Screwed up MBR and boot partition, can't fix it [SOLVED]
Hi,
I have been defeated. Been trying to fix my computer the whole day and know I'm lost.
It's a long story, but my whole system got screwed when I tried installing windows on top of arch (I didn't get it to install, but I don't care anymore).
I was able to install GRUB2, I tried configuring it with grub.cfg , but when trying to boot it says it's missing kernel, boot partition has linux2.6, and I was using linux 3, I'm not really sure how to get the kernel I was using, should it be in my root partition? .
I'd like to get my system as it was before, I have root , var and home partitions and not sure how.

I was using Arch, I last updated a few days ago.
The kernel that's on the boot partition is from a debian live cd I had laying around.
It is not possible I have more than one boot partition. I have 1 hard drive, but plenty of free space.
Windows wanted to use the start of my disk, so I used gparted to move 20 gb free space at the beginning. Creating a partition in the beginning also caused all partitions numbers to move up (sda2->sda3), when I gave up on windows, I tried moving everything forward like it was before, but it didn't work. Then I remembered that when installing grub, installers check for other mount points, but that didn't work, and instead overwrote my boot partition. So know I've got a temporary debian system installed(sda9) and a boot partition that won't boot Arch.
This is my fdisk output: sda5 is arch sd6 var and sd7 home

Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
You will have to re enter your Wi-Fi password.
No data is lost due to a reset.

From time to time when I click a searched link the color of visited links does not change. It works fine after I delete history and cookies. Can I fix that. I am using windows XP. Thanks
Here's the error message I get.
Note the TC is connected to my Airport Extreme via ethernet and my iMac is also connected to the AX via ethernet so it's not a wifi issue.
I can see the TC in the finder so it's not 'gone' from the network either.
Also note that just then the TM system pref pane was claiming a backup error, citing my 'network password' and still refusing to backup. I waited 5 minutes and did some tidying of my office while I pondered this and then tried again and voila it worked ok. -

You don't in the condition it's in. You will either have to get the phone replaced by Apple or pay a 3rd party to repair it.

When I try to File > Save As on an .FLV movie, Firefox automatically changes the filetype to .mp4 while Chrome for instance retains the .FLV file type. I wanted to see why this is and how it can be fixed to work similarly to Chrome. Thanks.
If that file is an FLV file then Firefox should save it as such and not change the file extension.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Try putting the iPod into disk mode:
Reset the device (press the Sleep and Volume Down buttons simultaneously until the display turns black—about eight seconds).
When the display turns black, hold down the Volume Down and Volume Up buttons simultaneously until the device enters Disk mode.
While the device is in disk mode, sync it to iTunes and try to restore.

Solaris Install overwrote MBR and first partition
I have an ABIT mobo with VIA chipset and a Sempron 2500 CPU, and WD 120 GB SATA drive. Not top of the line, but I'm on a budget. I have the SATA partitioned for multibooting, and I use XOSL multibooter. I have 3 OS's already, and several other partitions for backup. I was planning on installing Solaris on another extended partition. Kinda slow... kinda slow... hard to see the text on the monitor. Oh, the unofficial installation instructions says I should already have the partition set up, and recommends I use Ranish Partition Manager. Ranish is my favorite PM, so I quit the install, reboot to DOS, and set up a partition with Ranish. Hmmm. Solaris isn't a file type. What to do, what to do. Later in the installation instructions, it talks about the installer partioning the hard drive, so maybe I don't have to do it here. I'l leave this partition as FAT32, maybe Solaris will convert it, or I can use it for another backup, or data, or another OS. I exit and reboot to the install. Kinda slow, kind slow... now I don't see the dark text at all. Hmmm, reboot, restart. I get past the first few screens, but then it's just blank. I kick out the disk and reboot to .... nothing. now it won't boot to the hard drive. I reboot from floppy, the hard drive isn't there. Hmmm. Back to Ranish. The first partition (FreeDOS) has no data files in it, and is the wrong size, extending into the second partition space. The second partition isn't there, and there is unused space between the first and third partitions. Exit Ranish and go into PTS Disk Editor. Luckily I wrote down the hex code for the partition table, so I fix it back the way it should be. What was Solaris doing overwriting my MBR and partition table? I hadn't gotten to that point in the install yet to set up a new partition. Reboot, still nothing. Restore the MBR (I saved that too, plus the 62 sectors following). Reboot. Still nothing. Oh yeah, my FAT from partition 1 is gone, and who knows what else. What was Solaris doing overwriting that partition? Back to Ranish. Set partition 2 (Windows 2000) as my boot partition. Reboot. Phew! At least that comes up. I'm not too happy with Solaris trashing my MBR, partition table, and first partition. Yeah, yeah yeah, it won't be too hard to restore it. I'll assume my Linux is still working, although I haven't tried it yet. I think I'll wait to install Solaris until after I have a new, clean disk, and I'll be sure to disconnect this one until after the install is complete. Sorry Sun, your once-solid reputation has bounced down a few steps on this one.
this post on ranish.com does confirm that solaris overwrites the MBR. Please let me know what u did to overcome the problem because i want to install Solaris on a hard drive partition with XP on the other partition. Thanks,

Yes. You can. But you need to keep the following in mind:
1. Don't use the 'Installation CD'. It is not required. You might have problems if you
use this CD. Start with Software CD1.
2.If your software installation/booting fails with ACPI error, follow the instructions at:

(I did not get this error)
3. After installing CD1, you need to boot from the harddisk (solaris 9 would have overwritten
your MBR � Don't worry about this now; just proceed with the installation). Once it is booted
off the disk, after going thru few initializations again, it will prompt you to insert the second CD.
Insert CD2 and complete the installation.
4. Now, you can restore the RPM MBR. -

I'm guessing these two fie systems aren't mounted and the computer is seeing them as separate volumes?
So I guess I made a mistake during the install. This kind of explains a few things because when updating my kernel GRUB wasn't being updated as if the /boot partition wasn't mounted. I had to completely reinstall GRUB to have it point to the right kernel.
Is there a way to fix this and get these mounted how they need to be? Probably something with my fstab file?
When I installed I mounted my root, created /mnt/boot and /mnt/home, then mounted those to their own partitions that I had created.
I generated my fstab and checked it, and everything looked fine. I just don't know why everything else is just fine, but /boot and /home aren't mounted?
My partition scheme is GPT and looks like
/dev/sda1 -- bios boot
/dev/sda2 -- /boot
/dev/sda3 -- /
/dev/sda4 -- /swap
/dev/sda5 -- /home
I used UUIDs if that makes any difference.

My fstab file is restored but now when I start lightdm I get to my login screen, login, and have a black screen with just a cursor. All I did was run the install media, mount each partition (starting with root first). Then I turned my swap on.
After that, I ran
genfstab -U -p /mnt > fstab
I checked the fstab file, it looked like this

So I unmouted everything and turned swap off and went back into my system. The fstab file matched the output above. I started lightdm so i could get into xfce to see if the volumes were no longer on my desktop. However, now I get a black screen with a cursor. I let it sit for a while, but I ended up going into a tty and rebooting. Same issue. Black screen and cursor. I can see and login to lightdm just fine, but not my xfce DE.
I did try reinstalling lightDM and xfce4 and xfce4-goodies. Not xorg though. I'll try reinstallign it and see what that does.

Lost recovery partition, can be fixed?
Hi guys! i just buy a new P845-S4200 notebook and i try to create a new partition from 750GB with Acronis Disk Doctor and unfortunetly all my hdd crash, and all partition disapear.. i try to recover but not working..
the only solution was to delete all partitions and create new ones with a win7 dvd .. but i want to have my partitions with windows 7 x64 licence and all the drivers..
can anyone help me with and hdd image partions or other solution?
i also have big problme with wifi, only driver that work is Intel Wireless LAN Driver(v15.0.1.1; 02-13-2012; 8.49M)
and wifi apear Intel centrino N200 but the association with my AP not working, also with another AP..same problem..

Restoring the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media will replace the partition with the image of the hard disk and should fix the WiFi.

I can copy and paste on this website with internet explorer, but not with firefox. I can not perform all the website functions with the internet explorer brower and switching back and forth from browser to browser is very time consuming and a hassle. connect to a computer with itunes and restore phone, before you connect the phone to the computer get the phone off and hold the home button while you connect the phone to the computer and you want to keep holding the home button till the phone shows the connect to itunes. ITunes then will say that if found a device in recovery mode.

My macbook has got stuck in a reinstalling loop with mavericks and cannot be utility can't fix it. nothing was backed up. I have an empty external drive formated extended journal and am attempting to recover them thru directory but the usual command of diskutil did not recognize the verb "mount/dev/disk1" at the top of the directory it says -bash-3.2hashtag (I don't have the symbol on this pc). so I am unable to mount my hard drive (how do i even know if its unmounted?) can anybody help me please
