Scrolling in Library mode is slower, than in Develop Mode
I've got quite a disent hardwere (i3, 6GB) and I don't use big catalogs, I render 1:1 previews, but Lr works really slow, espesially scrollind in Library mode.
Sorry I couldn't answer What Operating system? What LR version?
What do you mean by "scrolling"? (Scrolling between images in grid view? Scrolling between images in loupe mode? Scrolling inside image in loupe mode when viewing it 1:1?)
Also, could you define your "slow"? For example "when I press right arrow (next image) in loupe mode, it takes 5 secods before image is fully rendered."
Sorry I couldn't answer your question.

Table Values in Preview Mode are Different Than in Development Mode
Any idea why the values in a table row would be different in Preview mode than in development mode? They are only different in 1 row. The values in this row refer to values in another part of the spreadsheet that are generated by formulas. They apprear fine in Xcelsius but change in the SWF.
Hi Tony,
Thank you for sending the files to me. Our QA testers noted that one problem with the spreadsheets is that the Chart is linked to cells in your spreadsheet that are protected. This will prohibit the Chart from accessing the data in those cells. Can you send me the files again, but with all cells unprotected? -
Why does the application built executable run slower than my developement lib.
The Response given was LabView 5.0.1.f1 specific. Iam however, using LabView 6.i. The Application runs approximatley 3 to 40 times slower than the developement library. Additionally the Write to spreadsheet data is corrupted when using the application executable. Is there a different solution for 6.i ????
Tnx
Len KrausThat does not sound right. I recommend rebuilding your VI. Beore you do, open the top level VI and press contol-shift-run arrow to perform a manual binary recompile. This makes LabVIEW recompile the whole code. Most times you will not see anything happen but occasionally an error will surface. Be sure to save the VI then rebuild it.
You may also need to reinstall the LabVIEW run time engine and/or LabVIEW. I would start with the run time engine first. -
In LR 5. Recently I noticed my processed images are sharper in the Library mode than in the Develop mode. This makes doing adjustments difficult because I can't really tell the effect of the adjustments.
PC, i7, 24GB RAM.
I've tried purging the Camera Raw cache. It's been suggested to purge the Preview cache but I cannot find the Preview cache file. It's also been suggested to clear the Preferences but those file don't show up in a search either even though my PC search is set up to show hidden files and folders.
Any solutions?Images can be different between the camera-rendered preview you see before Import and the default Adobe rendering, but after import the thumbnail in the LR grid view shouldn’t be a different tone than the image in the main area. Is that what you’re saying you’re seeing?
Can you show us a screenshot with both the thumbnail filmstrip and the central area visible as well as the histogram? -
I have Always-On synchronization on some databases, We want to change from asynchronize mode to synchronize mode, I tested to see what the change in performance between the two, and found that in general the select statements keep the same
duration with and without synchronize mode, most of the update\insert usually take around * 4 times from the asynchronize mode, BUT some updates take much longer. I would like to understand why things take MUCH longer (I understand that working with synchronize
mode is a 2 phase commit and should take * 4 times, but I can't understand why some of them take 50 - 100 times more).
1. One query is an update made on a table with few records (up to 40 records), this update run 250K times a day, and a very simple update on this table takes * 98 than without synchronize mode
1. An update on a big table with 2 million records, using a query that specify the unique column in the primary cluster key, takes 50 times more.
What are the factors that have dramatic influence on performance when 2 phase commit (asynchronize mode) is used?I've never even looked at the details for SQL Server, but on any kind of a system doing synchronous updates, you have to figure there is a fixed cost, a variable cost, and a queuing cost. The fixed cost always hits whether its a big transaction or
a small transaction, let's guess it's about 0.1 seconds for a round trip. Variable cost depends on how much is updated, let's say it's linear, and is maybe 0.05 seconds for a couple of small rows. The queuing cost varies from 0 to huge.
So if you have a small transaction on a local system that takes 0.05 seconds (50 milliseconds), then just one will incur the local 0.05, plus 0.10, plus 0.05, and zero queuing cost, so 0.05 -> 0.20, about 4x.
But if you have something that runs 250k times a day I hope it's faster, maybe it's only 0.01 seconds locally, and that turns to 0.01 + 0.10 + 0.01 + q, so 0.01 -> 0.12+q, so it's at *least* 12x slower, and maybe if you get 100 of them
in the same second you start incurring queuing delays also, in fact you may have similar queuing delays on the local system and remote system besides any communications queuing, but if just the synchronization system has some queuing limits and it even gets
to 0.30 seconds then 0.01 -> 0.42, or 42x, and you start seeing what can happen. If your local transaction is only 0.001 seconds when not synchronized, then you'd have 100x slowdown just on the fixed overhead!
IOW, synchronized systems and tons of small, fast transactions just don't fit together very well.

Why is the image not as sharp in library mode then it is in develop mode?
and the image i email reflects the library image/version (less sharp) not the develop mode image/version.
I just open my MBP before plugging up the TB display. Then after the TB comes on, I close the MBP back into clamshell mode. Works better for me that way.
Does that work for you as well?

Why don't my library images show up in the develop module? There is a big blue space with an X through it.
Disable GPU acceleration in your Lightroom preferences.

Ever since moving to OS 10.9.x my MacBook Pro has operated slower than before the change. Today I accessed the "monitor" and there scrolling up on the screen was this:

What is this?Looks like remote access software.

Slow/Laggy scrolling in Library
I have a library of 24,325 files. When attempting to scroll up and down with my mouse's scroll wheel in the library with all files showing, I get a delay of a half second or so before the list moves. This is absolutely maddening.
Is anyone else experiencing this??? Does anyone have a fix?
I have a serious machine (dual processor, Gig of RAM, XP Operating system, library and files all on RAID 0 partitions). If this machine can't smoothly scroll my library, nothing can.
Apple, please please please please fix.If this is the way that iTunes is designed, then the design is flawed. The reason I say this is because the other MP3 manager I use on a regular basis (MediaJukebox) has absolutely no issues at all dealing with the library of this size. Scrolling is instantaneous, searches are very, very quick and the overall experience (at least with respect to the responsiveness of the interface) is much, much nicer. I would boot iTunes altogether if it weren't for its superior iPod support, and of course the Music Store.
And good guessing on the size of the iTunes library files. The .itl file is 22MB and the .xml file is 28MB. That's not that big... iTunes should put those things in RAM and do some intelligent cacheing and I should have no issues.
One other thing, this is new as of version 5. Version 4 handled scrolling fine, even with the large library. Something changed, and changed for the worse.
And no, I don't have the artwork window open.

Why is Photoshop CC 64-bit is slower than 32-bit?
I have a very powerful system.
HP Z820 Workstation
Intel Xeon CPU E5-2670 0 @ 2.60 GHz (2 processors)
64 GB RAM
64-bit OS
Windows 7 Pro
Nvidiea GeForce GTX 690 (2 GPUs) 4 GB VRAM ea.
But here's the deal. When I'm painting or drawing down to the pixels within Photoshop CC 64-bit, it crawls, the lag is so great! I have caching on an SSD card even. Then I had an idea, I switched to the 32-bit version of Photoshop CC and everything is good, it's faster than the 64-bit version.
What gives?!? Why would the 32-bit version be faster than the 64-bit version?I know, it's VERY odd. I can actually do things faster in 32-bit mode Photoshop CC. I'm painting a very large digital painting. 180 dpi, at 40" x 24" (for print) - When I first started painting it, I was using Adobe Photoshop CS5 and it was very smooth to paint it, very fast. But now I've upgraded to Photoshop CC and the 64-bit is VERY slow, and lags terribly. Then just on a whim, I opened up Photoshop CC 32-bit and could paint just the way I did with the old CS5, very fast and smooth. It's like Photoshop CC 64-bit was a major step down in performance.
Here's my system info.

Brand new Macbook Pro slower than my 2006 Macbook
I bought a new Macbook Pro last month and upgraded the RAM to 4 GB and the hard drive to 500 GB. My previous Mac was a mid-2006 Macbook with 2 GB RAM.
I was expecting it to be noticeably faster than my 2006 Macbook (which is still running Tiger/10.4), but it isn't. Two things are particularly noticeable.
1) Startup time. The 2006 Macbook is 5 or 10 seconds faster starting up.
2) Safari. Safari is a couple of seconds faster loading identical websites on the 2006 Macbook. I tried updating Safari on the Macbook Pro to the new Safari 4 beta, and that is slightly faster, but still noticeably slower than on my Macbook.
I've tried running the set of Applescripts called "Maintenance" (available on the web) to do all regular maintenance tasks.
I've run software update. Everything is up to date.
Any suggestions of other things I should be checking to try to improve the speed of my Macbook Pro are much appreciated.
I find it really mystifying that performance is so noticeably worse on a brand new, much more powerful machine.
ThanksThanks for the replies.
In re the OS, I personally don't see many significant improvements in OS 10.5. Sure, little things here and there, but major power improvements over 10.4 that should cause startup time to be slower? I don't see it. I'm surprised in the design phase Apple's software engineers would allow longer startup time (always one of their biggest selling point over the Windows world) in return for such things as being able to hit the space bar in the finder to open a document quickly. I'm not using Time Machine, for instance, so that shouldn't be slowing down startup... or at least actually loading it in functioning mode shouldn't be slowing things down.
In re Safari, I'm doing as scientific a test as I possibly can here at home. Both computers sitting right next to each other, connected to the same network wirelessly, clicking on the same web link at exactly the same time. My 2006 Macbook is consistently faster at loading the page. Even more, it is significantly faster at loading the page to a "usable" point. For instance, if I click on the main page of the New York Times, the 2006 Macbook will load faster and will let me scroll down much earlier in the load process. On the 2009 MBP, the page shows up a few seconds slower, and it takes another few seconds more before the spinning beach ball stops and I can scroll down on the page. This is true both with Safari 3 and 4 on the MBP.
I just find it weird that a much more powerful computer, with a "new, improved" operating system and twice the amount of RAM, is noticeably more sluggish on these really basic tasks.
My next step is to go to the Apple store and try to compare mine to some other MBPs...
I have issues with some developments at Apple recently. For instance, the gen 2 iPod shuffle strikes me as a perfect design. Does it need to be smaller? Moving the controls to the headset seems really weird to me, much less convenient than the old one. I know that comment is OT, I just am starting to wonder about some decisions at Apple.
Not enough to make me complain seriously... I still vastly prefer Apple to the other options. But that sense I had for years that somebody really smart is paying attention to all these details and getting them right... that's starting to fade away for me. On the other hand, I do not have an iPhone and I think it's clear a lot of Apple's resources are going into the iPhone these days. -
Mountain Lion slower than paint drying
Ok. I need help.
I have a 2011 Macbook Pro i7 13" 2.7 currently using 10.8.3
I made the mistake of upgrading to 10.8.4. Took hours to start and had to go into recovery mode. Repaired disk - ok.
Still no go on startup
Restored from time machine back to a couple of days prior on 10.8.3
Great for about 30 minutes the slower than a country train in the artic.
it starts up in just under 15 minutes. while I go and make a coffee laden with caffiene
The biggest problem I am having is that the rainbow ball and I are now no longer speaking to each other.
It has taken over and for a small icon I don't think it deserves world domination.
This is worse than my first Mac a 1994 2vi.
Not to thrilled that my coffee intake has increased dramatically lately. I am now nearly 20 years older and my doctor has warned me about the caffeine.
Please help as this has taken three days off my life. I might as well start smoking again.Well good morning!
Downloads all gone, Firefox extensions removed, Safari closed, activity monitor is jogging away, so things are getting better.
Had already started in safe mode but now back on full startup.
Time machine whirring away.
However, apparently Disk Utility will no longer work and I quote:
"You can't use this version of the application "Disk Utility" with this version of OS X. You have "Disk Utility" 11.0 "
Not sure what that means.
Directory Utility crashes on start and wants me to force quit.
Oh and the Finder crashed.
Here is the crash report for the Finder (it's a biggie). If any one can advise on a solution, my mental health would be grateful.

MBP slower than ever...
I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, then swapped a 250gb 7200rpm hard drive for a 500gb 5400rpm hard drive. Now my computer is slower than ever. It still works, but at a much slower pace. Often the screen will freeze for up to 10 seconds before becoming operable again. This happens when doing the simplest of tasks. I am only running about 5 programs at a time anyways. This never happened on the old system. And I don't think its a matter of the slower hard drive. I was running an old MB with a smaller HD, same RPM, same RAM, and there was no problem. What gives? What should I do?
OK. Let's proceed on the premise it's not the drive. Although, I swapped an 80GB 5400 drive on an iMac G4 for a 160 GB@7200 and noticed quite a difference.
How did you install, clean install with Migration Assistant, clone, Time Machine?
There are some simple troubleshooting steps you can take.
Create a new User go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" (make it an admin acct) and test your apps in this new account, if they are faster the problem is isolated to your User and not systemwide.
If the issue is limited to your user account try starting up Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
If your apps functions faster that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving ~(yourHome)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting. Also, delete Users/yourname/Library/Caches. (on the first launch after this some apps will be slow until cache catches up.)
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
If the issue is systemwide then, you may be able to repair this with the The 10.6.2 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

Why is Thunderbolt so much slower than USB3?
I'm considering two different drives for Time Machine purposes. Both are LaCie. Either of these:
- Two Porsche 9233 drives, 4 TB each
OR
- A 2Big Thunderbolt drive, 8 TB, which I would configure as RAID 1 (a mirrored 4 TB volume)
My question is this: I've viewed both of these product pages via the Apple Store, and I noticed that LaCie's information for the Thunderbolt drive makes it a lot slower than the USB drives. Meaning: They say that the 2Big Thunderbolt drive maxes out at like 427 MB/s, whereas the Porsche USB drives max out at 5 GB/s. Why is this? Isn't Thunderbolt supposed to be a lot faster than USB (any iteration)? Not an easy question, short of a whole lot more detail on the construction of those two devices. You're likely going to need to look at the details of the drives and probably at some actual data. You're really looking for some real benchmark data that you can compare, in other words. Particularly which (likely Seagate) drives are used in those (IIRC, Seagate bought LaCie a while back), and what the specs are.
The hard disk drives themselves are a central factor, where the drive transfer rate is a key metric for big transfers (and that can be based on drive RPM as much as anything, faster drives can stream more data, but they tend to need more power and run hotter), and access (seek) time for lots of smaller transfers (faster seeks mean faster access, so good for lots of small files scattered around). Finding the details of the drives can be interesting, though. I've seen lots of cheaper disks that spin very slowly, which means that they can have nice-looking transfer times out of any cache, but then... you... wait... for... the... disk... to... spin.
The device bus interfaces can also vary (wildly) in quality. I've seen some decent ones, and I've seen some USB adapters that were absolute garbage. Some devices have decent quantities of cache, too. Others have dinky caches, and end up doing synchronous transfers to hard disks, and that's glacial compared with memory speeds.
One of your example configurations also features RAID 1 mirroring, which means that each write is hitting both disks. The writes have to pass through a controller that can do RAID 0 mirroring, and that can write the I/O requests to both drives, and that can read the data back from (if it's clever) whichever of the two drives is best positioned in related to the sectors you're after. If it's dumb, it won't account for the head positions and drive rotation and sector target. Hopefully the controller is smart enough to correctly deal with a disk failure; I've met a few RAID controllers that weren't as effective when disks had failed and the array was running in a degrated mode. In short, RAID 1 mirroring is a reliability-targeted configuration and not a performance configuration. It'll be slower. Lose a disk in RAID 1 mirroring, and you have a second disk with a second copy. If the controller works right.
If you want I/O performance without reliability, then configure for RAID 0 striping. With that configuration, you're reading data from both disks. But lose a disk in a RAID 0 striping configuration and you're dealing with data recovery, at best. If the failure is catastrophic, you've lost half your data.
But nobody's going to make this choice for you, and I'd be skeptical of any specs outside of actual benchmarks, and preferably benchmarks approximating your use. Reliability is another factor, and that's largely down to reputation in the market; how well the vendor supports the devices, should something go wrong. One of the few ways to sort-of compare that beyond the reviews is the relative length of the warranty, and what the warranty covers; vendors generally try to design and build their devices to last at least the length of the warranty.
Yeah. Lots of factors to consider. No good answers, either. Given it's a backup disk, I'd personally tend to favor eliability and warranty and less about brute speed.
Full disclosure: no experience with either of these two devices. I am working with Promise Pegasus Thunderbolt disk arrays configured RAID 6 on various Mac Mini configurations, and those support four parallel HD DTV video streams with no effort. The Pegasus boxes are plenty fast. They're also much more expensive than what you're looking at.
