Scrubbing Audio causes AE to beachball

Computer (OSX 10.6.8)
Mac Pro 4.1
Model Identifier: MacPro4,1
  Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
  Processor Speed: 2.93 GHz
  Number Of Processors: 2
  Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per processor): 8 MB

Preview - Open GL is off  (behavior is the same with Open GL on)
Audio Duration set to 30 seconds

As the title says, scrubbing any audio inside of After Effects causes the program to beachball, pegging processor use at 100.9% and the program gets marked as not responding. By scrubbing audio, I mean holding down the command key while dragging through the timeline to preview the video with the audio for timing cuts and hits. This is happening with projects that only contain an image sequence and a sound file, projects with 3d camera moves and multiple layers... pretty much if I have  to bring a sound file in to AE, I know it will crash when I need to check the audio.
I have tried opening a fresh project with only an audio file (a new project for each a wav, a mp3, and an m4a) and attempting to scrub through the timeline causes AE to freeze.
I am beyond frustrated at this point, as quick projects have turned in to days of work. Any ideas on how to revert AE back to a usable product are greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the delay in response, I was on vacation and have just gotten caught up enough to return to this issue.
I had the most recent Wacom drivers when reporting the issue. There was a new version released today and I have updated to that. Updating the wacom driver did not resolve the issue.
OpenGL is disabled. The issue persists with OpenGL enabled.
I disabled "hardware accelerate panels" and I am able to now scrub through a single audio track of any format on the second try.
I attempt to scrub through a track and my machine beach balls for a minute
I regain control of the program and am able to scrub through a single audio file
When I get to a second audio file in the timeline my machine beachballs and After Effects stops responding just like before
Here is the most recent crash log - http://pastebin.com/cxBujE9F
This happens when switching from a wav to a wav, form a wav to an aif, wav to mp3, mp3 to wav, etc. It will freeze for a moment on the first file and completely hang on the second file.

  • Scrubbing audio with puppet tool - crash

    Hey guys,
when i scrub audio with the puppet tool in effects, i get a crash now and then.  It usually has a backup saved, but wonder if anyone has any insight?

Hey Todd, I rushed this question out. I know the rules I've just been pulling late nights trying to get a project out. I'm the chef blaming his oven... I'm fully updated in CS5.5 8core Mac pro 32gigs ram.
It is an Mp3 with option held down to scrub.   Thing is, I get the same result with a wav or aiff.  I've had this problem before and it's usually answered by "turn off open GL" or the like.  Just wondering if there's been more insight into what causes this.  Basically, if I scrub too much or too quickly , I risk a crash.

  • Is anyone having problems scrubbing audio?

In previous versions of FCP, scrubbing audio with the mouse was fine. Since going to Mavericks and FCP 10.1.1, the strangest thing: scrubbing audio on my timeline is creating an annoying garbling of the audio. The scrub feature for editing my audio on the timeline is essentially worthless, besides annoying. Is this just my system or is anyone else in the community having a similar issue? Just curious. Thanks.

This is a major problem with Lollipop, but yo said it started 2 months ago.   Several people have fixed problem by removing FaceBook And Face book messenger and then re loading the apps again.   You might want to clear your cache before reloading.  Not sure this is your problem, but worth a try.  Good Luck

  • After Effects CC 2014 not scrubbing audio

Hey, I'm using After Effects CC 2014, and none of the usual shortcuts are scrubbing audio (I've tried command-drag, ctrl-drag, and alt-drag). I'm not sure where the problem is. Is there something new I'm not aware of or some kind of preview setting that I need to adjust?
Edit: When I scrub the audio, the volume levels change in the audio panel, but no sound is produced. When I do a RAM preview, the sound is there.

I have 13.1.1.3, I'm running OS 10.9.5, and which system specs would be relevant? Just the hardware overview?

  • Scrubbing Audio in Sample Editor-Icons missing

My Sample Editor's toolbox is missing both the Solo button and pencil tool.
As I don't have access to the solo tool, I can't scrub audio. I do have the arrow, hand and zoom icons..just no icons for solo and pencil that are supposed to show up underneth them. I've reinstalled logic express 7.1 but to no avail. The "Audiosuite" menu is also not there which is far less of a concern. Anyone else have this problem?
    Thanks in advance.

OK. Thanks. I thought that might be the case. It just seems like audio scrubbing should be a basic enough function to have in both versions of Logic.

  • Warning "RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames" after scrubbing audio in After Effects CC 2014 (13.0)

The After Effects team are investigating a bug in After Effects CC 2104 (13.0) where a memory leak occurs while scrubbing audio (holding down the CTRL or Command key while scrubbing). This memory leak can eventually consume all free RAM, which can lead to the warning message "After Effects error: RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames to playback" when you try to initiate a RAM preview.
While we investigate this problem, you can avoid the bug and memory leak by not scrubbing with audio. When the problem occurs you can resolve it by closing and restarting After Effects.

  • Scrubbing audio enabled slows timeline

When I have audio scrubbing enabled timeline scrubbing is clunky and slow. It appears to only display various frames as if I were editing an MPEG file. (I am working with AVI's.) Turning off audio scrub solves the problem. The timeline responds lightning fast displaying every frame. Can someone explain why this is?
I am fairly new to premiere. I am just wondering if it is normal or whether I have an issue that can be corrected. The other edit system I have used for years scrubbed audio without an issue. Perhaps Premiere handles the audio differently.
Intel Core2 QUAD CPU 2.5 GHz
    4 Gig Ram
    Nvidea 9800GT
    Vista 64 Bit OS

Turning off the "audio scrub" did eliminate part of my issue - I can now open a clip in the SOURCE monitor and scrub smoothly. However, when an in or out point is added to the clip, the scrubbing becomes very choppy. Tested the same clips in CS3 with no issues.
My machine is built for editing and far exceeds the minimum specs. Also, my clips are being stored on an internal SATA drive so it's not due to network or external drive lag. Any ideas on why this is happening? Why would it happen in CS4 but not CS3?
The issue is making it difficult/impossible to complete a project that contains hundreds of individual clips.

  • Freezing issues with AE CS3 (Scrubbing Audio & Video, Rendering)

    I have a Mac Pro 8 core 2.8 (Jan 2008), 6GB Ram, Mac OS 10.5.2 (Clean Install), AE 8.0.2, QT 7.4.1, ATI Radeon 2600...
I can scrub video by dragging the now line, but when I hold down the command key to scrub audio and video, After Effects saves a copy and freezes up every time... Doesn't matter sd or hd comps... I've tried removing both AE and QT plug ins & Codecs to see if any were bad... I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling...
Not sure if this is related, but After Effects also saves a copy and freezes up whenever it finishes rendering a composition...
Aside from that everything else works fine, so I can get work done, just slows down the workflow a bit...
Never had problems with AE CS3 on my Dual G5/Tiger, Though I'm not sure what I need to do settingswise on Intel/Leopard... Any suggestions would be appreciated...

First of all I want to thank Jonas and Mylenium for your suggestions... Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner, but I had a few deadlines to meet this week...
I tried both suggestions... I was still getting crashes...
Just an hour ago, I figured out the problem... I also have a MOTU 828 firewire audio interface plugged in, and it was set to output After Effects audio... as soon as I turned it off, I could monitor scrubbing audio, and I was able to render without crashes...
I'm assuming that anytime After Effects would send audio to the 828, it would crash (including the chime after rendering)... I never had this problem before with my G5/Tiger setup, so I never considered it... I guess thats where I should have started in the first place... In the meantime, I'll have to bring this bug to the attention of MOTU and see if they can figure it out in their driver...
    Thanks again guys!

  • Audio Causes Safari to Hang with beachball of death

I get the following error in the console:
Error loading /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/DVCPROHDAudio.plugin/Contents/MacOS/DVCPROHDAudio: dlopen(/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/DVCPROHDAudio.plugin/Contents/MacOS/DVCPROHD Audio, 262): no suitable image found. Did find:

This error hits every time I try and run safari and use any kind of sound. For example, if I go to a site where I can play a sound file Safari will lock up, beach ball of death and then I have to force quit. When I look in the console I get the above error. Noticed also that any applications that use sound (games, apps, etc.) will also produce this error and the audio playback sometimes will not work. Interestingly, I can use Firefox without any problems on sites that will lock up Safari when audio is involved.
Any advice? I searched the forums and google but didn't see much! Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

    Hi Carolyn,
I tried it and it still locks up and gives the dreaded spinning beach ball. Every time Safari freezes it logs this in the console:

  • Stereo audio causes "Video Bitrate too High" error

    SOS, Whizzkids.
I try to make a build of a DVD with 1 menu and 3 tracks. , and I get an error message "Video Bitrate Too High." I check the compression setting and they're set to factory default for SD 4by3. (4 and 7 MB).
Get this: I delete one channel of audio from each of the 3 tracks and it compiles perfectly.
I duplicate audio channel 1 by option-dragging to channel 2 for one track, recompile and get the same error.
    I give in. Wassup?
    Any help gratefully received.

Did you convert your audio to AC-3 (Dolby Digital)?
If not, this is the likely cause of your problem. Run your audio through A.Pack (if using DVDSP 3 or earlier) or Compressor 2 (if using DVDSP 4). The "Dolby 2.0" presets in Compressor 2 are the Dolby Digital, but it's recommended to change the following settings and make a new preset.
Set dialog normalization to -31 and the Compression Preset to "None". They default to -27 and "Film Standard", respectively.

  • Audio Causing Multicam Crashes - AudioRenderContextConstructor.ccp-110

    Hello -
I do a lot of multicam interview edits and am running into a relatively consistent crash inducing scenario, namely, editing a multicam group with any audio inserts applied causes premiere to crash. The official error is related to AudioRenderContextConstructor.ccp-110.
Typically, I'll "master" my audio within the multicam group using 2 inserts on each active channel (usually only 2 audio tracks) - insert 1 EQ, and insert 2, dynamics. Once I'm happy with the mix, I make my camera selections in another timeline using the multicamera editor window. if I leave the inserts active within the multicam group, I'm guaranteed premiere will crash at some point while editing. If I export a mixdown (.wav), and then re-import it back into the multicam group while disabling the inserts, I'm less likely to crash, but still no guarantees. I've also tried doing an external mix in audition, using the send to audition feature, and it's still crashing on a pretty consistent basis.
I emptied my media cache and reset my preferences yesterday morning, but crashes started coming back by the afternon. Same thing today.
Is there anything I can do to avoid this very annoying problem?
    System config:

I do, however, have screenflow (a screen recording app) installed, if that's important. My only expereince with soundflower was when it came bundled with another screen recording app called iShowuHD, which I have never had installed on this machine.

  • Edits to video or audio causing computer lock up freeze

I've been away from FCE video editing for a while, back to it with a simple project. Having problem where the whole computer will lock up when I try to move clips or adjust audio clip lengths. It will EVENTUALLY honor my action. One time it took 14 minutes, one time 10 minutes. I can tell because the clock stops, I can't do anything on the computer except move the mouse. I have to either wait or power off the computer.
I went back in the posts to mid-May, didn't see anything referencing this kind of problem. Was there something in a QT or OS X 10.4.? release that is causing this?
I tried deleting preferences, I tried the spotlight fix - making my FCE Documents folder hidden from Spotlight. I'm running 10.4.9 on a 1.8 single G5.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. This is taking forever!

    1.8 single G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I'm using FCE HD 3.0. I'm using QT 7.1.6. I'm using OS X System version 10.4.9 (8P135). Nothing appears under Software Update.
The media is an export from an iPhoto slideshow. It exported as a .mov file, I didn't pick any unusual options.
I discovered that I can move a clip forward 1.0 seconds (29 frames) and it won't freeze. It freezes at the 1.23 second mark - consistently.
I have managed to finish my project by subdividing it into smaller sequences, and making 1.0 second edits in those sequences. And saving after every move.
However, I have a couple more projects coming up, and want to get to the bottom of this issue. I will experiment with some media coming right off my camcorder, and see if I have the same problems. I will report back.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions ...

  • FaceTime audio causes phone to restart?

My phone has restarted during the last two FaceTime audio calls I've made. Both happened at about the 20-30 mark, and had a weird "frozen" screen look like if a tv isn't tuned properly to an OTA broadcast signal for a few moments before hard resetting to the white screen and black apple logo. Both calls were over wifi at a hotel.
Has anyone else seen this problem?  Is it a known issue?  I haven't been able to find any other discussions on this but two times in a row can't be coincidence.

Sounds like there are random restarts being caused by the latest iOS, as it happened to me today while listening to a podcast and using an app.
It may have something to do with the audio because I haven't had this happen when audio wasn't being used.

  • Extracted audio caused distortion in video timing

    i need help!
i am making a music video for class.
from the edit menu i chose select all and then extracted audio, so that I could go in individually to each clip and delete the audio i did not need. when i tried to do a test delete and played the clip back the audio was gone like i wanted, but the song and the video were totally out of sync and my computer froze up and just played a bleep of sound here and showed a random clip there.
it took forever to unfreeze. it is still out of sync even after restarting my computer. the audio is still extracted from all the clips but the video and audio are still totally out of sync. I'm thinking if I could just unextract all the audio or revert it back to the original...that would solve the problem, but it will not let me do so?
some of the audio files are still available in my trash including audio for the whole video.
    any suggestions?

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
'Extracting' audio just copies it and puts it in an audio track underneath the video, and then silences the original sound within the video clip. So it does two jobs, instead of just silencing the audio.
To silence audio within a clip, just click on the little clock, at lower left, to show the full Timeline view, and then in the Menu at the top of the screen use 'View' and 'Show Clip Volume Levels'. You can then select a clip, and click on the little loudspeaker icon, alongside the volume level "Clip: 100%".
Your audio going out of sync sounds more like iMovie 4 rather than iMovie5/HD. But if your hard disc is close to being full on the iBook, that can cause problems for iMovie.
To fix things, you could try the following:
    (1) As your audio should now be in separate audio clips beneath the video, you should be able to click on and then slide ('drag') your audio clips to line them up with the appropriate video, then use Apple+'L' to Lock the audio to the relevant video.
    (2) As all the original audio remains within the video clips, but it's just had its volume reduced to zero during the 'Extraction', you could select the video clips, and return their volume up to 100% with that little volume slider at the bottom of the screen. When you've done that, UN-TICK (un-check) the little boxes at the extreme right which switches on or off the sound from the audio track(s), so that only the video track is ticked, and try playing the video: all the audio should now be back. If that plays OK, you can then just delete all the separate audio in the track(s) beneath, then Save your project. Then re-tick (check) the audio track boxes again, so that they're not disabled.
The original audio should now be restored, and you can do what you like with it. But it's always better to just reduce to zero any sound you don't want, rather than duplicating it - by 'Extracting' - and then just silencing the original ..and possibly the duplicate. That doubles the work which your Mac has to do during playback ..as it has to keep looking for the separate audio instructions, in its master project file, as well as playing back the video.
So (a) make sure that you've LOTS of spare space on your iBook, and (b) don't strain it too much by giving it too much to do, and (c) things may go smoother if you keep your video projects on a separate, fast (5400rpm or faster) FireWire hard disc (formatted as 'Mac OS Extended' or 'HFS+') plugged in to the iBook, rather than on the iBook's internal disc, and (d) make sure that you have no other programs running when you're editing with iMovie ..as iMovie needs as much of the Mac's attention as possible, and may be sluggish on a slow Mac if there are other programs running.
    Hope this helps..

  • Scrubbing audio cuts out while editing iMovie project

    Hello,
I put all of the clips, nearly an hour, in the project, and am editing just by deleting what I don't want. I keep losing audio while scrubbing. Would having less video in the project window fix that? It came back just now by restarting iMovie, but cut out again.
    Thank you

    and welcome to forum
    *No audio on DVD disc.*
    Most common origin.
    1 Imported audio from iTunes.
    • In iTunes copy out as an audio-CD .aiff
    • Use this in Your movie project
2 Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi etc.
    • Change them to .aiff. Use an audio editor like Audacity (free)
3 Main audio is set to off in System Preferences - Does this by it self - Don’t know why
    Cheque Audio-Out resp. Audio-In

Had the same problem; some Googling around gave me a kludgy, but effective fix
Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.
That worked for me, and so far I haven't encountered any deficiencies—except it takes more advanced versions of Perian to enable QuickTime to handle subtitles in .srt format—that I have noticed.
    5. GarageBand fix.
In this set audio to 44.1 kHz (Klaus1 suggestion)
(if this don’t work try 48 kHz - me guessing)
    Before burning the DVD.
    • Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
    • Double click on the .img file
    • Test it with Apple DVD-player
If it’s OK then make Your DVD.
Burn at x1 speed.... (or x4)
    • In iDVD 08 - or - 09
    • Burn from DiskImage with Apple Disk Util tool
    • OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it
