Script to change Safari Preferences

Hello,
I'm trying to build a script to change Safari Preferences :
"Tell Application Safari"
Set the default browser as "Safari"
End Tell
But it does not work...
I will need it to make this change on a lot of Macs from Apple Remote Desktop.
Do you know where are located the Apple Script Commands in Safari ?

Changing Safari preference for user template

Hello All,
This is my first time on the Apple Forums so thank you in advance for looking at my post. Now to the main point of why I'm here. I'm currently trying to set the Safari Preference from "Top Sites" to "HomePage" on a bunch of iMacs running 10.8.5. with Safari 6.2. I have set the homepage to the needed URL executing a JAMF command since we use their software to manage all of our Macs. Although that command is great and worked well, Safari is set to open to "Top Sites" by default. I know I can do this by executing this command:
defaults write com.apple.Safari NewWindowBehavior -int 0
Now this changes the value in my User/Library/Preferences/ folder yet I need this to be applied for ANY user and any EXISTING user on the computer.
The JAMF command made it easy by adding a -feu -fut options so I can change it for existing users as well as the user template. How could I change this for the user template? Any help is appreciated.

Ok, more info... almost everything is working fine, uMask aside. What isn't working is the sidebar in the Finder windows. The shortcuts in the sidebar are making absolute references instead of referencing the local user. E.g. "Documents" in "NewUser"'s account ispointing back to /Users/OriginalUser/Documents
This is probably a setting in the local user's Finder preferences, but wow... that's a pain to deal with.
Any thoughts?

I cannot change any safari preferences in mavericks

i attempt to change my safari preferences such as toolbar, homepage, default search engine, and other preferences, but it keeps returning to the previos settings. i cannot even reset all of the top sites in safari

Might be corrupted Safari preferences ...
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari then try changing Safari preferences.

I can't be sure, but what probably happens is that the page doesn't give you a link to a downloadable file, but a button which activates a script. There's nothing you can do about that, because you don't control the script.

It sounds like the downloaded file does not open or execute as it's supposed to (which, for instance, would happen if what you downloaded was a Java application, but you didn't have Java installed).
If you are allowed to, give us the URL and we'll have a look. Also, you should add what version of Mac OS X and of Safari you are using, and you should correct your profile (which says "Mac Pro" -- this forum is for the MacBook Pro, which is a different computer from the Mac Pro).

Before every time I use to open a new tab it comes as top site. Now not anymore and instead is an automatically website calle Only Search. I went to Safari preference I change everything and when I quit Safari all the changes are gone.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "Downlite" or "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the support article, you may also need to remove this item in the same way:
~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.

The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This malware is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.

My safari preferences/ security screen has changed and no longer addresses cookies. There is now a Preferences/Privacy screen that allows one to delete cookies, although it is harder to do than the older security screen. Was this an update?

Rather, there is a new Preferences/Privacy screen that allows you to manipulate cookies, but it is not as easy to use as when cookies were on the security screen. Was this an update? Has this change affected anyone else? This is strange, because Safari Help still states cookies are manipulated on the Security screen, even though the screen has changed and no longer addresses cookies.

Presuming you're referring to Safari 5.1, yes, it's moved, but I don't see it as being harder. Now you can clear all privacy-related items - cookies, cache and history - with one button, the "Remove All Website Data" button. If you want to work with individual cookies, it's still just one button, the "Details" button. So no, I don't see it as being more difficult.

How do I get rid of Bing and adware on my macbook? I have changed the preferences on Safari to google, and tried to download an adware remover, but things are now worse!

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
If Safari crashes on launch and you don't have another web browser, you should be able to launch Safari by starting up in safe mode.

I have enabled pop ups through safari preferences but a website is still saying that they must be enabled. I have tried this on other browers after quiting and restarting after changing the preferences

How about extensions? Perhaps you have an adblock extension installed.
Check Safari > Preferences > Extensions

Safari preferences are changed without my permission

Safari preferences for cookies are changed from "Third parties...etc" to "Never" without any action on my part and the very annoying "MacKeeper" program pops up all the time. I would like to be able to eliminate whatever is causing these pop ups.

Safari Preferences Will Not Open

Hi,
Have a weird Safari issue:
When I go to Safari->Preferences or use the key combo, nothing happens. The preferences window will not open.
Also a list of other issues:
     The "find" (apple F) option is greyed out for all webpages.
     "Reset Safari" is greyed out.
     An inordinate number of popups.
It thought maybe adware, but its a fresh install of Yosemite with no safari extensions. Scanned for adware with AdwareMedic, nothing. Nothing with ClamXav. No Mackeeper, no geneio. I've run out of possibilities! Any ideas?
It's safari 8.0.3 (though was happening with the previous version as well), on 10.10.2. Firefox is also getting a lot of popups, but can "find".

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:

The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it. Then go to the next step.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Unable to set cookie preferences in safari 5.1.5 by going to safari/preferences/privacy. It used to be there and now there is nothing showing under that tab.

I had looked at the cookies a couple of weeks ago. I deleted all cookies.
A few days ago my email was hacked into which sent a spam email to all my contacts. I changed my password to that account, warned everyone in my contacts, and haven't had a problem with email since.
However, I tried to do the 'delete all cookies' again and when I go to safari/preferences/privacy...there is nothing on that screen under that tab. Not even a question mark. I changed my history items to be removed every day from every week but don't think that would be the issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Uninstall SIMBL as follows.
Select Go ▹ Go to Folder… from the Finder menu bar, then enter the following text in the box that opens:

A folder will open. From that folder, delete the items listed below (some may be absent.) You may be prompted for your administrator login password.

InputManagers/SIMBL.bundle
LaunchAgents/net.culater.SIMBL.Agent.plist
ScriptingAdditions/SIMBL.osax
Log out and log back in.
Make sure you never reinstall SIMBL. It’s likely to come bundled with another third-party system modfication that depends on it. If you want trouble-free computing, avoid software that makes miraculous changes to other software, especially built-in applications. The only real exception to that rule is Safari extensions, which are mostly safe, and are easy to get rid of when they don’t work. SIMBL and its dependents are not Safari extensions.

How do I change Safari's assumed and unwanted email address?

I can't for the life of me find where Safari stores my preferred email address.
This becomes trouble when click on an email address within a web page. Craigslist, for instnace.
Safari assumes I want to send email from my google mail address. I don't .
I want to send it from my Mac Mail app.
How can I change this preference?
P.S. My address book card for myself lists my Mac Mail address (the one I want) and does not list my google mail address.

Is it possible to script language change in OSX Lion ?

I recently purchased a Disney game (Cars 2) from the App Store, which advertises being available in 5 languages. It seems now that the game has no in-app options to change language, but selects the language based on OSX settings (but otherwise the app doesn't use ANY of the GUI elements from the OS).
My Mac's are all set up in English, in the account on which my kid plays the game doesn't have administrator rights (for good reasons). He doesn't master the English language enough and would like to play the game in dutch. On the other hand, when using Safari and other apps, he is used to the English user interface.
Is it possible to create a script that changes the Finder language to Dutch, then forces Finder Quit, then launches the App, and after quitting the App reverses the Finder Change ? (or if not in one step, maybe in a number of subscripts), so that I can let my kid enjoy his game in dutch without me having to be present each time to change the system settings ?

Tom, thanks, this works perfectly. In older days, I have been a programmer on Mac (long before even the PowerMac days), and back then I would have used ResEdit to do something similar as what you suggested. Since those days are long gone, I was not sure if it was possible to change the resources of an app without extensive coding software, but the trick you just showed me seems to be the current-day equivalent of ResEdit ...

Safari Preferences : Can no longer see passwords:

I'm using Safari 6.1, OS 10.8.5.
I just went to retrieve a password that I'd forgotten, by going to Safari>Preferences>Passwords.
It hasn't ever been changed. I used to be able to click and put my master password in, to enable me to see my passwords.
FWIW: Autofill user names and passwords is checked.
Show all passwords for selected websites is checked.
Nothing else is checked. Confused ...why it is no longer working?
