Scrolling recordsets for oracle 8.1.5

Hi,
Am working on a Jsp application which is in fact a forum application just like
the one on which i am posting this question.
Am using Jdbc thin connection But I find that it doesnot support scrolling recordsets at all , i can use only rs.next() and not rs.first() or rs.absolute()
which i require for paging
The database I am using is Oracle *i 8.1.5 and the drivers are bundled in classes111.zip .
Now is there a way i can do acheive this somehow.

rdbms 815 went out of support on dec. 31, 2000.
you need to move to a currently supported version (i.e 816 or 817(recommended)).
once a product goes out of support, patches are no longer created for it ..

it gives me an error
“[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] The specified DSN contains an architecture mismatch between the Driver and Application”
So i am assuming that i need to install the 32 bit ODBC drivers for Oracle as well in addition to the already installed 64 bit drivers ..
Any thoughts on this ?

64 bit apps need 64 bit Oracle client software.
32 bit apps need 32 bit Oracle client software.
You should be able to tell the bit-ness of the app by checking the Process tab in task manager to see if it has *32 next to it.
You can install both 32 bit and 64 bit Oracle client software on the same box, but you need to do it into different homes, and different oracle_base should also be used.
There isnt an Oracle client install bundle that installs both, you'll need to do each separately.

Result Sets with the Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle

Howdy all.
I have an Oracle database that I have migrated from MSSQL2K. My front end is mostly VB, and I have many (hundreds) DLL's that use ADO to access the database and execute stored procedures in the database. I cannot seem to get result sets from the Oracle procedures. I have tried passing a SYS_REFCURSOR as an IN OUT parameter, and I have tried returning a SYS_REFCURSOR in a function. The Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle does not seem to handle the ref cursors. If I use the Oracle ODBC driver, then ref cursors are handled sort of magically. Just like the result sets are in MSSQL with the SQL Server ODBC Driver.
The question that I would like to pose to anybody willing to answer is this: Is there any way to use the Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle without changing the way I do the database access (using ADO connection/command/recordset objects)? I need the same DLL's to work on top of both MSSQL and Oracle.
I know that what I want to do is possible using the Oracle ODBC driver, but this will take some major changes to some of my DB components. I am trying to stay away from this, but it looks like I am going to have to go that route - that is unless somebody wows me with a good answer to this post.

As you are using Microsoft driver which works in XP and does not on Win 2003 you should post this on microsoft forum.

Repository for Oracle RDBMS installation ports (Oracle 12c)

Is there a repository for Oracle 12c where to find the configured ports after installation and above all after any change(s) in configuration?
I think about: listener, OEM, EPG,... ports.

OS Details: OEL 5.9 64 bit.
The portlist.ini is only interesting just after installation, and there not always an entry.
For instance, after I have done my installation (with listener, OEM), I still have an "empty file".
From the documentation:
"If you change a port number, it is not updated in the portlist.ini file, so you can only rely on this file immediately after installation"
"To find or change a port number, use the methods described in this appendix".
This is Appendix F. I scrolled it down, and don't find where to change and view the actual ports.
It seems to me there is no way to:
- See clearly the values of the ports used and for what component.
- Modify these ports and how.
Mayve I miss something, does someone understand it better?

Dynamic Recordset with Oracle ODBC

I'm trying to create a recordset that will automaticaly update
itself when the database has changed. I have tried using a
dynamic cursor but it doesnt work. The cursor type keeps on
getting set to a keyset cursor type. Does Oracle support
dynamic cursors? If so, can someone post an example.

No ODBC driver for Oracle supports the creation of dynamic resordsets. I'm not aware of a driver for any database that does.

Unsure what is meant by "connected mode". You need to connect to Oracle to change data in Oracle. There is no other way.
Whether that connection is made by a web application server, command line SQL*Plus, a tool like TOAD, or a client written in Delphi/Visual Basic... a connection must be made.

"Good Logic". Reason: often database rows are cached by the client. The client makes changes to its cached rows. The same thing happens at another client. That user too changes the cached rows. Both users now inform their client applications to "flush" (write/sync) these changed rows to the database. But now there is a conflict as both users have changed the same rows. There can only be one winner. Which means one of the user's changes will be written to the database, overwriting the changes made by the other user. This is called lost updates - and is a result of not locking rows in the database when planning to change those rows.
Scrollable cursors depends on caching of data - which is not always a good idea. There is read consistency to consider, and the resources required for maintaining this scrollable cursor's results.

Why not? This should be the standard consideration in client-server design. Stored procedures are used in the database to provide an abstraction layer - hiding the complexities of SQL (and different flavours of the language) from the client, hiding the complexities of the physical db design, etc.
It also reduces the network bandwidth (stored proc calls are up to 80% smaller than SQL calls). Changes in this database does not impact the client. Database SQL tuning can be performed without having to touch and recompile a single character of client source code.
Stored procs are essentially use to create an Application Programming Interface (API) for the client. The client can then implement these API calls (to stored procs) as classes.
This approach is true for Oracle as it is for SQL-Server. And has been the preferred approach for client-server design since the early 90's.

I have noticed with read only user is that TEST button in EM Console is active means user with read only user can create a trans, in Prod scenario it is a risk.
Raised a CR with Oracle and found that it is a bug
Bug 14082464 - CANNOT DISABLE TEST/TEST WEB SERVICE BUTTON IN SOA EM COSOLE is there in Metalink.
So my question is there any way by which i can disable the TEST button in EM Conasole.
I think there are some WLST script or servlet java class available to resolve this issue.
Can any one confirm this and please suggest if any one aware of any alternative method.

Error BACKINT for Oracle Connection

hi @ maxdb gurus...
i have a problem backing up my maxdb 7.6.0.033 (serving for a mysap.erp2005 on aix 5.3) using the backint mechanism.
-> backup media created: two pipes and one parallel medium containing these pipes
-> bsi.env has been created
-> backint4sapdb.sar contains
   4 staging areas each with 4096 MB
   files per backint call 2
-> maxdb is about 57 gb perm. data area (and 6 gb temp.)
i use the backup wizard (dbmgui) to invoke a complete data backup which starts (pipes are created in the file system) and runs until approx. 4 gb...then the backup terminates with error "-24920 backup operation was unsuccesful. The database request failed with error -8020"
what might be the problem? are the staging areas too small? is says that when using only one stage area it must hold the complete database...can i then conclude that 4 staging areas must hold the database as well - meaning they must be around 15 gb each?

yup...but that also means that the sum of the staging areas need as much space as the database ie. around 70 gigs netto! the staging files will be filled and thus grow until the defined size, meaning that the file system(s) need to be big enough!
everything works fine until the stage files are filled (up to the defined size) and then stops...when i change the sizes of the staging areas i can reproduce the error!
i compared the tsm implementation of that system with another system (live cache...kind of small regarding db size...) and found nothing serious...

As per my requirement, I am displaying several records in a Screen in a Tabular Format. But here I have to show 21 Columns in that table which is too high. I am able to display it but due to it I am getting a Horizontal scroll bar for the whole screen since all the columns are not getting displayed in the normal window screen space. But its looking too odd since once I am scrolling it to right the columns are getting displayed but the above Header Bar and Global buttons are not displaying, they are bound to the normal screen space.
Is there a way to have a Horizontal scroll bar only for that table instead of the entire screen so that on scrolling that bar only the table rows will beshifted ant got displayed?

try this approach.
include a raw text item before and table item.
include the appropriate HTML tags in raw text item to enable horizontal scroll

Can some one please tell me …. How to calculate required Memory and No. of Processors for Oracle EBS R11 and R12.
For example we have 50 Concurrent users and 100 named (i.e. the users which are doing only Data entry.), so how to How to calculate required Memory and No. of Processors
Please guide me on the same.

Using a SQL for Oracle in Microsoft Excel Query

I am having the most difficult time (in fact, I can't get it to work) trying to use an SQL I created in Toad for Oracle. It works fine in Toad for Oracle...gives me all the data I need. I am trying to use it in Excel for users that don't know SQL or Oracle so they can use the query to extract data they need for Charts, Graphs, etc.

Note: I also tried creating this query in Microsoft Query (the simple way) and when I first create it...it works...But then if I go back in to edit the query, and refresh the query or try to Return data to Excel, it gives me a ORA-00936 error message.
Why it works when I first create the query in Excel, I don't know. But I have to validate the queries I'm creating (SQL or not) and I can't validate it if every time I go into edit the query (which may have to happen; that's why I have to fix this before I can submit my validation).
Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, I know I'm replying to my own threads here...but I want to add a little bit more information again.
I was successful in figuring out that changing the :criteria to a ? worked.
I tested this on 1 criteria at a time. Adding one more scenario ? at at time.
It only worked up until about 3 scenarios of each criteria.
Then when I refreshed the query in Microsoft Excel Query, I got an "out of memory" error, and then it ended up just erasing the SQL I had been using.
Here's the SQL I had where it gave me this error. Am I possibly just making Excel work too hard? It just doesn't make sense because Toad for Oracle handled it in like 4 seconds. Which brings me back to an intial question I had. Can Excel use Toad for Oracle somehow?

DBAShell - New Open Source Project for Oracle DBA's

I've been an Oracle DBA for quite some time (since 7.0.13) and a developer for many years. One of the things I've always wished for was an easier way to set up environment variables for different Oracle Homes and a way to provide passwords to scripts without embedding them in plain-view.
About 3 years ago, I started a set of functions and scripts at my company that did exactly just that and provided many more functions for things like checking database status, running scripts quietly unless errors are detected, running actions in parallel (like fast shutdowns at once, or multiple analyzes), restarting databases in a guaranteed fashion, aliases to common folder locations, etc..
About a month ago, after putting all this time and effort into these scripts and using them in production all this time, I realized I wanted more out of the scripts like support for other databases and thought that it would be best if I gave it new life as an Open Source project.
So that is how http://sourceforge.net/projects/dbashell/ was started. Now its in a second release (DBAShell 0.85) that is more modular and would allow other people to easily add support for other OSs, other Shells, and other Databases.
Here is a description of the project from the latest news item:
DBAShell is a project based around Shell functions and scripts designed to make it easy for DBA's to use Databases in a command line environment. Currently supported is Oracle with ksh and bash on AIX, Solaris, Linux. The code base itself is 3 years old and has been in use in Production environments all of that time.
Features include:
* Automatic setting of all environment variables based on SID requested.
* Manage PATH's and other path like variables for each ORACLE_HOME needed.
* Run scripts with stored passwords (no more hard-coding of passwords!!)
* Automatically set SID based on Script location (makes it easier to share scripts between SID's)
* manage temporary script output and check for oracle errors in output
* check database status and versions from scripts
* stop/start databases in parallel (faster startup)
* compile all database objects
* analyze objects in parallel (Faster analyzes)
