SCSI card for G5 tower?

Does anyone know of a good, compatible, SCSI/PCI card for a G5 tower?
We have some old scanners, tape drives, etc. that are al SCSI. They were connected to an old beige G3 that finally died. Now I can't access some of my back-up tapes, nor scan.
I know Adaptec makes one, but none of the specs list OSX (or any Mac OS) as an operating system.
I need a solution, and really know nothing about PCI cards. Any thoughts?

Working at a Quad right now, which is soon to be replaced. It's served me well for 4 or 5 years now, but CS5 is forcing me to go to a MacPro. Would have never gotten this much life/productivity out of a PC though.

Reliable SCSI card for G4 tower (Quicksilver or other G4 tower) with OS 9 ?

Good morning.
I am trying to setup a G4 Quicksilver (or another slower G4 tower) under OS 9 to be able to use a very nice Epson wide format scanner (no OS X drivers available). It has only a SCSI Centronics 50 pin connector.
1. Is there a reliable and available (with OS 9 drivers) SCSI PCI card that will work in a variety of G4 towers under OS 9?
2. If the card doesn't have the 50 pin Centronics connector, how do I adapt the scanner to the card input?

When SCSI was built in to Macs, it was what we now call "narrow" SCSI. Apple used the DB-25, a 25-pin connector that looked like an RS-232 connector (because it was the same connector). To use it with typical 50-pin Centronics devices, a cable called a Macintosh System Cable was used. The Macintosh System cable swapped the signals around and connected the few grounds in the 25-pin connector to the many grounds in the 50-pin connector. Almost all devices came with two Centronics-50 connectors. Connecting multiple devices together was accomplished with a Centronics-50-to-Centronics-50 cable, and the last connector on the last device was filed with a Terminator.
Most of the add-on cards available later were "fast", "wide", "fast and wide" SCSI, optimized and tuned up to run faster than the built-in's maximum 5 Mega Bytes/sec. They used more complex cables and had more rules for proper operation. Your scanner alone cannot generate data fast enough to fill up the original "narrow" SCSI. So you need none of the later stuff.
Faced with no SCSI port on the new Blue & White G3 (the first Mac without a SCSI port since the original Macs), many users at that time installed the Adaptec 2930 card in a PCI slot to run their scanners or occasional other SCSI devices. The card is capable of Fast-20 speeds if your device supports it, and works with G3s and G4s with PCI slots. The card has an external 50-pin connector called HP-DB50, which has nothing to do with Hewlett Packard, it means Half-Pitch (the pins are twice as close together as on the DB-25 connector). HP-DB50-to-Centronics-50 cables are readily available. Support for the Adaptec 2930 is still available built into Mac OS X.
If you go with the Adaptec 2930 card, it will run your scanner, not require any adapters -- just one cable converts to the connector you need, and if you can get an "active" 50-pin Centronics terminator with an LED, your life should be easy.
There are tons more solutions available. Each comes with a little more added complexity and more potential features if you want to do additional things with it.

SCSI card for a G5 or processor upgrade for a G4?

Actually, this is a question that concerns the G5 and the G4 forum, but I decided to post it here first.
So, I have this old G4/400 PCI with an Adaptec 2930 SCSI card that I use for scanning slides with an Artix 4000t sclide scanner; this works fine, but the G4 is rather slow when it comes to using some features of the scanning software, such as removing scratches.
I've been thinking about buying a SCSI card for my G5 (Dual 1.8) for some time now, but I'm not sure what card I should go for; I'm not even sure if there are still cards for such an "old" device as the slide scanner (about 3 to 4 years old, no Ultrawide or something like that). And then there's the problem of the drivers for the card - how long will they be available, especially now that Apple is switching to Intel...?
The other possibility would be to buy a processor upgrade for the G4. I've seen some at OWC, and they seem to be less expensive than a SCSI card. The drawback of this solution is of course that I'll have to keep the G4 standing on my desk... on the other hand, I do know that the scanner will work perfectly with the G4.
The G5, on the other hand... it will be faster and easier, since I won't have to transfer the files for storage and editing, I could free some space on my desk,... but will it work? The G5 is running 10.4, I'm not sure if my current scanner driver is compatible... and what when 10.5 comes out...?
So I'm looking for a second, third, fourth... opinion:
What would you do? Get a SCSI card for the G5 or a processor upgrade for the G4? What SCSI card would you recommend?

I've done some research on G5 and SCSI and scanners, and obviously, what I remembered was correct... making it work seems at least tricky, and maybe expensive too (if you've got to buy new scanning software and and..).
So I guess that's decided: No SCSI on the G5. Leaves the question, should I buy a processor upgrade card for the G4? Getting some dual G4 on eBay might be an option, but then, that would be another computer in my already crammed office, and I just can't throw the G4 away, it's one of the very first models...
I came by the idea of a processor upgrade because I just played around with an old Mac SE, which has an 68030 accelerator card installed, and this seems to work fine. Anyone has any experience with G3 /G4 upgrades (good or bad)?
Smokerz: Why would you not recommend an upgrade? Any bad experiences?

There is DVI-I, DVD-D, & DVI-A, DVI-I contains both DVI-A & DVI-D, HDMI uses DVD-D, (Digital), so it can connect to DVI-I or DVD-D.
Those 4 holes are only used for DVI-A, (analog).

Have you checked Adaptec's web site? They may have something that will run on the G5 (I haven't checked lately as I haven't had the need for SCSI for my G5).

Scsi card for mdd

i just inherited my wifes g4 mdd. she got the new g5 for christmas!!!
can i take out the scsi card from my now old g4 400 mhz and shove it in an open slot on the mdd and have it work? or is there more to it than that? reason is i still have an old umax scanner that works of scsi. does its job just fine, would hate it to become obsolte just because of an incompatible connection.

First, don't worry about usb 1 or 2. You are correct that your mac is usb 1 but it is capable of providing speeds faster than scsi 1 or scsi 2 and I'm betting that your scanner is scsi 1.
The scanner that cost $1500 is irrelevant. I still have some very old macs that cost $3,000 or $4,000 but are boat anchors in today's computing. They still serve to hook up some old peripherals or occasioinally get info off of some old scsi drives. By the way, this is another way to do what you are trying to do. Use an old scsi mac for the scanner and os 8 or 9 and network it to your mdd. It becomes a scanner server when needed. Old scsi macs can be had for less than $25 if you shop.
As for booting single user for fsck or using safe boot with the shift key they accomplish the same thing in running Disk Repair before loading X. When the kernel panics the directory is not properly written to at shut down. Errors can happen depending on what was going on. ANY TIME YOU DO A HARD SHUT DOWN (no matter what the reason) YOU NEED TO RESTART WITH THE SHIFT KEY DOWN OR IN SINGLE USER MODE AND RUN FSCK. This practice along with journaling will greatly reduce the likelyhood of a damage directory messing you up.

Best 68 Pin SCSI Card for Mac OS 9 on 933 mHz Quicksilver G4?

I'm looking for a SCSI card that will support 68 pin SCSI drives (15K Cheetahs) on a Mac G4 Quicksilver running Mac OS 9 ONLY (Not Classic. I only installed OS 9 from the retail disc and am NOT using Mac OS X). I have Adaptec 2940UW and Adaptec 2940U2W cards which work on my Blue and White G3 with SCSI drives. However those Adaptec cards do not work on the G4....at least you can't boot from a SCSI drive on them.
I would like a card that may also work in OS X in case I change the purpose of the machine later as I have those original install discs. I have read of some folks using the ATTO UL4D with success in OS X, but wanted to know if anyone knows if it will work in OS 9.2.1 only or Classic. I called ATTO Tech and they weren't sure, and some old web pages I have read only mention OS X. Hence, I'm unsure if it's compatible with OS9. I would appreciate any feedback from SCSI users. Also, if there are other cards that you think would work with my setup, please advise.

PCI scsi card for ScanMaker 4

Hi every one!
I have G4 running Mac OX 10.4, I'm able to scan from the ScanMaker 4 in Mac OS 9 into PhotoShop or using the scanning software, however if I try to scan in OS X there is not communication between the computer and the scanner.
I have installed a " PCI Adaptec SCSI" card ( which work fine in OS 9x), so far no luck in Microtek web site or Adaptec trying to down load a driver, a patch or something that allow me get my scanner to work in OS X.
Any help on this will greatly appreciated!

I have had the same problem with an Epson SCSI scanner. Either there is no driver or it does not work. The solution is shareware "VueScan" which worked presto. You can download a free trial version before buying.

SCSI Card for new MP 2.8?

I have a few old SCSI drives that contain some backed up photos and such. Are there any SCSI cards that work with the new MP?

I cannot comment on the FW/SCSI bridge as I never used this kind of solution.
If your drives do have centronics interface, it means they are SCSI-1 type drives.
You should know that this is not an issue at all... as SCSI type 3 adapter cards can be connected to those drives, provided you have the proper VHDCI/Centronics cable.
You should know also that those adapter cards are expensive !
The one I would recommend is the ATTO card: ExpressPCI UL5D

Looking for PCI SCSI card for G5

I've just learned my old SCSI PCI card (5 volt) from my G4 won't work in the G5 (3.3 volt PCI slot).
I'm looking for a 50-pin SCSI PCI card, 3.3v, that will work in a G5 & with OSX ... any suggestions? Thanks.

I'm interested to know if this is the plain old Adaptec 29160N or the Adaptec PowerDomain 29160N. I made a similar upgrade 4 years ago and I had an identical problem. I never got my old scanner to work. The ratoc SCSI--Firewire bridge didn't support multiprocessors, and the Adaptec PowerDomain card was prohibitively expensive. Due to the lack of updated drivers for the scanner, VueScan was necessary in either case, if remember properly.

Scsi card for older xserve?

We have a couple of G4 PowerMacs that we currently use for backup. However, to save space, we are considering finding a couple of older Xserves (of the G4 variety) to replace them, with the obvious advantage being rackability. I have been trying every turn of search phrases I can think of to determine what Ultra 160 Wide SCSI adapters would be compatible with such a machine, but alas I cannot seem to find it! Can anyone offer any suggestions? Many thanks in advance.

Just out of curiousity... Why bother? With 4 400GB drives, you can put 1.6TB of inexpensive ATA disk into each machine for just a couple hundred dollars. Last check, 1.2TB of SCSI disk is about $3,000.

Installing SCSI card

I've recently purchased an Adaptec 2906 SCSI card for use in a G4 running OS X 10.1. My knowledge of SCSI is not the greatest so I have a few problems I hope someone could help me with.
I have installed the card as per the Adaptec instructions, however I am unsure as to whether I need to use an internal scsi cable to connect the SCSI card to another part of the computer. The Adaptec instructions mention an internal 50 pin SCSI cable, but I am unsure of whether this is only used when connecting up internal SCSI devices (CD drives/Optical Drives etc). At the moment, the only other PCI slot used in the G4 is a card for a monitor.
When I enter Apple System Profiler it is aware that there is a card in the PCI slot, but it does not name it as Adaptec (at the moment it simply says "name: not available"). Also, when I connect a device to the SCSI card - ASP does recognise it is connected (I have attached both a Sony Optical Drive and Apple CD Drive). However, when I place some media in these drives they do not mount in OS X, and disk utility does not show either drive.
As I said, I haven't the greatest understanding of SCSI, so I may be making a stupid mistake somewhere along the line.
As a bit of background, I need to get some information off of a batch of Magneto Optical disks, and all the drives I have are SCSI, therefore I need to get this SCSI card up and running if possible

Sorry to hear the saga continues. I have just started rechecking the Adaptec help site, and the following is the response to a "not reported" (my search), or "device name not available" (Adaptec's phrasing):

A: The SCSI Host Adapter is not in a bus mastering PCI slot.
Move the SCSI Host Adapter to a different PCI slot.
The SCSI Host Adapter has an IRQ conflict with another device in the system. The resources for the PCI SCSI Host Adapter are assigned by the motherboards CMOS setup. Double check with your computer manufacturer or motherboard manual for setting up resources for PCI slots.
So, though I will continue the search, I need some more information from you.
What, precisely, is your model and cpu?
What other PCI devices do you have installed (if any)?
Also, in spite of the fact that the card is not reporting (though detected), as far as testing function goes, please attempt connection of one of your SCSI devices. Please read the following:

Be sure to properly terminate your device.
Connect only with system "off". (SCSI device power off as well).
After connected, turn "on" the SCSI device BEFORE powering up the computer.
After you get back with me regarding your Mac's vital stat's, I can then check for more system specific information.
One last note- In my G4 Sawtooth and G4 Gigabit Ethernet, the SCSI card is in slot "D"- the PCI slot closest to the internal hard drives.
