Scroll Direction: Natural Problem

On my macbook pro 13-inch mid 2010 I install Lion and from the beginning doesn't work the natural scroll with two fingers.I check system preferences in the box scroll direction natural. All others gestures works perfectly, only scroll direction doesn't. I did the last combo update (10.7.3) but nothing change. Somebody any idea?

I assume this feature works on your iMac.  If all the other gestures on you MBP are functioning correctly and you have attempted both scroll options, this is indeed a puzzle.  The only option I can suggest is to take it to a Genius bar at an Apple store and have them take a look.
Ciao.

  • Scroll direction natural

When using Safari, I prefer to use a two finger swipe upwards to scroll towards the top of the page and a two finger swipe downwards to scroll to the bottom of the page.  For that reason, I unticked "Scroll Direction: Natural" in the settings and all was well again.
However, now when I want to go "forward" a page, I have to do a two finger swipe from right to left, and if I want to go "back" a page, I have to do a two finger swipe from left to right.  This is somewhat counter-intuitive.
Is there a way to keep my preferences for scrolling up and down without making the scrolling forwards and backwards counter-intuitive?

  • System Settings will not save my desired mouse scroll direction

I understand the Apple genius of wanting the Settings: Mouse: Scroll direction: Natural box to be checked.  But **** it, this is MY iMac and I want the scroll direction to remain Unchecked, so the screen scrolls in the direction I’ve been used to for YEARS.
The problem is the System Settings will not save the unchecked scroll box.  I have to return to the System Settings every time I log on to UN check the Scroll Direction: Natural box.
Will Apple ever fix this so that I, and others, can operate the scrolling as THEIR LONG-TIME USER sees fit?

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

  • Can I change the scroll direction of the trackpad without changing the scroll direction of the mouse scroll wheel?

I don't know if anyone else came across this problem, but I noticed that changing the scroll direction on the trackpad also changes the scroll direction on the mouse. I enjoy the natural movement on the trackpad, but the normal 'windows-style' movement on the mouse. Any solution?

I too have same issue. By default trackpad has natural scroll direction. However for mouse natural scroll direction causes problem, if you used to use wheel on the mouse on Windows and Linux platform. If I change the mouse's wheel direction to non-natural direction. It fixes the issue. However it changes the trackpad's direction also to be non-natural, which is not good.
Both the settings can be independent of each other. (i.e. mouse's scroll direction and trackpad's scroll direction).

  • Scroll Direction setting not sticking

I have a iMac running Mountain Lion. I prefer not using the "Scroll direction: natural" so I removed the check within the Mouse System Preferences. I exit out of System Preferences, open any browser (Safari, Firefox or Chrome) and the check in "Scroll direction: natural" reappears. I have tried removing the check and rebooting but unfortunately the check in "Scroll direction: natural" reappears each time.
Any ideas how to fix this
    Thanks

    Nancy,

  • IPhoto scrolling direction opposite to prefs

iPhoto scrolling direction is opposite to what I have set in system preferences.  I set scroll direction to natural, iPhoto scrolls down when I scroll up.  I uncheck natural, iPhoto scrolls up when I scroll up. I haven't noticed this in any other program. I'm using an Apple trackpad.  I have a new iMac that came with Lion and iPhoto pre-installed and have applied all the updates.
    I submitted a bug report.
    Anyone else with this problem?

I know. I am trying, Really. Came to my new rMBP from Snow Leopard. . . .  I am trying to get used to it in Safari, but scrolling directions in Final Cut, Photoshop . . .oh man...nope. Its not going to work....
There is an app called Better Touch Tool, but I am just not getting it ;-(

  • Scroll direction not working in either direction

I'm running Mountain Lion. The scroll direction works under account A, but if I switch users B, it stops working all together under B account.
I've been to System Prefs and see nothing unusual. It's system wide, can't scroll in the finder or in applications. I'm completely baffled!

Just to understand the sequence: you have this problem when you are in a Firefox tab, click a link, and it opens in a:
    * new window
    * new tab
    * same tab
I'm guessing a new window. Since the title bar area is a bit faded, some other window must have the focus, but which one?? If you press and hold the Alt key and press and release the Tab key, you should get the visual Task Switcher pane. The icon to the left of the current highlighted icon indicates the window that had the focus. If you then click that first icon, is it another Firefox window, or some other app?

  • OS upgrade on macbook pro changed two-finger scrolling direction

I just upgraded my macbook pro to Mountain Lion and the scrolling direction on the track pad has changed.  Now when I drag my fingers down to scroll down on a page, it goes up, not down anymore.  And if I drag up, the page goes down.  How do I fix it?  I'm used to the other way!!

That's Apple's idioc "natural scrolling" which isn't natural at all.
Hopefully with Scott Forstall hitting the highyway, our good friend Jony Ive will fix everything that's wrong with OS X Lions.

  • Two different scroll directions?

Would it be possible to set two different Scroll Directions for two different gestures.  I would like to have "natural" scrolling for the swipe between full-screen apps and inverse for the scroll bar.  Although I could get used to it I might aswell try to find a way around it altogether.  Thanks

If I were doing this (and I have before), I would abandon the scrollbar that's built-in and use some other separate control to perform the scrolling.
You can react to a VALUE CHANGE event on this other control, and set INDEX #1 of the 2-D array, and INDEX #0 of the 1-D array to the same value at the same time, and it looks much smoother.
You can keep the VERTICAL scrollbar on the 2-D array if you like, but when the HORIZONTAL scroll thing changes, read the 2-D array's INDEX #0, and set it back unchanged when you change index #1.
This results in a smoother display, because they both change at the same instant.  You can set the range, and enable/disable the "scrollbar" as appropriate.

  • Changing the scrolling direction for my mouse will change the scrolling direction for my trackpad

I really like the new feature "natural scrolling" with the trackpad, but when I use my mouse, the scrolling direction is reversed as well. So I tried to change the settings of my usb mouse (razer diamondback) from "natural" back to the old scrolling. Unfortunately it also changed my trackpad settings back to normal.
Is there a possibility to use my mouse scrolling the "old style" while using the "natural scrolling" with my trackpad ?

I've said a very similar thing in this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3290807?start=15&tstart=0
The thing is that someone from Nova Scotia posted a link in that thread to "Scrollreverser", and it looks like that tool can actually de-couple mouse and trackpad scrolling.
I've sent the proprietor of the app an e-mail asking if it will also work in Lion... If the answer is yes, this might do you fine...

  • Any way through terminal setting or 3rd party app to tweak scroll direction?

I am really struggling with the settings that the OS X Lion GUI allows you for trackpad scroll direction.  Natural just seems horribly wrong for veritcal scrolling like in a webpage, but exactly right for horizontal scrolling, like swiping between desktops.  If I turn off natural scrolling, I ALWAYS accidentally swipe left toward the dashboard screen when I mean to swipe right to where I keep iTunes.  It is very frustrating.  And while I might be willing to retrain myself to vertical scroll the natural way, I could never ever ever retrain myself to mouse-wheel the opposite direction, and natural scrolling changes both the trackpad and mouse behavior--you cannot configure them separately.
Are there any other options to tweak this beyond what the GUI provides?  This is really frustrating.

I hear you.  I agree too.
At first I thought it was my iMac that was unstable or buggy after Lion's upgrade.  Was fiddling with the scroll settings for both my Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse for almost few nights... trying to understand it all, and (finally) realized it is just one generic setting!  It's like in the house you have two wall switches to the same light, and if both are at off positions, depending which one you use last, eg you turn on the 1st switch, and if you are at the 2nd one, it is at off, you need to on it first then off it, the the light will go off - crude example, but something like that.
Ya, I already put it in Lion's feedback on Apple.com, I think a lot more should do the same, so that the next update, there may be seperate settings for these.
    Cheers

  • Mac OS X Lion seems to have reversed my default scrolling direction.

Just installed Lion, so far so good, except that scrolling has reversed directions - that is to say twin-finger scrolling in an upwards direction causes a downward scroll on the page and vice versa; twin-finger scrolling in an leftward direction causes a right-direction scroll on the page and vice versa. Lion has essentially 'reversed' my default scrolling rules.
Sys Pref does not seem to be able to change it back. Can anyone help?

    Hello:
The answer you got from the previous poster is correct.  With OS X 10.7, Apple reversed the scroll direction.
I have been told (and it makes sense) this was done to make a Mac behave in the same way as an iPhone and iPad.  From here, that seems to be true.  I did find that one gets used to the reversed direction quite rapidly - especially if you have an iPad
