Screwdriver to remove mounting screws on late 2009 MBP HD
Hello All,
I'm about to replace the hard drive on my late 2009 MBP 13". When I reviewed the instructions in the manual on how to do this is seemed fairly clear. One question that came up was what type of screwdriver is required to remove the mounting screws from the existing hard drive? The replacement HD does not have them therefore I'm going to put the ones from the old HD into the new one. In doing searches here I found some that said Torx T6 and some said a T8. Please advise. Thank you.
even the right sized flathead will work
even a small right sized Philips will work in a torx slot.

If you mean you only have 6GB of hard drive space left, you need to do some serious house cleaning.
Rule of thumb: You should never let your hard drive get to where you have only 10-15% of space left. -
Late 2009 MBP fans turning at 5600 rpm all the time, bluetooth unavailable and wont turn off

I have a late 2009 MBP, about a week ago the fans started turning at around 5600 rpm constantly, they are very noisy. The bluetooth has also stopped working, the icon's drop down menu says that it's not available. In addition, the computer won't turn off, it restarts immediately after shutdown. I have reset the PRAM and SMC but with no luck, this has been annoying me greatly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank YouYou've already done the two things that I would suggest (resetting the SMC being at the top of the list). Your fans may be failing - I had the same problem with one of my fans and it had to be replaced.
The problem is with your other situations - I would really suggest backing up your data and making a clean install of Lion to see if that rectifies your Bluetooth, shutdown, etc., problems (as the SMC reset didn't). If that fails then it's time to visit the Apple Store and have them run diagnostics. Just curious, though... does Bluetooth show up under your System Profile as being connected via the USB hub under Bluetooth USB Host Controller?

Late 2009 MBP 13" rebooting to blinking folder icon with questionmark
My late 2009 MacBook Pro 13" is rebooting into a blinking folder icon with questionmark at least twice a week.
Some further Information: this happens when the Notebook is in sleep mode. today the MB rebooted about 1-2 h after closing the lid. sometimes this takes longer, usually sometimes at night. after the reboot the EFI shows a flashing folder icon with a questionmark. the notebook gets insanely hot and the fans are spinning at full speed.
No Messages at that time in the Console Logs.
After turning the MacBook off and on again it boots just fine into Yosemite.

Late 2009 MBP Refuses to Sleep.

Problem: My late 2009 Macbook Pro (10.6.8/Snow Leopard) refuses to sleep. It doesn't sleep when I close the lid and when I attempt to put it to sleep manually, the screen goes dark for no more than two seconds then wakes back up. When I close the lid, I observe the white light on the front right that usually oscillates--dims and brightens-- when it is sleeping. Lately, when I close the lid, the light comes on and begins to fade as usual, but as soon as it is dim it quickly comes back on. It is very similar to someone dozing off and forcing their eyes back open quickly, if a visual is needed.
When I put my ear to the bottom of my MBP, it is still running. However, every 20 seconds or so it sounds as though it is attempting to sleep--the fan and other bits slow down-- but starts back up again. The light on the front verifies this, because it dims then relights quickly when this happens. I have not downloaded any applications that prevent my computer from sleeping. I have enabled settings that put my notebook to sleep everyday at the same time, but it never abides.
Things I've tried:

-Power off and restart (failed)
-Sleep from Apple menu (failed)
-Sleep from power button (failed)
-Sleep from lid closing (failed)
-Sleep from login screen in safe mode by closing lid (failed)

I have a hdd from a late 2009 mbp. I upgraded from leopard to snow leopard to lion to mountain lion. Now I want to upgrade to a ssd. Do I need to purchase a new copy of mountain lion to go on my new ssd? If I don't, then what is the procedure to transfer mountain lion with my 4 user accounts onto the new ssd from the hdd?
I'm confused on if I can use the recovery hd on a thumb drive to install mountain lion on my ssd. Will it be pheasible with so many OS X upgrades? And then how do I get my user accounts onto the ssd from the hdd. Do I use migration assistant? Do I need to make a time machine backup first? Should I use something called Carbon Clone or something like that?
Thanks for readingIf you have a cable that connects and external HDD to the MBP, it will do. If it is something like this, an enclosure will not be needed for the swap:
An enclosure allows you to use your old HDD for storage or backup purposes. The cable will not.
Here are instructions as to how the swap can be performed using DISK UTITY. Substitute You cable for the enclosure in same:
INSTALLING A NEW HDD IN A MBP
1. Make certain that you have backed up all of your important data.
2. You will need a HDD enclosure. One with a USB connection will do. A 9 pin Firewire is better.
3. Install your new drive in the enclosure and connect it to your MBP.
4. Open DISK UTILITY>ERASE. From the left hand column drag the new drive into the 'Name' field. Make sure that the format is 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'. Click on the 'Erase' button.
5. Click on the 'Restore' button (on top). Drag the old drive into the 'Source' field and the new drive into the 'Destination' field. Click on the 'Restore' button on the bottom right hand corner.
Depending upon the amount of data you are transferring, this may take a couple hours or more. A Firewire will speed up the transfer. This will result in both drives having identical information on them.
6. After the data transfer has completed, you may swap the drives. Start the MBP and you have finished the installation. The initial boot may take a bit longer than you are accustomed to, but that is normal.
7. When you are satisfied that the new hard drive if functioning properly, you can erase the old drive and use it for any needs that you may have.
If there is any confusion on your part, post back.

Hello, I currently have Late 2009 MBP 2.53 Core 2 Duo, 4 GB DDR3, NVidia 9600M GT (activated).
I wanted to know if it is normal to have the CPU temperature at around 70 C and fan at 3300rpm with only FireFox running taking 15% of the CPU?
Also when i run a game the temperature peaks at 91 C fan at 6300rpm and starts to run slow, while it goes smooth at the beginning when CPU is at 80 C. (Game is L4D2 with Source engine)

Is there something to be concerned about?

Problem fitting Toshiba 750Gb HDD to late 09 MBP
I'm trying to fit a 750Gb Toshiba MK7559GSXP drive to my late 2009 MBP (a 2.53gig 15").
I can connect the drive via a USB-to-SATA interface, and it formats and copies beautifully. I've set it up with two partitions, and used both SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner to make copies of the two partions on my current drive - both SD and CCC report that the copy is bootable.
Installing it into MBP itself results in the ? folder icon after about 60 secs, and the machine refuses to boot from the Install DVD - the DVD drive just sits there 'scrubbing'. I can't get it to do a PRAM reset with this disk fitted, either.
Is there some fundamental incompatibility with this drive and the MBP? If so, does anyone have any experience with retrofitting a >500Gb HDD?What I'd recommend is putting the new drive in the MBP and starting over, do a re-format using the install disc that came with the computer or your Snow Leopard disc. You will need to put the disc in the computer, then restart the machine holding down the Option key. When it starts choose the disc and use DU to reformat the drive. Once the drive is formatted go back into the OS X install and install the OS X from the cd in the drive and finally restore your files from your SuperDuper copy or if you have a current back up on TM use that.

Late 2009 iMac i7 - Where to get screws to mount stand?
Does anyone know the part number(s) or where I can get the screws to re-mount the stand to my iMac?
I took it off the base to put it on a wall mount, but need to put it back on a table mount.

It's acting as if the temp sensor is not connected. I have it bookmarked amidst thousands of bookmarks but can't remember the name right now. There is some program out there that, in the absence of getting data from the internal sensor, will regulate the fan speed based on the SMART temp. If I think of it, I'll post back.

MBP late 2009 getting delays/timeouts while mount/dismount or plug/unplug

Running a MBP late 2009 with 3GHz, 8GB RAM and 500GB HDD (300GB free).
When I mount/dismount a drive it takes up to 1 min for the finder to respond again (getting the whirling ball).
When I plug/unplug headphones it takes up to 1 min for the finder to respond again
(getting the whirling ball).
Shutting down means it gets to to final screen and stays there for 2 min, then it powers down.
After any restart, it would mount/dismount plug/unplug fast (within 1 or 2 sec's). Then after a few min's, above behaviour starts.
So I do not get any crashes. I get delays where the finder is blocked for up to 1 min.
I updated to 10.6.4 some weeks ago and it started around that time.
What can I do?So I deleted cache files for various apps (incl. finder) and ran several tools (ie. mycleanmac) and still the same behaviour:
Whenever the finder has to update some settings, ie. disks, networks, screens, outputs... it hangs for a full minute and then goes on.
Any ideas?

SD card won't mount in core i7 iMac (late 2009)
I have a late 2009 core i7 iMac running 10.6.7. The only way to mount the various SD and SDHC cards I have is to boot with the card in the SD slot. If I don't do this the card is not mounted and is not visible in Disk Utility or System Profile.
Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

How do I remove a disk from my mac mini (late 2009)?
I am trying to regain my mac mini (late 2009) which came with OS X Snow Leopard. WHY? Because, after spending quite a few bucks, I have tried and failed to find a suitable substitute for APPLEWORKS. (I still have the disk)
I erased the Mac Mini's memory, so it is blank READY FOR me to install Snow Leopard. I still have 10.6.3 install disks.

1) After I put it in the MM,& started it up using my 10.6.3 install disk. The install app told me I couldn't install this system on this computer. WHY WHY?
2) Now I have a 10.6.3 disk stuck in the MM and I don't know how to get it out.

So now I have my Appleworks back too. YAH! -

I've now installed the ad blocker, thrown away the unwanted files, and thrown away a copy of Firefox that Adware said had a problematic extension.
Things are better, but still slow.
Activity Monitor shows that with just Mail, Chrome and Excel running, 2.9GB of my 4GB RAM is used. Opening InDesign (always slow) increase that to 3.2GB. But the graph stays green.
Console shows several potential problems but I don't know if any are significant. In any case I will call my Mac store tomorrow to ask their advice about RAM.

IMac (late 2009) really slow with all apps
I just recently have been having a huge problem with the speed of my iMac. It's a Late 2009 machine.
I am constantly having it freeze, with a spinning rainbow wheel, only to have it catch up with what I was typing, or trying to execute, after a few moments. This even happens when I only have one application running.

However, a few of things to try:
Disable Google Drive and test. In general, off-site backup software can slow the computer, and there are numerous reports here that the Google apps are still not playing well with Mavericks.
Disable 1Password and test. It's a long shot but it could be contributing.
The Etrecheck report shows you hard drive passes the SMART test but you may wish to boot into your recovery partition and run Disk Utility from there.
Historically, TomTom's software has not been as Mac-friendly as Garmin's. That is another "disable and test" version you can do.
Disabling doesn't remove the software, just lets you test without that component loading.

Can I trade/upgrade/remove and exchange the 1TB for a 2TB?If you mean success at offloading, I'm afraid there is no "quick" way of deciding what to move unless you want to move everything. If you need to be more selective about what you move to the external drive, then I would suggest using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.5.4. You can dig down into each folder in your /Home/ folder and select all the files you want to transfer. This is the fast way of copying them. However, then you must come through the folders in the Finder so that you can delete the files you transferred. No matter how you do it, it can be pretty tedius.
Alternatively, you could copy your entire /Home/ folder to the external drive then erase the Home folder on the internal drive and set OS X to boot using the Home folder on the external drive. The downside of this is that the external drive must always be connected, turned on, and mounted. You do this using the Users & Groups preferences.
A third alternative is to copy only the folders from your Home folder that contain most of your files - Documents, Downloads, Movies, Music, and Pictures. Copy only these folders to the external drive. Then create aliases to the folders on the external drive. When you do this the aliases will be named as, "foldername alias." Foldername refers to the actual folder name. Copy these aliases to the Home folder on your internal drive. Now comes the slight of hand. OS X will not let you remove the original folders as long as you are booted from that drive. So, open Terminal in your Utilities folder. Use this command line to first remove the original folders then rename the alias files by removing "alias" from their filenames:
cd ~/
sudo rm -Rf Documents ; mv Documents\ alias Documents
Press RETURN. You will be prompted to enter your admin password. What you type will not be echoed to the Terminal window. Press RETURN again. This will only occur this one time.
sudo rm -Rf Downloads ; mv Downloads\ alias Downloads
sudo rm -Rf Movies ; mv Movies\ alias Movies
sudo rm -Rf Music ; mv Music\ alias Music
sudo rm -Rf Pictures ; mv Pictures\ alias Pictures
This will cause OS X to look automatically for these folders and their contents on your external drive. The command line will first erase the original folder then rename the alias file to remove the word, "alias."
