Script to open application, and to quit if already open
I already have the script for launching one or more applications, and I could make a new one to quit them, but I was hoping it could be made into the same script. Can this be done?
and what if there's two applications I want to run/quit?
Easy solution: Just copy the code and paste it as many times as you need, changing the app names as you go.
Complex solution: add a list of app names and iterate through the list.
For the most part, if you have a relatively small number of apps, and the list is pretty static (i.e. doesn't change much), then I'd go with option 1.

This is a possible solution:
Open up Activity Monitor and search for the process genredetection.
Quit this, and iTunes should then behave properly and quietly quit when you want it to.
If the process is not running check your ~/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins
and disable any present to see if they are the cause.
I create a folder iTunes Plug-ins Disabled to put them in.

How to save a list of open applications and files?
Many times I need to turn off my computer but I have many things open. A friend tells me to use <sleep> but sometimes I have to still turn off my computer for a reason. Is there a way to create a list of all the open applications and files that when I turn on my computer I know where I last worked? Maybe there is a way to do this automatically without writing down on paper? My english is not the best and I am sorry. Thank you.
Thank you Smokerz and ademsemir. I like alot both ideas that you have. Sometimes I will use one and sometimes I will use the other one. Maybe I can explain better what I am thinking to do. If I have 4 applications that I am using and different files in applications I hope to make a list of everything. I use Excel, Word, Preview, and Mail all the time. If I leave open emails when I close Mail then the same emails will open when I run Mail the next time. That is perfect for me. Excel, Word, and Preview only show the recent files I use if I close the applications and use them later. If I use shiftcommand4 it helps me alot because I click on Window and take a picture of the open files. I like shiftcommand3 also it helps if I use Expose and take a picture of the screen but the files with long names will cut off.
I try also Activity Monitor and Force Quit because they show me applications that I use but they do not show the files. If I have alot of things open in Firefox that I will use again but do not have time I use Bookmark All Tabs.
It is ok if you do understand what I ask. What you told me will help me. Thank you. -

All windows are shown by default, unless you minimize them, so I'm confused at what you are asking. -
I have MBP retina 15". My track pad is not working well. It moves by itself, create folders, opens applications and I have to go against to it.
Do you have BlueTooth device with depleted battery nearby?
If that is not the case, you have to take the computer to the nearest
Apple store to have it checked out.

I have iPhone 4 and phone lately unresponsive, you press application and takes a vile to open and typing is really slow and logy. Any ideas how to fix it?

When I now use the cmd-tab shortcut to go to a different open application it madly scrolls through all the open applications and does not let me select one. Any ideas as to what might be wrong. It doesn't appear to be a sticking key?
Problem with the cmd-tab keyboard shortcut now cured with the latest software update, so the original problem must have been a software glitch.

To prevent this being accidentally activated in the future go to SystemPreferences>Keyboard>Keyboard Shortcuts>Universal Access and uncheck all the boxes.

My track pad stopped working with a single finger/double click when I try to open emails, and when I try to open apps on desk top. If I use two fingers, and then click open, I can open them. Thank You for your help.

Spotlight opens Microsoft Word document underneath an already open document
New Lion Feature. If you quit an app that has open windows and documents, it will restore state when restarted; in other words, reopen all the stuff it that was previously open. That's why the new document gets bumped underneath the old.
If too avant-garde for your tastes, visit the General pane in System Preferences and uncheck "Restore windows when quitting...". -
Firefox won't open because it says it is already open when it ain't
Firefox won't open because it says it is already open. It appears Firefox is operating in the background. Tried to remove it but we get the same message to log out of Firefox. For 10 years we have been using McAfee with all features but it does not detect any virus or malaware etc. It appears it might be a malaware problem but even using all the latest Microsoft fixes hasn't helped. We used Vista Business Professional with all the latest service packs updated. We use the latest version of Firefox as of up to around 3 weeks or so ago when this issue first appeared.
I suspect you need more expert help but here are a few things you can try.
If you can't open Firefox(double click on Firefox desktop icon) try Safe Mode - Hold down the Shift Key as you double click on the icon>don't check anything on the page that opens>continue. If Firefox opens and works in this safe mode go to Add-ons> Extensions and look for "Ask". Then look at Add-ons >Plug-ins and again look for "Ask" . Remove, delete,disable any Asks. If you do remove any, close Firefox. And try again in Normal Mode.
The Ask website has detailed instructions for removal but you need to find it on your computer and have your computer in working order.
If there is no sign of Ask and Firefox is working well in Safe Mode you should work your way through this -

Eventually you might need to grapple with About:Config and even your Windows Registry but I would recommend a complete uninstall and re-install before that. Unfortunately that often doesn't work.
That all sounds very daunting but taken step-by-step you might get lucky early. -
When I was working on my G mail account , Mail quit and I can no longer re-open it ! Each time I try and open mail I get this message: The last time you opened Mail, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again? and When I try and open it, I can't.
I followed some discussions like Safe Mode and deleting folder of Library/Containers/com.apple.mail and trashing Library/Mail/.../v2 but unfortunately none of them didn't work!

Step 1
If Mail crashes or freezes immediately on launch, try the steps suggested on this page. Sometimes a corrupt message on a mail server can be deleted by logging in to the server through its web page. If Mail still won't launch, skip to Step 3.
Step 2
Select all your mailboxes, and then select
Mailbox ▹ Export Mailbox...
from the Mail menu bar. Export the mailboxes to the Desktop folder.
Make a note of the settings for all your Mail accounts – everything you'd need to reconstruct the settings from scratch.
Quit Mail.
Step 3
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. Move the following items (some may not exist) from the folder that opens to the Desktop:
Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr
Containers/com.apple.corerecents.recentsd
Containers/com.apple.mail
Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Mail
Note: you are not moving the Mail application. You’re moving a folder named “Mail.”
Launch Mail. It will behave as if you were setting it up for the first time. Go through the setup process with one of your accounts, using the information you noted earlier. Test. If Mail works now, recreate the rest of your settings.
If there’s no improvement, quit Mail and put back the items you moved to the Desktop, replacing any newer ones that may have been created in their place. Stop here and post your results.
Step 4
This step should not be necessary with IMAP or Exchange mailboxes, because they synchronize automatically with the server. Nevertheless, if the mailboxes are very large, importing them may spare you the need for a long download.
If you took Step 2, import the mailboxes you exported:
File ▹ Import Mailbox...
Select Apple Mail as the data type.
If you skipped Step 2, look inside the Mail folder on the Desktop for a subfolder Mail/V2/Mailboxes. Import the mailboxes it contains.
Test. If Mail is still working, delete the items you moved to the Desktop in Step 3. -
Word, Photoshop, Illustrator and others quit unexpectedly on opening, over and over again
I keep getting "problem reports" when trying to open applications that have worked fine for years.
Microsoft Word, Photopshop, Illustrator an Avery CD Sticker maker all give me the problem report window with the yellow trianlge and exclmation point when I try to open them and say:
"____ has quit unexpectedly. Click reopen to open the application again. This report will be sent to Apple automatically."
Clicking reopen offers the same thing again, and again, and again..
It started yesterday with Photoshop and Illustrator, so I took them off my computer and tried to reinstall them. Now I get "Install Photoshop has quit unexpectedly. etc.."
I ran the disc utility and it said my hard drive was OK.
Help! All the programs I use regularly are affected.I took the laptop to the Apple genius store and after two and a half hours of trouble shooting it turned out my User Profile no longer had permissions to open those programs. And they couldn't be changed. They had no idea why this could happen, but the genius set up another User, gave it permission and deleted the first one. Problem solved. Whew! He's never seen sanything like this before.
Gotta love the Geniuses at the genius bar! -
Saving and restoring sets of open applications and documents
Sometimes I have to restart when I have 20 to 30 Word and Excel files, websites, etc., open for work. It's time-consuming to go back and open them all up and get them positioned on various virtual desktops so I can get back to productive work, and every time I do it I swear there's got to be a utility that will save the state of these applications and their open documents for later restoration. Yet I've never been able to find an application to do this. Has anyone dealt with this issue successfully?
Thanks.AFAIK, when you select Restart, you should get a dialog box for each unsaved, open document that allows you to save it, before the app will quit. If that's not working, then you should manually save the open documents and quit the app before you restart.
