Scrubbing through 1080i sluggish

So Im working with some footage shot 1080i and have noticed scrubbing through the video is sluggish. I changed he playback controls to high from dynamic and unchecked scrub at high quality. Is there anything else i can do to increase performance?

Try connecting it directly to the computer without anything else connected to the computer via firewire and see if that makes a difference. If not, try running the diskutility: repair on the drive and getting diskwarrior if you don't have it.
Also, try bringing it into a new fcp project and see if that makes a difference.

  • Scrubbing through cached comp very sluggish

I have a comp that has been RAM Previewed and consequently, the entire status bar above the timeline is green.
However if I take my playhead and drag through the timeline, the screen updates very very slowly (perhaps 1~2fps).  But I can RAM Preview at full speed.
Any ideas? I thought once it's cached, and you aren't changing any parameters, it should scrub through because it's all loaded in RAM, yes? I swear I've done this a billion times in the past.
48GB Mac with 10GB free for other stuff. 200GB HDD Global Cache (although nothing in the status bar is blue. It's all green)

Yup! Expressions is what's killing it. I have several LinesCreator 3D lines which uses copious amount of code to do its magic.
    Shake 'n Bake those expressions!

  • When scrubbing through all of my clips, the video lags and there is a green frame that stays on the screen.

In the viewer, not the timeline, I scrub through the media that I have (1080i video) and the video lags. There is also a green frame that hovers over where the cursor is when scrubbing and I can't see the clips. Final Cut should be running smoothly...

  • While playing music on my iphone 5, i am now unable to play, pause, or skip songs while my phone is locked. I can still change the volume and slide the scrub through songs.  This has always worked for me until now. I have not changed any settings

While playing music on my iphone 5, i am now unable to play, pause, or skip songs while my phone is locked. I can still change the volume and scrub through songs.  This has always worked for me until now. As far as i know, i have not changed any settings.  This is whle my phone is locked both on the slide up toolbar/menu interface and on the normal screen before i slide to unlock.

I skimmed through this very long post but from what I read, this sounds much more like a coverage issue with your network than a device issue.  I have not seen or heard of this issue before and I do not have this issue personnally and & I use the music app quite frequently while working in the yard.
The DND feature should not be a factor at all if you're sure it's turned off.  I always recommend restarting your phone by holding down the home button + the lock button for 10-12 seconds until the Apple logo appears.  Once the phone reboots, do a test to see if this has helped to resolve the issue.
If not, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.  Then, test it out again.  Post back if neither of these solutions solve your issue.

  • When I scrub through the timeline in AEcc things get pixelated beyond recognition

In after effects cc, when I scrub through un-renedered portions of the timline, the image in the viewer becomes too pixelated to make out until I release the mouse again. I get the same result with even a plain video file without any effects on it. It also does it if I go to adjust an effect by scrubbing a value with the mouse. Basically this is making it so I can't preview effects or other changes to my comp in realtime. I have to pic a value, let it render, see if it's good, change the value, let it render, etc... This also accurs regardless of the resolution selected (full, half, third, quarter).
...happenening only now, after I completely upgraded my computer & software.
    Is this a settings issue?
    Thanks!

You are seeing the result of using Adaptive Resolution preview mode:

  • H.264 MPEG 4 slow to scrub through.. What best to convert to?

I'm on a PC Intel i5 2500k, Geforce 560Ti, 20 gigs of ram, and I notice that while I can scrub footage off of a 60D just fine, when I import and try to scrub through video taken off my Toshiba Camileo, they are so slow. G spot says its H.264/MPEG-4 AVC. Wondering what best to transcode to to better work inside Premiere.

res is 1080. For sequence settigns, what i did was use dslr 1080, i figured thats what it is, so that would work fine. But on a hunch I took a clip off the 60d in a bin and dragged it down to the new item and it made a "custom" sequence with settings completely different than the one I started with. The original one had all the sequence settings locked. This new one made by dragging the clip gives options to set the preview file format and codecs. I imagine this will help if I set this properly, but I am confused which to set it to. I just tried a couple different ones and while the 60d footage in the sequence plays fine, if I drag the ones off the Camileo into the sequence and play, it plays fine for a few seconds then lags and catches up with itself.
Theres no effects ont he footage, this is a brand new project.
I have 4 total disks, but 2 are USb storage. The project files for this are on an internal.
This may sound stupid but it plays back better at full res than it does at 1/2 or even 1/4

  • AE CC 2014 memory usage continually rises while scrubbing through timeline

When scrubbing through the time line in AE CC 2014 ver 13.0.0.214 memory usage just increases until there is none left and everything starts to lock up. Purging does not return usage to normal.

I too am getting serious memory issues with CC 2014 vs CC 2013 doing the exact same tasks. Not sure why, but the default settings for previews, disk cache, and memory seem to give me the best performance. So basically...
    don't enable Disk Cache
leave the GPU texture memory at 1500MB (Previews -> GPU Information)
left "RAM reserved for other applications" at 6 GB (in a 32 GB system)

  • After Effects has started crashing when I scrub through timeline.

I've been working on an animation for several weeks and now, starting yesterday, whenever I scrub through the timeline the program crashes on me and gives several error messages. It seems to have started after I added a large image layer with motion blur enabled that moves pretty quick. But even if I turn off motion blur for the whole comp the issue still occurs.
    Error messages are as follows:
After Effects error: crash occurred while invoking format plug-in “PNG”.
After Effects error: crash occurred while invoking rendering plug-in “AE_OpenGL”.
After Effects error: Crash in progress. Last logged message was: <6356> <ASL.ResourceUtils.GetLanguageIDFromRegistry> <0> Unable to obtain the User 'Language' registry key at: Software\Adobe\After Effects\10.5\ Defaulting to 'en_US'.

I have tried several troubleshooting steps such as updating my display drivers, disabling OpenGL in Preferences > Previews, Moving the Extensions folder out of my install, Recreating my preferences, Purging the cache, and even just uninstalling and reinstalling After Effects all to no avail.

Any help from the community would be greatly appreciated. I'm usually good at being able to research and resolve my own issues by this one has me stumped and my boss is on my case about the deadline.
    Thank you.

While I did have OpenGL disabled in Preferences > Previews its seems I still had Fast Previews set to Adaptive Resolution - OpenGL off. I've switched this to just Off and now seem to be back on track. I believe I didn't have an understanding of what all "turn off OpenGL" truly meant. I'll continue working and report back wether or not I have any more issues related to this.
What would have causes this issue to appear in the first place? I've been working in AE 5.5 for about 2 years now doing a multitude of different projects but this is the first time I've run up against this issue. Is my hardware just simply underpowered?

  • Can't hear .wav as I scrub through frames

I used to create flash cartoons with characters lip synced to
sounds. I did it by placing the sound on its own layer and then
drawing each frame's mouth position accurate to the sound in each
    frame.
I synced it by scrubbing (moving) through the frames, and I
could hear each discrete sound for each frame. Now I hear nothing,
which makes it very hard to lip sync! How can I hear the pieces of
    the .wav in each frame?

No, it's not muted. The sound plays when I hit enter, but I
just can't hear it as I'm scrubbing through. I'm on a different
computer, and I wonder if it's some sort of settings issue. It just
functions differently than it did where I was before.
The sound plays when I hit enter, but I can't stop it before
    it's finished.
The sound does not play unless I start it on or before the
    first frame.
I can't hear any sound when dragging through the frames on
    the timeline.

  • Scrubbing through song audio

I am using a song track (an MP3) for some animation that I am doing in AE. It  is hard to scrub through the audio and listen to the singing, when the  music is pretty overpowering. I am straining to hear the words.
What can I do to minimize the music, so that I can hear the words better? (In case it matters, I have all the programs that come with the Master Collection, but I don't pretend to know what I am doing when it comes to sound.
    Thanks!

Sadly, I only have the CS5 Master Collection, and not 5.5... so I don't have Audition.
So there is no way to boost the singing and downplay the music with what I have? (Soundbooth maybe? An audio filter in AE or Premiere?)

  • Scrubbing through long audiobooks

I have several long audiobooks loaded on my iPod and when i try to scrub through to late in the books, the iPod reverts to the list of audiobooks and is back at the beginning again. One in particuliar is frustrating - a 16hr audiobook which i had listened to all but the last hour, but cannot now scrub back to where I left off.
I can play the book through iTunes on my laptop so I believe the file to be intact and have listened further than I can now scrub through to. I can scrub through to about 2:30 from the end and it will play but if I go much further it resets back to the book list and to the beginning.
I have reset the ipod without fixing the problem.
has anybody experienced this frustrating problem? and if so did they find a solution or a workaround?

Try connecting it directly to the computer without anything else connected to the computer via firewire and see if that makes a difference. If not, try running the diskutility: repair on the drive and getting diskwarrior if you don't have it.
Also, try bringing it into a new fcp project and see if that makes a difference.

  • Scrubbing through footage is terribly slow!!!???

Ive just recently bought the adobe cloud, and was wanting to switch from FCP to premiere cs6. But...... first thing ive notices is how terribly slow it is scrubbing through footage on the timeline. Playback is fine, but scrubbing through footage and trying to find an inpoint is painful.  Also, one of the biggest draw cards was the ability to edit native files from the Canon 5D mk2. This is even worse! Once again, playback is fine, but scrubbing through the timeline is just terrible.  I didn't have this problem in FCP... is there something i'm doing wrong?

The short answer: spend hundreds or over a thousand dollars on one of the few outdated Nvidia cards with CUDA that work in a Mac.
The long answer: ditch the Mac and assemble a PC with top of the line components. I was a Mac devotee until I realized that I could have a computer faster than any Mac if I bought high quality components and put it together myself. You don't need to have a degree in computer science, just some knowledge that you can easily acquire online. The three Macs I had all had different problems and were no better than brand PCs that sold for about 3/4s of the price. They were of course better than the piece of junk Dells or Compaqs that sold at Walmart for $400, or even the $1,200 models, but I got fed up with paying top dollar for a product that didn't deserve it.
The graphics and video industry has this very erroneous notion that if you want to do anything serious in those fields you need a Mac. At one point many years ago that was true, but it hasn't been for several years now. Apple is making the bulk of their money with the iPhones, iPads and iEverything else but Mac towers, so that line has been almost abandoned completely. The exterior is still a design from 2002, and the interior from 2010. The "renewed" 2012 models are a joke, a tiny speed bump and you have to pay $5,000 if you want one that is barely decent. Even worse, even though in recent years Adobe Premiere and many plugins started making extensive use of CUDA technology, Mac Pros still come with only choices of outdated Radeon cards, which are only good for games and maybe some stuff in After Effects but that's it. If you want any sort of an Nvidia card in a Mac, you have to spend thousands on one of the few Quadros that are compatible with Macs, all of them outdated cards, unless you download a hacked driver to make any Nvidia card work, but I wouldn't trust my editing workstation to a hacked driver.
On the PC side, you have several more choices. You can put together a system that will be equal or faster or to any MacPro. To give you an idea, my current system, which has an Intel i7 3930k CPU (six cores at 3.2 GHz but that go up to 4 Ghz each with Turbo), 32 GB of Corsair RAM, and an Nvidia GTX570 graphics card, gives me a Cinebench R11.5 score of 52.91 fps for Open GL and 11.28 pts for CPU render. I was just reading a forum in which a guy that ran the same version of Cinebench on his MacPro with the dual 2.40 Ghz 6 core CPUs(that's 12 physical cores) and what I assume is the stock Radeon graphics card gets 30.75 fps OpenGL and 12.5 CPU. The MacPro may be marginally faster for CPU render than my machine, but much slower for GPU, which is almost as important these days. And checking the current prices at the Apple store, he paid at least $3,800 for that computer, while I paid less than $2,000 for mine.
Five years ago I started assembling my computers, and they have been the fastest and most reliable computers I've ever had. Better than any Mac or brand PC I've ever had, and with the advantage that every two or three years I can upgrade it and still use some components, instead of having to buy a whole new computer like you would do with a Mac.
The only downside to self assembled PCs currently is that as long as Microsoft keeps selling Windows 7 Pro, you're fine, but if they stop and you have to install that abomination of technology that is Windows 8, then the choice is not so clear. But, Windows XP was released in 2001 and millions of computers around the world still use it just fine, so I don't see MS ending sales of Windows 7 anytime soon, because Windows 8 is a toy for tablets, but as a professional desktop OS is a joke, and I'm sure that the hundreds of articles and angry forum posts online about it must have reached them. But at least for now, the choice is very clear, stay away from Apple and go with self assembled PCs, and if you don't know how to assemble one, there are small businesses that do it for you. Believe me, anybody who has the intelligence to edit video can assemble a PC, it's no more complicated than it was to assemble a Lego kit when you were 7.

  • Extremely loud and damaging audio peaks while scrubbing through busy sequences (health hazard)

    Hi,
I am editing in Premiere Pro CC (2013) and I have repeatedly experienced the problem while scrubbing through a busy sequence where a very short audio sample (milliseconds) will blast through my speakers damaging my speakers and my ears. It normally occurs while I am quickly navigating between parts of my sequence that have multiple audio layers which leads me to believe it is an audio rendering issue. The audio sample that plays is extremely loud (many times louder than the media in the sequence) and causes me pain, being a full time editor this is extremely damaging to my hearing. I need to have audio scrubbing enabled whilst editing and I am hoping for a workaround to stop this problem whilst keeping audio scrubbing enabled.
    My system:
Audio playback set to built in output (I use headphones)
    2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB (Cuda enabled)
    OS X 10.9.4

7.2.2 is the last release of CC7. And as I already noted it contains the fix I was referring to, which apparently doesn't resolve the issue you're encountering. If you started this project in an earlier release of CC7, it's possible that it is the same bug and, though fixed in your current build, it's continuing to present itself because it's basically saved to the audio preview files. In that case, clearing the audio preview files would get you free and clear of the bug.
Note, by the way, that 7.2.2 is not the current version. CC2014 was released in June of this year, followed by 2014.0.1 in July.

  • No audio when scrubbing through?

Okay, so I'm new to imovie. I started yesterday and I already know all the basics. A few hours ago, I was able to scrub through the timeline as well as clips and, without pressing spacebar/play, I could hear the audio being scrubbed along with the video. Now, I can't hear the audio at all, in either place, unless I press spacebar/play button.
I didn't mess around with much, so I don't know what could be causing this. I've got 8 GB of RAM so there shouldn't be a speed/dropped audio or frames problem.
I may just need to press one button, but I don't want to mess things up more. Anyways, it's driving me crazy, so any help is appreciated, preferably ASAHP! I'm working on a killer music video so I need my audio scrubs! ^_^

At the far right of the light grey menu bar (which runs horizontally through the centre of the screen) you will see an icon/button directly to the left of the green audio bars. This button allows you to turn audio scrubbing on and off. It's a small box showing wave forms. If it is turned off you will see a vertical red line within the box. Click the button to turn on audio scrubbing.
Correction: The red line appears when the scrubbing is on or off. The wave forms turn to a darker colour when turned on.

  • No audio when scrubbing through clips

Out of the blue, i find i'm no longer about to hear the audio when scrubbing through clips either using the cursor or the left-right arrow keys. I can hear the audio find when playing the clip at normal speed, but when i scrub through the clip or play it one frame at a time using the left or right arrow keys I get know audio. This problem occurs on all sequences, even for old projects that have been edited previously where i was able to scrub through the clips. I've looked at all my user preferences and project preferences and i don't see any setting that would seem to affect the audio scrubbing. any help that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Didn't see that option. Much appreciated.
    But it is there:-)
