Screw Loose - Missing Screw

I recently (less than a week ago) bought a brand new MBP 15".  I love this machine; however, there is one problem.  Just today I noticed that the screw in the middle on left side (as it's sitting on my lap so that I can type on it) was loose.  Because it's a phillips, I thought I would try to tighten it, no dice.  I ignored the problem and then not even an hour later the screw fell out onto my bed.  I haven't been able to find it, but I want to replace it.  Can anyone give me the specs on what kind of screw to buy?  If the screw is not available in hardware stores, I should be able to get one from my friend who owns a computer repair shop.  Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

I would. You're certainly within the buyer's remorse period so there's no reason to put up with it. Let BB exchange it for you.

  • Query about MP 4,1 NB temps.

    Hi all
My north bridge and heat sink stand out as being particularly hot compared to the rest of the system.
I've seen the NB chip go into the high 80s under light load.
My machine has the 2 x 2.93 ghz 8 core upgrade, and an HD 5870 ghz card.
All other temps are more than acceptable.
The NB is always the hottest by at least 12 degrees.
I currently balance my fan speeds at the following speeds, which allows me to maintain 55-60 degree NB chip under idle/moderate use,
    PCI : 830
    PS : 750
    Exhaust : 810
    Intake : 1000
    BoostA : 2300
    BoostB : 2300
but I run a recording studio.....It's too loud.
I'm aware of the threads regarding loose/missing NB heatsink clips but I don't think this is the case, however, I have investigated the heatsink and don't find it to be rock solid.
Can anyone advise what normal NB temps should be on a similar system at idle?
For the adventurous amongst you, should the NB heatsink wiggle slightly with very little persuasion?
Many thanks in advance for any info offered.
Note to mods: If this question still breeches your 'polls and petitions' policy, would you considering modifying it rather than deleting it?
    Thank you.

I think boost fans speed are too high, it's about 860rpm in normal condition and they are for CPU, not for Northbridge.
The temperature of Northbridge of my Mac Pro 4,0(upgrade to 3.2GHz W3565)  is around 67Celsius, it's about 99Fahrenheit.

  • Liklihood of X220 Replacement

    Hi There,
I'll be sending my X220 in for repairs at Lenovo within the next few days as I had purchased a 3 year warranty coming to an end Aug 2014 (just in time lol).
Because I've had the machine so long and have held off on sending it in for fairly minor issues I now have somewhat of a laundry list for them to look at, some of which are simply a result of wear and tear, which include:
Trackpad/ Nub does not work (not a driver issue)
White/ Light spots/ Discolouration of screen (various areas of the screen)
    Loose/ missing keys
    Loose AD/DC plug
Overheating (To the point that it is uncomfortably hot to the touch)
USB port damage (plastic piece broken)
    Aesthetic chipping
I'm wondering that given some of the hardware damage (trackpad, screen and potential component damage from heat) is it possible they simply offer to replace the machine rather than undergo all the work to repair it?

they will only do the replacement, if they don't have major parts for the machine, which is unlikely, given how many X220 are sold and is still used by the enterprise customers.

    Jin Li

  • How bad is the service just to get a missing screw of a MBR retina

    Hi,
I am very disappointed about the service provided by apple for a missing body screw of a Retina MBP bottom part. The process is to go to a service center spend there 30-60 min to report that a screw is missing and to answer stupid questions such as how can the screw be missed. Hello a screw get missed if it gets loose
As all service centers in Singapore do not even have a stupid screw that just cost a few cents on stock.
It must be ordered and than you will have to go back again 1 -2 days later to pick it up and let them screw it back.
That is not a costumer service I would expect from a device that cost several 1000 of dollars and paying extra for an apple care pack.
Dear apple costumer service, please provide me an answer how you will overcome such a disappointing service, and provide me an email where to complain about this issue.
    Best regards,
    Christian

I'm sorry to hear this. What you have to know is that Apple wasn't attending you directly, but a third-party company that provides Apple support, and the experience with these companies is terrible in most of the cases. For example, I have heard cases of some repairs that took months on a Spanish reseller, but it's a worldwide problem.
I recommend you to contact with Apple in Singapore directly, from their phone number > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57#S

  • Anyone experience a loose screw out of hard drive frame shorted out the laptop ?

HP Compaq Presario CQ62-225NR notebook.  Less than 1 1/2 years old.
Notebook would not start...no lights on with power cord plugged in.
Picked it up to take out the battery and heard something loose bouncing around inside.
Trying to get the loose object out, started to remove the hard drive.  On one side of the hard drive,
1 screw was missing and another was loose.  The 2 screws on the other side were fine.
So what was bouncing around in the machine was a screw from the hard drive frame and looks like it shorted out the PC.
    Anyone seen this before ?
Anyone have any luck getting HP to honor a defect after the warrantee expires ?
    Thanks, Ken

I have only seen it when the screw was unscrewed. How would a screw come out of the hole? You can try with HP but they are pretty literal about the warranty terms.

  • After warranty: permanent fix Yoga loose screw problem before case breaks

Yoga laptops tend to use tiny 2mm case screws and they often fall out. The screws in the rear secure the hinge and once that becomes loose the case will eventually break. Others may be interested in a permanent fix because it's mechanically impossible for these screws to stay in place: they are obviously underdimensioned both in diameter and in length.
After I had my broken case replaced by Lenovo, at my own expense, the screw in the left corner soon worked itself out again. Here's how I fixed it, drilling all the way through the existing hole, not pretty, but it has worked well over several months and it saves from regularly having the case break. (It's $280 each time. Lenovo has officialy never seen the problem, at least in my correspondance with them. It is a customer abuse issue.)
The materials for the fix run to about 25 cents: a #6 screw and a nut. I had to file away at the lid to make room for the nut. Also, the screw needs to be cut and filed. The screw cannot be completely countersunk. Extra protection is necessary at the underside of the case.
Bolting the bottom case sandwich this way holds the hinge in place.

Follow-up: as others have experienced, Lenovo does apparently not accept loose or missing screws or consequental dammage as a valid warranty claim.
Indeed, I received the message from Lenovo: "After further diagnosis, our repair engineers found damages on your computer that is not covered by the Lenovo limited warranty."
Yet, I had very clearly explained that the mechanical damage was the result of a missing screw.
Thus my extended warranty claim was easily denied, because this warranty extends the original warranty!! More wasted work.
So, I have my Yoga back, though, for almost three hundred dollars. The repair was fine. Nightmare is over. But I won't hide my feelings: I'm profoundly unhappy this treatment. Also, I'm abstaining from using the Yoga in tablet mode: it's simply not sturdy enough, the flexing of the case will lead to the same problem again.
Luckily, as a laptop it works quite well!

  • Loose screw rattling inside the new mini

Hi, this is my first mini and as much as I love the look of this little computer
I am a little bit afraid of quality because I have just found loose little black screw inside
rattling around while moving the unit. I turned off the machine an opened the
ram access cover allowing the screw to fall out. Now my question was it spare screw which apple worker
accidentally lost or it got screwed out from some part inside?
Nothing what I can see from underneath is missing a screw though.

Most probably an extra screw, not a loose one come undone. Imagine the poor Chinese assembly worker trying to match the quota for her shift. She fumbles a tiny black screw whilst positioning it, and it drops off the magnetised screwdriver. Does she stop the line flow to and call the line manager to tip the screw out or grab another quick, and screw it home?
Nevertheless, insist on a replacement, it's Apple's problem not yours.
Let us know what response you get please.

  • Loose screws on Satellite P50W

    Hello,
I recently purchased (4 weeks ago) a P50W and found one screw had fallen out and some of the other screws on the bottom of the device have become loose, has anyone else found they had this issue?
I just tightened them for now, but I'm intrigued to see if this is normal as I take my device to work and back each day and use it throughout the home bed/office and lounge.

I think you are the first one who reported about such issue. I hope some other P50W owners will post own experiences with this notebook model.
Anyway, if you will notice some similar or any other issues I recommend you to contact nearest Toshiba service and ask for help or opinion. I hope they can help you with this and even give you missing screw.
Usually if the screws are fixed properly there should not be any problem in the future. I had several notebooks in last 15 years and Ive never noticed something like this.

  • Y2P Missing Screw

    Hello all,
Just recently noticed one of the 11 back plate screws are missing on my Yoga 2 Pro that I've had since January 2014. Called Lenovo to see if they could send me one to replace it, but they said that under the warranty, I could only send in my laptop to have them put in the screw themselves. That's ridiculous, and I'm just going to buy the screw myself. Lenovo doesn't even have it for sale through their parts department, which is also ridiculous. I've been wanted to crack the comp open anyways since I wanna check if WiFi card's antenna is loose or not in hopes that'll fix the dropped wifi problem that plagues this model.
In the manual, it says it's M2 x 6mm, flat head, and nylon-coated, but I'm guessing from other unrelated forum posts that that drive type is torx 5. Can anyone confirm this? Also, where the hell can I find one that will match it? I've tried McMaster-Carr, Amazon, and I'm coming up empyt-handed.
    Thanks in advance!

Ask them to elevate the case to a supervisor. Then explain how if you need to send it in, you expect them to cover shipping since it was their poor craftmenship that caused this issue. Then remind them that the cost to mail 1 screw is like 10 cents and the cost of shipping and returning a laptop is more then that.
If the rep has brains, you should be fine.

  • I have screwed up a bunch of settings etc. on macbook pro running preinstalled lion. I think I should is to wipe the computer and reinstall to start over again. I will loose nothing of importance except a few passwords.  Is this wise? How do I do it?

I have screwed up a bunch of settings, folders, photos, etc on my macbook pro running factory installed Lion.  To get everything straightened out, I was thinking I should do a delete and reinstall and just start over like it was a brand new computer.  I will only loose some usermane and password info and my history and cookies.  There is nothing else on the computer that is not on another device somewhere.  Does this sound like the right thing to do?  I cannot seem to find ways to correct the problems indivdually, though I am sure they are there.  If so, how do I do it?  My computer did not come with any type of disc, I do not believe.  Thanks in advance for anyone's help!

    Yes, that sounds reasonable.
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process
          has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Why is the rubber part on the bottom of my computer separating from the computer? It looks like a screw is missing? Is this typical? I bought it last March.

  • Missing two screws on the bottle of 15 rmbp

Missing two screws on the bottle of 15 retina macbook pro. Where can I get screw? I need to repair it.

"Notice the two screws at the left side of the computer. Although they can be removed, they exist for cosmetic purposes only and do not require removal. If they are removed, however, be sure to reinstall the two identical 3-mm long shoulder screws at the corner near the ports. Do not use longer screws."
I would say if they are stripped, stick some silicone seal in the hole and the put the screw in and let it dry. You should be good to go.

  • Do I have a Screw Loose - or is it in my mind?

    Hi
Just bought a used Mac yesterday and after fixing disconnected fans with the help of maclover I noticed there might be a screw missing from where the metal cover over the CPUs slips in just below the case (I hope thats clear enough).
Maybe I should post a URL to a photo?
Any one know what type of screw is needed and where I could get one - the vendor (a business) says it will cost £19 - sounds madness for a single screw - he says its a plastic one.
Wish I knew the history of the machine - the serial number says only 3 months old.
    Thanks

Thank you kindly for that info - apparently the supplier was quoted £19 in the UK.
    From here:
    http://www.applepalace.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=4423
looks like that price is for a pack of 10.
Its a used PC - only 3 months old - so I don't know why anyone would want to take that off - weird?
Hope it doesn't call the warranty into question - but can't see why as there doesn't look like any harm has been done - but they might be funny about it.
I may have to try and get my money back as I don't really want a machine which has been fiddled with so much - two of the fan cables were disconnected too. Only had it 24 hours.
    Thanks

Hi, Accidentally somebody screw up Photoshop CS4 and InDesign CS4 Master edition on a MAC computer in the school. The install discs did not start to run therefore I can't  reinstall the 2 missing programs. I want to install the softwares, therefore I download those from here.  The downloaded program refuse to accept the serial number which was given to the school when they purchased the Master Collection CS4 MLP A00. Thank you for your help, in advance.

    Hi Jeff,
Thank you. I am a little bit busy at work, sorry for the delayed reply. I tried to solve the problem, but it still exists. The 3rd of the Adobe disk is damaged someway. I tried to run on my mac at home and it has a failure. So I think we have no other choice that to download the full pack of master collection. I had a discussion with the IT expert and he figured out that company does not exist any more from where they purchased the Adobe Master Collection for Mac and PC. So If you would be kind to help me, what kind of information ID or any kind of document would be needed to identify the purchaser institute (us). I don't think any of us has an account at the Adobe. I will try to figur out. I desperately need to replace Photoshop and InDesign as without them it's really harsh to teach the kids fot the graphic design.
    Sincerely yours.
    Peter
