Scrolling through videos freezes Front Row

I have many home videos in iTunes and thus Front Row. When scrolling up and down the list of videos in Front Row, I see the thumbnail sized videos begin to run. Eventually Front Row freezes when scrolling up/down through the list. Remote doesn't respond, keyboard and mouse do not respond and ultimately I have to either remotely logon and kill FrontRow.app or reboot. I know that all of these videos are playable without error using the QT player and in iTunes so the files are OK and furthermore are playable in the thumbnails again the next time in FrontRow.
Anyone see this problem and know how to fix or work around? Thanks in advance.
BTW, these videos are full sized H.264 videos converted from DVDs I had previously made with a miniDV camcorder. I've played iPod sized versions of these videos in Front Row with no problem except that now I am using an HDTV and the iPod sized versions are no longer good enough.

I agree, but the problem only occured while scrolling. I was able to play each of the videos beginning to end. The problem was reproducable over a short time but not with any particular set of videos. In any case, the problem did go away as I am able to scroll up/down through all the videos with no problem. There's also been a few firmware updates, OS updates, and quicktime updates. Any of these could have fixed the problem. I'm happy to have my 'media center' Mac back in action.

  • Shuffle music videos using front row

Hello, I just can´t figure it out, can I shuffle music videos using front row?
MAc mini   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I don't think anyone's figured out how to do that. Music and music playlists from iTunes are played through iTunes. However, even if your video is inside iTunes the video is played through Front Row using the QuickTime Player application, not iTunes. Since the QuickTime Player application is not reading playlists from iTunes and has no "shuffle" option of its own, I don't think it can be done. If you do make a playlist in iTunes that has videos on it, all you get is the audio and a black screen when they're played with iTunes.
I would suggest you send Apple some Mac OS X feedback and let them know you'd like to see an option like this.

  • Hide Music Videos from Front Row?

I have a lot of music videos in my iTunes library, but because Front Row lumps these into the "Movies" category it is very difficult to choose movies. I want to make the interface easier for my kids, but beyond deleting the music videos I have not found a simple solution.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • Problems playing certain videos in Front Row

I just got my new iMac G5 the other day, so this has been my first week experimenting with Front Row, which I ADORE by the way. On to my issue, though...
I have many tv shows in iTunes -- Law & Order, King of Queens, South Park, and Family Guy, mostly. Whenever I open up Front Row to play a video, the only selections I can choose from are Law & Order and Comedy Central Standup (the Comedy Central one is the only one I've purchased through iTunes -- all of the other ones have been ripped from my personal collection). Anyway, all of them are set as "tv shows" in iTunes... and yet only those two show up. Any idea what's going on? I'd like to be able to access ALL of my videos.
    Thank you!

Are they showing up under Movies or just not at all?
If they are in the Movies (or any other FR Menu) it could be due to how the person who posted them for download compressed / handled them - you can try this on one to see if it makes it show up in TV
    http://members.verizon.net/pucklock/vIDInfiltr8/vIDI.html
If they are not there at all, it could be that although they play in Quicktime or iTunes that there is something in the original conversion causing a problem. I ran into that with a couple that I didn't do the actual compression on, and running them through iSquint using optimize for iPod and h.264 settings they then showed up under my movies menu in Front Row

  • Why is my cursor not scrolling through video footage?

I used to be able to move the cursor through the time line and the video playhead would play with it, I accidently hit a bunch of keyboard keys and now its not playing that way, I can only click at specific points in the time line to get the playhead to go there. Anyway to get this action going again?

First: (Assuming you closed-out, re-booted, and re-started FCPX) make sure "skimming" is turned on.
If that doesn't do it, then...
Trash your preferences. (Harmless.) Easiest way to do that is to get this tried and true (and free) app:
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
It will also let you store your preferences for easy recall should you have to "trash" again.
    Hope this helps!

  • ITunes 7.4 will not stream video through front row

I just updated both my macbook pro and my mac mini to iTunes 7.4.1(2). I also updated the firmware for my airport extreme base station. I can no longer stream video using front-row. This happened before when I updated to iTunes 7.2! I suspect, like before, apple will have to send out a patch. Anyone else expierenced this?

Try turning IPv6 ON in your network preferences - this is helping SOME people with this problem. It won't help you at all if your network router doesn't do IPv6.
To turn on: go to Network Preferences, select the interface you use, under teh TCP/IP tab click 'Configure IPv6', and choose 'Automatic'. Save changes.

  • IPod and Front Row refuse additons to "TV Shows" Videos Category

I am having a problem where videos that I add to the "TV Shows" category of videos in iTunes refuse to upload to the same category on my iPod or in Front Row. When I add videos to iTunes (properly encoded for playback in iTunes, Front Row and on the Fifth Generation iPod) they automatically go into "Movies". If it's a music video, I'll go into "Get Info" for the file and change the "Video Kind" to "Music Video" and it will change to be in the "Music Video" category of videos in iTunes. Then, in Front Row and on the iPod, it will show up under "Music Videos" also. However, if I change "Video Kind" to "TV Shows" for a file I want to be in the "TV Shows" Category, it will move into that category in iTunes, but not in Front Row or on my iPod. It will move out of "Movies" on the iPod, but the only place it will show up on the iPod is under Video Playlists > Recently Added. Anyone else have this problem? It seems weird that I can add videos to "Movies" and "Music Videos" in Front Row and on the iPod, but not "TV Shows". If I want a video that is a tv show to show up on the iPod or in Front Row (other than the "Recently Added" playlist), I can only add it to "Movies".

    I know I don't have one.
But its the mechanism that is the same - its the stik atom that controls it. Apple/iTunes doesn't let you SET that piece of information. Yes, you can take any video file and in iTunes set it to "TV Show", but delete the file from iTunes and re-add it. Is it still a "TV Show"? No, because that information is only set in the iTunes database that other applications use - like FrontRow.
The stik atom controls whether iTunes sees it in the first place as a "TV Show". The principle should be the same on the iPod. Using AtomicParsley, the actual data that Apple embeds in its iTMS video files can be seen - its called metadata. For example, in my free episode of Monk, the word "Monk" only appears a few places in the file. And with the exception of 1 place where it has to be happenstance in the actual video stream where its "MoNk", it only appears in the metadata.
iTunes doesn't let you set lots of information - can you set "Album Artist"? No, because Apple doesn't provide for it. How about description? Well, yes, but only through Applescript. For the new TV show stuff - the only current way is through the use of AtomicParsley. There is also a hack for the iPod called mrtvpod if you want to try that.

  • Front Row not marking video as watched properly

I kept hoping that this issue would be resolved with one of the point releases, but here we are at 10.6.3 and it's still the same for me, so here's the problem.
Before installing 10.6 I was running 10.5.8 and when using Front Row to watch a video (say a TV show I downloaded on iTunes) I'd watch it all the way to the end and the status circle next to it would show that it's been watched. iTunes would report the same status.
Since installing 10.6 when I watch a video in Front Row all the way, the status shows up as if it's only partially watched instead of completely watched. I'm sure the video was over since I let it play all the way through until it comes back to Front Row.
This is very annoying. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there some way to fix it? If not, I hope Apple can address this in 10.6.4.

    Bump.
I have tried multiple solutions and non have solved this issue. I am rather disappointed that watching content on my AppleTV or via FrontRow does not mark the show as "watched" in iTunes. FrontRow will mark it part watched and AppleTV does not effect the watched status flag at all.
I do believe this is an iTunes 10 issue though as I only saw it after upgrading to iTunes 10.
Can anyone point me to a solution?

  • Front Row Crashing when Trying tpo play video

I just picked up m new iMac 20" and have been trying to play my videos on Front row.
I have tried every category - they are all authorized - but still, before even a second of video play s - Frontrow crashes. Please help!

There are several steps. Note that this is invading your main System folder which can be dangerous. You should have a complete backup of all your files before poking around like this!
    1. Delete Front Row (and Front Row only) from this path by dragging it to the Trash:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app
    Then empty your Trash.
    2. Delete the records that indicate Front Row has already been installed by deleting the receipts. If you've installed the 1.3 update, there will be two files to delete in this path:
    /Library/Receipts/FrontRow.pkg
    /Library/Receipts/FrontRowUpdate1.3.pkg
Drag both of those files to the Trash and empty it.
    3. Put in your Mac OS X install DVD (you don't have to boot from it) and run the "Install Bundled Software Only" installer. At the "Install Type" window, there should be a "customize" button. Click on that and uncheck every other option besides Front Row. The continue and finish installing Front Row only.
    4. Run the Software Update and your computer should recognize you need the Front Row 1.3 update. Install the update. Now might be a good time to restart.
That should completely replace Front Row and update it to the current version (which is needed if you're using the up-to-date version of iTunes and QuickTime).

  • Front row cannot play video on my shared network? not recognized? HELP!

When i launch my front row on my macbook it informs me that there are no videos being shared on my mini. But when i review the mini inside itunes i clearly see all the content and can play it. Any ideas why itunes and front row would not work together? It worked fine in the past, but the last two upgrades knocked it out. Both units are fully updated.

That is strange, it sounds like it should be working. I might try to create a new user with the Accounts System Preferences on the MacBook, log out and log in as the new user. Can the new user find the shared videos in Front Row? If not, then you have some kind of system-wide problem. If they can find the shared videos, then your original user has a preference or configuration issue.

  • Front row in Lion 10.7 issue (-70012) and video_ts not playing issue -solved

    Hi all,
thought I just post my solution to the front row issues in 10.7. I looked for a solution for days, and when I found it, I thought it would make other peoples live easier if I combine everything in one post.
I actually had a couple of issues:
    PROBLEM:
first front row stopped playing VIDEO_TS files in 10.6.
the second issue occurred when I thought upgrading to 10.7 would solve the issue; Front row still couldn't play the VIDEO_TS, because FRONT ROW was gone...
    SYMPTOMS:
both issues always showed the same symptoms:
when a dvd-back folder was selected, front row would show a black screen, and then, caused by my frantic pushing the ESC button, front row would give me the dvd player not valid -70012 error.
    CAUSE:
so what happened? I chose to buy my MBP 17" with the smallest HDD (yep sorry, was cheap-s-ing). Then later that year, I decided to buy the HDD caddy and switch my internal superdrive for a SSD. I ended up placing the original HDD in the hdd caddy, which I then put in the Superdrive's slot, and I placed the SSD in the slot where the original HDD was residing first. I now had a MBP 17" late 2011, with vertex3 SSD. I forgot, I also put in 16 GB, replacing the 8 GB.
So, when I back-upped all my favorite DVDs as VIDEO_TS files, (no I did not download dvds through usenet), grabbed the popcorn, and started Front Row, the disappointment began. No VIDEO_TS file would play, always the same -70012 error message. So after a lot of internet research I stumbled upon a guy who said: yeah, you have to upgrade to 10.7. After the upgrade my FRONT ROW was gone.
    SOLUTIONS:
    In 10.6:
As Apple's DVD player is always looking for the internal dvd player as a prerequisite to start, Front Row, which uses Apple's DVD player as video player, will throw up the -70012 error. 'Cause it finds the HDD in the HDD Caddy instead of the SuperDrive. So in 10.6 (and in 10.7 also) you can use the following solution:
(I got this solution partial from http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20070591-263.html)
1: modify the DVDPlayback framework that the DVD Player uses so that it will recognize external drive as a valid DVD playback device. (The HDD Caddy came with an external casing for the SuperDrive)
    2: download a hex editor (I used Hexedit 220 from http://hexedit.sourceforge.net/ )
3: Go to the folder /System/Library/Frameworks/ and back up the file "DVDPlayback.framework."
4: Open Hexedit_220 and use it to open the following file:/System/Library/Frameworks/DVDPlayback.framework/Versions/A/DVDPlayback.
5: Using the editor's find&replace through COMMAND-F, replace "Internal" with the text "External" and save the file. Note that Hexedit also saves a backup automatically.
6: Close the file once saved, and then run a permissions fix on the boot drive using Disk Utility. Then restart the system and you should now be able to play DVDs off the external drive using DVD Player. That is, If you use an external dvd player (which I don't use).
7: I inserted a very small USB stick in the MBP with no data on it, and Front Row and Apple DVD Player accepted this. I could now play my backupped DVDs.
ofcourse, I still wanted to upgrade to 10.7, so here's the solution to 10.7
    10.7:
upgrading was a simple click with the mouse, worked like a charm, Office still worked, and some minor updates installed through software.
    Front Row however, gone...
I used the steps outlined in http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/21/front-row-for-mac-os-x-lion/ to get Front Row back:
    - first get the package from Madhatter: Download the free package installer by MacHatter
    - install, or customize the install
    - all done.
Then I used the steps from step 3 through 7 outlined above in solution 10.6.
    Catch:
So I did not find a solution to fooling the DVD Player / Front Row with the USB stick. So everytime I watch VIDEO_TS in Front Row the USB stick must be inserted. But, the good news, I can still use my remote control for something.
Hope I helped some guys out there with this solution.
    Regards,
    Johnno

The issue has previously hit Apple TV owners. I think people came to the conclusion that it was a HDMI handshake problem. Basically the process where the device and TV greet each other, make up some rules about communicationg and what their secret key is and so on.
I haven't tried this yet, but my local service center says that basically I can do one of two things:
    - Downgrade to 10.7 and then download the 10.7.1 update from Apples website. To do this without having a Mac OS X Lion disc, you can hold down CMD + R when the computer boots to be able to access the recovery partition on newer Macs that come without the OS disc.
    or..
    - Put something in between the computer and TV. For example, if you're using an amplifier as a part of your home theather set up, this will probably work. The service guy said he has his Mini connected to the amplifier, which in turn is connected to speakers and a projector. The inverted colors still appear, but only once per night (i.e. after the first problem is reset by resetting the link then it's fine).
For now, I'll do my little dance of changing the source on the TV from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2 and then back again to reset the link... But, I'll probably try downgrading in a few days.

  • Front Row Darker Than Quicktime

I am using an intel Mini as a media center with an HDTV. When I play the same Quicktime video with Front Row it is darker than when I play it directly with Quicktime. I believe Front Row uses Quicktime to play the video, so I don't understand why it should be darker.
I could adjust the TV, but don't want to do that every time. According to other threads, there are no settings for Front Row, though I understand that they exist for AppleTV.

While it's right that there are no settings for front row,
    there are settings for Quicktime.
I don't know whether that's limited to QT Pro, but I remember a menu called something like "A/V-Controls" under "Windows" in QT.
There you might have set it to be brighter and saved the movie, so QT would remember your setting.
Front Row seems to ignore these settings, however.
You can check easily by selecting your movie in Finder's column view; the preview ignores the QT settings, too.
I'm not completely sure about this, but maybe you could check whether it helps.
    greets,
    Ludwig

  • Front Row not marking media as watched in iTunes after viewing.

Since updating to iTunes 10 I have noted that when I watch video in Front Row that the video file is not marked as watched in iTunes even though the full clip is played in Front Row. The podcast is marked as partially watched (half a blue ball).

  • Front Row wont play my iphoto library

Do I have too many pictures in my library to load? The screen stays black and no slideshow starts, and sometimes I have to restart the computer to get out of the black screen, cant back out with escape button or menu button on the remote.

Which version of iPhoto are you using? Which version of QuickTime do you have? (You can check in the QuickTime System Preferences.) Do other parts of Front Row work correctly? Does your iPhoto run correctly on its own? I have nearly 50,000 pictures in my iPhoto library and I can sort through them with Front Row. How many pictures do you have?

  • Front Row not affecting Metadata

When I watch a video on Front Row, it doesn't increase the Play Count or the "new" dot in iTunes. This makes a nonsense of things when I try and sync up the unwatched episodes to my iPod Classic!
Would love to hear of a fix. Thanks!

I think that's because the QuickTime Player application is actually playing the videos, not iTunes. This is how Front Row can play movies that are both in iTunes as well as in your user's "Movies" folder. iTunes couldn't play movies that weren't already it its library. I would send Apple some Mac OS X feedback, since this is really a Front Row issue not an iTunes issue:
