Scroll indicator sometimes disappears in Safari iOS 8.3 bug. (On scrollable divs using "-webkit-overflow-scrolling:touch")

Hi,
After updating to iOS 8.3 on an iPad Air, it seems something is wrong with the scroll indicator on scrollable divs in Safari.
It scrolls like it should be, but randomly I just don't get to see the scroll indicator on the right side of the scrollable div.
You can see the problem when refreshing the page, sometimes the scroll indicator is visible and sometimes it is not.
Here is a small example, to view on an iPad/Safari: http://www.roidesrois.be/new_site/div_scroll.html
The code used should be correct. Before the update I never saw this problem before.
Here is an example from somebody else. http://www.quirksmode.org/css/css2/overflowscrolling.html
I see the exact same problem there too.
When using Chrome or Mercury on an iPad I don't see this problem, only in Safari.
Can someone please confirm this problem or maybe has a solution for this?
Is this a bug in Safari that needs to be solved?
Thnx in advance,
Kind regards.
Lester.

Hello to both of you.
Don't know if this will clarify or mudle the issue but in the same platform context I have a similar issue. Don't know if you are familiar with the LaPresse App (go to AppStore and download it: it is free) but it has vertical text that begins mostly offscreen (just a small portion is visible), which you can swipe upwards and eventually beyond the top, without the tablet page height ever resizing at any moment. It behaves very similarly to an Adobe Premiere title starting off-screen at the bottom, then rolling upwards (e.g. as you would swipe, on the table), and ending off-screen over the top. That's what I'm trying to reproduce using Muse and cannot achieve. As soon as I move the text below the defined page size, Muse automatically expands that page size to accomodate the new text position. I thought of turning off vertical scrolling in the Page properties to force a static page height but the scrolling options in Tablet layout are disabled (by the way: why is that?)

  • Horizontal Scrolling indicator sometimes off

This doesn't happen overly often but on occasion the horizontal scrolling indicator drives me insane. For no reason, if is just floating in the middle of the screen. Also, the page ends at this same height, so you will scroll to the bottom of a page and it will stop before it makes you unable to scroll any further. This causes the vertical scrolling indicator to be smaller, making a page look like it is much longer than it really is.

    Terry,
There isn't an option to turn off horizontal scrolling currently. There are several third party tools that are coming out with trackpad support in the future.
I would watch for MagicPrefs to supply something like you're looking for.

    Hi,
Why does the right hand scrollbar sometimes disappear on Safari 3.1? Very annoying!
    Thanks

Refreshing doesn't work for me either. This is new for me since I installed 3.x
Also, the program crashes when it quits, and it no longer displays pdfs from certain sites.

  • CSS - Overflow: Scroll

Hi, I have a question about Overflow: Scroll option. heres
    the scneario:
Say I have a box 500px wide, 250 high. theres too much text
to fit into that box, so i go into my css positioning tab and
change "Overflow: " to "Overflow: Scroll". Now in a browser the box
will have a scroll bar. But it has both horizonal & vertical
bars. the bottom one (i'm calling it the horizontal scroll bar) is
grayed out and you cannot use it, but the vertical scroll bar is
usuable so you can scroll up and down to read the text, which works
great. But heres the issue: the horizontal one looks really ugly...
how would i make it so the horizontal one does not show, and only
the vertical scroll bar will? or vis versa for other scenarios?
While were at it, could i change the way the scroll bar
    looks, like some websites do?
    Thanks.

    I have begun always using
    :root { overflow-y:scroll; }
to force a scrollbar on FF and Safari on all pages. It seems
    to work
    fine....

  • What happened to the scrolling picture google image search in iOS 7 Safari?

When I used google image search before I updated to iOS 7, I could just scroll through the pictures. Now it's more like a regular computer, and I have to click on a picture one at a time to enlarge, and then go back and view the others. Am I missing something? How do I get the easy scrolling image search back - or did Apple remove this feature for iOS 7?

Google's working on the Safari iOS 7 incompatibility with Google Images:

  • Video playback in Safari iOS 8 is horrible now

Any videos I play through websites in Safari all are horrible load times in the player now. A play button appears on screen, I wait some more, and THEN the video plays. This is the same wether on LTE or WIFI.
Sometimes video skips around when playing, and unlike before in iOS 7, I do not see how much of the video has 'loaded' anymore. Overall very horrible experience  watching any videos through Safari (this includes YouTube's mobile website).

I've restored, but don't see anything else I can try. These problems (or vast majority thereof, e.g. video seeking problems) occur across every iOS device I own or have ever used that runs iOS 8. Are you unable to reproduce them? I'd be very interested to hear if not.
The only thing I've noticed is occasionally is the video screen will not close when pressing Done. I then have to force close Safari. As for poor video quality I haven't experienced that,

Gaming apps freezes for few seconds , then resumes by itself or crashes sometimes ,after upgrading to iOS 8.3 on iphone 6

Update: my phone's connecting to the WiFi again. I don't know what did the trick. I did nothing since reinstalling the software. It hadn't worked then, it is now. I tried connecting to my dad's phone's hotspot( he uses a Moto G), and it worked. I then tried connecting to the WiFi at a friend's house, and when I came back home, my phone was able to connect to my WiFi! Is it of any significance that my friend's router doesn't require a password? My issue has been resolved( for now; I hope I'm not counting my chickens before they've hatched). For anyone facing a similar issue, I suggest you try everything I did:
    1. Turn your router off for a minimum of 30 seconds, turn it back on and try connecting.
    2. Click on the WiFi network you are connected to, scroll to the bottom, tap "Renew Lease".
    3. Do a soft and hard reset.
    4. Reset network settings.
    5. Back your data up, erase all content from settings menu, restore from backup.
    6. Reinstall your software( put it in recovery mode).
I am not sure which of the above worked for me. Make sure you try everything. If none of the above works, take it to a genius bar or an authorised service provider. Good luck! :)

  • Doesn't display dialog to open file (Safari iOS 8.1)

    Hello.
There is some repeatable problem in Safari iOS 8.1:
Safari does not display a dialog to open a file (archive .zip for example) after downloading it from hosting via temporary direct link (see screenshot 1 - front page),
although the correct dialog form on the page can be seen in miniatures layer (see screenshot 2 - miniature).
So I can't open downloaded .zip file in any other application, because I can't see any control elements on the front page.
    Thanks
    & kind regards.

I seem to have resolved the problem, though the solution is very surprising.
I tried Settings > Safari > Names and Passwords.
I got the "Passcode Lock Suggested" message, so I cancelled. Names and Passwords is still off.
BUT now I'm still signed on when I open a new tab.
Also, I'm still signed on when I turn the iPad off and on again, which never used to happen.
Another behaviour it changed was when you close the first window (using the "double square" icon to reveal the hidden close button). That used to bring up Private Browsing (until the next time you turn the iPad on), but now it produces a blank Safari page (a good thing) and frequently visited sites (a very bad thing, since all tracking options are off, to the best of my understanding).
I'm also getting Search Engine hints from Google, even though that option's turned off.
In the OP, I reported "I enabled the Favorites bar to stop the bug which makes tab 1 go blank when tab 2 is closed." Not quite true. The bug happens less often, but still occurs. Sometimes it's fixed by tapping the bar at the top, but more often I have to go to menu and reselect Safari.
Overall, Safari is obviously very buggy, I'm amazed that it has been released without testing.

  • Desktop files are sometimes disappearing.

When I start my computer my desktop files are sometimes disappearing and when I tell the computer to organize the desktop they will return.  I have been using Mac's for 15 years and never have I had this problem until I updated to OS X Mountain Lion.  Can anyone tell me how to fix this.  Is it possible this problem is because I use two monitors?
    Thank you for any help.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; echo; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -ef
    Step 4
    ls -A /e*/{cr,la,mach}* {,/}Lib*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -ef
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

My address bar has disappeared in Safari 5.1. When I click "Customize Toolbar"  to fix it, the Home and arrow buttons become unusable--they just click but nothing happens.See image below.
I have to close the window and open a new one to get the buttons to work, but the address bar does not return.
    I am running OS 10.6.8.
    Any suggestions?

Sorry, can't view the image. Try reformatting to JPG.
Re the toolbar. Since this issue started after the 5.1 update, could be a third party Safari add on that was compatible with the prior version of Safari but not 5.1 that's preventing the Toolbar to load correctly.
Read here > Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

    mouse pointer will sometimes disappear

I think dissapearring mouse cursor has been a bug since 10.4. happens to me every day regardless of whether i am using a computer with more than one screen or not, and regardless of the mouse being used. I agree that the problem has gotten much worse with 10.8, with both wired and non-wired devices.
after much research and thousands of dollars invested in different mouse softwares, input devices, and monitors, I have determined that old simple wired input products are better. wi-fi is getting worse. the less amount of monitors are better. apple brand input products are the worst, but more importantly, are not entirely at fault.
I would suggest anyone suffering from disapearing cursors, that are not wifi, bluetooth, battery, monitor, software, web browser or website related, contact apple and complain. lots.
personally, I think this is a marketing bug, eventually apple will be entirely touch based, the only true method of eliminating mouse disapearance is to eliminate mouse and cursor altogether. to assist that future of marketing, bugs like this will proceed to worsen.
