Click the "Display Sleep" slider and drag it to "Never" as well.
    Step 5
Click the "Settings For" drop-down box again and select "Battery" from the list. Select "Custom" from the Optimization drop-down box. Move both sliders to "Never."
