SCSI/Firewire combination RAC on RH AS 2.1

Hi,
Has anyone configure a clustered system on RH AS 2.1 using both SCSI and firewire as the shared access disks?
Reasoning: have one instance running on the scsi units, but lack of space for a second much larger (140GB) instance. Would like to add firewire for this.
Any help/assistence/views is appreciated.
Kind regards,
Ian Smith

Hello,
I just want to say Thanks!!
For your Installation 9i R2 on RH Tutorial.
And, I have to say they works fine to Mandrake too. (some times - better tham).
My best regards,

  • Problems with SCSI-Firewire adapter

Hi- I recently bought a 500 gig hard drive that was apparently not compatible with the ATA card I had in my G4 and it caused both my start-up hard drive and my back-up internal hard drive to crash beyond recovery. I've bought a G5 but now realize that my VERY expensive SCSI drum scanner needs to work on my G4. I had the SCSI cable of the scanner run into a Belkin Firewire to SCSI (part F5U541) and then the firewire ran into my G4. Worked perfectly. I've installed a new hard drive on the G4 and all of the software that I had on it but now (running OS 10.3.9 like before the crash), for some reason, the computer doesn't recognize the scanner. (The driver for the Belkin adapter is only OS 9 and didn't seem to make a difference before.) At the moment the only software I have installed is the scanner software and the OS.
Here's the strange part- when I go into System Profile the computer recognizes that a device is going into the Firewire port. When I start up the scanner software (Color Quartet 5.2.1) it says that the computer does not recognize any devices. This is the strangest part- last week the computer recognized the scanner for about an hour and then stopped.
Does anyone know of drivers or files on the OS X.3.9 that could be causing this problem or what might the problem even be?
I really need to get this scanner back up and working. Any help would be appreciated.
    Best,
    Joe

Thanks for the input but using the digital camera
isn't really an option. This is an 11,000 dpi drum
scanner with an amazing dynamic range.
wow....If its a ScanView 11000, then it needs SCSI-II, which the 2906 card is not.
Also, Viewscan is not an option because this scanner
And Viewscan doesnt support drum scanners....
Like I said before, I had the scanner working at
10.3.9 at one time. Now that I have a new hard drive
and have installed 10.3.9 the scanner won't
work...does anyone know of what might be the problem?
Does your Belkin adapter require a driver of any sort?
I just did some poking around on colorquartet software.
(at least one version) requires a hardware dongle. Does yours?

  • Combining RACs

I'm working in an environment that has two databases, each running on their own two node RAC. One database has high utilization, the other is very low. I would like to to combine the two RACs into a single, four node RAC to better use the hardware resources available.
The approach I am considering is removing one of the nodes from the low utilization RAC, and adding it to the high utilization RAC. Then, I would move the database to the three node RAC. Once that is done, I would add the single node to the the the three node RAC, bringing it up as the fourth node.
Does anyone have any experience combining two separate RACs into a single RAC? What process did you use?

Yes, that's what I meant by "removing one of the nodes from the low utilization RAC, and adding it to the high utilization RAC". I was speaking in pretty general terms, really just presenting an outline of what I was thinking.
I do need to completely remove a node from the low usage RAC, before it can be added to the high utilization RAC. When I have one node left in the low utilization RAC, and the database moved off, I will need to remove the clusterware from the server before making it the fourth node in the "new" RAC.

  • Looking for PCI SCSI card for G5

I've just learned my old SCSI PCI card (5 volt) from my G4 won't work in the G5 (3.3 volt PCI slot).
I'm looking for a 50-pin SCSI PCI card, 3.3v, that will work in a G5 & with OSX ... any suggestions? Thanks.

I'm interested to know if this is the plain old Adaptec 29160N or the Adaptec PowerDomain 29160N. I made a similar upgrade 4 years ago and I had an identical problem. I never got my old scanner to work. The ratoc SCSI--Firewire bridge didn't support multiprocessors, and the Adaptec PowerDomain card was prohibitively expensive. Due to the lack of updated drivers for the scanner, VueScan was necessary in either case, if remember properly.

  • Epson Stylus Photo R1800: successful Firewire install on Intel iMac?

Has anyone been able to succesfully install the Epson Stylus Photo R1800 on an Intel iMac using the Firewire connection?
After installing the Intel drivers from the Epson website, if I connect the printer via the USB cable the printer and associated driver show up in the Printer Setup Utility just fine. But if I connect the printer via the Firewire cable I just see a printer named "E" in the printer setup utility and no R1800 driver at all.
Epson support just keeps instructing me to uninstall and reinstall the driver.
I've hunted around in the discussions here and have noticed some people having trouble with this particular printer, but I've been unable to establish whether anyone has been succesful with the Intel iMac/Firewire combination.
iMac 20" Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I am printing with a firewire connection. I have an intel iMac. Prior to buying the R1800, I checked out Epson's site for new intel printer drivers. A new update has been posted with an alert about the bundled software that comes with the R1800-don't install it! And if it was installed there's an uninstall walk through. The software did not come anywhere near my new imac. I downloaded the new software and I am printing with a firewire connection. I have one issue with the download. I can't print CDs because the application is on the original software cd. I contacted Epson and asked if I could install just the CD print software and not the printer driver. I will be waiting for an answer. I installed the software on a powerPC imac tiger. The printer is firewire connected and there are no printing problems, I can even print CD labels.
    I will post epson's response.

  • Tiger and SCSI ?

    Hello
I try to connect my imacon scanner (SCSI) on my G4 MP500, but I have a message : "Scanner not find"
    I connect it on a Adaptec 2930,
I try with OS9 and same problem
I install the software Adaptec for OSX
    If you have a idea?
    Thanks to all the people
    G4MP500   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I forgot to mention that I drive all my scanners with VueScan. As long as they're on the list, they'll run on OS X. I actually do have a scanner that is not supported by the manufacturer under OS X (the SCSI support was never ported), but the SCSI>FireWire adapter and VueScan run that scanner perfectly in Tiger.

  • Puzzle: Old SCSI jaz drive

I have some old jaz discs which I have not been able to access since my old Power Computing tower died. I bought a jaz drive (SCSI) on ebay, as well as a SCSI/usb adapter cord to try it out on my iMac Intel Core 2 Duo. I fired it up and popped in the disc; the drive beeps and obviously works but doesn't mount. I looked at the iomega site and the drivers they have don't seem to be applicable.
I see some old posts about this, but nothing seems helpful or conclusive. Is there any way anyone can think of for me to get my data off these drives w/out spending a lot more money?
    Thanks!
    Cap'n P.

The only info I have is that I've read about problems using SCSI-USB adapters, but I have never had a problem with my SCSI-FireWire adapter on various old SCSI peripherals. I use this one. I've managed to read old Bernoulli and SyQuest disks, but haven't tried Jaz.

  • Problem with Oracle RAC with DRCP and persistent connections

    Hello,
I am having a problem that has me stumped. I cannot get SCAN, and DRCP to work together nicely.
Right now, I can connect through my scan hostname fine without connection pooling, once I enable it I start having connection time outs. I found if I specified outbound_connection_timeout in sqlnet.ora that it times the connection out to the time I set in there. If I don't set this option I get a "ORA-12170: TNS:Connect timeout occurred".
The odd thing is I can leave connection pooling on and connect to one of my rac instances individually and it doesn't experience this problem. The only time it pops up is if I combine multiple rac instances (Through the use of SCAN or tnsnames.ora) and I enable connection pooling.
I don't know which direction to go to even diagnose this, so any and all help is appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • Help for someone not very sure of what they're doing.

    Hey,
We're a small film production company based in Shanghai and we're about to start production on the biggest project we've ever done and in preparation for the project we want to streamline our workflow into a much more manageable system, but none of us have any real experience with decent server set ups.
I have in my time worked with just a dedicated machine as a small server for shared documents etc, but as we work with HDV footage we're going to need something substantially better in order to handle a lot of processor intense stuff.
My question is, what do we need to get to set this up? Right now the office has a couple of imacs, a couple of power mac G5s and a bunch of macbook/macbook pros. We need something whereby HD footage can be edited by multiple machines but all kept in a central location that is also able to be accessed remotely (although we don't need HDV to be supported for this). I've been looking into Final Cut and OSX server to run the workflow end of things, but I'm not sure what we need in terms of hardware.
Anyone got any suggestions for where I start? Obviously I don't know if I've given enough info for you to reply, but if you get back to me with questions I can try and give you some more info.
    Thanks

Storage is available as Direct Attached Storage (DAS), as Network Attached Storage (NAS), and Storage Area Network (SAN) storage.
DAS is direct, fast, and local and typically single-host; the disks are attached to host-based controllers.
NAS is the slower and distributed and multi-host option; the disks are attached to a Gigabit LAN.
SAN is the faster and distributed and multi-host option; the disks are attached to a Fibre Channel network.
NAS trades off lower costs for higher bit-error rates; the controllers and particularly the host have to deal with the communications errors that arise. This adds some overhead, and reduces the speeds.
SAN has higher costs and lower bit-error rates; the controllers and the host can go faster, as there are fewer communications errors expected. This is lower overhead, and helps maintain speed.
As for the physical connectivity, NAS uses Gigabit Ethernet. SAN uses Fibre Channel.
DAS can use SAS, SATA, SCSI, FireWire, or otherwise. (The embedded disks within an Xserve are SAS/SATA connections.) There are trade-offs here, too. And there are some vendors that sell DAS gear that can (if you add more bits from the vendor) be re-configured and re-used on a SAN, should you move from DAS to SAN.
Mac OS X Server is a basic piece of the puzzle; with any moderate- to large-scale Mac OS X configuration, you'll have some number of Mac OS X Server boxes. Mac OS X Server with Xsan allows the server to access SAN-based storage, particularly with multiple servers accessing the same pool of storage. Xsan is a way to coordinate and extend Mac OS X Server to operate in parallel with other Mac OS X Server boxes.
Add-on software is either not needed for DAS, or it's a driver or kext for the particular host-based storage controller.
Add-on software may be needed for NAS, or the NAS controller presents an AFS server.
For highest speed, the usual choice is DAS or SAN, and the decider there is the likelihood you'll need to access the storage from multiple servers at speed. DAS is typically single-host, where SAN is multi-host.
I'd suggest some more formal pre-sales or technical help here. You're headed for a whole lot of decisions, and the NAS and DAS and SAN differences are just one of many, many, many decisions and trade-offs that are involved with acquiring and configuring and running a server. Any sort of a server.

  • Finder freezes when trying to move files to external hard drive

Whenever I try to move files from internal hard drive to my external finder freezes it. I have over 5 TBs of free space on my external, so I know it's not a space issue. This happens no matter the size of the file. It starts the copy and then will freeze before it finishes. If I try to force quit and select relaunch it acts like it is relaunching but my icons never re-appear and the command bar at the top never returns. So I end up having to hard boot.
I just reinstalled the 10.5.8 combo update and verified both hard disks, if any repairs came up I repaired and then did the same with disk permissions....it's still freezing on me. I am frustrated because there are some files I'd really like to move to my external raid hard drive but I'm not able to.
The freezing happens if I'm trying to transfer files from a disc or an additional external HD. My internal HD is only so big and the external Raid drive is for my capture scratch on Final Cut Pro and I'm even having issues capturing to that drive. Everything wants to be on my internal HD and that doesn't work for me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Sean Dale1 wrote:
Do you get any error messages and if so what are they? Do you have any problems copying files off the problem drive back to your Mac or do the freezes only occur when copying to the external?
No I don't get any error messages, the finder just freezes and when I try to relaunch finder it doesn't relaunch properly..all icons are missing and I'm not able to access the the task bar to properly shut down so I have to hard boot.
It happens only when trying to save files to the external, whether through drag and drop or within programs. I am able to access files on the external and copy files from there to my internal without problems.
Have you tried attaching this drive to another Mac and if so do you get the same issues?
I don't have another Mac to attach the drive to.
How is this RAID attached, SCSI, FireWire, SATA or what? How was the RAID created, Disk Utility or third party software and have you verified the integrity of the RAID?
The RAID is attached via SCSI. In an attempt to solve this finder issue I re-installed the drivers to the most current drivers available and in doing so updated any firmware....and there was no change. I was not the one who set up the RAID so I don't know how it was created. It's an Enhance UltraStore R16 and I've been using it without issues since January 2007 and this freezing thing has been intermittent for a few months now but now it's constant and annoying. I've verified the disk through disk utility but I don't have any software to check the integrity otherwise. Do you have any recommendations as to what software I could use to do this?

  • Mac OS 10.4.10 and Tape Devices issues

    Subject: [BRUServer-Announce] Mac OS X 10.4.10 Announcement...
I am posting this message out to the group for additional knowledge on
    this issue..
We have a older G5 XServe with XRaid connected via Fibre Channel and an Adic

We have been seeing some issue with our tape unit lately and looking for
suggestions on a fix or work-a-round.

To resolve this issue, we strongly suggest that you downgrade to

My question would be if we select to downgrade to Mac OS 10.4.8,
What would be the Best method to do downgrade to Mac OS 10.4.8 ?

Please do not reply to this message.
This list is for announcements only.
An Important Note for Mac Users of BRU Technology Under Mac OS X
Since the release of 10.4.10, there are a number of issues that have
surfaced with writing to tape and disk devices. For this reason,
10.4.10 is not compatible with tape devices connected to Mac OS X
10.4.10 via SCSI, FireWire, USB, SAS, or Fibre-Channel.
This is not a BRU Server software problem, but rather an Apple Mac OS
X problem when using any type of software that communicates with tape
    devices.
Other problems with XRAID, Xsan, and other disk devices communicating
over these channels may also be realized.

We apologize that we did not make the announcement sooner, however, we
believed that 10.4.11, which fixes this problem, would be released
much sooner than now. As of this announcement, 10.4.11 has yet to be
released, nor has there been an announcement for its expected release
    date.

an update on my client's situation:
    os: server 10.4.11
scsi card: LSILogic Ultra320, 1.3.39.0 firmware
tape: exabyte 1x10 library, vxa172 tape drive
after a reboot, but still running 10.4.10, the tape drive appeared on the SCSI bus.
after installing the 10.4.11 update, the OS can't see the tape drive, but the library is. basically, that's no different than before the update.
does anyone have any ideas on how to scare the drive into reappearing? would unloading/reloading kexts help? the library is basically useless without the tape drive reliably recognized by the SCSI card.

  • Rendering and Final Cut Pro 5.1.2

I am editing in HD 1080i 29.97 and when I media manage and re-import the footage I need to render. I am having problems doing a long render. I used to be able to render the entire project and all worked. Now I have to render it in chunks. Sometimes I get an out of memory error also. I also have a problem of FCP crashing durring the render. I am using Borris effects on some stuff but not that much. I am also using miniDV footage in the project. Does anyone have any Idea what is going on. Or am I just a bad user?
    Chris

I might be able to offer some help...or not. I'm envious about the HD...but my turn is coming.
My suggestions fall into the obvious ones. You might check your scratch disk settings and/or virtual memory. You may find that you are using your 20 GB hard drive for rendering, but (like on my MacBook when I have to use it) less than 1GB remains available. I have to do major housekeeping after each project. I basically archive all source material, capture scratch files, and render files to either my 1TB array or burn several DVDs, depending on various factors. I suspect you have a similar storage space problem.
What type of connection (SCSI, Firewire, etc.) are you using for the external storage? Can you access it as primary scratch disk or for virtual memory? If not, can you move files/apps to it and run from them? That might create the space it appears you need to complete the long render.
Best of luck to yuo with your project...Happy New Year!

I have this set up with 2 internals with osX .9 on one for final cut & osX .6 for media 100i on the other( can't upgrade the os because of the version of Media 100). I have audio editing software for win2k or XP that isn't available for mac. I have a terrabyte of external for media (scsi & firewire)-can I partition one of these to boot to win2k?

"can I partition one of these to boot to win2k?"
No. Not with a PowerPC based Mac such as the Quicksilver you list in your profile. And not with an Intel based Mac, as the only version of Windows they will boot is XP and Vista

  • Installing extra IDE drives

My 500mhz. dual processor G4(revision B) came with 2 40 gig IDE hard drives installed. They're piggy-back installed in the botton right side of the bottom of the G4 case with a 2-input ribbon cable that connects to the motherboard right next to it. In the future though I'd like to install another drive or two next to the others but how is this done? I see space for another caddy next to the present one but what about the ribbon and power cables? How many drives can be used and what cables are needed to make them work?

    Hi
Mac compatible ATA and SATA PCI cards are available from a number of manufacturers including ACARD, FirmTek, Sonnet and SIIG. I guess the main decision is whether you choose an older style ATA card or a newer SATA (Serial ATA) card.
    ATA cards include the following:
    http://www.acard.com.tw/english/fb01-product.jsp?idnono=124&prod_no=AEC-6280M&type1_title=Adapters&type1idno=3
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/tempo_ata133.html
    SATA cards include the following:
    http://www.acard.com.tw/english/fb01-product.jsp?idnono=126&prod_no=AEC-6290M&type1_title=Adapters&type1idno=3
    http://www.firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-1s2/
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/temposerialata.html
OWC seem to stock a wide variety of those available. The following links should give an idea of the costs involved:
    ATA
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/ATA-SCSI-Firewire-Controllers/
    SATA
    http://eshop.macsales.com/Search/Search.cfm?Criteria=SATAHigh-Speed+Controller+MacCards&x=0&y=0&Manufacturer=
Things to look for include whether the attached drives are bootable, whether the card supports deep sleep and whether it's plug and play or requires third party drivers.
Your 4 gig drive should work on an ATA card but not directly on a SATA card. You can buy adapters to attach ATA drives to SATA cards and vice-versa, although I'm not sure whether it would be worth it for a relatively small drive.
Edit - You'll also need to check OS compatibility, especially if you're using OS 9 or an early version of OS X.
