Scrolling lag in MS Word 2004 under rosetta

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has any tips to speeding up scrolling in MS Office 2004 under rosetta on an intel mac. In particular, word seems to lag, sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes it does this each time I scroll with the scroll wheel. If I click the mouse while it is lagging, it seems to come back to life and scrolls again.
I understand that rosetta isn't going to give me native performance, but I don't seem to have this lag in other PPC programs. Will rosetta performance be improved in Leopard? I really can't wait for Office 2008 to be released, I use Word every day for my work and it will make a huge difference to me!

Hi,
I tried pulling out the margins all the way the the edge, but I'm still experiencing the problem. I also tried reducing the image size significantly with no success. Any suggestions?
I also tried deleting the image. With the image gone, the extra page goes, too. The page with the section break is still there but mysterious page #2 is gone. When I import the image again, though, I re-create the problem.
I just realized I didn't try the 'Use Printer metrics to layout document' that Paul suggested and might look into that.
Any other suggestions? I hesitate to do it because the document is somewhat elabourate, but I might try rebuilding the first few pages in a new document to see if I add the image first and then add the text if it will solve the problem.
One other question. When I reveal invisible formatting, it does show two paragraph marks in the footer. This is the same for all footers on every page in the entire document. Could that be causing the problem? If so, do you know if it is possible to delete only the footer on the first page?
One other clue: I used to have a graphic on the back page and now that I think of it, there was a blank page after it, too. It sure sounds like your tiling description...
Thanks again for your help.

  • Scrolling over images in Word is choppy & lags on Mac, but not Windows

I have a large Word document with about 10-15 images that is about 50 pages long. When I scroll through the document, it lags in an extremely annoying way past the images and graphs; it is very choppy and almost freezes the program. I'd be willing to send admins a video of my screen showing what is happening.
I have 8 GB of RAM, I have a mid-2014 model MacBook Pro, and have no other windows open, and my machine is able to use multiple Adobe programs without flinching. It's not my computer but it IS how my computer/word is handling the document.
I opened this exact same document on a windows computer and it works perfectly well. I am able to scroll as I would on any website, and the content of the document does not affect my scrolling speed or display. Again, this proves that it is the functionality of the mac/program.
Beyond this issue, this document has crashed my Word multiple times when saving. Many other have reported the saving issue and also this scrolling lag issue. This is extremely frustrating and I would really appreciate if someone could let me know what the issue is and how to solve it.
I have tried the following fixes:
    - Reinstalling Word
    - Turning off transparency and increasing contrast
    - Opened document with friend's Mac - issue persisted on their Mac as well.
    - Copied information in a new document and saved it. Same problem persisted

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database

  • Running Word 2004 in program under OS 10.8

MS Word 2004 for Mac works fine under OS 10.6 but not under 10.8.  Is there any software than runs on 10.8 that will run MS Word 2004 for Mac?
    Thank you.

    zscipio --
OpenOffice opens all Word docs, and when you done editing, it saves as either OpenOffice or Word.  It's perfect. And it's free.  Search for OpenOffice.  I have both Office and OpenOffice, and I prefer the OO.  It's easier, takes up less memory, and much more Mac friendly.

  • MS Word 2004 freezes up under Snow Leopard

Use Office 2004 extensively, recently upgraded to Snow Leopard on iMac. Entourage seems fine, Excel has frozen up only once, but Word is freezing up regularly. First time it froze I let it alone for about 10 minutes and it found itself; today I tried that again but no change after 30 minutes. Currently using Pages and/or using RemoteDesktop to Win XP & Office 2003 to get my work done.
Need help... I want to work on Mac using MS-Word 2004.

Rosetta is installed and the other Office 2004 are running to an expectable level.
iWork is my preferred software and I use it whenever I'm working on something for me or I just need a finished product. However, a lot of my work is done in a collaborative manner and I need to work in MS-Office in order to guarantee seamless collaboration; (iWork is WYSIWUG and Office is WYSIAWUG ...what you see is 'almost' what you get...).
...So back to my problem with Word 2004....

  • 15" MBPr scroll lag: What are you experiences servicing this under AppleCare?

I'm one of the many suffering from the dreaded and well documented scroll lag. Have tried literally everything to fix this on my own, but have had no success. Using a tool like QuickRes to force non-HiDPI has helped; I've been using this band aid solution for well over a year now..
I have a 3 year AppleCare warranty.. What are your experiences with trying to get this serviced? I can't see this being a hardware issue, but then again, it very well could be. It doesn't look like any 13" MBPr's suffer from the same issues? I know it isn't typical for Apple to give out full replacements.. There's been users that have reportedly had up to 9 repairs / replacements, and this doesn't sound like something I'd want to go through.. Countless hours over the phone, at the Genius Bar, the wait times for repairs..
Is this issue directly related to the problems with the LG / Samsung displays? I can confirm I have a Samsung.

Ask for a new unit or a refund. Go for the fourth time or even the fifth. Its an expensive machine bought with hard earned money.

  • New MBP, and am having memory trouble errors with MS Word 2004

    Hi,
I know this has been talked about before, but I'm not sure where to post this question. I have a new MBP, with a full version of Word (no previous trial software installed). I have been trying to copy and past basic text files from Yahoo mail, to create a book of emails of sorts. My file size has been approaching my memory capacity (basic setup). Does it not create a swap file and let you keep going if you approach the limits of the onboard memory? I understand it will run a bit slower, but I'm only moving text files and nothing else. Why the proverbial memory/disk full error messages? Does it have anything to do with the software being non universal code?
Do I need to get rid of temporary files, as Im copying and pasting alot? If so, how?
Anyone have the same trouble, and have a clear solution? I could also swear my MPB is running alot slower with Word than I would have expected.
Any help you can give me would b appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave

I’ll try to answer your questions briefly without going into too much detail. First of all, I think the error message you are seeing is generated by MS Word and not your operating system. That particular error, and other similar ones, are quite common in Word in particular situations and are the result of a known bug.
As far as I know, there is no fix, but there are several work-arounds. The bug has to do with the number of temporary files that get created when working with large Word files. As you might guess, the larger your file, the larger the temp files, and they will quickly fill up your existing RAM, which then causes the error that generates the message. You have to delete the temp files---you can do that by saving and closing your file, then restart it. There are some scripts you can run, but that is beyond what I want to get into here (and usually is not necessary).
The other problem is that by copying and pasting text from Yahoo Mail, you are not pasting simple text---you are pasting all the HTML code, formatting, and everything else that is contained in that text. And Word saves it all, then adds its own formatting and other code---leading to corrupt files sooner or later.
And then, to make it all worse, if your file is as large as you say it is (close to system memory in size), that is one huge Word file, and Word does not handle really large files very well, especially Word 2004, but all versions of Word, Windows versions included, have trouble with large files.
Word does in fact run slowly on even the newest MacBook Pros because Word is not yet compiled for the Intel Macs and does not run natively as a universal binary but runs under Rosetta, which translates Word to run on Apple computers running Intel CPUs. If you are working with small files, it isn’t too bad, but big files will slow it down to almost a crawl at times, or it will even stop responding for several seconds between each command.
You can work around these problems by breaking your file into much smaller ones, save often (and close the file once in while), and save as a text file, rather than as a doc file.
An alternative is to use another word processor or text editor to save your copied text---there are many that will work as well as or better than Word for what you want to do. Pages is a good alternative----I have to collaborate on Word files every day, and I prefer to work on my MacBook Pro (although I also use Windows-based computers about as frequently, too), and except for the most complex Word files with tables, charts, and pictures, Pages works very well, and you can save the file as a Word document, too, if you need to.
Hope that answers some of your questions----and always remember….I could be wrong.

  • In Word 2004 I can not save documents or quit. One suggestion is the recent security update. Any suggestins on how to fix?

In Word 2004 I can not save documents or quit. One suggestion is the recent security update. Any suggestins on how to fix?

Security Update 2012-001 Bricks Rosetta programs
I've outlined the restore proceedure here, it covers a lot of bases and explains what is going to occur so please don't be intimidated it's a LOT easier that it appears.
Take your time and comprehend the steps involved and you'll be backup up like before in short order.
    Restore method.
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
If you get a gray screen or some other hangup upon booting, try holding the Shift key down while booting to enter Safe Mode.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
#2 Try Restoring from a TimeMachine or hold option bootable clone
If you have TimeMachine drive, or a hold the option key bootable clone use that to erase and restore from before the Security Update occured.
Obviously if you didn't make a recent backup before the update, your going to have to skip to Step #3.
Note: A TM restore can take a awfully long time, a clone restore takes under 2 hours in most cases.
If you don't know how to restore from TM drive
    http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html
    #3 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
If no recent TM or bootable clone then:
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk and Permissions of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
Note: If Disk Uitlity can't repair the drive, then come back to seek further assistance and make sure you have a copy of your data off the machine.
#4 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#5 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
Note: For most users likley Step #3 and #4 is likley all that is needed to be done.
    That's it really.

    Unverified hacks
Note: You may see a "hack" for this issue floating around, it has had mixed results as people's software is different.
You may want to try it, but it's at your own risk. It has worked fast for some and not at all for others, hopefully over time it will work for all.
The above methods I outline are Apple approved restore methods + based upon experience here and not a quick fix, but are sure to work as Apple recommends such steps themselves.
If at any time you feel this is beyond your capability, please seek local Mac/PC professional assistance before you lose your data.
In fact my steps above are very simple, you might want to have a family member or friend perfrom the proceedure in about a hour or two.
If you don't have any backup, please maintain at least a TM drive, just hook up a new blank external drive and TM will ask you to make a backup, takes some time so let it work.
If your a bit more skilled, a option bootable clone is much superior than TM drive.
    Good Luck

  • Microsoft Office:Mac 2004 under Yosemite

I know it's very (very) old, but I've been happily running Microsoft Office:Mac 2004 under Snow Leopard and am finally in a position to upgrade to Yosemite. I've found workarounds for all my other important legacy software but was wondering if it's even remotely possible to run Word:Mac 2004 and Excel:Mac 2004 under the new OS?

Office 2004 and Other Applications Don't Work
If you have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite, it will not work post-Snow Leopard. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion/Mountain Lion.
These two suites are similar to Libre Office:
    NeoOffice - $30.00
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
As for other software, any PPC-based software will not run in Lion or Mountain Lion because Rosetta is no longer part of OS X. You will need to upgrade to Intel versions of the software.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)

  • Microsoft Word 2004 hogging CPU

    Hi,
I have a mid july '07 macbook and have office 2004 installed. I am writing my thesis and constantly using word 2004 and endnote with it (no other apps are open). I noticed that word constantly hogs the CPU, mostly 100%, and the fan starts till it reaches 6000+rpm. After 1-2 minutes it stops and again, after some usage of word and endnote, it starts again. This didn't occur when I was using my ibook G4. Also, I'm sure it has nothing to do with endnote, as I tried quitting it and just using word, the problem didn't go away. Did some search on the microsoft support page and found this: http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.mac.office.word/browse_thread/th read/1180629da68a21fc/c75157fd0ac813b1?lnk=gst&q=cpu+hog&rnum=1#c75157fd0ac813b1. Seems like others had this problem of word hogging the CPU. Probably due to the use of rosettta technology. Just wondering do any of you guys have this problem when using word 2004? Any ways around this? Thanks.

    BernardWong wrote:

That is because it did not have to run under Rosetta. Only thing I could recommend is use either NeoOffice or Open Office instead of Word. You might want to consider upgrading to Microsoft Word 2008 if they ever come out with it.

  • Weird save problem Word 2004 using OS X 10.4.x

We have major problems saving Word documents using Mac OS X 10.4.x on a server volume. What really makes it odd is that the problem only occurs in the afternoon. The problem has only been reported by users trying to save using Microsoft Word 2004.
When the problems occurs it is not possible to save or save as on the server volume - Can not find volume. The volume is available on the desktop. Saving the file on the desktop works fine.
Mac OS X 10.4.2/10.4.3/10.4.4 with all updates installed.
Microsoft Office 2004 Swedish with SP2 installed.
It is a Windows Server 2003 with MacShare IP 9 installed. We've had the problem for some time and have replaced the server during that time, the save problem still remains though. It makes no difference with or without MacShare IP installed.
Anyone have any ideas how to solve this one?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
When dealing with Windows environments, I find it best to save the files as archives before sending them over to Windows environments. The file naming conventions differing by operating system, and the formats of what get sent sometimes can get corrupted when moving from system to system. This I found especially true when saving to a PC formatted flash drive. To make a file an archive, save it on the Mac first, and the control mouse click the document in 10.3 or 10.4. The contextual menu brings up a create archive. It has been my understanding than 10.4's archive format is more compatible with Winzip and 10.3 more compatible with GnuZip, both of which you can find clients for under Windows. Both 10.3 and 10.4 have the ability to open these documents directly when saved as this format.

  • MS Word 2004 print/save as pdf - mysterious blank page

    Hi,
I'm using Microsoft Word 2004 with OS 10.4.6. When I use the Save as pdf feature under the Print dialog, I keep getting blank pages in the pdf that don't appear in the Word Doc itself.
The Word document contains 30 pages. The first page is a jpeg graphic. I managed to get it to print fine the other day, but after my wife fixed a few spelling errors, I got a blank page as the second page in the pdf. Strangely enough, there is no blank page there in Word. I turned on invisible characters in Word and couldn't find any stray characters. The first page is a jpeg graphic that takes up 75% of the page.
All of the pages are formatted the same, portrait 8 1/2 x 11 with standard margins. Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and Word 2004

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I have found that when I try to Insert Picture into a Word document (Word 2004), the Media browser for Photo no longer works. I can find pictures elsewhere on the disk. I assume Word is not connecting through to the iPhoto (08) database.
I also have OpenOffice and tried in other (non-MS Office 2004) apps - this works with no problem.
    Anyone seen or solved this?
    Thx

Thanks Stuart, I did upgrade Office 2004 to the latest patches and still have the problem.
Don't really want to spend on upgrading to Office 2008 - cost and I hear some functions are lost (macros).
I searched the internet and I didn't actually find anyone stating that Office 2004 had any issues apart from being slow 'cos of Rosetta, but I don't see any reason why the OSX media browser that Word invokes fails. To me that sounds as if it could be a failing of the OSX media browser (Snow Leopard supports backward compatibility with Rosetta, but not the media browser?).

Regarding your suggestion to try the free LibreOffice, at the moment I don't need this, because I have downloaded a one-month trial Japanese Microsoft Office 2011 and can open my current files with that, although I do not want to revise any of my files until either this problem is solved, or I purchase a new MS Office.
Unfortunately there is not many MS Office software in English available here in Japan.  I spoke to Microsoft Japan and even though they sell software, they do not sell any English verions of MS Office.  Incredible, considering that the company itself is located in the US.  They suggested I buy it from Amazon Japan, however Amazon do not have any available at this time and do not know if they will in the future.
Anyway, I have found a company which sells the downloaded English version (no disk).  The software is Microsoft Office for Mac Home and Student 2011.  I have not purchased it yet.  It would take too long and the postage charges would be too high to purchase it from the US.
Hoping you have some good ideas.
    Best regards,
    Susan

  • Major Scrolling Lag!

    Dear All,
I have been suffering from this major scrolling lag on my mid 2012 macbook air 13.
The lag is not only persistant to chrome or safari but also exists while scrolling between desktops, in the launchpad, in preview, word, system preferences....its omni-present.
I started facing this problem since 4 days back, almost a month after installing mavericks. I have never faced such an issue while using mountain lion.
I'm posting the results of Etre-Check for your reference:

I'd really appreciate some help with this issue.

    Huge advantage for $170 more
    why?
    802ac wifi.
Haswell cool processing and long battery life.
    Much more lightweight.
    Faster SSD
Absolutely yes its worth the $170
The 802ac wifi alone is worth it, it will run circles around everything else in wireless speeds.

  • Word 2004 and snow leopard

Hi, new poster here.  TIA for any advice, info.
I am being dragged into the 2010's and find I must upgrade  from Leopard to Snow Leopard or Lion.  I have a 40,000+ word document created in Word 2004.  I will be very upset if I cannot access it after upgrading.  I understand Lion and Mountain Lion do not support Word 2004.   I believe Snow leopard does though it may be a bit slow.
If I upgrade to Word 2008 or 2011 will either or both open my 2004 document while running in Snow leopard?  Will the document be automatically converted to 2008 or 2011 format and thus be OK with Lion/Mt. Lion or would I have to copy/paste or move it somehow into the new program?
    Thanks

Word 2004 will run under Snow Leopard, and I never found it to be particularly slow, But either Word 2008 or Word 2011 should be able to open your 2004 documents with no problems. Either version will continue to save in the older Word .doc format unless you explictly save it in the newer .docx format.
Microsoft offers a 30-day trial version of 2011 if you want to test it for yourself:
    https://www.microsoft.com/mac/trial
It'll run on any Intel-based Mac with Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later.
    Regards.
