Scripting brush strokes on smart filter mask

Hi guys, I am a complete newbie to all this so forgive me if this is a stupid question.
I am having problems when trying to record brush strokes on a smart filter mask using script listener. Is this possible? Is there some trick to it?
Cheers,
Philip

I can be wrong, but I remember somewhere on ps-script Xbytor writing about it.
ScriptingListener can't record brush strokes - afaik, according to Chris Cox, this would clog the log - but there's an "Allow tool recording" option in the Actions palette that should do the trick.
A workaround could be to record the brush into an Action, then parse the action with XTools and grab the raw data stream from the generated JS. Never attempted to try, but in principle should work.

  • Photoshop CC v 14.0 for Mac-Smart Filter Masking

I have a standalone Photoshop CS 6 v 13.05 and a Photoshop CC v 14.0 both running on the same MacPro using OS x 10.8.4.
The Smart Filter Masking by painting in the standalone version of Photoshop CS 6 works perfectly.
However, try as I might I just cannot get my smart filter/s masked by painting in them in the Photoshop CC version.
Is there a switch or setting somewhere that I’m missing? Checked everywhere I can think of.
    Any tips

  • Lightroom ignores smart filter masks

I just noticed the following problem after upgrading from LR4 to LR5:
    - Select RAW (.CR2) file in LR5
    - Edit in -> Open as Smart Object in Photoshop (CS6)
    - Apply smart filter
    - Use smart filter mask to apply filter to portion of image
    - Save
When viewed and exported as a .jpg in LR5, the filter effect is not masked, but applied to the entire image.  The .jpg saved directly from CS6 is correctly masked. As a workaround, the smart layer can be duplicated and rasterized.  Is this a defect introduced in LR5?
    Update 6/27/2013:
The problem also exists in LR4
It is not related to RAW, or Open as Smart Object from LR.  It can be reproduced by:
    - create a new image in Photoshop CS5 or CS6
    - convert to smart object
    - apply smart filter (something noticeable, like solarize)
    - add a smart filter mask for a portion of the image
    - save as a .psd
When imported into LR4 or LR5, the smart filter mask is ignored, and the filter is applied to the entire image.
Can anyone else reproduce this problem?  Is it a known limitation of LR?

I doubt it. When you operate on the layers level, all you have is pixel values of the individual layers without one layer knowing about the other. Filter chaining outside of what smart objects offer would require a much different approach to the whole matter and then we talk about a workflow similar to node-based compositing applications, where each processing operation is concatenated with the previous one in terms of how the code runs under the hood. Not something that will happen any time soon in PS, I think.

  • Why doesnt the smart filter mask move with the smart object?

OMG Why doesnt the smart filter mask move with the smart object?  Yikes Way PITA

If you look at the other tread about transform Again and smart Object layers you will find I found there seems to be two flavors of Transform and some bazar behaviors when it come to smart object layers. http://forums.adobe.com/message/4611500#4611500
However for this problem here I think I can not show you how to do it.
First target the smart filters Mask.  In fact so you can see what is happening Alt+Click on it so Photoshop displays the mask rather then the the composit image.  Then  use Ctrl+T free transform then just for a test hold down the Ctrl and the Alt keys and drag in a cornor to constrain and srink the Mask thee release the keys and press enter to commit the transform.
Next target the smart object layer then use the short cut Ctrl+Shift+T (Transform Again) on a PC the smart object layer will be transformed to match the filter mask transform.

  • Is it possible to use a vector filter mask for smart filters?

    Hello
I have a very specific question. With smart objects, you can use smart filters and you can use a smart filter mask to define the filter effect area. Now, the filter mask is like a regular layer mask, in that its effectively a raster image. I'm wondering if it's possible to use a vector filter mask as well? I haven't yet found an option to do so. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    I'm using Photoshop CS5.
    Thank you
    R. Kroll

I'm wondering if it's possible to use a vector filter mask as well?
Not to the best of my knowledge.
A possible workaround (depending on the SO) might be to duplicate it, apply the Filter and apply the Vector Mask to the SO itself.

  • Image showing through brush stroke

    Hi all,
I want to make a photograph show through some brush strokes I made but I forgot how.  Can someone remind me how?  I selected the brush strokes and made it a clipping mask but it didn't work....do I need to do something to the strokes first?
    Thanks!!

You could use the brush strokes as a layer mask...
Use the brush strokes to make a selection (e.g., Control-click the RGB channel).
Then select the image layer and do Layer - Layer Mask - Hide Selection (assuming the brush strokes are dark).
Adjust the layer mask to achieve the desired level of transparency.
Essentially with this method you're transferring the brush strokes data into a layer mask.  A variant might be to use the "brush strokes" layer mask on a layer above the image.
There are likely other ways to do it, such as using Multiply blend mode.  But I don't know the specifics (e.g., are you painting black brush strokes on white or what).

  • Brush strokes show in history but not reflected on mask

I have CS4 Extended, Dell Precision M0, WinXP 64bit and 20GB of Ram (overkill I know). This issue happens most often in the 32bit version of PS which I need to use for certain filters. It also happens in the 64bit version but takes longer to manifest itself.
When I apply a filter to a duplicate layer and then add a layer mask OR of I add an adjustment layer and try to fine tune the effect by painting on the mask, the brush strokes show up in history but they have no affect on the mask. It typically happens mostly on very large files such as those from my 5DMKII but also happens if I've added several layers and masks to smaller files.
As a workaround, I can make selections and fill the area on the mask with black and it works. This is time consuming as you can imagine.
The brush problem is only related to masks. I can create a new layer, for instance, and paint on it with black or any color.
I've also had this issue when trying to use the spot removal tool or when cloning. Again...very large files.
I've entered every imaginable query and haven't had any luck! I'm hoping someone here has a clue.
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply. I sure wish it were that simple but no....that is not the problem. I'm an advanced PS user and know the workings of a computer well. I've been through every imagineable possibility and now am wondering if my video card isn't up to the task of redrawing the brush strokes on huge files. I'm grasping at straws.
    Thanks anyway.

  • CC: Aren't Filter Gallery, Brush Strokes & Artistic suppose to be 16-bit now?

    Dear Forum:
I have used Photoshop since Version 2. I at long last downloaded a trial of CC (I currently use CS6) in the hopes that Filter Gallery, Artistic and Brush Strokes now support 16-bit processing. I even downloaded the instruction manual for CC, and it said it was supported. But alas, it is not working. Is this because I am on a trial vesion or did these features not get flushed out as promised? All versions of the above work in 8-bit mode.
    Pete

    Hi Curt!
Thanks for your reply. I have been waiting since Version 7 for Brush Strokes--Angled Strokes to be 16 bit---really need it. Any hope that it will happen SOON? My pimary reason for upgrading to CC.
I also noticed that Smart Blur is not up and running yet.
I like having Camera RAW as a filter--helpful.

  • Link Smart-Object Filter mask to transformation of Smart object

Often it would be very nice, if you could link the filtermask of a smart object to the smart object itself. So that when you transform the SM (rotate, scale etc) the filtermask of the smartfilter is transformed, too.

It would seem if a linked layer mask can be transformed with the smart object the filter mask could be linked as well.
I didn't mean the workaround to be vote against the request. But it does have an added benefit. When you transform a smart object with almost any smart filter the appearance of the filter changes. Blurs become more or less blurred depending on the transform. Same with sharpen. If you want the effect of the filter to appear the same after the transform you need to embed it into a new smart object.

  • Add vector mask to smart filter

You can apply a mask to smart filters, but I can't find a way to apply a vector mask to smart filters.
As a workaround I make a selection from a path and make a filter mask from that selection. That works just fine, but I'm still wondering if it's possible to apply the vector mask directly to the smart filter.

I don't believe you can add a vector mask directly to smart filters but you could add a vector mask from path to the layer.

  • How do i add filter to just brush strokes and paint fill not pencil.

Sorry it is kind of hard to explain in the description.
What i want to know is if i can pretty much just select the brush strokes and paint fill on a layer and have the pencil lines left alone.
I want to filter, then blur the brush strokes and paint fill on the layer but keep the pencil lines sharp, i have been doing paint fill and brush stroked on a different layer than the pencil lines but this takes ages because i have to draw the picture out twice everytime using the brush strokes to go along the pencil lines so i can fill them in with color, if i could blur them on same layer without effecting pencil lines then i could just fill the pencil lines with paint bucket instead of redarwing the lines with brush tool if this makes sence.
Here is a picture to show what im trying to achieve
The pencil lines are on a different layer to brush strokes

if you convert to a movieclip (right click>convert to symbol>movieclip) whatever you want to filter, you can filter it independent of other objects.

  • When will Brush Strokes be 16-bit compatible in PS CC?

It was announced, then confirmed in the current PS CC product manual that Brush Strokes would be made 16-bit compatible, and it is not. What time frame can we expect to see this functioning?
    Pete

    Ahhh... Brush strokes filter.
[EDIT]  Have you misread the section?  The head only refers to this list AFAICS
List of filters supporting 16-bit/channel and 32-bit/channel documents
The following filters support 16-bit/channel and 32-bit/channel documents:
All Blur filters (except for Lens Blur and Smart Blur)
    All Distort filters
The Noise > Add Noise filter
    All Pixelate filters
All Render filters (except for Lighting Effects)
All Sharpen filters (except for Sharpen Edges)
The following filters under Filter > Stylize:
    Diffuse
    Emboss

  • File damaged after using a smart filter

    Hello,
we got a serious problem with PS12.0.2 , OS 10.6.6 on Mac Pro 2,4GHz Quad Core 24GB RAM.
As you can see the File is corrupted after using a smart filter. The undo function has no success.
Is this a known problem? Maybe with memory or graphic card?
    thanks
    jens

I am afraid bad RAM may be a possilbility.
Does turning off openGL have any bearing on the issue?
    Other than that, boilerplate-text:
As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems you might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed) by pressing command-alt-shift on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html
Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)
If 3rd party plug-ins are installed try disabling them to verify if one of those may be responsible for the problem.

  • Ps CS6 Problem: Transform applied to Smart Object fails to transform an attached Smart Filters Mask

    Ps CS6
    OSX 10.6.8
Problem: Transform applied to Smart Object fails to transform an attached Smart Filters Mask.
I mean a Transform, including Free Transform, as found in the Edit menu.  A simple move by the Move Tool is OK.
A workaround until this bug is squashed is to encapsulate the Smart Object + Smart Filters + Filter Mask inside another Smart Object and transform that.
However, that will not be a satisfactory solution in some cases. If a filter has size parameter(s), e.g. Gaussian Blur radius, a scaling or warping/distorting transform applied after the filter will obviously differ from the filter applied after the transform.
In any case, the workaround is inconvenient to subsequent editing and experimenting with filters and masks.

    R_Kelly wrote:
I don't think that's a bug since the implementation seems to be purposely done.
It's been that way since photoshop cs3.
If its been like that since CS3 then I think it's a bug which remains because nobody (or not enough people) has complained before.

  • Sketch Filter not working in smart filter mode?

I have been trying to use the sketch filter using Deke McClellans technique on turning type to fire, My CS5 Photoshop seems to work perfectly through applying the ripple effects but when I try to apply the Sketch Filter it is not available along with Artistic / Brush Stroke / Texture. I have checked all my settings and cannot find out why.  Has this happened to anybody else?

Great Catch, I didn’t realize I was in the cymk mode ... I really appreciate the information, it is working perfectly now that I am in RBG.  I didn’t realize it wouldn’t work in this format .. I take it doesn’t work in the 16 bit mode either?  THANKS AGAIN, I was pulling my hair out, Dekes techniques are great and I wanted to complete the project for my wife's restaurant.
