Scroll wheel gone haywire

Recently the scroll wheel on my mouse has gone nuts. It just won't scroll smoothly at all, but jumps up and down all over the page or the website I'm trying to scroll through.
The odd thing is, it's done it on two separate computers, with two completely different mice(?). And it happened around the same time. I'm wondering now if some update may have screwed this up so it doesn't work any more.
The mouse at work is an Ativa optical mouse and the one at home is a Microsoft optical mouse, I believe. Both systems are Tiger, though here at work it's on a G5 Dual Intel. The home computer is the G4.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has noticed this odd change, or if by some weird coincidence it's just happened on my two computers. If this is a known issue, is there a known fix?

If run in Single User Mode it's little danger, in fact it has cured many Problems, but you can do all those yourself step by step if you want a longer drawn out way to do them.
it sounds like it only fixes "startup problems,"
Nope, that is usually it's purpose, but it can right so many other problems.
Also, what "cache files" is it clearing out?
Practically all of them, but new good ones will be recreated on the first bootup.
That sounds like something I might actually need. I'm not exactly sure what's going to happen to all my OS preferences and settings etc.
The only way it vould possibly mess any settings up are if thse files are already damaged.

  • Loss of Mouse Scroll Wheel Function

I took a leap and a leap of faith upgrading from Firefox 3.something to 11.0. I'm working through the little annoying differences in the user interface, but I'm having a problem with scrolling.
I can't put my finger on any particular web site or page size, but I find that occasionally my mouse scroll wheel will stop working with Firefox and I must use the scroll bar to move through a document. Once it goes, it's gone. I can move to another tab that previously scrolled with the wheel and it no longer does.
If I close Firefox and restart it, the scroll wheel works again (even with the page on which it previously quit. If I leave Firefox running but switch to another application, the scroll wheel works there, so it's unlikely that the driver has become corrupted.
I'm running Windows XP SP3 and Firefox 11.0 (downloaded and installed 4/5/2012)

I doubt that I have a PDF open in another tab because I don't use the PDF plug-in to Firefox. When I go to a web site with a PDF and click on it, I get a pop-up that asks if I want to open it (I use Foxit) or save the file. I often have a PDF open when I'm on a web site however. I just opened one and everything's still OK. Then I went to a web site where I clicked on a PDF and told it to open it with Foxit, and things are still OK.
Like I said, I haven't yet found anything that consistently makes it happen.
As for updates, I really want to know if there's anything specific that might cause this problem. I don't like to make updates, not even Windows updates, unless I see that the update either solves a problem or gives me a feature that I really need. I look at the Windows updates and they all seem to be about security, which isn't a problem here. In the case of installing the new Firefox, I was getting tired of web sites telling me that I had an unsupported web browser (though usually I could get what I wanted). I'm NOT going to just let Windows do what it wants with my computer. I depend on it too much to do that.
Could it be that something that Firefox needs is running out of memory after browsing for a while? Is there something I could check for that? I think I have 1 GB of RAM in this Pentium 4.

  • Does external PS/2 mouse w/scrolling wheel conflict w/Trackpoint?

I've got an x31 running Windows XP pro SP3.  Everything is fine.
But when I plug in an external mouse into the PS/2 port of my media slice or docking station:
      - the scrolling wheel on the mouse (logitech or sony) doesn't work
      - the psysical movement required to move the cursor across the screen is silly
(nearly 10", vs 3 or 4 with a USB mouse)
    Ideas??

OK, I pieced together the solution.  This probably applies to all thinkpads.
The PS/2 port, to properly recognize hardware, needs the system to be power-cycled.  So, if you already have a system up and plug a PS/2 mouse in...it will only be partially recognized.  The amount of physical movement required to move the mouse is excessive.  Buttons might not work.  Scrolling wheel won't work.
But if you power cycle the system, the external PS/2 mouse will work fine and the Trackpoint will be disabled (for as long as the external mouse is plugged in).
So my problem:  I was putting my laptop into the docking station and ultrabase but I wans't power-cycling.  I was just ejecting, putting the system in suspend, etc.
The SOLUTION:  when putting your laptop into the docking station or ultrabase with a PS/2 mouse, hibernate the system first.  Since the system is powered down, when you turn it on it will detect the PS/2 mouse and all will be well.
I have no idea if this applies to Win2K, Vista, or 7...just to WinXP.  Confirmed this on two separate x31s and two different brands of PS/2 mice.
To answer the question I originally started with -- yes, the trackpoint does conflict with external PS/2 mice....but the system manages the conflict just fine as long as you power-cycle the hardware after hooking up the external mouse.
Some of this applies to serial mice (no, they haven't gone away from my basement...), but none of it applies to truly plug-and-play devices like USB or bluetooth mice.

  • Can I use the mouse scroll wheel for zooming the timeline?

    Howdy...
As a recent convert from Vegas, one of the best features that I miss is using the mouse scroll wheel to zoom into and out of the timeline..
Anyone know a way I can set this up in FCP6?
    Thanks...
    -Ben

    Yes.
(I know I'm gonna get flamed by the pros here who will advise NEVER to use third party plug-ins, but... I've been a heavy user of FCP for years and NEVER had any problem with this, so here goes:)
Install USB Overdrive, and program your mouse with:
    - wheel_up to cmd+plus (=zoom in) and
    - wheel_down to cmd+minus (=zoom out).
I actually use clickedwheelup and clickedwheeldown for this zooming in and out, keeping the plain vanilla wheel_up and wheel_down for, well, up and down (or clip_left and clip_right on the timeline).
Nice thing is, it then works in the Viewer and Canvas to zoom in and out, too.
    HTH.

  • Zen Xtra 40 GB Scroll Wheel Prob

Hi! My Zen Extra 40 GB, which my husband purchased on December 9, 2004 (warranty is almost up), has a problem with the scroll wheel. Sometimes it will pause the song that is playing when I try to select other music. Has anyone else had this problem, and does it warrant sending it to be serviced? I can't find the original receipt, but I did print out a copy of the transaction off of WalMart's website. If it's going to cost a fortune to fix, I guess I could li've with it. I just noticed this problem this morning, and it doesn't always pause the song, but I don't know if it could get worse over time. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

I had this exact same problem with the scroll wheel recently. Luckily I have solved the problem thanks to users here and on Nomadness.net. In fact my only posts on this board are because of this annoyance.
I was also having the scroll wheel pausing tracks and playing tracks when it shouldn't have been doing that.
For me it came down to hardware. I actually got my Xtra aroudn the same time you did and only a few weeks ago did I finally fix it. It was going on for about 2 months, and it just got to the point where I didnt want to use the player because it became such a hassle.
What I did was go to Radio Shack and get a can of Switch Electronics Cleaner. It was like 0 bucks or so. I also got a pack of .4mm phillips head screwdrivers as I was going to open the unit and fix it that way but to my dismay and maybe for the better the screws wouldnt budge on the unit. I then took the little straw thing that can attach onto the end of the spray nozzle and sprayed a small amount (one split second spray) right onto the side of the unit by the scroll wheel. The cleaner is safe on the plastic. I then worked the scroll wheel back and forth so the stuff would get into it and lube it nicely.
I fired up my player and at first it still had the problem, but literally after about a minute the problem was gone. I use my player all the time and since doing this not once have I had the scroll wheel acting as the play/pause button. Its back to what it was like when I first bought it.

  • IPod 1st Gen (Scroll wheel) not recognized by iTunes

iPod 1st Gen (with scroll wheel) will not connect to iTunes 12.1 on MacBookPro.  Charging when I plug it in, want to add music to it, but iTunes will not recognize it.  Anyone have any suggestions or does anyone know if this iPod is no longer supported by iTunes?

  • Scroll Wheel no longer works in version 4.4 RC

My scroll wheel no longer works after installing Lightroom 4.4. In all previous versions, I was able to use my Logitech scroll device to adjust the sliders in the development panel.  In the 4.4 version, the scroll wheel no longer works and instead of adjusting an individual slider, it scrolls the whole development panel up and down. I did uninstall the mouse driver and reinstalled but that did not work. The mouse works just fine in all other programs. I think it is a bug with the 4.4 version. I am operating in Windows 7. Any suggestions for a fix?

  • Why can't I use the scroll wheel in Photoshop CC 2014?

    Hi,
I have Photoshop CC 2014 on my laptop. It was working perfectly but then I had to reinstall Windows. Once I had reinstalled Windows and Photoshop I discovered that I could no longer use the scroll wheel on my mouse to move around documents in Photoshop. I can't scroll up to move the document up, scroll down to move the document down, use Alt+Scroll to zoom in/out or use Shift+Scroll to move left/right.
I've looked in the options and the option to use the scroll wheel to zoom is enabled - still not working.
Any ideas? Tried Googling but can't really find any solutions.
    Thanks all!

I'm having the same issue. Scroll wheel works fine in all Adobe products besides Photoshop. I've tried reinstalling Photoshop, plugging in the mouse to a different USB port, reinstalling the mouse driver, and restarting my computer multiple times. This bug makes Photoshop practically useless, as everything takes about twice as long to get done.
I really hope we get a fix for this soon. So far CC has been a huge disappointment, filled with small, productivity-destroying bugs like this one.

  • Scroll wheel does not work after update to 8.0

After updating firefox to 8.0 the scroll wheel on my mouse (A4-Tech USB mouse) stopped working.
Many plugins are now also disbaled which limits the usabiity of firefox in my day to day use.

I fiddled with the settings, but eventually gave up and went back to 3.6, at least it works.

  • My scroll wheel click doesn't work anymore.

So, you know how you can open up something in a new tab in chromium by pushing the scroll wheel on your mouse in? Well, I used to be able to do that until recently and now it just flat out doesn't work.
Is this a hardware issue? My mouse is in fantastic shape and the scroll wheel works fine otherwise. I tried googling this but found some really old threads for xorg files that didn't exist or I don't know how to find.

X doesn't see you pushing it in. I'd check if it works in a different OS (e.g. Windows or Linux LIve CD).
Does the wheel move down when pressed? Maybe you could fix it by disassembling the mouse.

    Hello Steve.
You may be having a problem with some extension or plugin that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
If you detect a faulty add-on, you should contact its author for support. You can also search for alternatives. Site filters are relatively common in the add-ons gallery: [http://addons.mozilla.org addons.mozilla.org].

  • How can I disable right/left mouse buttons and scroll wheel in PDF?

    Hi all,
I want the user to have to click on "forward" and "back" buttons that I've created in the PDF, in order to move around in it. Is there any way to disable the mouse buttons and scroll wheel from allowing users to go back and forth?
Also, a separate question: I want the user to click on embedded images and receive either a pop-up comment, or be re-directed to another page in the PDF. Is there any way to set this up?
    Thanks for your time!

You can achieve what you want in Question 1, just not via scripting.  You would need to create a plug-in in C/C++ that would be installed on the client machine.  Other than that option, try67 is correct - there is no way to achieve this from the document-level.

  • Is there a way to make the scroll wheel move up and down instantly like you could with previous versions, instead of moving slowly up and down?

I've only recently updated my firefox to v 15.0.1 after using v 10 for so long, and I was wondering if there is a way to make the scroll wheel move up and down instantly without having it slowly crawl to it's spot?

    you can disable smooth scrolling.

  • Clicking the scroll wheel does not open a new firefox window

I'm running Windows 7 x64 SP1. I use the scroll wheel to click items in the task bar to open another instance of those items. Eg I scroll-click a Firefox or Excel or Explorer or whatever item in the taskbar, and it opens another instance of that program. I use this feature to open a new instance of FireFox rather than switching to the FF window, then using control-n to open a new window.
I just upgraded to FireFox 6 from FF4.x. Since doing so, scroll-clicking the FF item in the taskbar does not open a new FF window. It does, well, nothing.
I installed FF6 on a clean Win7 x86 (RTM) build in a VM. When I use the scroll-click feature in the taskbar, it works as expected: it opens a new FF window.
Things I have tried: A different mouse; updating video drivers (I doubted this would make a difference, but it needed to be done anyway, so I thought I'd mention it); running FF in safe mode (ie with all plugins etc disabled).
I'm doing a little experimentation right now with respect to x86/x64, RTM/SP1, clean FF6/upgrade from 4.x and other differences that might highlight why it works as expected in my VM but not on my physical machine.
I'm curious to know if anyone else has experienced this problem since upgrading to FF6.
    Max

Respectfully, that answer isn't particularly helpful. I have already demonstrated that middle-clicking (mouse wheel click) will open a new instance of FF, and other programs. This was true before the upgrade from FF4 to FF6, and is true on all my VM builds (Windows 7 default install with nothing but FF installed).
Nevertheless, I've tried shift-left-click, and it does not open a new instance. It will only open a new instance if I pin FF to the taskbar, which I have already stated I do not want to do. This new behaviour is unique to FF. Other applications (Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, whatever) all behave as expected. It is only Firefox that is misbehaving, and it is only misbehaving since the upgrade.
My issue is that FF has changed its behaviour with respect to middle-clicking since upgrading from 4 to 6. I'd welcome helpful comments about getting FF to behave.

  • Scroll Wheel no longer works. Please Help !

About a month ago, my scroll wheel suddenly just stopped working. I now have very limited use of it. For example, I cannot scroll through my song list, because it takes about 5 minutes of constantly trying to scroll, for it to move down one song. The only way I can listen to music,if to have it on shuffle.
Please help me! Its driving me up the wall.

It sounds like a job for service, but if you're confident/have a technically able friend you could see if the connector is dirty/has come loose.
I posted this a few threads down:
Ok, this is a potentially easy fix for the confident.
BEFORE DOING ANY WORK ON AN IPOD, ENSURE THAT YOU'VE SWITCHED IT OFF (HOLD PLAY) AND PUT IT ON HOLD.
Go get a small jeweller's flat-headed screwdriver (~2-3mm wide), and gently pry away the white bit from the case. Inside there should be a metal bracket. Using the screwdriver, ease away the metal bracket from all four corners, trying not to bend the bracket. Be careful, they have a tendency to spring free. Once you've removed this, with your mini face up there is a brown plug connector (big square of silicone. Gently remove that with the screwdriver, ensure that it's relatively clean, and push it home. Reassemble the iPod, and let me know how you get on.
It sounds less likely in your case than the other, since he 'd said that he'd dropped it, but it's worth a try if it's outside the warranty.
