Scrolling titles and speed up Movie folder access in Front Row?

I have two questions regarding Front Row and have been unable to find an answer for them yet.
1. A number of my movies/TV shows have very long but similar titles. When I select one, is there a way for the title to scroll and show the whole title much like a long song title scrolls across the screen of my iPod?
2. Accessing my "Movies" folder takes a long time. Is there some way to speed this up, possibly a cache folder that may have its permissions messed up?
Cheers.

YES GET THE UPDATES!
i had the same problem and it happened after i updated my itunes to 7.6 (to support video rentals). what you have to do is make sure you have ALL the latest updates - including front row and OS X updates. as soon as i did that - everything was back to working order. you can update by clicking your system preferences and choosing updates. it will automatically inform you of any outdated software you may have.
hope this helps.
cheers.

  • Movie trailers in the front row / video

I am wondering if there is anyway to get rid of those movie trailers in the front row/video? They must be taking up hundreds of mb of space? Fun to watch but gees...I would rather have the space on my hard drive (I am stingy that way):)

Jeffrey is correct, Front Row plays the movie trailers from Apple's Web site. They're not kept on your hard drive. That's how they change every week. While a small "cache" might remain behind after playing one, it should be cleaned-off the next time you log off or restart.

  • DVD subtitle access in front row?

Does anybody know if it is possible, while viewing DVDs in front row, to get the subtitiles on the screen? I know that it is possilbe when using the "DVD player" program that comes with macs. Any ideas?
    Thanks,

DVDs used to be played in the background, behind the Front Row GUI, with the DVD Player application. This changed with version 1.3 and now DVDs are played directly with Front Row through QuickTime.

QuickTime cannot play DVDs. Not even if you buy the MPEG2 codec for QuickTime (it will not play the sound, or the DVD menu, only the video from a .VOB file). What is happening is that FrontRow is talking to the "DVDPlayback.framework" that underlies the DVD Player application (in the past as you point out it used to merely ask the DVD Application to do this). It is not QuickTime.
    See http://developer.apple.com/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/OSXTechnology_Overview/SystemTechnology/chapter_4_section3.html
However, regardless of how FrontRow is now doing it, it is still the case that you should then be able to see the initial DVD menu (from the disk) and to select and turn on subtitles via that menu (assuming the DVD in question has such a menu and it includes such a choice).

  • FAR and AWAY going into  bogie nights title - and speed

I am making an intro to a video I am making for my wife's 40th birthday. In video I am starting with scrolling titles either far and away or the other one at scrolls.
I want to have running copy on the screen that moves slow enough for people to read it then the last word will be. This is the story about....
As soon as the ... is in the middle of the screen I want it to switch to the Boogie night title with my wife's name.
What is happening is that the... fade off the screen and there is a big pause between the... and the boogie nights with my wife's name. How do I make this work smoothly and quick?

The last item being this? ~> This is a story about.... (after the sroll title?)
Without going into iMovie and trying to replicate your issue, what about just working w/ the Scroll Title ONLY in a project. Get it the way you want it. Export it. Re import it into new Project and then add the Boogie Night Title and trim it to your liking. Would that work? What do you mean by POP? Just a static title?

  • Getting avi, mpeg and quicktime movies to play in front row

Having located the movies folder - I have created alias's for my movie folders on my external hard drive. However some of the these movies play perfectly well and some do not.
Also when I drag an mpeg movie into the folder to play in Front row - the sound comes through fine but without any picture.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    cheers

It is all about the codecs used in within the movie files, quite often even though files are named .avi or .mpg they are not of the same format as the codecs used to rip the files are different.
Alas there are hundreds of variations so therefore your best bet is to get add ons like Perian or Flip4Mac which add various codecs to Quicktime.

  • What movie file types will front row recognise?

will it play any windows media or asf files?

Besides playing DVD movies, Front Row does not really "play" anything. It will open iTunes in the background and play your music. It will open iPhoto in the background and play your pictures. If you choose the "Movies" section, it will open the QuickTime Player in the background and play your movies. So, as long as you can open and play your movies manually with the QuickTime Player, you can access them in Front Row.

  • IMovie crashes when browsing Titles, and when exporting movie.

Frequent occurance.  Crashes when browsing Titles. When re-opening it goes to a previous project.
2nd problem, also frequent but always with one project.  I have tried numerous things, all unsuccessful. Have gone back to iPhoto to redo slideshow, have checked photo permissions, then rebuild movie but still unsuccessful.  Message:  "EXC BAD ACCESS (SIGSEGV)".

Sometimes iMovie Projects become corrupted and can cause iMovie to crash. This is what worked for me after months of frustration without any solution.
Copy the iMovie Projects folder to the desktop. To avoid confusion rename this folder Desktop iMovie Projects. Do not delete these projects from the Desktop iMovie Projects folder.
Then delete all projects from the original iMovie Projects folder for iMovie - found Mac HD > Users > (Your home folder) > Movies > iMovie Projects.
Either create a simple test movie project in iMovie or...
or take, from Desktop iMovie Projects folder, one of the projects that you know was successfully exported in the past and copy from the Desktop iMovie Projectsfolder into the original iMovie Projects folder.
    Try launching iMovie again.
In turn take, from Desktop iMovie Projects folder, another of the projects and copy from the Desktop iMovie Projects folder into the original iMovie Projects folder.
Close and restart iMovie. Try to export this project
In transferring one project at a time you can isolate the corrupted project(s)

  • How to scroll up and down in IBM client access using windows 7 on mac running bootcamp

How to scrool up and down in Client Access 5250 (AS/400 emulator) using windows 7 on Mac running boot camp. The key board does not function within the client access 5250 session?

You can also share a printer between the Mac/PC as well as files and mounted Volumes, see the Tiger articles here
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/
You may want to use Bonjour for Windows on your PC
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bonjour/
Then there are VNC clients for Mac/PC that also allow you to actually control the other machine, if they aren't in the same room and you just need to check something quick that can be handy, it's kind of slow though for regular use.
The main benefit of partitioning is being able to have different versions of bootable OS on them. You can try out Leopard on a new partition, while keeping your Tiger partition intact, you can have a XP/Vista partition for parallels or BootCamp, etc... other than that drives are pretty much fast enough, having smaller partitions probably won't realize any significant speed ups over searching the whole large drive.

  • Scrolling through videos freezes Front Row

I have many home videos in iTunes and thus Front Row. When scrolling up and down the list of videos in Front Row, I see the thumbnail sized videos begin to run. Eventually Front Row freezes when scrolling up/down through the list. Remote doesn't respond, keyboard and mouse do not respond and ultimately I have to either remotely logon and kill FrontRow.app or reboot. I know that all of these videos are playable without error using the QT player and in iTunes so the files are OK and furthermore are playable in the thumbnails again the next time in FrontRow.
Anyone see this problem and know how to fix or work around? Thanks in advance.
BTW, these videos are full sized H.264 videos converted from DVDs I had previously made with a miniDV camcorder. I've played iPod sized versions of these videos in Front Row with no problem except that now I am using an HDTV and the iPod sized versions are no longer good enough.

I agree, but the problem only occured while scrolling. I was able to play each of the videos beginning to end. The problem was reproducable over a short time but not with any particular set of videos. In any case, the problem did go away as I am able to scroll up/down through all the videos with no problem. There's also been a few firmware updates, OS updates, and quicktime updates. Any of these could have fixed the problem. I'm happy to have my 'media center' Mac back in action.

  • Play movies in movie folder on ATV?

So I've just picked up a cheap 160g old ATV from the refurb store, so I've got a question, or two!
My setup at home is a Mac Mini in the living room hooked into one of the TV's, which has hundreds of movies, mainly in AVI format, on an external, which we can access thru Front Row thanks to the alias in the movies folder and watch on the connected TV. We also have a few movies in the iTunes library on this machine, which we can also watch via frontrow.
Now the movies on the external are many and varied, from adults to kids, and there is a lot of them, for this reason I don't want them all in the iTunes library. On the external they're split into different folders by genre etc. There are just too many movies to put in one folder, or the iTunes library.
Now the new ATV will be going into the lounge, and I know it will sync itself with the media in the Mac Mini's iTunes library, but we'd also like to be able to stream the movies from the external to it to. Ideally with the ability to navigate to them in the same way we do using Frontrow on the TV connected to the Mini.
Can I do this? I realise I might need to hack the ATV a bit, this doesn't bother me unduly.
Failing that being possible, can I simple remove the external from the Mini and plug it into the ATV and get access to it's contents that way?
Worth noting..... I don't want to convert all the movies to the iTunes friendly format. Yes, I know AVI is old, and rubbish and so on, but I'm happy with them that way. This is my personal choice, so please, no need to take this thread OT on that one!
Also, I'm aware that Apple might not have intended me to use the ATV in this way, but it's mine now, so I'll use it the way I want, not the way Apple dictate. So please don't bother going OT on that one either.
Finally, yes i know there is a new ATV out, and that I maybe should have got that one, but again, I know what I'm doing, and that was my personal choice. So leave that one too.
I'm putting in these last three comments to try to stop the thread disappearing off into directions it's not intended to, and to stop the usual arguments that start when someone mentions using an Apple product in a slightly different way to that intended.

    stevebb wrote:

no. appletv can only access content that is in itunes
Failing that being possible, can I simple remove the external from the Mini and plug it into the ATV and get access to it's contents that way?
no. the USB port has no end user function.

    appletv cannot play AVI files

note that my answers refer to a standard "as is" appletv. discussions regarding hacking or modifications (which i suspect is what you want to do) are not permitted here as per Ts&Cs.
if you want to do anything other than what it is designed to do then you will need to seek assistance elsewhere.

  • Soft subtitles in movies and Front Row problem solved

    Hi,
Sorry for this long post but I hope this will help other users of Front Row.
This is how I create a testmovie.mov file from an DVD, TS_FOLDER or other source and the subtitles (soft) will work in Front Row, Quicktime, iTunes, without Perian or other special plugin. In my case the subtitle is NOT burn into the video. It is a track in the testmovie.mov file.
Also I use Elgato turbo h.264 HD to speed up coding. Not necessary.
    1. Create a .m4v movie file (h.264 codec)
In my case I start the application that comes with Elgato turbo h.264 HD device, called Turbo.264.HD
    2. Drop the DVD, TS_FOLDER or other video to convert, onto Turbo.264.HD application or other video converting application.
    3. Click on the little "i" info symbol and the select Audio. The source maybe contains different languages. Click OK.
    4. Select Format. In my case "Apple TV" format (I will use this video on my Mac Mini). Click Start. After a while the video is finished. In this example I call it testmovie.m4v
    5. Download subtitles from Internet. Google: subtitles download
    6. Open the testmovie.m4v in RoadMovie application. This application works for me, but there may be others. http://www.bitfield.se/roadmovie
    7. In RoadMovie, click on Subtitles button and then open the downloaded subtitle file. In this example called testmovie.srt Also, click on the "little eye" Preview. In this view you can adjust the time offset for the subtitle to sync with the video.
    8. In RoadMovie select "Export for: Flattened". This will create a testmovie.mov file with a new subtitle track in it, without ecoding the video.
    9. Open testmovie.mov in, in my case, Quicktime Pro and the select Show Movie Properties.
    10. Select the video track and set the Transparency to Composition. Layer 0
    11. Select the subtitle track and set Transparency to Straight Alpha. Layer 0
    12. Save changes and close Quicktime Pro
    13. Move the testmovie.mov to Movies folder
    14. Start Front Row and select Movies->Movies Folder->testmovie.mov
    Voila!
    /rob

So, as far as I can tell, it's a one-or-the-other situation. Either Front Row doesn't display subtitles (actually, no video at all), or it does (with this workaround). Can't seem to toggle them. If anyone knows of a better way...
So, good job in finding a (multi-step, multi-application, convoluted) way to get this to work, but I'd hardly call this "solved." Don't get me wrong, I'd have never figured this out in a million years. Just...not quite ideal, is it?
I gave Plex a spin, and while it does offer the ability, in theory, to toggle subtitles, I haven't been able to get it to work, either with with this trick or without. I can't believe this is so hard to get right...Apple, if you're listening, there are people who use Front Row. Keep working on it! How about using that middle button of the remote for bringing up an options menu for the currently playing track, rather than duplicating the play/pause button?
Sorry, just frustrated; I finally got a Mac Mini for hooking up to the TV, and now I'm discovering how hard this is.

  • Front Row won't play movie trailers and previews

When I try to access the apple movie/Tv trailers through front row I get the message:
"the selected video could not be played. The format was not recognized"
Front Row and iTunes are both updated to the latest version-
My Firewall's set to allow all incoming connections-
The trailers work fine in iTunes
Any ideas what could be causing this and what I can do about it?

I am also experiencing this problem. When I select the Trailer I want to watch, it gives my the same error. Both iTunes and Front Row are updated to the latest version. If it helps, I recently did a complete re-install of my system. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help us here!

  • Front row doesn't see remote source movie folder

    Hi,
I did a forum search and didn't see this addressed anywhere else.
When I open a remote source in Leopard Front Row, and navigate to the movie folder, it displays what is in the local movie folder rather than what is in the remote computer's movie folder. It will see movies in the remote iTunes library. All machines I have tested are at 10.5.1. I enabled iTunes sharing on each of the machines I used as a remote source.
Is there a setting I am missing somewhere or is this just the way Front Row works in Leopard?
    Thanks!

Funny, I was just investigating this myself. This occurred in my setup as well, which includes:
    - iMac running Leopard 10.5.1, iTunes 7.5 (19) with password-free sharing enabled, running as a media server, hosting these types of files (all legally purchased and owned, in case anyone from the MPAA is reading this):
    - DVD movies ripped to VIDEO_TS folders using MacTheRipper
    - MP4 movies ripped with Handbrake
    - MPG and MOV format home movies
    - Macbook Pro running Front Row 2.0 (229) on Leopard 10.5.1 as a client
    - Local Wifi D-Link 624 (802.11g) network with external firewalls, but no restrictions on local traffic
    - OS X firewalls disabled on both iMac and Macbook Pro
As a workaround, I did the following:
    1. Using Finder on the Macbook Pro client, connected to the iMac Movies folder. This mounts the remote folder locally on the client.
    2. Grabbed the iMac Movies icon and dragged it to the Macbook Pro client's Movies folder. This creates an alias to the remote folder. If you want, you can rename this alias to something like "Remote Movies".
    3. Opened Front Row > Movies in the Macbook Pro. I now can see my locally stored movies as well as the remotely-stored movies under the newly-created folder alias. All my remote movies now play locally in Front Row.
Anyone else have a more-elegant solution?
    Regards,
    Steven

  • Other Computer's Movie Folder

I've got a Mac Mini in the living room, hooked up to a TV. It of course can watch all the movies in the iTunes movie folder as well as the movies in the regular "Movies" folder itself.
From my iMac in the other room, I can, using the Sources option in Front Row, watch the movies that are in the Mini's iTunes moivies folder. I'd like to be able to also watch the movies in the regular "Movies" folder. Is this possible using Front Row?

    Doug,
All of my computers have file sharing turned on.
All of my computers have iTunes sharing turned on and selected playlists, movies, tv shows, audiobooks are checked to share.
All of my computers have iPhoto sharing turned on.
When I open Front Row, I have to go to Source, Music, and then the movies folder on the shared computer shows up. However, it will NOT play a movie even though there is a movie there.
It says something like "there are no songs in this playlist"...
This is a lot different than the photos sharing.
You do not have to select a source for photo sharing like music.
Select Photos, then the next window in Front Row shows "Shared Photos" at the very top.
When I click on that I can view my shared photos from the other computer(s)...
It seems they should have something like that for Movies but it isn't there that I see.
I used to be able to watch shared movies with Tiger and Front Row.
I can no longer do it.
