Scsi Scanner on a Beige G3 running osx 10.3.9

I have a Umax 1220s scsi scanner attached to my beige G3 onto which I have loaded 10.3.9 - if I restart in os9.2 the scanner is recognised - however os 10.3.9 System profiler says 'no information' for the scsi. Is this a surmountable problem as the scanner is still pretty good and I don't really want to keep swapping OSs just to scan things.

Probably not. I used to have a LinoType Circon SCSI scanner that did the same thing. Worked fine booted to OS 9 (on the G4 I had at the time), but was invisible to OS 9 as Classic within OS X. This is mostly due to OS 9 running in a shell. Only one OS can have direct access to the hardware at a time. So while in OS X, all calls to hardware have to pass through OS X. This is fine for a lot of items such as printers, but scanning software for SCSI devices tend to want to talk directly to the SCSI controller/scanner. They can't do that through the software layer of OS X which is controlling communication with the SCSI card. Hence, the software can't find the scanner.
In addition to VueScan, you may also want to give SilverFast a look for OS X native scanning software that will work with your scanner.

  • How to Run a SCSI Scanner with Firewire In OS X?

Does anyone know how to run a SCSI scanner with Firewire in Mavericks?
I have unsuccessfully tried the RATOC FR1SX SCSI-to-Firewire converter. The Ratoc is recognized as a Firewire device in the System Profiler (see pic below). However, the VueScan scanning software does not recognize the scanner.  I know the scanner works because I have been using it in an old HP PC. As such I  installled Windows 7 64 bit via Boot Camp to see if I could use the scanner, but had no luck.
    I have an iMac 21.5-inch, Mid 2010.
    ANY HELP?

The Mac scanner driver is not seeing it as a native SCSI device assuming VueScan supports the model of scanner you have. (You did not list the scanner model.)
Other than getting a modern non-SCSI scanner, a possible option would be to get a Thunderbolt PCI expansion chassis and a 'real' SCSI interface card. There is no guarantee this will work though as SCSI has been discontinued in the Mac world for years and years. If you then want to look at a SCSI card for use with the expansion chassis then look at the following.
Hmm, just looked the AttoTech SCSI cards have been discontinued as well, as I said SCSI is ancient history in the Mac world.

  • SCSI CD Burner on Beige G3 with OS 8.6

I've been using a LaCie 4x CD burner with my beige G3 Power PC. It died a few weeks ago and I found some SCSI LaCie 4x4x16 drives on eBay. But they don't really work right. Only 1 or 2 sessions of multi-session disks mount, and the computer does not see a CD burner at all when I try to burn.
A quick search for drivers was not fruitful (I have not put a lot of effort into it yet). If I can't find a driver, what can I do? Can I upgrade the OS on this Mac?

I can't expertly address the first part of your question. My first suspicion would be of the drives. They are pretty old and in the optical drive world 4 years is about time for a drive to start showing its age. On the other hand they are third party drives so who knows what support they need. Since you had a LaCie burner before I would imagine the drivers would be similar and still on your computer. Exactly what model drives are they? Maybe somebody here can point you in the direction of drivers or may have some.
How much RAM does your beige have? 8.6 was the top of the OS8 line, but you could do OS9 or even OSX depending upon the computer configuration, especially RAM. Going to OS9 would not be unreasonable on a beige but it would require purchasing a set of (used) full retail installer discs. To comfortably run OSX on a beige requires pretty substantial hardware upgrades.

  • Can I run OSX 10.1.x on my OSX 10.8.2 iMac?

    Greetings,
I have a 4 year old iMac running OSX 10.8.2.  I recently purchased a Nikon film scanner (discontinued 3 - 4 years ago) that has bundled software compatible with OSX 10.1.x and Windows XP.  I know that it is possible to load WIndows XP on my mac if I use Parallels or possibly a virtual machine software package.  But is it also possible to run OSX 10.1.x on my 10.8.2 mac?  If so, how would I do it?  Does Apple still sell OSX 10.1.x?  I'd prefer to avoid installing WIndows on my mac if I can avoid doing so.  If you know I can't do this, please tell me and I'll get on with the Microsoft solution.
    Thanks,
    BCB

To the best of my knowledge, Nikon has no drivers for their film scanners compatible with any recent version of Mac OS X, much less OS X 10.8, and never will now.. You have a couple of possible options:
    VueScan from Hamrick Software:  http://www.hamrick.com
    SilverFast from LaserSoft:  http://www.silverfast.com/show/scanners-nikon/en.html
Neither are free and SilverFast is not cheap, but it's probably the most professional. Both will support Mountain Lion.
    Regards.

  • CM1415FNW will not scan from feeder tray on one of 4 Imac computers all running OSX 10.10.2

This printer has been great never causing any difficulty until now.  After the latest OSX update to 10.10.2 on my newest IMAC (July 2014) the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) has failed when trying to scan to one of my IMAC computers.  The printer shows "Document loaded", the scanning software (HP Utility) on the IMAC shows "No Document Loaded".  When you switch to flatbed as document source the scanning software works perfectly.
Originally I assumed the printer was at fault and proceded to clean rollers, check aper and network connections.  All Appeared operational, so rebooted, to have same problem.  Deleted existing printer from printer preference and downlloaded and installed latest HP softeware & driver set.  Problem not resolved.
Tried to scan from ADF on oldest IMAC (August 2007) also running OSX 10.10.2 and it worked perfectly once I inastalled the printer/scanner software.
Both computers and the scanner are connected via a 10/100/1000 ethernet switch and everything checks out and there have been bo relocations or changes to the physical harware of the network
    This question was solved.

Your solution put me on the right track, the "reset" was  not available in the +/- menu, however I uninstalled all printers, then uninstalled all printer software and reinstalled via the Apple software update and that seems to have cleaared jp the problem.  Once again thanks for the assistance.

  • SCSI Scanner on PowerMac G5 with Leopard

    Hi all,
I have an old high-end SCSI scanner (AgfaScan XY-15) that I would like to use with my PowerMac G5 and OSX 10.5.8. In the past, I used a G4 MDD that could dual-boot OS 9 and OS X 10.3. The G4 had an Adapted card (29160 IIRC), the G5 an Atto (UL5D).
To have the scanner work with OS X 10.3, I had to replace IOSCSIArchitectureModelFamily.kext and IOSCSIParallelFamily.kext (in /System/Library/Extensions) by their OS X 10.2 versions (something Agfa recommended for their mid-range scanner, on a page that can now only be found in archives : http://web.archive.org/web/20050306100359/http://www.agfa.com/digicam_scanner_dr ivers/faq/#faq22a)
On Leopard, I can see the scanner in the ATTO configuration tool, but the scanner sofware always outputs a "scanner not found" error. This scanner cannot be used with VueScan, so the solution suggested on Using SCSI Scanner with 10.5 possible? is not applicable.
I have tried changing parameters (for instance disabling LUNs for ID 4 - the scanner - as shown below, which results in the scanner only appearing once in the list of devices), but I cannot seem to find the good combination of parameters.
Does someone with experience in SCSI scanners have some tips?
Thanks in advance for the help!

The last device on the chain must have termination turned on.      If it is, then I don't know what to say other than to try some of the other scanner drivers on my subscription site*:

  • I have a late 2012 iMac running osx 10.8.5.  I keep losing access to my internal hard drive.  I can reboot and regain access and it will last for a few minutes or hours.  Disk utility does not seems to help.

I have a late 2012 iMac with an I5 precessor running OSX 10.8.5 and a 1tb internal hard drive.  I keep losing access to the internal hard drive/startup disk.
I can reboot and everything operates as normal for a few minutes or hours but then I lose all access again to anything on the hard drive.  The computer is still up and running but no files can be accessed and certain websites cannot be acessed even though internet access appears to be normal.  Disk utility can only find permission errors related to iTunes which can be repaired only to come back at the next scan (I would not think permission errors would have anything to do with the hard drive crashing).  It does not seem to matter what program I am using at the time access is lost and it can lose access sometimes right after reboot when no program is running.

You will need to boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during restart and select it) to run Disk Utility/Disk Repair.

  • My mid 2010 Macbook pro running OSX 10.8.4 sd card reader will not work

I have a Macbook Pro 13" mid 2010 model running OSX 10.8.4.  I don't use the card reader very often so I can't tell you the last time it worked, but I have used it a few times without issue.  (probably not for at least a year though)
I searched the forums and it seems this was an older problem with lots of suggested fixes.  I tried blowing air through the slot and I also went looking for XQuartz but cannot find it under my utilities.  (I assume it must be in the X11 category that is no longer supported under 10.8.4?)
I have tried putting it in all the way and pulling it out slightly as one person suggested and that also did not work.
Any ideas?  For the first time in a long time I need the card slot and it doesn't feel like cooperating.  LOL
edited to add that I am trying to access a Sony SDHC 32GB card model SF-32NX
    Thanks in advance,
    Wayne

If you haven't already done so, eject the card by dragging its icon to the Eject icon in the Dock (where the Trash icon usually is.) Make sure the write-lock switch on the card is in the unlocked position. Then reinsert the card and test.
If there's no change, and the same happens with more than one card, the card reader is stuck in write-locked mode. I don't generally advise do-it-yourself hardware repair, but one ASC member managed to fix this problem. I haven't tried the fix myself and I can't offer any guidance beyond what's in that discussion. If you cause damage, don't expect your warranty to cover it. I suggest you instead make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • Why does my macbook run so slow?? I am running OSX 10.8.4

    I am running OSX 10.8.4
My Macbook pro is running extremely slow.
It takes a while to power down.
web pages do not pop up automatically like in the beginning.
What can i do to get my laptop back to fresh out the box performance???
This is getting irritating, since i need this laptop for school.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

I have an IMAC and I'm running OSX 10.9.2.  I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.  In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.  Is this possible? Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?

I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.
That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy.

  • When using a Foscam FI8910W IP Camera, how do I get the 2-way audio function to work? I have VLC as a video app in my applications folder. I am running OSX 10.8

Again, I am on a 2011 MBP, running OSX 10.8.4, and I use VLC as my default player. I bought a Foscam FI8910W Pan&Tilt camera, which has 2-way audio capability through the browser. I have looked online and the only people who have this camera who can also use their audio functions are those individuals who are on a PC running IE. The Foscam website says to fix this issue I must download VLC player. I had VLC before I ever heard of Foscam. Still no audio. When I sign onto my IP camera by inputting the IP address, the user name, and the encryption password, I can then view the camera. At the bottom, it has a URL that says (audio). Clicking this does only one thing - it tells me that I need a plug in to have audio support. The plugin is the VLC player. So I am back at square one. Please help.

I just went to the IP address to access my camera's software; however, there is no mention of audio settings or anything called ADPCM. The included software (CD) does not work with 10.8 - a fact left out by the manufacturer
