Scroll ball not scrolling up

Just yesterday my scroll ball stopped scrolling up. I can still scroll down and horizontal. Does anyone have a suggestions or advice as to how to fix my problem?

You'll have better luck getting suggestions if you ask in the iMac area. This forum is for older, pre-G3 Apple hardware and so not the best place to get a quick and accurate response. You may want to try searching the iMac area for something like "mighty mouse scroll ball"; you might find suggestions already posted.
Regards.

  • Apple Mouse Scroll Ball Not Working Since 10.7.4 Supplemental Update

I don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but my scroll ball on my Apple Mouse (wired) will no longer scroll upwards since applying the OS 10.7.4 Supplemental Update on the 1st June 2012.
I have a Mac Mini with a 27" Thunderbolt Display running 10.7.4. There are no software updates available and I have tried all the settings available in the system preferences.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

FWIW, my mighty mouse works w/o issues. See these:

  • Mouse scroll ball not working

How can you clean the mouse scroll ball to make it scroll again?

    Hello:
Turn the mouse upside down and run it (vigorously) over a piece of paper.  Better yet, run it upside down over a micro-fiber cloth.

  • Wireless Mighty Mouse Scroll Ball does not scroll downward

    Hello,
I have a mighty mouse I use with my iMac and I cannot seem to get it to scroll down (any window) lately. The scroll ball does scroll up, but not down. I did reset the mouse, but is it time for a cleaning? I have used it for about 7-8 months. Thanks for the replies.

Great adivce. My MM is 2 years old and just stared suffering the tortures of the damned. Tried it with water and dry with no joy. Tossed some rubbing alcohol on a bath towel. Did the trick despite lint. Work good for now.

  • Mighty Mouse will not scroll up!

I didn't know where to post this but since this is the most popular place for the mighty mouse, I decided to post here.
Does anyone have any ideas how to get the little scroll ball to scroll up?
    It stopped working last night.
It will scroll down but not up.
    Any suggestions!!!!
    Thanks,
    Sam

Mine has stopped scrolling down - - again.
I first thought it was a mechanical thing - dirt or something in the mechanism.
Once, though, a reboot got it working.
Now it only scrolls up, not down.
Even when it was working, the scroll up was smooth, but the scroll down was jerky and uneven.
If it continues, I will return it for a replacement.
This seems to be one Apple's flops.

  • My mouse scroll ball will not scroll down.

My mouse scroll ball will not scroll down.

Unfortunately the Mighty Mouse is known to have issues when scrolling if it gets dirty. The best you can do is hold it upside down and roll the ball back and forth in every direction for a minute or so, this should help clean it any it may start working again. My school's multimedia lab has 20 workstations that all have that mouse and about half of them work! I'd recommend moving to the magic mouse or another brand's mouse if cleaning does not fix it.

  • Mighty Mouse: Scroll ball does not scroll down

My scroll wheel on my 'might mouse' now only scrolls UP and Side to Side. I have tried restarting, checking system prefs. etc. but no joy. How did we manage before?!! If any one has the answer I would be grateful. Thanks Rob

    Finally an answer that works!
I had a mouse that would not scroll up. Down or side to side worked fine.
I tried cleaning the wheel with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol, as this had worked several times before. But it had no effect today. I tried the "lint free soft cloth lightly moistened" trick too, but this did not help, either, even after watching the demonstration video and turning the mouse upside down. But unplugging the mouse, and applying some pressure while rolling the ball upside down on a piece of clean paper is what did the trick! Thank you for saving me from this incredible annoyance!

  • I can no longer scroll downward using the scroll ball.

For no reason I can identify, all of a sudden I have lost the capability to scroll in a downward direction when using the Scroll Ball (or whatever the thing is called). I can still scroll upward. I have set Systems Preferences >Keyboard and Mouse >Mouse Preferences >Scrolling Options to Vertical Only. The Scroll Ball is set to Off. I have restarted the computer after changing the preferences to no avail.
The same thing happens no matter what option I select in the Scrolling Options window, e.g., Vertical and Horizontal, Vertical Only, 360 Degree, etc. I can scroll upward only, not downward.
I can scroll both upward and downward using the Up and Down arrows on the keyboard, but only upward using the Scroll Ball. I can scroll in both directions when I put the cursor on the sliding bar at the side of the window, and when I click on the up or down arrows in the side bar.
How do I set up to restore the capability to scroll both upward and downward using the Scroll Ball?

  • Mighty Mouse will not scroll horizontally uder 10.3.9 why???

    Hi all
I was trying out my Mighty Mouse under 10.3.9 and it's not scrolling horizontally and on Apple support sight it said that it should scroll horizontally and vertically but it just doesn't scroll horizontally why is this? I have tried it on 10.4.10 and no problem here so I know that the scroll ball works and not broken. Is it a software/hardware "glitch" under 10.3.9 or a typo in part of Apple and if not how can I make it scroll horizontally under 10.3.9????
    Thanks!!!!!
PS: Here's what Apple says in they're "Support" section:
+*If you use Mighty Mouse on a computer with Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier, the mouse offers the following functionality:*+
+*Primary and secondary button functions are assigned to left and right buttons respectively*+
+*Vertical and horizontal scrolling is enabled (scrolling can't be disabled)*+
+*Can activate Exposé from the Exposé pane in System Preferences*+

I believe the booklet that came with the mouse explains what features work with each version of Mac OS X (I can't remember the page - I don't have the booklet to hand at the moment); I would expect the scroll ball to work with 10.3.9...

  • Mighty Mouse, Scroll Ball Still Malfunctioning?

    Hi,
I love my Intel iMac and I LOVE my mighty mouse...but the scroll ball is constantly quitting on me.
I clean it just like the apple video, I blow into it, I clean and clean and clean it and then it works for a day or two and then again, it stops.
I'm the most meticulous clean person when it comes to hardware, I even manage Mac labs at a big university - so I have lots of experience with these mighty mouse. They are ALL having the same problem.
Is this karma? Does anyone else have this problem? I'm not sure what to do (both with mine and the one's at work!).
Any suggestions would be apreciated. Thanks!

I am also pretty clean with my Mac. I found that cleaning as recommended by Apple was sufficient, until about two weeks ago, nothing I did to clean it, short of the misadvice to stick a needle into the ball socket, was successful. I found a website that shows how to disassemble the mouse carefully with an Exacto knife and did so. I was amazed at how dirty the rollerbars, especially the one to scroll down, were, in spite of my faithful cleaning routine. When I reassembled the MM I just used a couple strategic drops of super glue to secure the one ring that is glued in place. It will be much easier to disassemble the next time!

  • Mighty Mouse scroll ball problem

I have had this Mighty Mouse for about a year and a half and the only problem has been the scroll ball. Every once in a while it won't scroll down. I was told to hold it upside down and rub the ball good with a wool cloth. Basically every time it did the trick. Now it won't scroll down anymore (it scrolls everywhere else though). Is there something broken inside? Is there anyway to take it apart? Not being able to scroll down is quite annoying and I'd love to be able to do it again.
Scrolling down, the ball moves but doesn't make the little clicking like sound like it does in any other direction. Any advice?

Hi. Sometimes using a clear spirit such as denatured alcohol (or vodka...) instead of the water suggested here
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302417
helps - but I've had one that wouldn't be fixed, and was replaced. Good Luck.

  • MIghty Mouse Scroll Ball

Not really a MacBook Pro question, but it's the laptop I have so I wasn't sure where else to put it.
The scroll ball on my mighty mouse has been acting up lately. Yesterday it wouldn't scroll down, but it would go up. I noticed when I pressed down really hard I could almost feel dirt or something. So I pressed down, moved it around in all directions, seemed to take care of it.
Today it scrolls down but not up. Same trick didn't fix it. I suspect it just needs a good cleaning, but not really sure how to go about doing that. Any suggestions?

  • Mighty mouse scroll ball behavior

Less than a week ago, I bought a Wireless Mighty Mouse. I thought that it was having trouble scrolling right, so I took it back for a replacement. This one seems to have the same problem.
The problem seems to be that the mouse has a hard time scrolling right. To scroll up, down, or left, I only need to put the slightest pressure on the scroll ball. To scroll right, I need to press the ball about halfway down. It's not that it's a problem per se, but the user experience is just off enough to be frustrating. As a small note, the mouse makes different noises when scrolling up, down, and left, versus scrolling right. For scrolling UDL, it makes a small clicking noise. Scrolling right makes a sliding noise. When I push the ball in further and scroll right, I get the clicking noise.
As I said, I've gone through 2 mice in less than a week. I thought the first might have been a fluke. Not that I've run into two with the same "problem", (and from two different stores), I wonder what's going on. It seems like it could either be a manufacturing defect that affected a whole batch, or perhaps this is the expected behavior. I can't imagine that my fingers are so oily that they would have gummed up the ball instantly. And yes, I have tried just about every cleaning method.
So the questions are: how does your scroll ball work? How much pressure do you need? And has anybody had problems only with scrolling right?

bytecrafter - I did some searching and found out a few tips that solved the problem for me.
First, I blew compressed air into the scroll ball. I pushed down on it with my fingernail so that the air could get into the crack.
Then I used a damp, lint-free cloth to rigorously clean the scroll ball, while the mouse was upside down. Apple has a video (and instructions) of this here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302417
    Hope that helps.

  • Mouse scroll wheel not working correctly.

Just installed Firefox 4 and my mouse scroll wheel is not working correctly. When opening the program, I can scroll as normal for about 5/10 minutes. Then, suddenly, the mouse scroll wheel no longer works. I've since found that it is actually scrolling outside of Firefox. E.g. I had Outlook open and it was scrolling through my Outlook even though Firefox was the open window. I checked this multiple times and it always seems to be the case.
Checked about:config as advised, everything looks correct on the mousewheel settings (i.e everything is set to default). Mouse drivers are up to date. No problems with any other programs. This issue started occurring in Firefox 4 beta. I switched back to 3.6 so I could continue scrolling. Updating to Firefox 4 caused the issue to recur.

It seems a lot of people are having problems with the Mighty Mouse's scroll ball. I actually thought I was done for after just a few weeks of using my first (wired) one. But here I am years later with my wireless variant, beeing perfectly happy with it (in case you don't know, the wireless Mighty Mouse is a much better option due to it's laser based tracking system). In my experience, getting rid of fluff that interferes with the ball is quite easy on both types. Try blowing really hard directly at the trackball (optionally while you press it down with some pointed device) a few times. Rotate it and repeat as needed. Alternatively roll the mouse upside down on the microfiber cloth that probably came with your Mac.

  • Mouse scroll ball

Scroll ball works only in one direction. I only move screen up by rolling the ball upward. It does not response when I scroll down.
I think something inside the mouse, roller or sensor or anything, though the movement of the ball is just fine.
Is there any way to disassemble the mouse so that I can take a look at the inside?
    Thanks in advance.

The scroll ball is surrounded by tiny magnetic rollers that collect dust and oil from your skin. Honestly, the only way I got to be "like new" was to actually remove the bottom ring and take the thing apart. All you need are small fingers, a small philips screw driver, a tube of superglue, and a tiny bit of elbow grease. Just some good old fashion reverse engineering. But if you have Apple Care, try that first. They may give you a break and save you a 1/2 hour. Unfortunately, if you do remove the ring, it does not just snap back in. You will have to superglue it back on but not too much is needed.
