Scrolling Feeds !Newbie Alert!

Hi,
I have a basic website which I'm trying to make a little more
interesting. I have added a news feed which has around 5 items on
it per day and comprises of small pictures and text. However, the
news feed is the whole length of the page and I kind of want it
show two at a time and scroll (stopping on mouse over). Naturally,
I do not host the images or text and instead have source code. I'
have searched and can find text or image scrollers but nothing
which covers external source code. Any ideas?
Now I am a complete newbie so apologies if this is the
dumbest question ever but in addition to the above, how do I stop
the sidebar that I put the feed into from expanding?
You can check out my 'play' site to see the source code here
www.stephenbowes.com but this is test ground not the real site so I
know images are missing etc.
Thanks for your time.

Search the web for scrolling RSS ticker and you'll find
several free or inexpensive scripts.

  • Newbie Alert: Problem with saving downloads to a network drive

I'm a new Mac user so, I apologize for the newbie question.
I've have a NAS on my home network. I can see it and access it just fine. I have Firefox set to ask me where I want something downloaded. I don't get the option of putting, say a PDF in a folder on my network storage device.
I can put it anywhere on the iMac's hard drive or even a USB/Firewire drive but not a network location. In Windows, you'd map a drive and be off to the races.
How do I do this on a Mac?
    Thank you in advance,
    Rick

AFAIK, not doable for NAS HDs. Since you're new to Macs, you're going to have erase windoze stuff from you lexicon, check these out:

  • Removing double scroll bars in Alerts in 11g

When opening Alerts in 11g, it looks like the alert is a panel inside the browser instead of opening up a new browser window. For reports that are large, there is a scrollbar within a scrollbar.
How can the size of the alert box be increased so that only one scrollbar shows?

I am just wondering whether you were able to fix this issue? If so, can you please share with me.
    thanks

  • Need Some Help ! Newbie Alert !

Ok I am a absolute newbie so please go easy on me if I ask anything too stupid lol...
OK just recently I started shooting in RAW... I have been playing around with how best then to edit/convert those pics... it's a toss up between batch processing them all in Camera Raw (I have version 4.0 at the moment not sure how new that is !) it seems to allow me to make changes to a bunch of pictures at the same time... or if I should really push the boat out and use LightRoom... I have just got a copy of 2.3 but havent played around with it yet... I aint overly technical so not sure if it will be a bit beyond me lol...
The questions I have... when I have tweeked the pics in Camera Raw, and I save as JPG's the colours are not the same in the JPG... they become a lot less vibrant and look washed out... is there any way to stop this ? It did suggest I saved them as DNG's ??? What are DNG's ? Am I suppose to save them as DNG's and then convert into JPG's ?

In CS3, it is under Edit/Color Settings.  I don't know the right way to set up color settings.  I have mine set to North America general-purpose 2.  In the working space I have RGB set to sRGB IEC61966-2.1.  I don't worry about the other ones.  And in the Color Management Policies I have them all set to Preserve Embedded Profiles.  It works for me, BUT I always have to remember to convert to profile before I save my final image.  There are others who might disagree with how I have my color management set up in Photoshop.  And they might have some better ideas for you.  That is just how I set mine up quite some time ago, and I have just gotten used to it.
If you want to export from ACR in sRGB, click on the blue hyperlink near the bottom of the ACR screen and set it up there.  Then you wouldn't have to worry about converting the profile later in Photoshop.
Whether or not you use the DNG converter is a personal choice that you will have to make.  Many of the Adobe personnel seem to recommend converting to DNG as part of a routine workflow.  I haven't adopted that policy for myself.
There is a book entitled, "Real World Camera Raw with Photoshop CSx", where x is the version of CS that you have.  The original edition was written by Bruce Fraser, who has since passed away.  The later versions have been edited and updated by Jeff Schewe.  It is an essential addition to your library.  It is available from Amazon.com.  Don't even think about it, just get the book

  • Line Loss -- Newbie Alert:

    Greetings,
    Newbie DAQ question here:
How long of a cable (conducter size yet to be choosen) will I incure significant
line loss? I will be sampling signals in the 1-10v range at a low frequency
(1 s/sec'ish). The cable will be about 65 feet.
    Two questions:
    Too much signal loss?
Is there an infor resource where I can learn about this stuff?
I have a minor electronics background, but I am mostly a medical person.
    Thanks...Mark

    Hi Mark:
This depends on the output impedence of the thing (sensor or whatever) transmitting the signal, and also the input inpedence of the device receiving the signal. Most NI devices, I think, have pretty high input impedence, so the line loss would probably not be a problem, unless the transmitter also has a very high impedence. If, for example the input impedence of the A/D card signal conditioner was 1 megohm, and if the output impedence of the transmitter was, for example, 50 Ohms and the cable resistance was, for example 10 Ohms, then the error due to line loss would be something like (50+10)/1 million-- All these numbers are pretty conservative guesses, so probably you'll have no problems from simple line loss.
The more serious issues are rela
ted to noise and "ground loop" errors. Depending on what other electrical equipment is in the vicinity, depending on how you ground the sensor and the A/D board, and depending on whether you use simple, shielded or coaxial cables, these can get to cause SERIOUS problems if you need great accuracy in your measurement.
Check out good discussions of this in the LabView documentation, NI's web site, and (my favorite, as someone not trained as an electrical engineer who has to sometimes commit acts of electrical engineering) Paul Horowitz & Winfield Hill "The Art of Electronics" ISBN 0-521-37095-7.
    Good Luck with your measurements!

  • Newbie Alert Question

    HI,
I am trying to display an Alert before a midlet exits and I have bound it to the Exit Command, i.e. in the commandAction I create an Alert alert and call display.setCurrent(alert) (Alert.FOREVER, AlertType.CONFIRMATION) before calling destroyApp(false) and notifyDestroyed(). Problem is, the Alert does not work as expected. Help.
    Thanks.

Same problem as me. I can't get it.
Actually, I'm still trying to get past the piss-poor tools Sun provides... Forte won't run for more than 1/2 hour before dying, and the KToolbar isn't much better. I create a new project following the documentation, put the source code where it is, but it can't execute the midlet. Checking the files, I see it doesn't create a .JAR.
Sorry to have deviated from your question, just needed to vent.
Are you having problems with the tools? If I could only get them to run reliably, I could focus on learning the J2ME coding!

  • (newbie alert) - simple question?

My Dell is four years old and dying. I am considering an iMac G5. One of the main things I would want to be able to do with it, right out of the box, is as follows. I asked someone at the Apple store if this was easy to do, and his response seemed very complicated. Would a new iMac G5 using just the pre-loaded iLife stuff be able to the following:
I have burned many old home family movies from VHS to DVD using a DVD recorder hooked up to the VCR. The DVD recorder is a cheap model, so it doesn't allow me to edit much at all; I more or less get just a straight transfer of whatever is on the VHS tape, over to the DVD.
I'd like to be able to pop in one of those DVDs I've generated from those VHS tapes, and then be able to really aggressively work with that "footage" to create montage clips into a new "movie", so maybe out of 60 minutes of raw footage of a family picnic from 1985, I want to be able generate a watchable 5-minute DVD clip that just shows the interesting stuff. I'd like to be able to lay music from iTunes over top of this, add titles and credits and whatnot, and then burn to DVD to share with family members, or upload to a web location (.Mac?) for family members to access and view.
It would be nice if I could also incorporate digital still photos from my digital camera, and/or short MPEG movies my "still" camera can take (each just 15 seconds long).
Is this all within the easy grasp of the iLife suite?
    Thanks!

    Thanks.
Last night, I took a close look at the inputs and outputs on my little JVC mini-DV video camera, which is about four years old. It's pretty clear it has no analog-in ports, so I don't think I can use it as the go-between unit from the VHS for a transfer of the VHS content onto the iMac. Reason being, the only "in" port on the mini-DV camera is a little "DV in /out" port, and I certainly don't believe the VCR has any type of corresponding "DV" output line. So, as for getting the old home movies from the VHS tapes into the iMac for editing and DVD buring, I believe -- based on the responses I've received in this forum -- it does boil down to using something like the Canopus ADVC-100 to allow me to make that transfer.
The related question for the overall project then becomes, am I confident I'll be able to get content into mu iMac from my other main source: a small library of home movies on mini-DV cassette tapes. The JVC mini-DV camcorder has an S-video out port (plus a "headphone" audio out jack that splits to RCA audio lines), so where can I run that to get it into the iMac? Would the Canopus ADVC-100 take that in? The only other "out" line on the camcorder is that "DV in/out" line I mentioned above. Nothing anywhere says anything about firewire... is that "DV" line a standard thing? Can the iMac take it in directly? Could it run through the Canopus unit?
    Thanks a million.

  • Newbie Alert: How can I include a JSF in a JSF

Sorry for what must be a really stupidly easy question but I have tried every way I can think to get one JSF page to include another JSF page. For instance I want to include a standard site wide header. I am using jspx and have tried
    <f:subview id="header">
        <jsp:include page="header.jsf"/>

</f:subview>and every variation you can imagine (both .jsf and .jspx extentions, with and without a rendered property on the subview, including everything in the included page in f:verbatim and a million other things). My header page is as simple as <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

  • Quality Issues with Drop Zones - Newbie ALERT!

    Hello!
    First post for me here...
Just started working with Final Cut Studio 5.1 and I have some issues that I have been running into. In DVD Studio, I am grabbing a menu template (Panes Blue) and I am creating a simple text animation in Motion (720x480) NTSC and saving the Motion file then importing the Motion file into DVD studio and setting up the drop zone asset to my motion file. When I preview, the text quality is very poor! At first I thought it was just the preview, but it still looks horrible on the TV when I burn.
How do I get the best quality when creating an animation in Motion that I would like to use in a DVD studio Drop Zone?
Please let me know if you need further info!
    Jason

    here's the issue:
DVDSP doesn't encode progressive scan. it doesn't matter what your encode settings are. I've done extensive testing on this issue. here's what happens:
I made an element that fits perfectly into a specified drop zone. the menu Background image or movie is rendered progressive scan (not interlaced). I drop the element into the drop zone and hit Simulate. Since the Drop zone and it's element need to be encoded to Mpeg2 in order to play properly, DVDSP interlaces it to make it work. Result: bad image compression and the drop zone area is badly interlaced while the rest of the image isn't.
This was something that frustrated me for weeks while i was trying to find a solution. As far as I know there is only one solution; Since DVDSP uses Compressor to encode files on build, there must be a way of intercepting the process and changing the settings that DVDSP uses to encode it's files. There is no preference for this and since the encoding takes place in the background, there is no way of changing this without getting a programmer to figure out how to do it, and even then, i don't know if it's possible. If someone can figure out how do do this, there'll be a lot of Happy people wanting it.

  • Newbie alert! - need help getting started

    Hello!
(If there is a better place to post this message, please forgive me, and tell
    me where I should post.)
My team is moving to the Weblogic app server platform, and my current task is
    to get my feet wet.
I've picked up a few things after digging around in the documentation, and on
this website, but I've got a few holes in my knowledge. If someone could point
me at where I should read, I'd appreciate it!
We've got JBuilder 9 Weblogic Edition installed on our dev boxen (Win2k PCs),
an Oracle database (Oracle 9i on a Sun box) prepared, and an application server
going (Sun Ultra-10 running Solaris 9 64-bit, named "wlapp"). I've installed Weblogic
Server 8.1 to the app server, and it seems to have installed correctly. I've managed
to get the medrec example running on that server (it took a little tweaking of
the script), but I have no idea how to access it.
I did a "ps -ef" and I can see a process called "htt_server" with a parameter
"-port 9010" running on it, but pointing a web browser to "http://wlapp:9010"
    does nothing useful.
    In the tutorial (http://edocs.bea.com/wls/docs81/medrec_tutorials/index.html)
it helpfully says "If you are interested in viewing or using the complete MedRec
application before starting the tutorials, you can use the pre-built MedRec domain
that is installed with WebLogic Server." It fails to mention how to make this
    first, probably obvious, step.
Can anyone tell me how to try out my (hopefully running) MedRec example application?
    Thanks in advance! --- Eric

    Hi,
Can you provide us the server configuration you entered in the Project creation wizard (New Flex Project -> Configure ColdFusion server wizard)?
The error shown looks like a configuration problem.

  • Strange String literal issue - Newbie alert !!

    Hello all,
Please forgive if this is dumb but I have a deadline to meet.
    I have a function func_name(int num, String ip_s1, String ip_s2)
It works just fine if I do
    somaclass.func_name(123,"string1","string2");
    but not for someclass.func_name(123,string_var,string_var2);
even though the function "receives" the input correctly.
I have no clue as to what to do. Please help !

You have a bug in your code. My guess is that when you're testing with "string1", "string2", your code can cope with those values, but when you pass the values of String variables, your code can't cope with the values in question.
It's hard to say exactly what the problem is, however, since you give so little detail. It's not clear what's happening that's wrong, other than not working fine.
The best thing you can do is add some debugging code. See if you can spot a pattern with the values of the variables.
My general guess is that one or both of the variables in question are null, and you're dereferencing the string arguments. And if it's not that, then my guess is that one or both is zero-length, and your code assumes non-zero length. And if it's not that, then my guess is that you're searching the strings for certain substrings, and the substrings are not present, and your code assumes the presence of the substrings.

NO CLUE on how to solve the errorFirst step STOP using a JEE server to figure out the problem.
Write a simple Java console app to test your ODBC set up. If you can't get that to work then you can't get it to work in JEE.

  • Newbie alert! How to add a watermark

Maybe I just missed this in the manual. I admit to being greener than grass with this sort of software. And as much as I search the 'help' pdf that came with 1.1, I still can't figure this out.
I've created a plate, and the name shows up all nice and pretty when I start Lightroom.
But I can't figure out how to add a watermark to a picture.
Specifically, I'd prefer to add it on import of the RAW file, but I'd settle for being able to add a watermark on the creation of a jpg file.
Currently I take the jpg into photoshop where I have a watermark layer that I apply.
But I'd rather not leave lightroom at all, if possible. That's kinda the point of getting Lightroom.
Any help or guidance that you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, that was the year I was born.
So now I've figured out how to add the meta data. I've even created a metadata template that gets applied when I import. This is a good thing.
When I check the exported jpg files, the extended properties include the copyright information that my template entered. Yet another good thing
    however...
There is no watermark on the jpg!
Yes, the "Add copyright watermark" option is checked in the "Image Settings" area of the export. (If I could figure out how to attach the screen print, I'd show you.) And the copyright information shows up in the extended properties of the jpg. But no watermark.
If it is relevant, I am using Vista with Lightroom 1.1
I really did rtfm. And I thought I had it figured out after a bit of hacking. But I was wrong.
    Suggestions?
