Scripting with FCP and compressor

Hi folks,
I run a video transfer business, therefore, my projects are fairly streamlined in terms of the processes.
After beginning a FCP export to a .mov file so i can compress into a m2v and aiff with bitvice, can i write a script to automatically take the aiffs, launch compressor, choose my created preset ac3 setting and create the ac3s?
I ask b/c i maximize my time by transferring/editing/colour correcting during the day and i run my files overnight. Most times, the files are done b/n 5 AM and 7 AM, but then my lovely macs sit there, unused for a few hours. I would love to have them grab the necessary files and go to work?
I would never ask if this is possible on a peecee, but i wouldn't put it past a Mac
I'm on FCP 4.5, with G5 dually 2.0 and a g4 dual 1.25 MDD.
thanks in advance for answering either way,
Keebler
G4MDDdual1.25; G5 dual 2.0   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

i think you could do this quite easily, the basic steps would be:
in the Finder, create a Folder on the Desktop called "Converted Files" or something like that
in Compressor, choose your preset and set the Destination to your "Converted Files" folder ... then save this setup as a Droplet
now create a "Folder Action" applescript, to open any files contained in the folder with your Droplet, and attach the action to your "Converted Files" folder
then export your aiff's to this folder and the compressor action will run automagically
you might also want to check out Automator in your Aplications folder

  • Making FLVs with FCP and Compressor causing audio Clicks.

I have run into a very specific error that I can reproduce and would love some help solving or finding a decent workaround. Please note that I am converting 1000s of videos in "DV/DVPCRO NTSC/48Khz audio" into FLVs and the workflow I am using creates the FLVs in one pass rather than two. I much prefer this to creating a two step process where I would render our all the movies once and then re-batch them in a completely different program to create the FLVs.
    Hardware/Software
I am using FCP 5.1.2, Compressor 2.3.1, and Flash Video Exporter 2.1d494 (From Flash 8) all on an Imac Core2Duo 2.0, 4gig.
    Workflow:
All my original footage is in DV/DVPCRO NTSC/48Khz audio. From within FCP, I create a simple sequence that I export via Compressor. In Compressor, I export using Quicktime Components, and select FLV. In the FLV options I select 700kps for the the video and for audio its .mp3 (only choice) and 96 bit rate. (I have tested higher and lower bit-rates and I get the same problem).
    Problem:
When using the above workflow, the resulting FLV has loud audio "clicks" a few times a second... pops... like digital hits. Now if from FCP, I either export the sequence in its native DV/DVCPRO format and then use Quicktime to covert the file to FLV, or I export it directly from FCP using "Quicktime Conversion", there is NO clicking in the FLV file. I only get the clicking when Compressor is involved.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    Doug

    Hi,
9mbs is too high if the discs will be duplicated (as opposed to replicated). 7 would be better. Be sure to compress the audio as Dolby Digital.
Do your color correction in FCP before compression.
    Best Wishes,
    Mitch

  • Is there a deus ex maquina for the hashed over HDV- DV conversion issues in the temples of FCP and Compressor??

I want to create a good quality SD DVD  from 1080i/60 footage (20 minutes duration) from a Sony ZiU camera (mini DV tape) using FCP and Compressor. I can't do it. My hair has fallen out, but I don't want to throw in the towel.
I have imported the same footage with different FCP presets. The video quality in FCP is excellent.
But once I send the footage to Compressor. I end up with video exhibiting gradations of the following: blurry, jagged edges, jerky movement, darker color. Poor quality especially if a subject (kids playing football) runs fast.
The QT conversion process in Ken Stone’s article (May, 2008/updated in Jan, 2011) provides the most helpful information in getting a quality SD DVD. (Quality means looking as good as SD video DVDs).  Except for the fact that the DVD is widescreen, the better quality alternative may just be to stick with the old 4:3 shooting, editing, burning methods that I’ve used for years. Unless of course, I  am missing something. Hence my appeal to the knowledgable.
FYI Equipment/software: MAC Pro (OS 10.6.8); ATI Radeon HD 4870; terabytes to spare on 2 internal hard drives; FCS - FCP 7.0.3, Compressor 3.5.3, DVDSP 4.2.2. All applications are on Drive 1. FCP project files, scratch and other setups are on drive 2.
My current settings in FCP appear below. What's wrong here? Better alternative? Or it just may be HDV should not go to a SD DVD.
CAPTURE PRESET:  HDV - APPLE PRORES 422
DEVICE CONTROL PRESET:  Sony HDV FireWire
VIDEO PROCESSING Render 10-bit material in high precion YUV
I now send the Sequence to Compressor  I've tried various settings, and the split screen preview in Compressor reveals on the right side the jaggy, blurred, darker video. Same shows up after submitting; and of course if I try to burn a DVD in DVDSP.  I've followed Stone's Aug 31, 2009 article on Compressor 3.5. I experiemented with changes here and there without success (like changing field dominance of even selecting DV NTSC, etc).
If you got this far, thank you. And I really could use the help.

    Michael,
Thanks for the helpful comments. Two tactics today helped. Where ever field dominance was indicated I made sure "upper/top" was the same everywhere throughout  FCP and Compressor. That almost eliminated the jagged edges. Also, in the easy setup, I selected Apple ProRes 422 as the format, using HDV to ProRes HQ - Sony -1080i60. Sending direct to Compressor rather than through QuickTime conversion also help produce a clearer, less dark picture.
I'll try your suggesstions especially adding compression markers. I'll check back with you on results.
    Thanks

  • Two Radeons 3870 with FCP and Motion?

    Hi!
Have you tried to use two 3870 with FCP and Motion?
I just wanted to have all 512MB of video RAM for my canvas and use the second card with my Matrox MXO to display broadcast preview.
I know it could be risky, but as I remember earlier the problems shows only while rendering some of the plugins in FCP (my test was on 2006).
Do you have any experience with pair of 3870 cards?
I've just ordered two of them:)
    regards

From what I've read on this forum, FCP doesn't work properly with two video cards.

  • Error MessageDuring Creation of Blu-ray Disc in FCP and Compressor 3.5

Yesterday I spent more than 7 hours trying to create and burn a Blu-ray disc (actually an AVCHD disc on DVD-5 media) in both FCP 7 and Compressor 3.5. In every case, disc creation would go to completion of the encoding of the video and audio files, but when I was asked to insert a disk, I would do so and the disc would spin for about 30 seconds and then I would get the following error message: "There was an error burning your disc. The bit rate exceeded the maximum allowable." This message cannot be a correct description of the problem because I used the Blu-ray template that Apple provides in FCP 7 and Compressor 3.5 to create my disc. This template limits the bit rate to a maximum of 15 mbs and my video was only 15 minutes in length.
Additional information as follows: I am using an Early 2008 Mac Pro 8-core. I have Final Cut Studio 3 installed with all of the latest updates. I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.4 (latest updates all installed),and I have experienced no other problems with FCP 7 or Compressor 3.5. My Mac Pro's internal superdrive is functioning fine, and in fact, I eventually took my FCP7 project and rendered it to a QT reference movie and used that in Adobe's Encore CS5 to burn and AVCHD disc using the same internal DVD burner on my Mac Pro and it worked perfectly.
I am seeking any suggestions for how to address the problem (whatever it is) that gives this error message. Would you recommend a reinstall of the applications in Final Cut Studio 3? Other suggestions? Has anyone seen this error message when trying to burn Blu-ray or AVCHD discs from FCP 7 or Compressor 3.5?
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Tom

    Guys,
I am deeply appreciative of all of the suggestions and help received on this issue. I apologize for not responding sooner, but i have been looking at the problem described in this thread from numerous perspectives.
Jeremy, you may well have hit upon the solution, and I am trying your suggestion now. I did not realize that when you selected the Blu-ray template and directed it to a DVD burner that would make an AVCHD that you could alter the bit rate settings. I looked at the default bit rate that Apple sets when you select this template and I found that it allowed a maximum of slightly over 17 MBs and an average of 15 MBs. That is too high for an AVCHD disk, and thus the error message that I am getting may well be correct and not in error as I previously thought.
I have found that I prepared Blu-ray AVCHD disk as recently as late April with no problems so I don't know why I have not run into this problem of too high a bit rate before, but I had not. It may be that I used a Custom Present that I prepared and set my own bit rate for those disks.
In any case, I am trying a run now where I have set the bit rate to a maximum of 15 and an average of 13. We shall see if that still produces the error message. I shall post my results when I know them.
Again, thanks to all of you for your fine help.

  • HELP NO Chapters from FCP and Compressor-Did the FCP markers correctly too.

    Hi Everyone,
Having allot of good Beans with FCP.
    One problem though:
    1. Export to DVDSP4 with CHAPTER markers on my timeline and when I try to import my m2v file from Compressor its greyed out for some reason so, I drag it into DVDSP4 from finder and highlight my play button on the 1st template
MENU: SET ASSET AND CREATE CHAPTER INDEX.
It usually works great while it continues on but, I dont see my chapters anywhere.
I know they are there but, someone on online here said that you dont see the chapters while in compressor (which I wish showed them in the preview windo to confirm they are there) but, have yet to see them who up in DVDSP4.
I still think this is a FCP inquiry but, trying to forums.

Has some info on Chapter Markers to help.
Are you exporting the markers when you export from FCP? Are you adding them and making sure that they are on the timeline (not the track) in FCP? (If you open the movie in QT you should see the markers on the lower left in a crop down selector if they exported properly.)

  • Problems with Qmaster and compressor

I have tried all the digitallrebellions downloads and instructions to fix compressor and Qmaster.
    Now I get...
    Qmaster - is not running
    Compressor not properly installed
I have not tried the pacifist download. I'm to gun shy and frustrated at this point.
So my questions are, if I bite the bullet and purchase compressor 4 will this fix my problems?
Im still using FC Studio Pro 6.0.6
Will compressor 4 even work with FCP 6.06?
I really just want a way to encode my videos so that I can make cool HD DVDs with chapters and the ablity to make them loop for trade shows.
Having compressor back would be nice!

    Thanks for the quick reply,
I actually stumbled upon a simple fix for now.
I spent days of frustration and trying all sorts of solution, including installing Digital Rebellion's downloads and tried following their instructions. No luck.
Then I accidently I noticed that on one of my external drives that I had been previously running Macs back-up program “TimeMachine”. So I went back in time and grabbed the two applications before they stopped working and put them back on the start up discs in the applications folder and whala the programs work again. Go figure!

  • How to make a render farm with FCP X / Compressor??

Wondering how to setup a min render farm with FCP X on three machines. Played around with setting in Compressor but never see any machine available when I go to render on each machine?

Ok, so I'm using the wrong terminology.
I want to have all my machines transcode for me, is this possible, yes or no and how do I set it up. I've buggered around with all the settings in the link above but I'd get anything to show up?
Also I believe that compressor needs to copy the entire file to be rendered over the network for the other machine to work on it - is this correct ? I'm on wifi guess I could connect machines together via ethernet.
I'm looking at 4x time to do a simple render on prores proxy material and when I have to do it on a 2 hour wedding video I'll be looking for the nearest bridge to jump off!

  • Help with FCPX and Compressor updates

So compressor automatically updated from 4.0 to 4.1 and is now not working and im also having issues with the 10.0 to 10.1 FCPX update. Please check out the link to my other post below for more details.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24968191#2496819.

OK found projects, didnt realize they got moved to the events library from down by the timeline. Still waiting to see if Compressor 4.1 works with FCPX 10.1 update. Looks promising though. My computer automatically updated Compressor to 4.1 without me knowing (obviously when I opened it I noticed) but when it was failing I was still trying to compress with FCP 10.0 and Compressor 4.1 so maybe that was the issue.

  • NTSC/PAL, FCP and Compressor problems

I need help. I use a Sony camera (HDR CX560) bought in US with NTSC as standard. I live in Europe and would like to burn a DVD for my Blue-Ray player showing it on my PAL TV.
    The footage is 1080i, 1920x1080, 29,97 fps.
I have tried several different ways of achieving good results, but with no luck:
    1. Editing in Final Cut Pro with original specs (1080i, 29,97). The result showing in FCP viewer is not perfect, but quite good. A little bit of stuttering and a bit blury pictures. I have tried "Send to Compressor...", selected MPEG-2 for DVD in Compressor (customized to 16:9 TV format). The process stops after a minute - a file is being created, but only the first 30 seconds of the movie is visible. I also tried Share>Export file using Compressor settings. The file created does not have acceptable quality, mostly bescause of very disturbing stripes. I also tried Share>Master file but the output is not good enough (using codec Apple ProRes422 (HQ) - same stripes.
    2. Editing in Final Cut Pro with european standard (1080i, 25i). The result in FCP viewer is good with one exception - a lot of stuttering images while panning. I tried all the output/share alternatives mentioned above, with poor result.
    I use OS X 10.8.3, Final Cut Pro X 10.0.8 and Compressor 4.0.7
    Can anyone help?

    Double post.

  • Creating BITC DVD with FCP and DVD Studio Pro

    Ok so here's my question:
I've created a sequence with BITC, and now I want to export it to DVD studio pro so I can burn it to a dvd. I've been exporting as a quicktime movie, at DV PAL Anamorphic res. When I bring it into DVD Studio as an asset, it has to re-encode.
Can I drop one of these steps - ie. how do I export from FCP so that the resulting file does not need to be re-encoded in DVD studio.
I'm sure this is really very simple, but it's going to help me a lot - I have several (10-15) hours of footage to do this with. Thanks in advance...

export the file as a QT not self-contained use current settings
luanch Compressor, drag and drop the QT file on to the window then encode to get
M2V video and AC3 sound file
    import those into DVDSP

  • Exporting different FPS of one clip FCP and compressor dropping frames HELP

Hi all I'm posting this because I have no Idea what I'm doing wrong I'm trying to export my HD file from FCP as a quicktime H264 in 30fps and 24p of the same file. My client needs it in quicktime format but when I export in both FCP using quicktime conversion and compressor the fps playback is 12fps...8fps?. I've exported before not as quicktime with no problem. NTSC 29.97 version and PAL 25p of the same file in quicktime exported with no problem but the HD 1080 at 30fps and 24p wont work. Any advise or suggestions would be great....

Oh sorry, I've digitized my file from HD mini DV cam with FCP. I captured as HDV 30fps from the camera to FCP. I had no problems exporting with Apple HDV codec into different size and frame rates but trying to do the quicktime H264 at 30fps and 24p 1920x1080 is not working frames are dropping I do the same settings in compressor and still doesn't work.

  • Exporting Time FCP and Compressor

    I have a PowerPc G5, Leopard and FCP 6.
My footage is Apple ProRes 422. This is the first time I'm using this HD footage. (my first movie and all the videos I've made in the past were miniDV)
When I exported through the Export Quick Time Movie the hour long edit took about 10 - 15 minutes. The info for the footage is -
    1920 x 1080
HDV 1080p24 integar (Big Edian) Timecode
    1:01:57 Time
The problem is it's 11.48 GB and DVD Studio Pro will not compress it so I can make a DVD. (my first miniDVD movie's export was 18gigs and iDVD compressed it to a single DVD) I nolonger have iDVD and I have to use DVD Studio Pro.
I put this movie into Compressor and tried compresssing it. When it finally starts compressing, it says it will take at least 47 hours. Which seem outragous for an hour long movie. The first two times it failed after 6 hours.
Then I went into FCP and tried exporting half the movie (30 minutes) with H264, Quality High, Size 680x382 (current). In 12 hours it was 25% with another 27 hours to go.
    Is this normal?
How long should it take to export an hour of HighRes 422 clips?
Is there a setting that I can export fairly quick so I can watch this on my PC and burn a DVD so I can see what it looks like on my TV? It has to be very good, but not the best quality.
This is the first half of a movie that will eventually be close to 2 hours. I can't imagine how long the completed project is going to be.
    Thank You!

It actually just said Fail. No reason, no nothing. What might have happened is I've been trying for over 2 days to get this working right, and nothing worked. Last night I exported the sound to AIFF and burned a CD of it, and there's nothing there.
After that, I shut down the computer for a little while, and went back to work. It might have been a glitch that formed from one of the export attempts.
I'm doing this just to watch it on other TVs and computers.
So I went into Export Using QT Conversion
    Chose OPTIONS
Changed Settings to Medium Quality, One Pass
    Changed Size to NTSC 720 x 480 16:9
I have a movie that about 1gig and looks pretty good. It didn't even take 3 hours.
Now I just have to see what it looks like on other machines.
In Compressor I used the Best Quality for 90 minute DVD and it just sat there for hours not registering anything. I might try again if the DVD I burn of this 264 looks like absolute garbage on my TV. But, for what I'm using it for, it doesn't have to be perfect yet. That comes after I edit the second half.
    Thanks for the help!

  • How to get lg BE14NU40 blue ray burner to work with fcp or compressor

how to get LG BE14NU40 Blue Ray Burner to work with FCP X or Compressor??

    Hello Ron,
First up, you don't have to use Compressor to burn a Bluray Disc.
FCP X can do this with it's own built-in software. Compressor of course can do the job.
In my experience some burners work and some don't.
I use an the older version of this burner:

    It works fine with Mac.

  • Problems with FCP and Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT video card

Not sure if this should be in the MacBook Pro forum or this one...
I am having trouble with the GeForce 8600M GT video card while editing in final cut pro (and after effects). I have talked with numerous people at applecare, but they say that they are unaware of issues regarding the video card.
The problem: It's almost like the card is unable to keep up with professional video applications. Whenever there is movement in the video I'm editing, I get lines across the screen. Not sure to how better to explain it than to say it looks like the video card is having a tough time refreshing. (I can take the same video to a much older power book, and it plays perfectly, so its not the source file.)
At first I thought it was an FCP issue, but I just started using after effects, and I'm having the same problem in there. If I edit in after effects, when I play it back (in after effects), I get the lines. I can then export the project to a quicktime file. The quicktime file plays perfectly (no lines) when not involved with a professional application. Then if I import the same quicktime file into FCP and play it back in FCP, the lines happen again.
Is anyone esle having this problem? Any thoughts? Any solutions?
    Thanks!

I had searched the macbook pro forum, but not this one. It seems that the "screen tearing" issue has been talked about a lot, so I apologize for the repetitive nature of the post. I will say that I am fairly shocked that given how many people have clearly called applecare, no one there seems to have a clue that there is a problem with this video card. I have talked with at least 4 different people in the FCP specialty group, and not one had any clue what I was talking about... 3 of the 4 were fairly insistent that it was a video source issue on my side.
