Screwing down motherboard in HP G62 b29SA - unused holes in motherboard?

I've been fixing a friend's G62 b29SA laptop (just replacing the fan). There was some time between taking it apart and putting it back together (had to get the right fan) so I can't remember whether all the holes in the motherboard had screws in them. In quite a lot the screws just turn and turn - there's no thread behind the motherboard or the screws are too small (but I don't think I have any larger screws (or at least none that aren't from another section (e.g. the battery compartment or whatever). Should all the holes in the motherboard have screws?

Hi,
No, some of them do not have screws BUT all screws must have holes. Please check the following manual to see all screw locations (check page #79):

  • Screw down CPU fans fo socket A

Hi guys. I work at a system builder. We've been having problems with heatsinks comin off the socket during shipping. FedEx throws them too hard and they end up banging up the inside of the case.
I have seen heatsinks that screw on the mount holes in socket motherboards, but they are very overpriced. We build budget systems and barebones. Is there a manufacturer that makes cheap screo-down socket a heatsinks. Or some sort of retention mechanism.

unfortunately fedex is so rough with the systems that the fans will fly off
i think about 3-5% of the systems we send out ged damaged like this.
we use thermalatke volcano 8 fans that use all six clips, and unincom fans that also use all six clips

  • Compressor 4.1.2 slowing down my computer until it is unusable

    Hey all,
I'm using an iMac (specs below) and I have the latest versions of FCPX and Compressor (4.1.2). I've had a HUGE number of issues with the new Compressor update, specifically when it comes to 4K video. I'll take a project that is in 4K, OR that I shot in 4K and downscaled to 1080p by making the FCPX Project specs 1080p, then I "Send to Compressor."
Then I try to export from Compressor using default 1080p settings to my desktop.
Previous versions of Compressor would take their time  in giving me my final project, but would otherwise leave my computer unaffected. However, Compressor 4.1.2 is slowing down my computer to the point where it is unusable. Moving windows/folders around on the desktop takes forever to load. I can't browse the internet or do ANYTHING when Compressor is doing its thing now.
Interestingly, when I export using FCPX's "share" function, I have no problems.
Help! Is there anything I can do with Compressor to stop it from destroying my computer memory every time I export something in 1080p from 4K? Is anyone experiencing the same problems?
    Thanks!
    Specs:
iMac: 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048MB

If you have system backups, you can probably restore to an earlier version. That would take care of your needs prospectively. Any libraries that had been updated, would;t open in an earlier version of FCP X. But of course, your master files could be used in both Final Cut and Compressor.
Also, send your results to Apple using the Provide Compressor Feedback link in the Compressor drop down menu.

  • Computer shuts down with restart message-iMac practically unusable

    Hey,
I have a problem with my iMac. Every time I login, I can browse the internet and use the computer fine, however it will show this gray screen with a large symbol of the power button and a message in about three different languages saying that I have to restart my computer. It does this very often now, in fact a lot of times I can't even login because the computer freezes right after I turn it on. I recently installed the new Leopard to see if maybe that would help fix the problem, but it didn't seem to make a difference. I'm not sure what to do at this point. My computer is basically unusable since it shuts down every 5 minutes, or even RIGHT after it has been restarted from a freeze.
When it freezes, it usually takes a while too. For example, the seconds on the clock stop, then I get the spinning color wheel. After a few more seconds or minutes, the gray screen with the power button shows and says to restart. Any ideas? I'm pretty sure I have the latest updates installed.
    Thanks in advance

Installing a new operating system to fix errors such as these usually does not fix such problems. New operating systems typically just add features. If you erase and installed the operating system, and you get a 4 language error message like this, you have a hardware issue. If you installed additional software, it is trickier to figure out if it is a hardware or software issue. This 4 language error is known as a kernel panic. Essentially what has happened is some driver, which is a communication peripheral communications software, or basic operating system command has become unusable due to data corruption or incompatibility. Tell us what you have connected to your Mac that is not factory standard, and what you have installed.

  • Can't find fan header - G62 b29SA

My friend owns an HP G62 laptop. He said that the fan stopped working and I couldn't hear or feel it so I got a new fan and we opened the laptop up. It turned out that the fan I'd bought was not compatible. Later, I tested the fan using a 3 V supply and it worked just fine. I went to plug the fan in and I can't find the header! Could it have been knocked off the motherboard? I don't see it and I don't know how to proceed.

  • Motherboard replacement for G62

I have an HP G62 laptop computer. It stopped working a few months ago so I bought anothe laptop.
There is a blue led light that blinks once every 3 seconds which apparently means the motherboard has been damaged or is not functioning.
I am wondering if I can replace and upgrade the motherboard to get the thing working again. I don't want to just replace with a like for like but would like to upgrade to a better processor etc at the same time if the cost is not too much.
Is there a list of motherboards that will fit in the case of this laptop that I can consider purchasing?
Does this make sense as a project or would I be wasting my time and effort?
The case and the monitor are in excellent shape so I  would like to consider this as a project. I have put together desktop PCs before but not upgraded a laptop.

  • Laptop won't turn on - the power adapter light flashes three times? G62 b29SA

I've been replacing the fan in my friend's laptop. I had a problem with the trackpad not working after I put it back together and that problem is not yet resolved but I have another problem preventing me from getting further. Now when I press the on button, the power adapter light (next to the socket for the external power) flashes three times and that's all. It flashes again three times every time I press the power button. It does this even with an external power source plugged in (I'm pretty sure that it's supposed to just stay on constantly when the charger is plugged in but the power source I have is a universal one set to 19 V - it has powered up with this plugged in before but I don't know whether it was taking charge from it). Any advice?

I got the charger from my friend and now it boots up just fine. There seem to be many meanings to the three flashes based on my Internet searches but in this case it appears that it's some way of indicating a low battery.

  • Blue & White motherboard replacement

    Hi,
I own a Blue & White G3 350 with an original motherboard (not the Rev2). I'd like to buy a Rev2 motherboard and do a swap. The Rev2 motherboard that I am looking to buy has a G3 450 processor on it. One look at my list of Macs at the bottom of this post (I still own them all) will tell you that I'm no stranger to the Mac platform. I have upgraded hard drives/optical drives, RAM, video and audio cards, but have never attempted anything like a complete motherboard replacement. How easy is it and is there anything special I need to do? Also, would there be any compatibility issues regarding the systems from one revision to the next?
    Thanks in advance...

You will need a grounding wrist strap and a #2 Phillips screwdriver. When you get all the screws out, the board slides about 1/4 inch away from the backpanel and then you lift it gentely up and out.
When you are done, you may need to do a firmware update, which requires some version of Mac OS 9 on a Hard drive (not just a CD).
A PRAM backup battery anywhere near 3.2 Volts in your hand will be dead soon.
Superstition says that if it will not start after the swap, even with a good battery and a CUDA Reset, holding down command Option P R while you press the start button on the keyboard may give better results.

  • MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR Nforce2 (Socket A) Motherboard (MB-003-MS) Features NF2 chip

I tried to install 3 of the Crucial Ballistix Tracer (1 Gig Each) in this motherboard (MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR Nforce2 (Socket A) Motherboard (MB-003-MS) Features NF2 chipset) and it will not run stabilly no matter what I tried. Is this a bios conflict with the memory? If so, are there any new bios updates? I have tried cas settings and voltage settings but nothing works. It will how ever run perfectly with only 2 sticks in single channel mode. It will not run same 2 sticks in dual channel mode. Anyone have any ideas? Anyone know of any new motherboards with maybe NFORCE 4 Chipset that support all 3 sticks of this memory and an AGP graphics card? Im thinking of a new motherboard but I still need to have AGP and SATA.

Ok I tried to use relaxed FSB by -10 and relaxed mem timings but still unstable due to the motherboard trying to use dual channel memory. If you can modify the bios to where it will not have the capability of dual channel memory I truly believe it will work. Will u try this for me? I would greatly appreciate it as I am really not ready to spend all the money on new equipemtn when this suits my needs for now.
sure but as i said before this is gona be experimental and risky. Here we go:
MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR Experimental MOD E1(Disable Dual CH ability)
Procedure is automated in best possible safest way to BIOS update.
Prepare a blank diskette in a good condition(newest one etc.)
]execute file under XP will make bootdisk with automated BIOS update procedure. when diskette is ready, reboot PC and boot from FDD(floppy), wait a bit, then you will be asked for final confirmation about BIOS update process, press a key to proceed, after BIOS update is complete, ensure that you got successfully output message from flash program. then power down your PC, remove power cord from the PSU, hit power button several time to drain caps electrify, touch with hands some metal for ES discharge, and Clear CMOS.
pull back power cord, power up your PC, when you see CMOS checksum error,(expected msg) hit F1 to continue to re-build DMI pool data, then reboot and enter in BIOS, LOAD BIOS DEFAULT, and SAFE AND EXIT.
NOTE: Ensure your PC is stable before proceed with BIOS update.
NOTE: Use it at own risk, chance of failure is big, cannot guarantee results and safest as provisional mode which can guarantee it will work stable with features. also cannot test it personally before give you. (don't have mobo anymore)
Using it may end with dead mainboard (BIOS chip re-flash will be required, if somethink goes wrong)

  • [Share]Cooling down 970 Gaming!

    From MSI TW Forum
    link:https://forum-tc.msi.com/index.php?topic=113191.0
The story happened in a frigid night few weeks ago. I turned on my computer since I want to play Watch Dog, which is a very popular game recently. Huh? No response? I tried several times and wondering if I forgot to connect the plug? But I never unplug my socket! After some easy tests, I reckon the computer is dead…but I’ve just got chapter 2 of my Watch Dog!!!
I sent my computer to fix station immediately, hoping they can save my computer’s life. After a few minutes, the clerk announced frigidly “The motherboard is dead.”
One thing is still lucky, my FX-4170 and R7850 are still alive! For a new PC, I decided to replace and upgrade the original one with an AM3+ motherboard. The shop owner showed some AM3+ motherboards to me, one is MSI 970 Gaming, and this is the first time we met. :> Of course, I took it home.
    My equipment:
    CPU: AMD FX-4170
RAM: Vengeance Low Profile 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 Kit
    MB: AMD 970 GAMING
    VGA: R7850 Twin Frozr 2GD5/OC
    PSU: ENERMAX Platimax 750W CrossFireX
    COOLER: Thermaltake Frio Advanced
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit
Except the cooler and motherboard, the rest are old ones.
For the heatsink design, I really like the dragon, and the cooling effect seems great.
There are only 2 USB 3.0 ports for rear IO, but you can expand with front panel.
The capacitors next to Audio Boost look very powerful.
Here is a weak point, 8 pin port of power supply is too close to heat sink, so it’s easy to get stuck if you have fat fingers…
Heat sink panel is designed with nice hair texture with classic MSI dragon shield.
    And my old friend FX-4170.
I upgrade my normal stock fan to a Thermaltake tower fan and assemble it for ten minutes with manual…
You need to take the original stand off if you need a tower fan. The new stand of tower fan looks better!
The point of this photo is the height of tower fan. For my memory the height is fine but higher level memory, like OC memories,  could get stuck because there is not enough space.
This motherboard is not too hot when it goes with normal stock fan, the worst situation is a little hot when you touch it. After use tower fan, the temperature is always between 35-42 degrees; in addition, the heat sink becomes just a little warm. I can say 970 Gaming’s heat sink design is quite good and got great result of cooling, if you use extra two fans, you  can reach much lower degrees.
The temperature is CPU constantly running half hour with 100%, the highest degree so far is 52 degrees. I think it’s low enough, because I’ve seen some CPU temperature up to 20 degrees for watching YouTube only. Therefore, I believe the importance of heat sink and fans match or not.
Of course using AMD with low temperature works very smoothly, Watch Dog can run with full mode although there  is a little latency, so just need to switch down a bit and you can enjoy it! Finally, I assembled my new computer and continue my Watch Dog. :D Although the equipment almost same with the old version, but I can feel better performance from new motherboard! In the past, use all the effect with full mode has more latency than now.
    變成了這個有希望的姿勢了…
There is a story behind the pic. When I was going to the mission location happily and found out this person robbing poor people. At that time, my justices tell me to give the poor people a help, so I knock down the robber and kick his ass “accidently “, then he laid down with this “hope pose”…
Let’s end with view of the back of Aiden Pearce.

On this motherboard are going to be aimed at gaming only, so MSI avoids adding in power/reset buttons as well as a two-digit debug which we might see on more expensive models. MSI also eschews the OC Genie button on this board, which is a shame as a basic OC would help this platform in general. Providing a lookup table of overclocks takes time for each CPU range to be considered, and perhaps it is not worth the time on the 970 chipset.

  • Delete unused footage in iMovie 10.0.6

I have used previous versions of iMovie and found that I was able to delete any unused footage in a clip.  For example you had a video clip that was 2 minutes long, but you only used a 10 second snip of it in a project you could delete the remaining 1 minute and 50 seconds which was great in clearing your hard drive. I was able to do this by selecting a folder then holding down command and delete buttons, delete unused footage. In iMovie 10.0.6 I can't seem to be able to do this or find a simular feature.  Any ideas?

    Hello Yanuar Tourniquet,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! The new iMovie interface includes a few video effects that may achieve what you want. For information on how to apply these effects to your clips, check out the following resource:
Add video and audio effects - iMovie Help

  • EMac shuts down when bumped.

I have an eMac 1.42 GHz PowerPC G$ w/ 256 RAM, OS 10.4. The machine runs quite fine most of the time (i'm using it right now..); but it shuts down, hard down, when it is bumped or knocked. It is in a school, on a desk, and schoolbooks get put down on the bench next to it; or a child will lean his/her elbows on it and bang, down it goes. I have had a technically inclined person investigate inside, to a reasonable extent, and everything seems to be screwed down tight or plugged in tight or inserted in the right places and latched. Still the machine shuts down. It will do this with peripherals attached or not (such as keyboard...) It will usually restart when the on button is pushed, but I need to have it running, not restarting all the time. To the best of my knowledge it is not under warranty for burst capacitors, according to the serial number. (It does not seem to have any burst or leaking caps anyway...) It is not under any type of warranty, and I can't really afford a significant amount of money to repair the thing. It's getting to the point where it's more fun to whap the left side with my fist and watch it shut down, than to use it. This, however, is counterproductive. I am open to suggestions and hope for the best.

I have tried several different power cords. Same result. However, I will check inside the case to look for loose contacts at the power-in juncture. Nothing was evident previously, on an inspection. A detailed and closer look is definitely called for. I had been thinking maybe the collar around the CRT tube, or something; though I don't exactly know how to go testing that; and it rather frightens me to try to discharge one of those things...

  • Badly Screwed?

Pardon the title.. it's late, and I'm sober, but a bit punchy... =^D
Has anyone else had problems fully seating some of the 3mm screws after take apart? In the 300+ successful Mac laptop repairs which involve a total or almost total take-apart (part of my consulting is resurrecting Mac laptops/notebooks by replacing bad screens, HDs, keyboards, etc., and I've been told by several experienced (9+ years or so) Certified Apple Techs that my ju-jitsu's pretty good, good enough to be easily laptop certified in both hardware and software), this has never happened. 00 phillips (brand new), no visible Loctite (only visible on the 3 14mm screws)...
I gently press the center of the 17" MBP bottom case downward as I gently find the thread on the 3mm, after threading just shy of first 'tension', all the other 'easy' screws... I begin to turn with some firmness, straight down, and I get progressive tightness, until.. nothing. WILL NOT turn any further, with maybe a 1.5-2 turns to go before flush. Several 3mm screws will go flush, at least 5-6, every attempt. I've even 'swapped' 3mm screws, to ascertain that some 3mms may thread more easily in different holes, no joy.
The back cover seems to be a kinda monocoque, 'stressed member' of the case; when screwed down, it becomes a tightly stretched piece that appears to add stiffness and rigidity to the entire case. This is why the screw-holes appear to be 'off-center' until I gently press down on the center of the bottom of the case as I start the screws in.
Anyway, back to the saga... tried starting over, placing the back cover on, pressing in gently at the center, and also 4-5" in from the screw-hole I'm threading a 3mm screw into, always careful to line up each hole before 'backing up the screw until 'starting' the thread forward.
I've tried different tightening patterns, progressive, cross-tightening, round-robin tightening, you name it- both 3mm corner screws (latch side) NEVER go flush, and 3 other 3mm screws are close, but not flush like before I started with a 500 GB 7200 rpm HD and 8GB RAM upgrade.
Any advice? I'm uneasy about visiting an Apple Store Genius Bar, an independent Mac service company, or any place I can't 'accompany' my 17" 'business partner', which is a lot of places, I'm quickly learning!
I've not stripped any holes nor Phillips tops yet, but I've put holes two pair of Patagonia pants in the last week (before the Rain Designs laptop desk showed up from Small Dog- yum!), and this is really a vexing problem... I'm embarrassed to admit I'm completely stumped! :^/

Well, Rudy- you're right, and thanks for the heads-up with regard to OWC's upgrade/case-cracking of the 17" unibody video, because I just went with your advice without looking at the video; I could envision the solution you described... worked like a charm, no stripped threads, no loose screws, looks and feels (screw friction when seating-wise), like factory-spec!
I went ahead and bookmarked the OWC video you mentioned, so that I can refer my more adventurous clients who are dead-set on attempting this themselves..

if anyone has a similar issue, thank Rudy!
Again, thanks to all you guys for the constructive, informed input!

  • Cutting down clips permanently.

Is there a way to cut down clips with a lot of unusable footage permanently? Ideally, I would like to make alterations in the viewer window and then move them back to the browser window. That way I can save hard drive space and not waste time with too much extra crap.
And can I split a clip into two separate clips permanently in the viewer window?

Final Cut is a nondestructive editor. No amount of editing in FCE is going to reduce the amount of disk space your captured clips take up or physically split a clip that exists on your HD.
You can open a clip in the Viewer, set In & Out points and drag the result onto the Canvas or Timeline; and you can do that repeatedly to the same original clip, setting different In & Out points each time. That gives you different clips on the timeline but it neither duplicates the original clip nor does it physically split the original clip.
The only 2 ways I know of to minimize disk usage is either 1) use Capture Clip (instead of Capture Now) to get just the parts you want from your tapes or 2) export the parts you want to QT files and then reimport them back into FCE, after which you could delete the original clips.

I am assuming this is a motherboard issue? any help appreciated

    >I am assuming this is a motherboard issue?
Yes, it looks like the motherboard is affected.
This assumption might be correct since other possible troublemakers have been checked and this did not solve your problem.
Im not quite sure if motherboard replacement is an option in this case since such part is not cheap. I guess would need to check if its an option for you or maybe buying new notebook would be a better solution.
